- WHAT YOU NEED TO DO FOR BOAT TRAILER MAINTENANCE!!! PART 2
Maintenance of a boat trailer is important for a trouble free day on the road. This is part 2 of a two part series on trailer maintenance. Many other issues can be overlooked regarding trailer maintenance like fasteners, lights, wiring and tires. Some trailers have no zerk fittings to grease the axle bearings and you need to pull the bearings to grease them. Others have grease fittings but no instructions on how often to grease them. Another alternative is to install Bearing Buddies like I did and I explain them in detail here.

HERE IS THE BEARINGS FOR OUR TRAILER!!!
Several people discovered what the bearing is for our factory Smith Co. TT trailer. The easiest way to locate some is to go the Amazon and type in " BEARING L44649 " and many choices will come up. You can buy just one bearing or multiple or complete sets with new seals. You can also use the descriptions there to search for other places on the internet that sell trailer parts or even on eBay.
Two things to remember to have with you on the road:
1) Grease the bearings ahead of time so they are ready to go if you need to install them on the side of the road.
2) Tools to remove the grease cap and the cotter pin and the castle nut inside and if the inside bearing is the bad one you need a way to remove the axle seal. And likely a bunch of rags because it will be a messy job!
Thanks to everyone that contacted me with the information needed to help with this issue.
Gerry
Great info! Thanks Gerry 👍
Thanks!
I put the buddies on recently, easy to install and I feel good about having them on the trailer. Thanks Gerry
Ted, Me too!
Another great video Gerry! Thank you. I'll be checking my axel to see what kind of grease fitting I have.
Rich, That is a good idea! Gerry
Gerry, as always your videos are awesome and packed with knowledge and bits of humor! The wife and I have been building a new home on acreage here in Tennessee and I’ve yet to get my girl out on the water!🤭 but hopefully it’ll be soon! Tight lines my friend
Russell, Congratulations on the new homestead! I am sure when you get the time you will be taking the TT for a spin. Build safely. Gerry
Checked my shop and didn't have any Electronic cleaner but will definitely pick one up tomorrow. I stored my pedals in my dry man cave for the winter and was planning to take the boat fishing today when this dumb old man realized he had forgotten to renew his fishing licence so will do that tomorrow also. Thanks for bringing that up cause I want mine to last at least forever. I know I saw someone that had made an improvement to the front boat bumper that made it much stronger but can' remember where I saw it. There is a possibility it might have been Frank Jones.
Steve, until recently I never used the contact cleaner until I saw Frank in a video say we should do this. I suspect others did not know that either. Gerry
Thanks Gerry for all these videos, you most likely saved me from a lot of head aches over the years
My intentions on doing this channel is to have a place we could gather to learn from each other and avoid headaches. I am glad you think this has done that for you and others. Thanks! Gerry
Missed opportunity on my part Gerry. After cleaning those bearings I was looking at the stamped numbers. I should've took more pictures. ☹️
John, If you ever take them apart again you can look then! 😷 Gerry
I have buddy bearings on my trailer and I check them regularly. A bad bearing can create a major headache.
Shiner Guy, years ago I was with someone at the stick marsh and that washboard dirt road cause a bearing failure. Luckily we had a spare and the tools to fix it. I know you were there recently. I hope the road is better now. That was back when there was only a dirt launch there. Gerry
@@LunkerFishing They have paved a small portion of the road but most of the 6 miles is still dirt. They do seem to grade it frequently but it is hard on my trailer.
