I had a better time with this one than people led me on to believe, but Lost Company was a letdown.
"Pineapple on pizza? Not a fan."
Bless you Mandalore.
MandaloreGaming what is that Nod half man, half tank thing that keeps coming up in your videos?
I'm not that familiar with the franchise.
Glad you liked the game despite issues.
Maybe some day I can see you wandering through underground world of Arx while Arkane is still alive not butchered by Bethesda (like they did it with Fallout franchise).
The first half of the first game was good, but after you get the Shadowhand it REALLY started to drag for me.
It's not terrible it's just...draining.
Considering the story, I always suspected the plot was more of an after thought. Like they finished the game first, realized they didn't really have a story around it and just quickly threw it in. It feels like a first draft.
In your list you mentioned "Boiling point'. I don't know if you'll even see this or even care to check him out, but there's this awesome creator that goes by the name of Tehsnakerer who covered that game and it's followups. check that series out - good 3-5 hours of critique.
They actually said Central Powers rather than Axis in a WW1 themed game, 1110/10 game of the century.
i imagine as a polish studio they had wwi show up in their education more

Fighting dragons in a biplane sounds like something I would want out of an alternate history game.

There was a book on Spetsnaz by Viktor Suvorov, which starts by describing how every time a Red Army soldier is ordered to stop he starts digging a trench.
adenowirus that’s cool, but Russians =\= Germans
GamerRoman I am fortifying this position
Edgy Dad the best offense, is a good defense
+adenowirus - That is actually quite standard behavior for soldiers of any Nation in an active combat zone or out in the field in many capacities. It's smart.
I wrote that fortification joke into a history paper. Naturally, the professor didn't even comment on it.
"Da, this is correct."
You were allowed to put jokes into your papers?
@Robzah Well crap. They never allowed us to do it.
A pinch of humor in an otherwise academic paper is never a bad thing. I got high marks in High School during presentations for a joke or two to keep the class interested.
@@williamlydon2554 I only managed to get attention when I was telling about how they sawed a guy's head off with a wooden saw.
I wasn't so sure about this until I heard the line before the final boss.
"I wanted to fight my war but you dragged me into yours"
the first world war changed everyone's opinion of war, maybe this entire game is actually very clever highly metaphorical version of ww1. like the incredibly rapid advancements of weapons are being represented by the fantasy elements of the game. the gauntlet casts mustered gas after all
nah, it's pretentious. You don't get to go galavanting around the whole game, spewing garbage one-liners and half baked catchphrases, whilst murdering zombies, demons, and other fantasy monsters only to pull a "loss of innocence" speech out of fuggin *nowhere* directed at _Satan_ of all things. It's tasteless, disingenuous, and outright disrespectful at best.
I didn't finish Necrovision, but I do kinda like it for the simple reason that it exists. The fact that it's this ww1 game with demons, dragons, mechs and so on is the kind of insanity we need more of. I did find it's gameplay foundation solid but like you said suffers from it's bugs and when you reach hell it gets tedious(which is where I left it all off). I only played lost company for a bit, but probably should get around back to it.
"I do kinda like it for the simple reason that it exists."
That resonates with me. It's incredible on paper, but falls short of being the gunwizard dark messiah in the trenches.
+1 here, I sing its praises to everyone I know who'd be sympathetic to them because I want more games like this. So far, the most succinct way I've been able to describe it is "WW1 by way of Painkiller and Army of Darkness." Yeah, this game is full of many, many flaws, but the basic premise and gameplay work so well that I can't help but enjoy it nonetheless and I always have a big, guilty smile on my face playing it. Mostly. Dropping all the human weapons in the latter parts of the game was a disservice to the atmosphere, I think.
Wasn't there also a game that was basically "D-day but with dinosaurs"?
Yeah there absolutely was, Dino D day
If I have to describe this game's failings, I'd say it's due to a lack of money, time, and polish, and not from a lack of love or enthusiasm.
For those wondering, I believe that final boss music is Globus - Preliator
Prediator
Need to admit I thought this comment was a joke till i hit that point of the video.
Knew I recognized that song
Yes it is. Globus = patrician taste.
It almost reminded me of unreal.
"Ah, Pain!" - Simon 1916
"Close your eyes...and pray" - Simon, 1916 while somehow using an MP18... I guess he prayed for it?
"Nothing can save you know..." Hell is short on proofreaders, apparently. Truly terrifying.
I can't help but imagine the main character as an incredibly obsessive man who insists he finishes reading anything he starts and never reading it again, gunning down enemy troops with the letter held in his teeth and his eyes going in different directions.
This is hilarious and will only improve my enjoyment of the game. Thank you.
And the minute something gets his attention enough to make him speak, he snaps his other eye from the letter immediately back in the right direction. Like some sort of human-sized predator chameleon that recognized a bug it could eat.
The First World War is one in which a single battle would often result in the absolute obliteration of an entire country's military with only a hollow shell left behind. For the British it was the Somme. These were the men who signed up at the beginning of the war, they were called the 'New Army'. That's bc the professionals from the pre-war era were long dead by this point.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the Somme resulted in the almost complete annihilation of the British Army as a fighting force. After this ONE battle, they'd NEVER be capable of taking the fight to Germany and trying to break through the lines to win the war ever again.
The slaughter was so horrendous that there are COUNTLESS stories of German machine gun crews DESPERATAELY trying to wave the oncoming British soldiers off. You wouldn't see soldiers doing that again in such large numbers until the very last few days of the war after the armistice had been signed. Here they did it because they were routinely killing a thousands of men in a matter of MINUTES.
The story is much the same for Verdun, after that ONE battle, France would never be capable of launching a large scale offensive ever again.
Now there would be offensives, but never in the scale of The Somme or Verdun. Haig should have been shot as a war criminal, even the French generals realized that the slaughter had to stop at Verdun. Haig ended up being in charge and the ONLY reason we didn't get a smaller scale repeat of the Somme ever few months is bc the government had to withhold troops from him to stop the bastard from throwing them away like he did in this one battle.
Ded Mosh germans waved them off? Oh mate, you know you fucked up when your enemy is trying to save your soldiers life.
Paul Enan I shit you not. That's really how bad the slaughter had become. The British had one massive problem. Field Marshall Haig. Look him up. When you think of the stereotypical WW1 general who's sitting in his villa 50 miles away from the front lines in splendor, Haig is the guy who basically started that.
Haig also despised Americans and did everything to put them under his command and not to let us have our own formations.
Paul Enan another interesting story involving that is the last person to be killed in the first world war. His name escapee but he was a sergeant from Maryland.
Anyway the armistice had been signed but didn't take effect for some time so lots of people died for no reason. They knew the war was ending. Now this guy ended up getting himself killed about THREE MINUTES before the armistice officially went into effect.
He stood up about 5 mins before the armistice started and charged a German position opposite his own trench. Keep in mind everyone knew the war was minutes away from ending so nobody wanted to kill anymore. But this sergeant was running at the German position with his weapon.
Well the Germans started waving and screaming at him to stop and get down but he didn't listen. They ended up waiting until he was practically on top of them before finally reluctantly shooting him.
Even his own platoon couldn't understand why he did it. His comrades didn't ever blame the Germans, for good reason. They tried their damndest to not kill him.
Now ad for the Somme. That was TWO YEARS EARLIER. At the height of the war! The Germans waving off the British troops in 1916 when nobody knew when the war was going to end and the Germans were winning so much that it was like a carnival shooting gallery definitely tells you how many people were being slaughtered in a matter of minutes over the course of weeks. Even the Germans couldn't stomach the killing anymore.
Ded Mosh The cynical thing is that this battle was technically an allied victory. While the huge fuck up inflicted gigantic casualties in one day, the frontlines were a lot wider, and not everywhere did the germans have 3 hours soberness and some concrete at hand. Pretty sure the casualties at whole were somewhat the same, but the germans that died there were a lot more experienced and therefore "more valuable". So yeah, no wonder they waved those poor bastards off. Those germans had already seen 2 years of war.
we know. I'm pretty sure most of us have been through middle school
I want more game which mixes technology, magic and guns. Like games where they all go hand in hand. I think that is one of the reasons why I just love the 40K setting.
It's always "Magic and technology aren't compatible" or "Chose one or the other". You almost never get "Here's a robot arm and and a firebolt, use them both on the enemy."
“Get out of my way and let me enchant my power armour.”
The Watercolors 205 joke is incredible.
Also, the WW1 sections from Darkness were really good. The wide open areas full of respawning zombie infantrymen were a bit annoying, but that just taught you to clean up after yourself and eat their hearts before they get back up again. Good times.
...This makes me think that Mandy should check out Titanic: Adventure Out of Time.
By saving a certain painting from the sinking ship, you actually made Hitler pretty darn famous and even happy enough to become a great painter. What an interesting history- changing game... and one that has a golden ending that would have led to a world that is far better than the one we're living at present.

The setting and concept for this game is what I love about it, wish we see more like it
The gameplay sounds amazing barring the shoddy AI and excessive hordes. I am German and can confirm this. After the last family meet up, we have started bringing beer everywhere, we also wear a mini stein around our necks to drink from in case of an emergency stranding.
You do something unique, Mandalore. I'm a seasoned gamer in my thirties but you still manage to show me games from the past that I HAVEN'T seen before, and that I WOULD actually want to play. It's kind of incredible how you can consistently keep doing that. Your reviews are great fun, but your choice of games to review is downright unparalleled among the youtube gamers I sub to.
He and Ross from AccursedFarms are great for that. If I'm ever bored, I'll look through their old videos to see if I feel like being educated on some games I've never heard of before or just a refresher on them if I have.
There's always something interesting in there.

This game sounds like what would happen if you had 3 games in development, ran out of money and needed to release something now and decided that the best thing was to take the completed parts of each game and stick them together.
But what games were You making? Techland "generic shooter game", Painkiller and had some models from Skyrim that were outsourced to Your studio?
Darn, this game really looks like it has some neat gameplay ideas. I'd love another game that plays like this!
Seriously dude I love your videos and they bring me real joy. Keep up the good work!
It's funny, the melee combat in this game from 2009 is more well developed than it was in Battlefield One even after EA made a point of talking about how important melee combat was in WW1 and how it'd play a role in the game.
Be nice to see a remake of necro vision just done right. I am very interested in the lore and setting
When a 2009 low budget WW1 zombie apocalypse game with W20K powersuits, dragons and gothic futuristic vampire guns still has more realistic and period appropriate weapons than Battlefield 1...
