Whose lightsaber is this? I’ve asked almost 10,000 people this question and you know what I’ve learned? Everyone thinks something different, and for different reasons. Is this Rey’s lightsaber because she’s the one who currently has it? Is it Anakin’s lightsaber because he made it? They’re a lot of ways of looking at this, but in this video, we’re going to answer this question using the only unbiased source of truth available to us. The law.

- PLOT TWIST -
In TROS, Rey hands this lightsaber to Leia (after having trained with it for a bit) and says "I'll earn your brother's saber one day". A couple of complications from this.
1) Rey 'gives it back' to Leia. So Rey doesn't own it. Leia does?
2) Rey refers to it as "YOUR BROTHER'S" saber.
3) My brain hurts.
Woah this is deep
What about Kylo Ren he's connected to the Skywalkers?
Wait in Jedi challenges you can change the color of Leia's lightsaber to green/purple BUT the original color is Blue so once you beat kylo Ren in Jedi challenges it's a whole new lightsaber and it's yours, yeah it may be the hilt the hilt doesn't matter it's the kyber Krystal and when you change the color you switch out the Chrystal so in conclusion Reas Saber is YOURS ONCE YOU CHANGE THE COLOR IN JEDI CHALLENGES
MIND BLOWN!!
Once TROS is out to the public and not just in theaters, please do a mini-sequel if anything changes in TROS
StarWars IRL Also at the end of TROS, she buries the saber as well as Leia's personal saber and dawns a new yellow saber which would now be considered hers since she most likely constructed it herself. As such, Since Luke only trained with that saber and built his own and Obi-Wan only ever held onto it, and now that Rey has her personal saber I say the ownership reverts back to Anakin since no one is currently using it and he built it.
of course its anakins he killed like 33 kids with it

YES!
Doesn't he say it was your fathers lightsaber. Implying it no longer is.
Chloe Smith no he only says ‘your fathers lightsaber’
It's Anakin's lightsaber. He made it, and Obi-wan took it from him after defeating him in combat. Palpatine dubbed him "Darth Vader," after saving his life. Most, if not all, Sith Lords assumed a new name when they embraced the Dark Side, but Anakin remained despite what he (Vader) called himself. Luke made his own lightsaber as part of becoming a Jedi Knight. Rey Palpatine made her own weapon, even though Disney Star Wars (legal) is not canon.
It was anakins then it was lukes then it was reys. It helped guide luke and rey in their journeys but Rey Skywalker made her own in the end just like luke did. The only difference she didnt lose the saber, she gave it up willingly to bury the Skywalker saber and dawn a new one.
Sidious dubbed him darth Vader after he killed mace windu
@@tanakinskywalker7089 that's what he meant my guy. He said Sidious dubbed Anakin as Vader after he "saved his life." Meaning Anakin saved Palpatine's life. After Anakin kills Mace Windu seemingly and prevents him from killing his soon to be master, i.e. savin his life, Sidious dubs him as Vader

When Luke "lost" his lightsaber, it was still literally, physically in his clenched fist, therefore never leaving his possession. If someone removed it from his hand, they would be stealing it.

Technically not
i dont know when they found it but if it was a long time after the hand was cut off it could have mostly rotted away
But he lost his hand so is his hand still his possesion though? He didnt go collect his hand nor his lightsaber so didnt he abandon both?
Obi wan stole Anakin's lightsaber. Therefore it is still ANAKIN'S LIGHTSABER
Legally Anikan Skywalker is not dead until the end of episode 6. Changing your name isn't a legal death. Meaning Obi-wan STOLE Anikan's lightsaber and then gave it to Luke. At this point in time it is still Darth Vader's property until it is salvaged and the appropriate amount of time has passed for legal transfer of unclaimed property.
Make those corrections and then take into account known laws of the old republic, the empire, and the new republic and you will have a complete record of ownership.
so in the sequels its technically lukes but all the others its Anakin's
Houston Davis new republics claim laws are finders keepers so through the rabbit hole it is reys since maz finds it in the days of the new republic
And we know this from the newest episode of The Mandalorian
Houston Davis Lol I didn’t even think of that 🤯
TRUE
Dam wtf you went so deep into this YOU OWN THIS SABER
This shouldn’t be a question, it’s Anakin’s lightsaber…even LucasFilm acknowledge this when they have Rey bury it and build her own. That lightsaber was never Rey’s, a case for Luke can be made but it still doesn’t ring true because ANH (the first Star Wars movie ever) literally refers to it as “your fathers lightsaber” it’s Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber.
Rey saying *“I’ll earn your brother saber one day”* doesn’t mean it’s Luke’s, it just means she doesn’t know the full story of the lightsaber in question. Luke would never himself call that lightsaber his own, he would 100% refer to it as his fathers lightsaber…the one he himself construct is his lightsaber.
Spoiler:
Its tatoine’s light saber
It’s belongs now to Anakin’s most hated foe; sand
No, technically it’s owned by the planet that the Kyber crystal came from which I believe is the same planet that was turned into starkiller base. Now that it is destroyed it still ends up being reys because of all the gifting and finders keepers crap and then she gives it to the ground on tattoine so now it doesn’t belong to anyone
Kinda
APPLE JUICE so you’re saying that it was ilum’s, then anakin’s, then padame’s, the obi-was was the gaurdian to hold onto it for Luke, then scavengers’, then maz kenaz’s (forget how to spell her name), then Finn acts as the custodian, then gives it to Rey, who tries to give it back to Luke, fails, then succeeds, just to go back to owning it, then finally it’s buried in the ground on tattoine.
How was the Rise of Skywalker?
When luke threw it off of a cliff he was also littering.
Now the lightsaber is no ones cause rey left it on the desert planet and got a new yellow saber
Rey doesn’t have a light saber, she never wielded one 😂
Anakin was redeemed in the Return of the Jedi, therefore, he owned the lightsaber.
He also died, so it no longer belonged to him
Mr. Dark so that means that it is Luke’s Lightsaber.
But when he dies, it’s passed on to Leia and Leia gives it to Rey.

Also, based on law, it would not be Rey's lightsaber. He must have forgotten that in episode 6, We see Anakin come back to his senses and "kill" the emperor. battle1 obi wan took it from Anakin, and gave it to Luke, it’s still Anakins
Wrong, your argument is flawed because you’re using children as an example for a discussion about PROPERTY. There’s a difference between a child and a lightsaber. You can’t use that as a comparison as the laws surrounding both are vastly different. Which is what this guy is using, the law in real life.
And after the R.O.S, nobody owns the lightsaber as it was put back in Luke’s home. But the person who owned it last was Kylo Ren given the requirements for being an owner.
CloakVenom btw your statement is wrong because it still represents property
It’s ANAKIN’S. Luke’s lightsaber was the green one.

Luke’s is green Anakin has the blue and reys is yellow
Yes
I speak English yes
Wait rey can't have a yellow lightsaber it's for temple guards only
Reys is orange I mean she’s not a temple gaurd
Technically Luke owned two sabers for a short period of time. Anakin's old saber and his new green one, assuming he constructed his new saber in at least 3 months.
The issue with this is that we have to take star wars lore into consideration, which means that the lightsaber, no matter who has it, still belongs to the being who imbued it with the force. Just because a person uses it doesn't mean it belongs to them since we've seen in multiple stories that a person who takes a lightsaber from, say, a sith tomb, could be possessed by the sith spirit since the lightsaber is imbued with apart of the spirit. Its why Luke's lightsaber was never Anakins, it was the green lightsaber he himself built, and I'd like to point out something else, a very important detail that people tend to ignore where even in the OT, it was considered Anakin's lightsaber, and that's when Obi Wan gave the lightsaber to Luke, where he said "This is your fathers ligthsaber." Right there, it shows that, even though Kinobe had possession of it, he still considered it Anakins since that's the ideology of the Jedi. So because of these, I have to say it has always been and will always be Anakins lightsaber, and that, until Rey builds her own, she technically doesn't have an actual lightsaber of her own.
This is fucking true laddy
Geoff Roach that’s the best way to explain how the Star Wars universe works I tried to explain like the name of the lightsaber is Anakin’s Lightsaber but it belongs to Rey but yeah in the Star Wars universe that’s how it works
Geoff Roach Be the Force is with you
Geoff Roach said what I was going to say but said it to a more refined degree, I completely agree.
If we take the force into this it would be Rey's lightsaber in Force Awakens due to it calling to her and rejecting Ben but in The Last Jedi it is in limbo between Ben and Rey suggesting that they both have equal claim to it which works rather well considering Anakin was the chosen one and Rey and Ben represent the light and dark respectively
Obi-Wan stole the saber from Anakin, still his property
rey in the rise of skywalker putting the saber in the sand! the sand owns the saber...
It's Anakin's Lightsaber, Lightsabers are like paintings they have one single creator. Rey's lightsaber is the yellow one, Luke's Lightsaber is the green one, it doesn't matter who was using it at what time. It will always be called Anakin's Lightsaber.

7:46 Maz said that the “lightsaber was Luke’s.”
Therefore, she knew it was Luke’s saber.
And since she didn’t return it to Luke, it is larceny by finding.
Therefore, she technically committed a crime
Well in that case, since Anakin was still technically alive, and Luke and Obi wan knew that the lightsaber was his, they committed larceny by finding, as they should've returned his lightsaber to him.
@@SomeInternetBoi But didn't Darth Vader say he killed Anakin Skywalker?
Maz new it was Luke's, but she didn't have to return it because she didn't find it, she bought it from someone who found it and sold it after the three month time period expired.

also she had no way to return it to Luke so after three months it would be hers
But didn’t Obi-Wan steal it? Anakin never gave him permission to take it, so it’s Anakin’s.
Split personality logic, at that point anakin didn't exist but vader did therefore did not have a claim to the saber as anakin wasn't about it was vader, obi wan saw that and took his old apprentices saber back, vader was not his apprentice anakin was, anakin may have been there physically but within the force and mentality the person himself was vader and didn't have a claim to the saber.......legally in time to date it would be reys yes but original owner of the lightsaber is anakin and anakin will always be the true owner of that saber...... Rey only has a claim to it via inheritance

Actually Rey buries the lightsaber in the sand and it sunk in it. Therefore it became the whole skywalkers family lightsaber because we see Luke and Leila as force ghosts in there and it only makes sense that Anakin is now the owner as well because that was his new home when he came back to help his mom. So actually it is the whole Skylar family lightsaber now. It this is my theory, it is still Anakins lightsaber because he is technically not dead because he learned the path to immortality and he is still living in with the force. So according to legal terms, he never actually intended to gift it to anyone meaning that it is still anakins.
It’s Anakin’s because Luke has his Green lightsaber and Rey has her new yellow one
Sp00ngy she used it to make the yellow one

Chief also she buried it in sand, ANAKIN HATES SAND
The law doesn’t recognize sith transformations. Anakin Skywalker will always be Anakin Skywalker. Therefore, obi wan stole the lightsaber, making every owner thereafter illegitimate.
The law doesn't recognize events in Star Wars!
Yeah the video does not really make sense on that point. If I buy a car and 3 years later I decide to give myself a cool new nickname, does that mean that I stole my own car? No, its still mine. The mistake in the video is to assume that Darth Vader and Anakin are 2 different persons. What explanation would have made sense is that Anakin was pronounced dead not long after he fully became Darth Vader (with his armor) so that Vader's real identity would stay hidden. Therefore now we could say that it became's Luke legitimate property. Anyway in the time of the Empire Lightsabers were illegal so I guess its property of the Empire lmao.
that is almost true, but if palpatine made anakin’s mother pregnant, then technically rey is a descendant of anakin which makes it legal. Every ownership between rey and anakin was illegal
Legally and biological he is still anakin
@@reid2362 That was confirmed a lie made by Palpatine to help sway/keep him to the dark side, also I am not sure but if Palpatine is Anakin's "father" Ray would be his neice not a direct descendant but merely a reletive direct descendants are children and children of you children etc

Me: sees thumbnail
Me in my head: How can you do this, it’s outrageous, it’s unfair!!
Ironically the scene you used of Anakin on the geonosis conveyor, he’s not even using this lightsaber
Figured I'd chip in my 2 cents (not saying its the right answer just what I go by). A youngling has to complete their first lightsaber before becoming a full Jedi. As we know (From Clone Wars which is cannon) to select their Crystal the younglings must enter a crystal cave on the planet of Ilum and the crystal will call to them, then they must overcome their biggest weakness to retrieve their crystal and leave the cave. Taking this into consideration, WHO would have retrieved the crystal embedded in the saber in question.......It would be Anakin. Anakin overcame the trial of the crystal cave, exited with his crystal and therefore constructed the saber using his earned crystal. Now is it true that Rey and Luke "Possessed" the saber at some point yes. But as we see, they also constructed their own sabers which we can assume were done so after retrieving their own Crystals, overcoming their own obstacles, and completing their first builds. So here is how I conclude; Luke and Rey were "younglings" or "Padawans" at most (using Jedi terms of rank) while using Anakin's Saber, and during that time they learned, trained, and used it but given the owner of the CRYSTAL that powered it has a connection with Anakin, it is Anakin's saber who was the only true JEDI to use it. You can let your son or daughter drive your car while they are learning but if you own the TITLE to the car, they may use/possess the car at times, but until they own the title it is yours. Saber = Car, Crystal = Title. Thats all I got.
Everything was less confusing
But disney just gotta ruin it all
Very true
Aaand for you: And for you: Not Disney. Lucasfilm. As with all other times so far, when things have been released about Star Wars. Disney gives Lucasfilm just the money for movies, series, games, comics or books. If Lucasfilm say things about Star Wars, then they are canon and correct.
Kylo is a descendant, he has a legal argument that the lightsaber may indeed be his.
Not Real but hes dead now...
The dedication that went into answering this question is unparalleled! You sir, just earned my subscription. Loving the content.
He stole the whole video from matpat
My nightmares have become a reality
Obi-wan Kenobi’s words are “this is your father’s lightsaber”. “Your father’s lightsaber” these words alone sun it up already.
and then gives it to Luke, and then he loses it, and Maz finds it and gifts it to Rey, Rey tries to give it to Luke but he doesnt accept it so its hers from now on. Thats the video resumed xd
Well, if Rey gives it back to Luke, he is allowed to throw it off the cliff if he wants to.
@@jimmyneutron5205 Did you like, see the video?
Yeah i watched it no duh
Comandante Thorn still anakins
Obi wan. "Gives luke lightsaber with no rules"
Luke. "Looks down the hilt and presses button.
Obi wan. Oh no
Luke. "Gets lightsaber in eyeball"
Obi wan. Time to find leia
she buried it in the sand with leias and made a new saber out of her staff.
I think it's safe to say that it just belongs to the Skywalker family.
no one cares who currently owns it. it is anakins lightsaber because he created it and mastered it.
WRONG
@@gginso5512 care to explain why it is wrong?
The only person in this debate that the lightsaber cannot be is Anakin's because Anakin's lightsaber was lost in Cloud City when Luke's hand got cut off that lightsaber was never recovered the lightsaber in the sequel Trilogy is the one that Luke constructed after Star Wars V between Star Wars 6
GGinso no he’s not lol did u not know that George the creator of star wars said this will always be anakins lightsaber
Also both luke and rey have a different one not Anakin tho
Actually, you're wrong. Anakin was a Jedi, which meant living a celibate life,no wife and no children. And since the Jedi Order worked as an important part of the Republic, legally his wife and children weren't allowed to own the lightsaber, because at the eyes of the law, their marriage doesn't exist.
this is the best description.
Ok you just blew my mind
Actually the republic and the Jedi order were different entities, this is why order 66 could have happened. Neither side owned the other. Also Jedi didn’t have to be celibate. And in a sense this is a similar law about how being a sith wasn’t illegal. Under the republics rule, which I believe all Jedi were citizens of the republic, it is of course legal to have children and be married. Under the Jedi’s rule, u cannot. When Anakin fought Obi-Wan he was no longer Anakin, he was Darth Vader, therefore as the video states, he is not in ownership of the lightsaber.
He also was no longer a Jedi, but a citizen of the republic, but still, Anakin was murdered by Vader, and Vader can attest to that
I'd argue the same effect happens though but through everyone's favorite moisture farmer, Uncle Lars. Think about it - he's the last legal relative surviving Anakin so HE gets the lightsaber and, knowing who Obi Wan is, allows him to be the guardian of the saber until Luke comes of age, legally. Luke then comes of age, etc etc etc.
Luke: "What's this?"
Obi Wan: "Your father's lightsaber."
.......case closed
Which company or maker is this lightsaber in the video?
Rey: I’m not related to him.
Me: so you stole Bens lightsaber
YES
But Rey is a clone of like so therefore they are blood siblings. So she didn’t steal it. Luke let her keep it too.
@@sr_aqui have you watched the rise of skywalker?
Yeah, I’m pretty sure Rey is a clone of Luke’s hand
@@sr_aqui and where have you heard that from?
It’s Anakin’s saber because we all underestimated his power.
I never underestimated his power. He is my favorite Jedi and Sith.
Don’t try it

After watching this video I can see the new Kenobi series in two views, watching my favorite character after all this time, and seeing what he was doing with the Lightsaber after all this time.
