- Porsche has a stellar reputation when it comes to racing cars around a track. But you can’t fully comprehend Porsche’s prominence in the world of motorsport until you’ve seen its great big warehouse of famous race cars.
So that’s where we sent Top Gear Magazine’s Tom Ford, for the third and final episode of our series.
It’s in this special space that Porsche stores the winners of everything from the 24 Hours of Le Mans to the Dakar rally. There’s even one type of Porsche that won both…

Which of these motorsport legends is your favourite?
956
956/962
935 🤤🤤
962 😋
Yes
Another bit of 959 legacy outside of Porsche is that the 'PSK' was reverse-engineered by Nissan to develop the ATTESA-ETS that made the BNR32 Skyline GT-R the crushingly dominant touring car it was, underpinning every GT-R from 1989 to date.
mans sad. man sees Porsche's. mans happy.😌
Man can’t afford porsche. Man sad
😂😂😂😂
Man's happy. Mann sees low literacy comment with apostrophes where should be none, and no apostrophes where there should be. Man's sad.
It appears you’re a child. Not a man.
Circle of life
I love that this is the 3rd video about this place and I could just keep watching forever. Feel free to make 50+ more videos about the cars in this place
and make them longer
Me too I wonder if I could rent this place for my birthday party and have pizza and cake while I run around sitting in all the cars like a 40 year old little boy
I'm a big Porsche and sportscar racing fan so that place would be like heaven for me. Also interesting to see so many prototype road cars lurking in the background that never saw the light of day. And that is Porsche, they develop so many cars, both race and road, and then for various reasons, they don't take that project any further.
The Stuttgart racing legacy is second to none. Beyond legendary.
Indeed. I'm a Ferrari fan through and through but I always have to give Porsche the respect it has earned and deserves.
I'm the same age as Tom. I'm a huge Porsche fan. And have been since I was a kid. But unlike most Porsche fans, I like the front engined and mid- engined cars best. This is the absolute coolest car collection in the world. Thanks.
I also like the front engine cars. Had a 944 turbo a few years, and love driving it...every day, and some track days also
I love this multi-part series on Porsche! Wow!! Great work as always.
the fact that you didn't mention the Gulf 917 is a crime against humanity
Totally agree WTF
One of the most iconic
As a hardcore vintage sports car racing fan, I nerded out when that 917 spyder came up. Also the 908 LH at of the beginning of the video looks amazing!
That 959. 😮
The 917 16-cylinder produced about 850hp not 1200hp, although Mark Donohue believed that a turbocharged version could reach around 2000hp.
As I recall the telling of that story in his book, it was the Porsche factory engine guys who told Mark that crazy number.
Also... Not a V16...
Indeed😊
I was in this hall quite a few times.
Unbelievable feeling when you look at all these original unique classics at once...
My favorite Porsche race car is the 924 Carrera GTR, which took part in Le Mans 1980/81. Very similar to the "BOSS" car, which is a 924 GTP and also made it big at Le Mans. Like the 959, it was also a group B car 924 GTS Rallye - So not just the 911 cars with race and rallye history.
Greetings fellow Porsche nerd!
Loved seeing Porsche F1 car. You didn't show the 1970 917 gulf Porsche that raced at Le Mans though.
The 917's wood gear knob was actually for heat insulation purposes instead of weight saving. There was apparently a lot of heat transferring from the transmission to the gear knob, making it hot to touch
Always watching from Georgetown Guyana south America 🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾
aw I was expecting to see a GT1. Super interesting collection though.
It was in the other video
Beautiful and historic cars, pretty amazing! Not possible to pick out just one.
The 917/10 RC Cola car instantly brought me back to my childhood. I had one for my slot car track and I would race it against a Chaparral 2F for HOURS on end. Thank you for that!
Excellent video. My favorite is the 1978 935 twin turbo which I was allowed to drive (testing) on a private track for about 15 min. Belonged to a friend of my brother, and it won LeMans later that year. Beast! Love the 919 Evo as well.
I could spend days geeking out in there, totally awesome.
Maybe my world is small - but that is one of the best videos I have ever watched on CZcams. Bravo!
I'd agree had it been a 2 hour video. As is, all we got was a brief glimpse, which does not do that warehouse justice, with so many omissions. Maybe some day Porsche will allow someone to do a proper job. These amazing machines deserves someone to tell their history, followed by many camera angles, inside and out.
Just a couple of corrections; the 935 uses a 3.0-litre engine, and the 16-cylinder lump in that 917 reportedly produced around 750bhp, not 1200bhp as claimed.
Thanks for taking us along with you on the trip through what is surely the best secret stash of race cars “In the world “
What a collection 🔥🔥
I heard somewhere in there there is a lada (because they helped develop the Samara)
Porsche made an economy sedan for China called the C88...
I love that he pretty much went straight for the 959. What a machine! That's my favorite Porsche too!
They're all amazing machines.
935 is my favorite, the 70's 80's IMSA, Daytona, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen, were my favorite tracks.
I was in love with Porsche before, now I'm even more. Legendary models!
It’s good to see Tom Wooky Ford again ❤
Tom Ford was the best writer on top gear magazine in the 2000s, 2010s.
Good to see him live
I had a 1979 930 so my favorite is the 935. I was fortunate to go to the IMSA races at Watkins Glen and watch the 962s in all their glory. As an owner I got to sit in the Al Holbert/Derek Bell Lowenbrau Special.
Wow, that's amazing. 0nce in a lifetime experience. Thanks for to show us, petrol heads, all these pieces of design and engineering. Love Porsche's.👌💨🏁
Absolutely outstanding place!
Love this series. I would trade my left arm to have that acces you had!
WHERE IS HERE"" Whats the location of the Porsche race car warehouse ?
Such a special brand that create deep feelings for many around the world. Special cars are on another level
The 550 is such a stunning little car. I've only ever seen one in real life, parked up in Ginza, Tokyo. I nearly melted and had a proper car nerd moment, just taking in what I was seeing.
Sunoco Porsche 917-30 is my favorite, because I saw Mark Donohue win the Can-Am title in it, on 10/14/1973 at Laguna Seca.
Oh yess oh yes, top gear keep delivering this quality please ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I watched a 959 race a Toyota Supra at Oulton park in 1986. Both had just come out. The 959 owner also had the road version in the paddock. The registration plate was MOT 959… I think the owner was a Lord from Wales. I couldn’t believe how fast they were compared to the rest of the field
I'm glad they're saving them all ! very cool!
I really do need a bit of a lie-down after that - It reminds me of a behind the curtains tour through some special friends in the late 1980s at the factory, but it was NOTHING like that! And that video probably only showed 1/10th or less of what they have!
Used to do track days 700 mile trips to south of France and all in comfort what a bike it was ✊
there's some amazing cars in there but none of them are as cool as the Type 64 that Harris made that amazing video about. Still gives me goosebumps. Also for context should have mentioned what the Nordschleife record was before they took the 919 Evo there. Those kinds of step changes are very rare. The only other comparable example I'm aware of is Loeb smashing the Pikes Peak record (not in a Porsche)
They should turn this place into a museum!
Can we get more videos like this, with this same guy too???
The porsche flat 12 are by far the best sounding engines in my eyes! Flat/boxer engines in general are awsome but those.....So good......
“Emotionally exhausted” is the right word.
Incredible! It has to be the 956/962 for me.
The 16 cylinder 917 was actually 2 flat 8's with the fan driven off the center. They never were able to get the Mechanical Fuel injection to work consistently and long enough. then the 917 - 30's came along.
🔥🔥🔥🔥. All of them but where's my favorite the 918 ??
that's not a retired race car lol
I didn't know the mighty 917 had 16 cylinders. Didn't even know that anyone made a race car with more than 12. The Can-Am series truly was a thing of beauty and a walk on the edge. Can't begin to imagine what monstrosities we'd see today if the series hadn't ended and it continued with its unrestricted ways. My best guess: something resembling a 919 Evo!
The sixteen shown here was an R&D mule, it was never raced.
@@RickyJr46 Oh OK, thanks for clarifying that. But the fact that they even created this thing is a testament to what CanAm was. Don't you just wish the series went on for another couple of years, or at least long enough to see that 16 burner racing.
Auto Union built 16-cylinder race cars before WW2.
The only car that I don't know in that collection is the V16 917 thing. And that's how you can tell that I'm a big Porsche fan
Great video! thank you
The 935 is actually insane considering it’s an original manufactured car with almost a 1/1 scale hp weight ratio
I saw the V16 car back in 2005 in what was then the old Porsche Museum on the old Factory complex. I am guessing by the age of that building were all their Cars are stored that is near were the old Museum collection was.
I preferred the old Museum compared to the modern displayed collection but that is just me. as for the 917 V16 Spyder I do not recall Porsche ever running this car at any vintage motorsports event if the car even runs. one of the 959 Dakar cars was fully restored by Porsche last year to celebrate the anniversary of there 1st & 2nd places in that event.
I think the Le-Mans winning versions of the 959 only ran 2WD but I could be wrong.
The only other mind blowing Collection that can Top Porsche is found across the other side of Stuttgart at Mercedes Benz I have only done their Museum but they also have a heritage collection warehouse that is 2nd to none in the world and you also have the Porsche connection as Porsche worked a few times with Mercedes developing the Iconic SSK sports cars and even a land speed record car that looks like nothing you have ever seen and of course modern day Porsche as worked on Mercedes cars during the late 20th century.
Two of the most legendary brands in the world are to be found in the same city.
Thanks Tom. Quality work on a extraordinary collection. L.S.R = Liked, Subscribed and Recommended!
The engine shown was a flat 16 not V16. The flat 12 with some more cylinders. It might have gone racing in 1972 if the rules had not been changed
Great vid 🔥
Top Gear: You thought Tesla had a yoke steering wheel before anyone else"
K.I.T.T. : And I took that personally!
Top Gear ❤❤
Wonderful array of.... Historic motor cars...... One thing is for sure.......YOU WILL... NEVER.... SEE SUCH A COLLECTION OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES.... STORED IN.... ONE..... BUILDING *
UM VERDADEIRO PARAÍSO
This is some of the best TG content, delivered with passion.
Us old pcar racers always did that with the tach so we can see the red line! 13:42
What a great gig.
My favorite Porsche is the LeMan 959. 963, 935, 91 hybrid tribute, (the bolts alone :) , 919 EVO, 935, GT3 hybrid, RSR, 911, 911, 911...well just about all of them.
the 550 spyder is wowowowoowowow
A lot of historical F1 cars with the DFV are only held on with 4, 3/8 bolts lol.
Best car brand ever and forever. True to its identity for 90years
majestic. naturally, porsches wins at lemans highlight its legacy. but the company's very existence is heavily attributed to its success in learning from the production and racing at the highest stage. with that, theyve delivered whats generally the best to the world
What if you added dual turbo on V16 engine? It would perform better?
They're all here 😮🤯
That place is magic
Brands I lust after. Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Lancia, and any supercars.
If you know just how few bolts hold the hubs and brakes on you road car 16 bolts is plenty. Look into what holds the axleshafts in on C clip solid rear ends.
9:24 ... a naked Porsche ... OMG thats sooo sexy !
Wow
what's the orange car from 0:24 ?
ty
Thank you for the appreciation! Authenticity is our compass in a world of trends. Let's stay true to what drives us. Keep the spirit alive! 🚗💨
I wonder if they still have the Opel/Vauxhall ZAFIRA (!) that they helped engineer, somewhere in there....
5:05 Lancia D24
Tell James May that he nearly broke the law in Poland
Fantastic
908/3 and 909 are rocket ships.
Arbath?
Watching this video I‘m disappointed that special exhibitions are so rare at the porsche museum. Who wants to see stock cars like the macan and taycan, when these racing legends exist. Greetings from germany stuttgart
When they retire...they end up here: in paradise!
14:22 I'm not car enthusiast or whatever. I figure 16 bolts isn't the issue using the engine as a chassis, I would be more concerned about precision part deformation
14:19: A stressed member ? ....had the same thing on my wedding night .....
@9:24 Are you sure that 16 cylinder white 917 had a v16 and at a displacement of 6.5 L? ... I always thought it was a 5.4L flat 16.
A test mule was built with the flat 16 prototype engine but it was decided to turbo the 8 cylinder engine instead
❤ Toyota GR Corolla ❤️
Only thing missing is a gt1
I think I had a transformers toy in the 80's that was a 935
I didn t know this
I’m with on the 959, best Porsche ever
"Turbo. Turbo. Twin turbo."
-Tom Ford, 2024
😁😁😜😜😁😁
I really want to see LADA 2108!!!!
