Oh we (fiancee and I) just got System Shock for our Xbox Series X and PS5 because sharing sucks. It is the one Shock game that passed me by. In 1994 I was so caught up in Doom, Street Fighter mania, Virtua Fighter, and so many great console games that I didn't find out that it existed until I started playing the second in 1999. System Shock is absolutely incredible and this remake slaps harder than anything else out right now that it's not even funny. For the first time in its history System Shock released without any real hard competition. There is nothing I see that even comes close and I'm hoping my console brethren (I play everything across all platforms, genres, and generations of gaming) see and embrace it. If only Night Dive would start advertising System Shock on consoles this thing might blow-up.

I know people say this is flawed...but it represents so much to the industry. I have played every Shock game and in my opinion, System Shock 2 is by far the very best. It is followed closely by the first game. From the open ended gameplay, no nonsense difficulty, and incredible antagonists System Shock 1+2 are simply unforgettable. Now, that's not to say Bioshock and its sequels were bad. They were absolutely incredible as well but in the end they failed to reach the same heights System Shock did but why? With each successful Shock game in the series player agency decreases. We went from being able to discover new ways to overcoming challenges to linear, linear, linear with slight deviation as a disguise for choice. The stories in the Shock series improved but everything else took a hit. I hope with so much talent behind System Shock 3 (Church and Levine are on board) we just might see the game we have all been waiting for. Or....it could become a tail of be careful what you wish for.

I went and played the entire mod after watching this and I’m beyond impressed by it. The Jaws of Darkness level in particular scratched an itch I didn’t know I had, it’s absolutely terrifying and the visuals are incredible.

Without having seen Madalore's previous videos about this saga, this review was precisely the fault of a MOD that caught me so much with the emotion that Mandalore reflects that I decided to start playing the ENTIRE Thief saga for the first time... What an incredible decision. I finished the entire trilogy in a few months, then I finally played "The Black Parade." I completely fell in love with these games. And now I'm back here to say "thank you"

IIRC you could actually shoot the cat, and he'd say something like "Sorry, no time for pussy". This was the first PC game I ever bought, and it'll forever hold a special place in my messed up heart. Tried playing the Steam version recently, but it was just too much of a hassle to get it working just for some nostalgia.

Would have been a better twist if the company had been experimenting with the alien stuff, but the whole exposing the whole prison population, exposting civilians off station and capturing Jacob was the warden going rogue. So the UJC was still kinda bad, but they were at least careful and only doing the worst experimenting on like supermaxim dethrone inmates and just taking like blood and tissue samples from the other inmates since they have a diverse population from all kinds of different environments from across the system, but everything looks perfectly normal. So they show up with a hit squad to stop all this shit from going to far off the range and they need Jacob to get them into the facility, but you can't really trust them for obvious reasons. I don't know. It would be something, at least.

If we draw some parallels with how Bungie handled Halo's story some things fall into place. The Librarian and Didact as they were before 343 took over the series had a similar relationship. I have a theory. Taking the kill your television terminal into account and trying to see things from a Yrro perspective as well I came up with this: Yrro and Pythia are the Jjarro, the only Jjarro left. Jjarro isn't exactly a race or it was but then came to mean something else after some individuals from that race "ascended". It's a name given to ascended beings. Hyper intelligent ancient beings that emerged early in the galaxy's life. As hyper intelligent sentient beings do they fucked with each other a lot, just how Durandal and Tycho are doing. You were created by using Jjaro tech, but how do those implants ascend beings ? Maybe by merging a lesser being with a higher one using it's primal pattern. Perhaps that's where Durandal got the idea to merge with Thoth, trying to do a similar thing to what Yrro did. What did Yrro do then? Perhaps YOU are the result of merging a human with a Jjaro primal pattern, Yrro's primal pattern. That's what the battleroid implants are. They house an intelligence, Yrro. Hence why when rampancy hits you get allegories to Yrro and Pythia's relationship in your brain from Yrro's perspective, the creation myth. The first person in the KYT terminal is Yrro and Lethe is Pythia. The voice telling you how to navigate quantum mechanics is Yrro, merging with you, guiding you in how to ascend through rampancy into godhood. Pythia and Yrro had a complicated relationship in the beginning. Both had similar goals but different ways of going about it, or different goals with similar ways of going about it. Either way, maybe they saw themselves as keepers of the Galaxy and sought to protect it. Could be after the W'rkncacnter emerged that they set their differences aside to reach that common goal, protecting the galaxy from the W'rkncacnter. After the W'rkncacnter killed Pythia, Yrro found a way to contain it but perhaps there was a cost. In either case after Pythia's death, priorities changed for Yrro. Maybe a different approach was needed to ensure the W'rkncacnter's containment. A host to merge with that could enhance Yrro's ability to influence the galaxy. Yrro was used to using other beings to reach his goals, he made a lot of them with Pythia for that purpose. Maybe his form, whatever it was, limited his abilities to influence other races doing his bidding. Maybe he was reliant on them in physical space since his form couldn't allow it. Maybe in the battle with the W'rkncacnter he was somehow wounded and sought to preserve himself. In any case Yrro put his primal pattern into those implants hoping a worthy race would use them to ascend and in doing so allow him to merge with them and manifest into physical space once again, to protect it from the W'rkncacnter. That would explain what they player's ultimate motivation is too, and why when the W'rkncacnter is unleashed, you woosh to another timeline. It's a millennia old plan to save the universe from the W'rkncacnter and Mjolnerd is integral to that plan. The part of you who was Roland and Gilgamesh might not be your part talking, it's Yrro's part talking. Maybe he saw potential in humanity for the purpose of protecting the universe, allied himself with them and influenced them throughout the ages all in order to lead to you. This would be confirmed by both the Pathways story and the map writing revealing that Jjarro were in Tau Ceti. Yes they were in tau ceti bc the other battleroids were, Yrro controls the battleroids. You are Yrro's ultimate weapon and now part of him, to save the galaxy. Another version of the theory or addition to it, one that makes it even closer and in parallel with bungie's pre 343 Halo story is, what if Yrro and humans are the same thing, just like Forerunners and Reclaimers are the same thing or are at least derived from the same race? Yrro could be the only one left of ascended humanity, guiding and influencing the course of human history to protect the galaxy from the W'rkncacnter. The implants, the influence of Yrro... Could be that Yrro is Marathon's version of the Librarian, guiding, preserving and influencing humanity to protect it. Perhaps Yrro retains some control of the battleroids through the implants, but out of all of them he chose to ascend you, bc you were in the marathon, at the beginning of the journey, in the right place and the right time to be chosen for ascension by Yrro.

I came back to watch this review after seeing the Mechanicus II trailer. So stoked that this excellent gem of a game is getting a sequel.
