The best tutorial I have seen yet on automotive paint gages. This is the first device I reach for before any paint correction or even looking at a used car. Even brand new vehicles are panel repaints. I have seen up to 18 mil and even 50 mil indicating body filler. Excellent video pan! 👍🇨🇦
Thanks! I thought it was a much needed video too. 😁👍🏻
I bought this gauge a year ago from CSW and this is a valuable tool which is a must have. What I am slacking on is saving reports and trying to decide which software to use for keeping a database. Thank you for the video.
As always, excellent video production and great information. However, the actual gauge seems like a $200 solution when a $75 solution would suffice and be less complicated (no app, no bluetooth).
Omg! Thank you so much Pan! I was waiting for a video like this. I wasn’t sure about it and don’t know much of the use for it and once I saw you uploaded this video. I knew I would well informed. 🙌🙌
Thanks Oscar!
Exactly the information I needed regarding paint polishing! I'm planning on purchasing my first ever DA polisher and going over my car before ceramic coating it. Paint thickness gauge might come in handy, but I think I'm good because my car has never been polished. Thank you Pan once again for all the great tips and tricks!

Just ordered one of these, can’t wait to get it in! Thanks Pan for all the amazing content! I’ve learned soo much watching your channel!👍
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback! What’s your favourite video on my channel so far?
They are all great, so far I’d say any of the direct product comparisons are my favorite, it really helps me decide on what to try next. It’s how I got turned on the turtle wax one and done compound and the hybrid wax. Great stuff!
Woooow! What an amazing, informative and educational video. You knocked this one out of the park and made a homerun!!! Very, very cool! Well done!

Great video Pan, When checking paint thickness I was told the panel edges are always thin so you should do these parts by hand, not with a DA Polisher. I suppose this should be based on the age of the vehicle's previous owner care and model.
That's not quite true. You would have to be careful around edges with a rotary type polisher (mainly used by professionals) as they could burn the edge at high speed. But for 99% of people, a dual action polisher is recommended and totally safe even on edges. You would really have to do something stupid for 15 minutes spinning on the same exact spot before being worried of burning through the clear coat.
Great info
Thanks Moises!
Definitely a handy tool to have! Great video.

I have that gauge. It was one of the best investments I made in my detailing venture. I coated a brand new Mazda CX-5 that had 2.5 to 3 mils average. Another car I detailed had close to 10 mils of paint. the coast of this gauge is far less expensive than burning through a paint finish and having to have it redone!
👍🏻
I really wish these worked on plastic because 90% of my exterior is not metal. Definitely an educational video that everyone should know about!
There are some way more expensive units that can read thickness on plastics if memory serves me right.
Great content as always Pan. How about a lower cost option for the DIY crowd?
Thanks Tim! I haven’t tested lower cost alternatives yet.
Hey Pan I have a video suggesting for you. Hi Pan… a question not about this video, I washed my car and using iron-X on wheels I over sprayed the lower door panels , iron- X was not left on more the 4-5 minutes and the sun was out but it was only 47 degrees, I used Koch chemie snow form and auto fanatic shampoo, after drying I notice the over sprayed iron-X didn’t come off, I rewashed the lower panels but still their , can I use my DA Poilsher with aN uno protect product and fine pad ?
I know not looking at the paint it’s hard for you to tell.
Or should I use a decom soap first on that area before trying to polish?
Thanks
Ken
Salut Pan ☺️j’ai le même device pis il travail super bien c’est vraiment bénéfique et pratique 👌👌
Excellent!
Hi,
Thank you so much for your helpful video!
I did paint correction to my 2022 Altima recently and the guy told me ,after he's done and used the gauge, that the thickness in the corrected area is bigger than the other parts of the car, saying that's because during the first correction, that a dealership did for my car, they probably repainted the damage area. Do you think that makes sense?
Another question if you don't mind: does the gauge only measure the thickness of the clear coat, or the paint as well? Does the higher number mean more thickness?
Thank you so much in advance!
Sami
Recently bought an 06 black mustang for a project car. Had the front end repainted but the rest of it is starting to oxidize. It’s not peeling but looks more like a foggy black I want to try to match it to the new paint as close as possible. What would be the danger zone for polishing something like that? Would it end up looking worse when I’m finished? If I keep it waxed, would it help the clear coat not fail?
My friend wants me to compound and polish, using Sonex for a panel that just got painted. What would you suggest I do because there is swirl marks and scratches ?

Great video Pan so I have this Ford F-150 black since 2016 with 11k was used and you make me think cause I getting closer to do 2 step correction do I need check for the thickness of the clear coat or not for shure I got two doors repainted. Thanks 👍🏾😎
It depends if it had paint correction done on it before. If you owned this brand new since 2016 and never polished it, it's safe to assume that you can go ahead with your 2-step correction without measuring the thickness. If you bought the truck used and are unsure if it was polished before, then yes you should get a paint thickness gauge to be safe.
@@PanTheOrganizer since I have it I didn’t don’t know before thanks 👍🏾😎
What do you use on Plastic and fiberglass on New cars ???
Is there anything that can read the clear coat on plastic or fiberglass
I wish these could read plastic, composite, and carbon fiber panels for folks that have Corvettes, Vipers, and high end exotics.
Pan i have two questions for you. How much difference in measurement will do a layer of ceramic coating? What else could mean a high number on a panel?
It generally means there’s been body work if one panel is significantly more mil than the others
Correct!
Help pan good morning. It would be funny to try it on my bmw e34 lol
Hi Pan… an unrelated question, I sprayed my wheels with iron X and got on bottom of my door panels notice it over sprayed but wasn’t left on more than 4-5 mins, some sun was out but it was 47 degrees, anyway after doing my wash I notice I left the over sprayed marks which I can’t seem to remove with my regular car washing , I use Koch chemise snow form, and auto fanatic shampoo, will I need to machine polish the marks out ?,
I know not seeing the marks left over is difficult for you to evaluate. Any help will help me.
Thanks
Ken
Hard to say as I wasn't there, but they clearly state with iron removers to never let them dry on the paint. A light polish might be needed if shampoo doesn't get rid of it. Perhaps try contacting CarPro and ask them.

That only measures the clear coat? Does it measure the primer and base paint as well?
As I said in the video, it measures the entire paint thickness, from the substrate (metal) all the way to the clear coat. The "paint" as we know it is the primer, base coat (color coat) and the clear coat.

Another awesome video and content/tutorial good friend. Looks like a awesome tool.sad we pay too dollar 4 cars and mfgs keep thinning the clear coat.b well good friend
Yeah paints are getting thinner and thinner. But luckily they are improving the quality.
There was a weird edit at about 4:50 talking about this, but is the instrument measuring total coating thickness down to metal substrate or clear coat thickness only? You mentioned clear-coat is typically 1.5-2.0 mils, so is that really all you have to work with? How can you ensure you don't polish through the clear coat into the color layer?
The instrument measures total thickness of all the paint system up to the metal, meaning primer + base coat + clear coat.

This tool is made for measuring paint thickness on all steel, zinc plated steel and aluminum painted surfaces. For any further details, I highly encourage that you go see their website, or reach out to the company.
@@PanTheOrganizer thank you for your help and your time to answer my questions…
Thi ,ing seriously about getting one of these.
If you often polish used vehicles, it's a must have for sure.
Did they have products like this at SEMA 22? What’s the least we can spend to get one of these that won’t let us down? I actually went from watching some CZcams videos for 4 months and now doing professional paint correction in my garage (I ran my polisher 8 hours per day for four months practicing) I’ve been going down to my local Ceramic Pro and buying those guys pizza to use theirs.
I haven't tested other paint thickness gauges really... This one isn't that expensive and works super well for me. There are gauges that can cost upwards of 1000$, so this one is a great value.
Hi Pan, another great video. Quick question - I've been asked by a potential client if I could machine polish his 2005 VW T5 white van. The vehicle is white and the paint is very flat - feels like there is no lacquer left on some of the panels. The owner has been using Stardrops and a soft brush to regularly clean it, plus it lives outside all year around. Would the depth gauge still help me work out if there is enough paint to polish? I've been very honest with him and said that there might not be much room for improvement and want to make sure I set the right expectation. Cheers, Neil
It's hard to say from a distance without even seeing the vehicle. And white vans are usually single stage. You can still polish them. So yes a paint depth gauge would still let you know how much paint thickness you have to work with, but if the lacquer or clear coat is completely gone, there's not much you'll be able to do to it.
A full respray might be needed. Paint correction (machine polishing) can't bring back failed of missing clear coat. Paint correction is made to remove oxidation, scratches and swirls from clear coat.
@@PanTheOrganizer Thank you
@@PanTheOrganizer Really appreciate the advice.
Salut Pan.
Hello Pan, so the nexptg measures the primer, basecoat and clearcoat all together?
All paint thickness gauges measure the overall thickness of the paint meaning primer, base coat (color) and clear coat. All the way to the metal substrate.

I'd have liked the video to tell me more about the results.
Example.. I found that a panel on my car had a second layer of paint how should I tackle this?
The guage shows the panel to be amber if the paint is over 6mm, green if between 2 and 6mm what does this tell me?
Just a bit more detail would have been nice as knowledge is power.
Pan are the cheaper nexptg gauges ok or do you need to spend more to get more accurate readings thanks
I haven’t tested any other models from them unfortunately.
@@PanTheOrganizer thanks Pan
Does it only measure the thickness of the clear coat? Or the total amount of substances on the plate suchas paint, etc., How much less is the number not suitable for polishing? thank you'
The total thickness of the entire paint system. Primer, base coat and clear coat.
Obviously you don't want to remove all 1.5 - 2mm of clear, so how much is safe to remove before you shouldn't go any further? And also what is the lowest number reading on the paint depth gauge that would indicate the paint is too thin to compound and polish?

Related, wondering of the manufacturers, who is producing the highest quality paint finishes? I think it's one factor that might sway me from one car to another where many other things are pretty similar.
By far in my experience the luxury German brands have some of the best paint quality by far. I own a Porche, and have owned two BMWs and an Audi, and I have detailed hundreds of cars in the last two decades and German cars always stand out for exceptional paint quality and overall fit and finish too.

If the paint thickness is 3.0 or 2.9, what can be done? Is repainting the only solution?
You are getting close to a zone I wouldn't really feel comfortable polishing. Up to you to decide if you want to risk it. I can't take that decision without actually seeing the vehicle and person and running my own tests.
Saw a post of Facebook group , front, back and roof panels was 5 mils, however the doors and wings/fenders was only 2 mils on a brand new car
I am not surprised. What brand, make and model?

This tool is handy when buying a classic car especially, when the selling party claims that the vehicle has its original paint
If I'm getting average readings of 4.0 mils on the Hood. Then if I measure in door sil and get a reading of 2.0 mils. Would that mean I have about 2.0 mils of clear coat to work with?
No.its the total thickness and door jambs have the least amount of clear coat on any car.you barely wanna polish door jambs.just literally go over it with one pass and call it a day
No. I explained this in the video. You usually have approximately 2 mils of clear coat, but that has nothing to do with the measurements in door jams.
The door jam measurement is simply an indication of the thinnest overall thickness of the paint (primer, base coat and clear coat combined).
@@PanTheOrganizer thanks for the reply. Love your videos!
Thanks Scott. What is your favourite video on my channel so far?
That was a paaaaaaaaaaaantastic tutorial and well done
Thanks Mike!
Hi Pan 👋
Hi!
I talk to the company about the acuracy range they said 2 percent device and 5 percent calibration and said when testing the paint it will be 7 percent +- accurate. That seems a lot to me. Most I’ve seen is 2 to 3 percent. What’s your thoughts
I don't have any thoughts, as it's not that important in the grand scheme of things. You're not looking for ultra precision, you're just looking to have an estimate of how much paint thickness you are working with. The tolerances are good enough that it will give you a good idea.
Keep in mind you're not just getting a reading of the clear coat thickness here. You're getting a reading for the thickness of the entire paintwork, from the primer, base coat and clear coat.
My Norton software did not like the link for the US - said It was an “unsafe site.”
🤣🤣 Absolutely no worries. It’s a serious business.
Is there a way to know the paint on plastic surface ?
Really expensive units can measure that
Correct
Salut pan !

Hi Pan, I recently left the Detroit Autorama. Meguires had a huge display and a few other detailing companies had small displays. My favorite, Turtle Wax was nowhere at the Autorama! SHAME on Turtle Wax.
