- This week I sit down with Sondre from Norway, who I met on the street this summer while interviewing locals in Oslo on the subject of Norwegian cultural stereotypes and dating. We chat about Norwegian culture and how the Norwegian mindset affects connection: making friends and dating.

Haha he is one of a kind. I am telling you - I met this man randomly on the street. He looked super scary but stopping him resulted in a conversation we couldn't stop. We just stood on the street chatting away for ages 😂
Marina, Norwegians from the south are not the same as we from Northern Norway. We are known as the Italians of the Nordic, so you should visit Tromsø.❤️

Free meal women are very common in the US. The more attractive they are, the more likely you, as a male, will just be used to pay for a meal because she is bored on whatever night it is. They have their list of guys on their phones and they sure as hell know who the pushover free meal guys are. That is why as an American guy, if I am going on a date, it is clarified up front that we are splitting the bill long before we get to wherever we are going. If there is another date after that, it will also be split. This method quickly washes away the women who are only interested in using you for your wallet, versus actually interested in spending time with you.

I was involved with a Norwegian man for some years. To this day, I can't figure him out. In all the years, he has never said happy birthday or bought me a Christmas present. his sister was quite different in that she was quite emotional.

Norwegian-American here. Sondre and his natural contrariness, gives me hope for my cousins there.
The thing is that dating did not used to be so expensive. Taking a girl out to the movies and an ice cream was a "cheap date", affordable for everybody and very enjoyable. it would be "low maintenance" as Sondre puts it. In addition, if the young man wanted to see you, he would come to your family home and he would socialize with you, some friends, and your family. Your mother would feed him and he would be invited to Christmas parties and other events. Now dating is more isolated and one on one. Now going to the movies is $60 if you share the popcorn. Who can afford that ? I went to a boring, small neighborhood pub and on the menu, the basic hamburger was $31 !!!! So for a guy to invite you out for just a hamburger and a beer is going to cost almost $100 !! I am on the side of that men need to pay for dates. It is gallant and good manners. But even I can see that expecting a guy to pay $100 - $200 every time he sees you is unsustainable.
