No matter where you visit in the world the sound of screaming children in a supermarket is that universal constant that makes you feel right at home.
Maybe the worst sound in existance
I tell them to shut up@@whoopigoldberg9956
I never seen a store so stocked, clean, and perfectly straight in my life.
I cant understand people who says "this video super mega boring " this is not boring...its interesting.I love to watch your videos in my freetime please keep doing
I know it is interesting. I want to travel the world and get to know more about other cultures.
its great, stay awesome :))
+uchiha kurama I love this video :)
AldSotha yeah me too
I'm here because I'll be moving to china I teach English next year. These in depth videos are fascinating. I can see how a random person running into this video might be bored tho
"Medium sized supermarket". That supermarket is huge to people in New Zealand. Also, never seen a supermarket with an escalator before.
I am in Australia now, compared with most supermarkets in China, those supermarkets in AU are really small...
IKEA usually does have
Notice supermarkets in NZ have fruit and veggies as the first section when you walk through the door to give the appearance of freshness.. not in China!
Maybe an appearance of wealth?
Still makes sense though. If you're going to be selling stuff you want to put the stuff people buy less frequently in the way of the things people buy more. That way people have to constantly look at the things, which gives some of them ideas, and to others who are closer to the tipping point, a bunch of people passing by an item and maybe considering it themselves improves the attractiveness of the item.
If they stuck all the groceries and similar items on the bottom floor and all the beds on the upper floor, it'd be terrible for bed sales. Switch it around though, bed sales are probably much higher at completely negligible cost to food sales. All contingent on the idea that you can't get to the upper floor without going through a decent chunk of the bottom floor, of course.
Andrew Ashkettle If you want to buy food you have to go through the clothing staff first and at last, so it may lead you buy more staff which is not on your list
They're in 122 different cities in China, I see them everywhere in my motorcycle travels, however I think they're much more popular in the South and I don't think they go any further north of Beijing, I'll check next time I'm there as they have a big map showing all their stores on the wall
I love how Winston can make an aimless stroll through a Chinese supermarket so damn fascinating. Cheers!
Walks through enormous supermarket for 20 mins...
...walks out with a bag of chips.
half the time I do that too :P
Tristan it's a grate work out.
Watch my video of a Chinese mega supermarket! I walked out with 20 bags of weird flavoured chips lol
I love how he just walks around and talks mad shit the entire time. LOL
Yes, Mr. president, sir.
nice name, lol
lel, i know you from georg
Thats got to be a small talk marathon and they pay for this stuff on youtube.
Donald Trump Don't I know you from somewhere?
I never thought id watch a 20 minute vid of someone walking around a supermarket and actually enjoy it! :D Love your vids man ;)
At the end where you show the big hugs of "moonshine" is actually cooking wine. It's not for drinking unless you plan on getting wasted in short order (plus it really isn't that drinkable).
Hugs is hugs. Darn autocorrect. Plus no edit in CZcams app. :(
Hugs is jugs. Autocorrect again.
Wine is less than 15% alcohol. That is heavy distilled spirits
It looks like a very clean, well-stocked market! The prepared foods sections look awesome!
Do you ever see any cat meat? T hey have everything.
Do you ever see any cat meat? T hey have everything.Where is all the shopping carts?
NOBODY WILL SEE CAT MEAT IN SUPERMARKET, ONLY IN UR HOME
What do you think of China?
san jack Isn't it more common in Korea?
That would be like walking around a huge supermarket of things that I have never tried that would be so awesome.
chicken feet on the go
That supermarket looked very clean. Great selection.
I have watched almost all your youtubes and you have done a great job helping so many others to have a better understanding of our culture. There is always differences in each culture, believes, values and habits. Certainly there are always good and bad in each culture too. You have integrated very well into the society, I believe, and have made yourself an "eye" of the "foreigners" by taking your time interviewing and probing by throwing the right questions, hence giving them a clearer perspective of things. Well done and welcome to China. Keep up the beer and the good work. ha ha.
.
Thanks so much for these videos. They are helpful and they answer not only the questions I have but even other ones I hadn't thought of which are also important. Great job!
Its amazing how fully stacked the shelves are! Its like in the movies...
We have the goods person placed a special‘and The ladder
I like the double floor and stairs concept. Bus seems like a really good and convenient idea.
Very well stocked supermarket. No empty shelves. I hate seeing empty shelves.
where are you from?are there empty shelves in your country
Perplexer1 Never seen an empty shelf in my country, as Jake Li said, where do you come from?
I am encountering so much artificial scarcity in Supermarkets here in Germany. Strangely the stuff I love keeps being sold out or discontinued for the stupidest reasons.
Lol that kid at 14:40!
Well done very interesting video for us to see what China is really like. We want more.
Nothing like Chicken Feet on the go.
2 tru 4 me
LOL - Feets don't fail me now!
I got cheated.. someone clipped off the toes.
It can even walk up to you! 😂
Great Video. Absolutely Love it.
Great Job Man
+Zhao Liu thanks mate! It's an old one and I hope to make a better one soon :)
I have no idea how I came upon this in my recommended list but I am glad it showed up. Super fascinating to watch. I put it full screen and it felt as if I was walking around another world. I wish you had one for every country.
Great videos... I started watching one and then I can't stop... Great job
China's supermarket is much much better than europs'.I study in England, supermarket here is super boring for me.I've never been to US ,but I think supermarket in US should be interesting.
+jakefly8 It's only interesting if you like looking at large selections of chips, sodas, candies, cookies, cakes, and sugary cereals.
+bes loeq even whole foods or costco, the "large" selections of chips, sodas, etc do not got updated for years......
+bes loeq i am aware of that and still, costco bbq brisket is pretty good though
+jakefly8 Different culture have different taste. For example, serpentza said chinese baked bread is sugary and not savoury. I actually like the chinese baked bread and do not like the western stuff. Western bread is very boring, dry and hard. It hurts my mouth and it tastes like cardboard. But different taste and different culture.
+jakefly8 They are "boring" because they don't sell the things you want. I lived in England in the past, I loved their supermarkets because they had everything I wanted: good variaty of food, fresh juices and milk, wide selection of booze... It's sad that I can't find many of these things in China.
They have free bus ride to supper markets. Oh great, we only have free bus ride to casinos.
JK JK gambling city always is rich
And malls
Wow, this supermarket is impressively huge and it looks very clean. I have not seen one this scale in US. This episode was done almost 5 years ago! Thank you for sharing.
Just wonderful at the attention to detail on life on the other side of earth! Not all boring. I loved this !
It's amazing, you can read Chinese. Not many foreigner can do even they can speak well.
ME too!
To say it's "amazing" that a person who's lived in China for ten years (and is married to a Chinese person) can read Chinese is a *condescending* remark, even though you didn't mean it that way. Anyone who is interested can learn to read the language that surrounds them. He has probably studied Chinese in school.
That's because English in China is taught in Chinese, and in the regular schools one class has about 40 to 60 students. Also, Chinese education is all about the big, standardized tests, which do not include an oral section for English.
First of your videos I've seen--made me miss China.
One thing that stands out to me is the lack of natural light where I live all big stores have tons of skylights, so the sunshine brightens up the big warehouses and they don’t feel so grim and dim.
modern, clean and shelfs and cases all look up todate and in good shape!
Looks pretty good and free bus ride on top of that...damn!
al murphy exactly who needs a Walmart?!
Hi serpentza and other viewers.
One thing I need to point out here is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to find dog meat sold at a super market like this - This is because dog meat is not nationally considered as a normal food in China, and the food bureau will never approve and stamp it (by stamp I mean the bureau like FDA checks the product quality and stamps the document to approve the sale to market).
But of course people in China eat dog meat in one or two provinces. So if you would like to taste dog meat food, make sure you go to Guangxi Provincen. Just like I heard rattlesnakes are considered as dishes in certain area in the US, but I have never found rattlesnake meat sold in Massachusetts.
There was a Chinese shopping mall in London a few years ago (Oriental City), but it was a dirty shithole, the toilets had giant pools of piss in the middle of them constantly from leaking toilets.
I really enjoy your videos. Thank You!
One more difference is that Chinese markets have many clerks so if you don't know where to buy something you can get help easily.
Ah, it reminds me of the time I lived in China. Great experience. However I do remember the special smell you have in all this supermarkets
your videos are awesome, I love china been there twice. I wish I were there, but until then, Im grateful to enjoy it thru your eyes. Thanks
Definitely liking this store it has everything
what is it with China and loud, irritating announcements on repeat?
Welcome to city 17...
hahahah! just reminds me, time for my biennial play thru of HL2, the greatest game of all time.
Chinese people have a higher tolerance for noise, and I mean as a culture. There are many different noises that Chinese people will make and others will not frown upon, from burping and loud yawning to various cell phone noises.
it's just the culture, due to the fact that in an agricultural society you would need loud voices. Although it is a industrial society now, culture has not changed yet on this part
Advertisement, Discount information, or even broadcasting to inform some of the staff something.
the supermarket is huge !
+3dkiller This is only a normal one in China.
+Maxwell fox some are so big that you need to have enough money when you get in because if you go too deep you will have to have enough cash to eat for the many days it will take you to get out =P
I'm reading all these comments after watch this video and I think how much people have not an open mind, they just criticize everything, your videos help me a lot to understand this culture, and I love it.
When I lived in El Cerrito, CA there was a Chinese market called 99-Ranch. I loved going in there.
Cool video bro
china will better and better!
While living (my short time) in Hong Kong, I began looking into shopping some local supermarkets and was a bit surprised by what I found. This is where I first became obsessed with eating Candied Ginger....YUM and it took me awhile to find it here back in the states. I also had difficulty doing that checking yourself out thing when you were finished shopping....LOL and now it's everywhere. One of my favorite things about shopping in Asia was the variety of names; be it shops, products or even street names. The best were the greeting cards (not sure if things are the same these days) but back then, the 'themes' (and photos) of the cards or t-shirts were hilarious...and my friends in the US couldn't get enough.
That was fascinating! The supermarket was huge, WOW.
Those very-large "supermarkets" in China are usually called "Hypermarket", competition is heavy. Shanghai for example: mainly Carrefour (French), Metro AG (Germany), Walmart (US), Tesco (UK), RT-Mart (Taiwan). Interestingly you won't see this kind of global mix anywhere else. The competition is very fierce. My personal favorite is Carrefour and RT-Mart, Metro AG is also pretty good. Tesco is not doing well following its mishap in UK.
ambiva I've shopped at all three and like Metro the best.
ambiva also the lotus supermarket
Dude.Don't forget the "Suguo" grocery in Nanjing...
I was married in Nanjing. We stayed at the Parkview Dingshan hotel suite. But never made it out shopping. But the next time I go there I'll check it out.
I lived in Hefei for a couple years and really liked "Metro" shopping market. You could get Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and plenty of western food items. And great Italian Rumba coffee.
Dennis Robinson"Metro"sounds good.but there is only "Suguo"in Nanjing almost everywhere.I live in Suzhou and we have "Sam's club"Which is owned by Walmart. That's a more western grocery I guess.Never been to tho lol
_That_ is a medium-sized supermarket? It's two floors! I've never seen that. Nice video. Everything was so clean, and even with shoppers around everything looked untouched.
Maybe in SA they are way bigger?
If it's way too clean it means the place isn't doing well business wise. If a store looks like an aftermath of a tornado it means they were busy. That's what I've learned in my grocery experience.
NoJokes11B Well for many Chinese the main reason we want to go to a supermarket instead of the grocery store just downstair my apartment, is that supermarkets are bigger and cleaner.
I'm not sure if I understood you correctly. Supermarkets and grocery store is not the same thing?
NoJokes11B I'm assuming that supermarkets are some place you have to drive there.
Even though the video is so old , your commentating skills and video skills are magnificent great job! Enjoyed this little insight of a typical Chinese supermarket very much!
Love your videos! You, Prozzie and Laowhy86 are making some of the best content on CZcams ATM IMHO. Keep up the awesome work!
You didn't mention the carts on the escalator. The wheels slot into the escalator and lock in. You can go up or down stairs on the escalator with your cart. Not found in the US.
Robert Palmore We do have those in the States. They're just on the rare side.
common as fuck in switzerland too
plenty of those in canada
I live in a huge metro area in the US. I've never seen a grocery store with anything but a ground floor (in the US) in my life. A store of any kind, built in the last 20 years, that has more than the ground floor is rare, no matter how huge, and there seems to be no limit on how big they are going to build them. There is not much reason to have another floor, when you can just build the store over a larger area. There is a mall, though, that has stores on different levels that has some escalators. No grocery store there, and no stores with carts.
they have that in la. seen em at targets all over california
THAT IS VERY INCONSPICUOUS!!!, bet they see the helmet and EVERYBODY THINKS NOTHING OF IT!!!, in the other hand if you were holding a regular CAM they probably wouldn't even let in through the front......INGENUOUS....THANKS A LOT
he is talking to himself the entire time. should hold a phone to his head to make people think he is on the phone.
No sure how I ended in your channel, but I freaking love your videos after watching a few of them since yesterday
we love it when you dish
wow. seeing the amazing variety here makes me feel bad for folks who emigrate to the US. the average oriental grocery here would fit in that one back corner where they keep the livestock.
looks verand clean; reminds me of a supersized walgreen's only not filthy like most of them appear to be.
Hey thanks for the video, had a good time exploring Chinese supermarket.
awesome to see
Is this where they drive over 6 year old girls
..or is that out in the parking lot?
That supermarket looks amazing. I feel sad to live in America where everything comes in boxes and cans.
Thanks for the video!
Actually it looks no different than US ones, except US ones are similar, but sometimes bigger. At least in the North East. And no, not everything is in boxes and cans. It's very similar. If you feel sad to live in America feel free to leave! Though you'll be surprised that the markets aren't that different. Whole Foods looks better though.
***** ni hao tian zhen.
***** Fake crab is the nickname of that kind of hotpot material.
Adam Baum Of course Whole Foods is better. The stuff that cost 30 bucks in this kinda store in China would cost more than 100 dollars in whole foods. You can't compare things like that.
***** You are so cute. Fake crab, like many other food in a Chinese supermarket, is just a kind of food that is made from other cheaper ingredients but tastes like crabs, chickens, or other food. Everyone in China knows they are not real crab.
Fascinating and very interesting food.
Cheers, mate. You make living in China look easy. Very interesting tour of Ren Ren Le supermarket. Grocery shopping would be an adventure the first few times.
Something strangely endearing about foreign supermarkets. Maybe it's all those brightly coloured goods that would be completely alien in my homeland but commonplace in China. Not really my kind of place to live but I'd love to visit China one day :)
In america you would get kicked out for filming
it's ok in China ,no one cares you
what? i see people doing vlogs in america everywhere
jeffrey625625 I was warned no video shooting allowed in Mall, here in Canada
Canada is not the USA.
Come on now Maurice.
Thanks for posting these videos. I'm moving to China for a couple years this summer for work, and these videos make me feel a little less anxious about the whole ordeal. As long as there's beer...I'll be ok.
These vids are fantastic. I’m really curious about China, but will never visit. Thanks for showing at the end how you filmed too. Very interesting.
Pork floss is great though
I'm Australian, haven't been to China but after watching several of your videos it is now my number 1 next holiday destination. What an amazing country! Thank you for your detailed and fascinating insights! (And I want to try a Chinese beer!)
Hey dude this are REALLY great
I love traveling through China with you and your adorable wife when she's in.
Tyvm
Thanks for the tour. I really enjoyed it!
You would think the prices in China would be super cheap but they are the same as the west when you convert it.
There's only processed cheese? No pepperjack? No Cheddar? No Bleu? No... No... NO GOUDA? HOW CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT THE GOUDA CHEESE MAN?
Thanks for showing us REAL China. The place looks better then the supermarkets in Chicago! Would be awesome to get to shop there some time and try all the crazy stuff. Thanks for the videos, crazy how your videos went from really good to amazing in a couple years! Keep it up!!
I love the seafood setup
Awesome video! Really makes me want to visit china even more! 'm just curious though. How much would you spend for lets say a very generous weeks worth of groceries in one of these places? In American dollars if you please. By very generous I mean meats, snacks, some frozen dinners and even some of that fresh fish. One more question I've been curious about. Have your tried eel? I hear they are delicious. Always wanted to try but can't seem to get any leads on where to get any or catch any in the region of the U.S that I am from. A reply from you would make my day by the way! Thanks for the video.
plagueth2012 go to Japan for the best eel it’s called Unagi
14:40 basically the mom flattened her kid lol
Cool, was so interesting, cant thank you enough. Guess the live animal area was a huge eye opener! Yet even seeing the huge choice of rice was wonderful.
Even seeing such huge containers of seasoning tells you a whole lot about the different cooking styles. Had not realised that cheese was a no no there!
it is very colorful in the market.
For those who try not to believe, no matter how convincing your videos are, they still don't believe it. L))) Good job btw.
Go away haters~~
Pick any wildlife you want...omg i died xD
StefanSMusic god 个屁啊,自己过来中国看看!
very informative. Thank you
Thanks for sharing..
I'm studying in China..
Boet, I came across your channel and the biker one by chance 3 days ago. I've been hooked since. As a new fan I curious to know whether you have a channel with your wife like you do with the American ouen.
+vdotme not at the moment, I'll get her on more
might as well, I mean she could probably add some valuable input. Thanks for the vids!
This video is almost 4 years old and you're still replying to comments on it?!?!?! You're, you're ok Mr. Serpentza
Yeah he's really cool I also found this channel by chance a week ago or so (trough their biker videos) and I also got hooked, it's just so good, a real hidden gem here. And he even replied to this old video, this was really unexpected :)
TheSdaoud28 yeah sometimes it takes years for people to find a video and most people get a reply to a comment years later. as long as the channel is still running the owner of the channel will get the question. There's nothing wrong with asking a question at this point in time at all.
"Some other nonsense". That made me laugh
David Cairns I found the comment really rude...well, most of the comments.
He's entitled to his opinion.. You're entitled to not watch.
They have pretty cool stuff.
Those lockers look like an amazing idea!!!
tbh I really hate the cashier's nonprofessional attitude at the end. She handed the guy's card back without looking at him (of course without smiling either). She smiled at Winston and greeted him. As a Chinese this happened to me many times as well when I was in China. People in McDonald etc does not know how to smile.
John Yang ya, well they are payed too little.
John Yang I'm not chinese but I heard that it's not normal for chinese cashiers to smile, in my country norway they don't do it either.
LegendMeadow That is quite true, I have almost never seen a Chinese cashier smile.
Hi, bro, how can you smile if you got less than $5 paycheck per day and serving over 1000 times check-out?
I have never seen McDonald's workers who smiled in the states. Expecting under paid workers no matter where they are to smile is not realistic. I think not smiling while doing a job that don't pay well in a job that you don't really care to do but doing bc you need the money is being genuine. I rather deal with genuine people rather than those who gives a forced smile bc they have to.
There is a lot of staff standing around doing nothing.Sweet job lol
They are staring at the "laowai" (Westerner/White person). Also, in China, employees are paid a monthly salary rather than an hourly wage, and hours can vary.
what actually happens is parts of the supermarket is rented out to companies, like detergent companies, dairy companies, etc. so they're there to promote the company's product. btw you can actually bargain with these people...
keiran bowes because they only responsible for those goods in that small area. It is different with the one in the US.
kouryukagami no , you can't bargain at a supermarket in China.
Amazing video as always!
Great vid, thanks!!
You sounded a little bit more mean-spirited in this video. Any reason for that?
maybe it just that most guys hate shopping? he does seem very irritated.
i didnt expect them to have live fish, thats pretty cool :)
this is great love to see somewhere different from where i gre up. wish i could travel more.
cool vid. I had just came back from China and man do I miss it!
I take it you wont find cheese-based Chinese food, like you wont find mayonnaise in Mexico. They don't like.
mayonnaise? slav power?
Omg that stuff is almost as expensive as in Austria, I thought China was cheap oO
Serjo777 They are in RMB 6.125 rmb to 1 dollar. And the meat and veggies are measured by the Kilo not the pound. I thought it was very cheap to live in China.
Dennis Robinson In my opinion it's suuuuuuper cheap looking at this video, the chinese currency is almost the same as norwegian so I don't need to use anything to calculate the value, but in norway everything is very expensive, I was surprised when he said it was like 1 RMB for a 6-pack of Pepsi. That would cost like 60-80x more here in Norway.
I dont' know what you're talking about, the rmb is 6.2 to the dollar. That makes 1rmb about 16 cents. Whereas the NOK is 7.41 to the dollar. But dont' you use Euro's in Norway? You aren't even going to buy one coke for 1 rmb, someone is storying to you. You can take some buses in some towns but many are 2 rmb per ride. A Bud or PBR beer is about a buck each.
Marlboros are I think about 16 rmb a pack. A typical quarter pounder, fries and a coke at McDonalds is about 30 rmb.
But I never saw a Pepsi there. a Hersey bar is about 8 rmb. Veggies and many other food items are cheap but foreign foods are not. If you want a bag of Sunmaid Raisins you'll pay about 40 rmb for one of those square plastic containers. But if you want it you pay for it. Coffee is very expensive. Starbucks it's the same there as here and they're everywhere.
Dennis Robinson Shit, sorry, I meant 10 not 1 on the 6 pack
Dennis Robinson Btw, Norway is not even a part of the EU. You should know that before commenting.
Really similar to a Carrefour I usually went to in Iraq.
Infact the escalator area was the EXACT same, complete with items on the slots and the wheel lock thing, amazing! (also had the same sort of position and entrance/exit)
Great vid. Id been thinking of asking for a supermarket vid!
