-In the Netherlands, every student, at school and at university, starts with a 0. 0 points. Nothing, nada, noppes. You have to do the work yourself and earn points. Not only this, but exams and projects are weighed against each other. Although a 9.5 is the same for everyone in the Netherlands, the requirements for answer quality are higher if there are many good children in a class and the teacher sees that many people have achieved a certain answer quality. A Dutch teacher, for any subject, almost never gives a 10. -In the American system, every student starts with a 10. You put in work to maintain this, and every mistake earns you negative points. Exams are assessed on central answer keys where good answers often lead to a bonus. I was often allowed to take resits, and projects received a high grade very quickly. If you averaged an 8, you were one of the worse students in the group. The difference in mentality is very large, and this is also noticeable in the international assessment and in the assessment of grades within the cultures. The Dutch always complain about the 'six culture', but this is partly because a 6 in the Netherlands is a number that indicates that you understand everything and have done enough. A 7 means you've done more work, 8 means you're really good, 9 means you're one of the best, a 10 is just incredible. In the US I didn't have to come home with an 8.5. This is also partly mentioned in the Nuffic assessment, which considers grades up to and including 7.5 as an "A" equivalence. This difference in mentality was a big difference for me.

WW2 and rationing had a lot to do with Europeans being frugal and also their habit of buying second hand stuff because they spent the war years having their homes and cities blown up by the germans and scavenging through ruins trying to find something they could salvage and use - from a frying pan to a winter coat . Europe suffered 2 world wars just 20 years apart and because of this, their supply chains were blocked. The Nazis purposely blocked the food supply to the Netherlands and Scandinavia to starve the population. The dutch almost starved to death during the war and were reduced to eating grass and tulip bulbs. The Scandinavians were luckier because their coastline allowed them to survive on fishing. During WW2 women would sleep with American soldiers just to be able to get access to a bar of soap or a bottle of shampoo. Rationing was severe and lasted well into the mid 1950's -10 years after the war ended. It is also why British food in particular is so awful. It is because food was so rationed for 15 years that the population forgot how to cook and also learned to eat food with no butter, no milk, no eggs. The German military occupied France for 4 years and in those years, they emptied all the merchandise from the stores in Paris and shipped it all back home to Germany. Everything from French cosmetics to umbrellas to coal to fresh eggs were sent back to Germany via military convoy. The Nazis left the French with nothing and with nothing to eat and the govt food rationing was so inadequate that malnutrition became a big problem in France . I also think that is why the food portions in France remain so tiny. I think that it is a left over habit from not having had food for so long -- the same as the Nazi concentration camp survivors are said to commonly always carry food in their pockets years after the war ended. Also because of the two wars, Europe was left behind from modern development. Most homes did not get indoor plumbing until the 1960's or indoor heating until the 1970's. The now senior citizen members of the Beatles give interviews and talk about how their homes in Liverpool had separate outhouses outside. I have watched old French movies from the 1960's where people took sponge baths (behind a screen) because there was no bathroom in the house.

The thing is that dating did not used to be so expensive. Taking a girl out to the movies and an ice cream was a "cheap date", affordable for everybody and very enjoyable. it would be "low maintenance" as Sondre puts it. In addition, if the young man wanted to see you, he would come to your family home and he would socialize with you, some friends, and your family. Your mother would feed him and he would be invited to Christmas parties and other events. Now dating is more isolated and one on one. Now going to the movies is $60 if you share the popcorn. Who can afford that ? I went to a boring, small neighborhood pub and on the menu, the basic hamburger was $31 !!!! So for a guy to invite you out for just a hamburger and a beer is going to cost almost $100 !! I am on the side of that men need to pay for dates. It is gallant and good manners. But even I can see that expecting a guy to pay $100 - $200 every time he sees you is unsustainable.

I am Portuguese. I have 2 sisters, a dozen nieces, and several girl cousins. Big family. Portuguese women don't play hard to get and don't need men to put on a show. They are simply more selective in general. They want to at least get to know the name of the guy they spread their legs to. They don't like lazy lovers, and are usually not into wham, bam, thank you mam. They value men who know how to make a little bit of effort. It's about quality not quantity. It's not about just sex, it's about having self worth and gageing if a guy is decent enough. Listen, I am Portuguese, but I have lived in Sweden and now I live in the USA. I had 2 swedish boyfriends and also dated Finns, Danes, and Americans. I am no prude. But I asked some of them get an STD test before we got intimate and they agreed. I don't know where they have been, and I am not about to compromise my health with a total stranger. I was with a Swede for several years and I married an American. You have to be selective and do your thing, what's right and best for you. My American husband was glad that I wasn't easy. He was pretty used to easy women and I was different. So it can work. Not everyone is the same. Countries where it's common to be promiscuous have higher rates of unwanted pregnancies and STDs. Also, people are not happier and have better relationships just because they are shagging more strangers. It's very simple: do you. Whatever works for you, and you will meet like-minded people who are going to value the same, and if not, no problem. Next. Relationships in Portugal are not more complicated. Portuguese women are friendly and fun, but maybe just not in a hurry to get laid with everyone. They also prefer Portuguese men rather than foreign men, for a variety of reasons, ask them, but foreign men are not out of the question. It depends on what you are looking for.

I'm surprised to learn that snus tobacco is popular in Norway, especially with the advent of vaping. In America, snus is generally associated with "low class" rural types. The only people I've known to use it have been baseball players. You will never see it used by highly educated urbanites. Many of their customs seem quite sensible to me, e.g. bringing your own drinks to a party so that everything is very transparent and there's no hidden sense of future obligation. It's important to consider things through the lens of the harsh climate they acclimated to over several thousands years. It is of utmost importance to be highly self-reliant. Resources are scarce and weak, dependent, overly emotional people are a liability. There is much less margin for error here than in the tropics.

I love the interest you have regarding Finnish people, I have prepared a list of the things that I think is what makes us Finnish as a Finnish man. Check it out and see if you agree or disagree! A quest for you if you will! 1. You dont talk to strangers and avoid eye contact (there is literally no point, only talk to srangers if there is a purpose behind to it, like asking for directions) 2. Finnish people are very honest, you ask how was our day and we tell you excatly how shitty our day was. :D And the older we get, the more negative the response. 3. TAKE YOUR EFFING SHOES OFF. They bring in mostly the germs (think about how much people, spit, cough, piss and shit on the streets for the love of god people) 4. We love simplicity of life, meaning our apartments are small that fit exactly to what a person needs in their life. Also to what we consume. 5. We love nature, manual labour and we love our country to extreme. Our vacation is 4 weeks at our cottages by the lake side, listening to nothing but nature and our kids playing. We also work during our vacations, but that work is liberating kind of work. Meaning woodwork, renovations, cutting grass, chopping wood, fishing etch. And we will defend this lifestyle to the very last man or woman. 6. DARKNESS. We live with it most of our lives so that means coping with it too. And that means drinking alcohol, we drink. A LOT. Or by consuming us with work like, shedding snow or stuff like that. 7. We are rude, tough and aggressive people by nature. My view is that we are closest thing you come to a real viking. Most of us has been in a fight at least once in their life. And all the men and women have scars of that in some form. 8. For some reason, we love CARS. In the mechanical way, there is not many that does not know how to fix a car. 9. Finnish music, as in finnish METAL or ROCK. Our way to express our emotions, if you are in finland during the summer, you want to be at a festival. Preferably at TUSKA festival. 10. Food, our food is still based on our winter war with Russia. It is very simplistic, but refined over the years to be delicious. It might look apalling at first, but it's good!
