      Notice supermarkets in NZ have fruit and veggies as the first section when you walk through the door to give the appearance of freshness.. not in China!

    • @KorezaanSu
      @KorezaanSu Před 7 lety +4

      Maybe an appearance of wealth?
      Still makes sense though. If you're going to be selling stuff you want to put the stuff people buy less frequently in the way of the things people buy more. That way people have to constantly look at the things, which gives some of them ideas, and to others who are closer to the tipping point, a bunch of people passing by an item and maybe considering it themselves improves the attractiveness of the item.
      If they stuck all the groceries and similar items on the bottom floor and all the beds on the upper floor, it'd be terrible for bed sales. Switch it around though, bed sales are probably much higher at completely negligible cost to food sales. All contingent on the idea that you can't get to the upper floor without going through a decent chunk of the bottom floor, of course.

    I have watched almost all your youtubes and you have done a great job helping so many others to have a better understanding of our culture. There is always differences in each culture, believes, values and habits. Certainly there are always good and bad in each culture too. You have integrated very well into the society, I believe, and have made yourself an "eye" of the "foreigners" by taking your time interviewing and probing by throwing the right questions, hence giving them a clearer perspective of things. Well done and welcome to China. Keep up the beer and the good work. ha ha.

    Hi serpentza and other viewers.
    One thing I need to point out here is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to find dog meat sold at a super market like this - This is because dog meat is not nationally considered as a normal food in China, and the food bureau will never approve and stamp it (by stamp I mean the bureau like FDA checks the product quality and stamps the document to approve the sale to market).
    But of course people in China eat dog meat in one or two provinces. So if you would like to taste dog meat food, make sure you go to Guangxi Provincen. Just like I heard rattlesnakes are considered as dishes in certain area in the US, but I have never found rattlesnake meat sold in Massachusetts.

This is where I first became obsessed with eating Candied Ginger....YUM and it took me awhile to find it here back in the states. I also had difficulty doing that checking yourself out thing when you were finished shopping....LOL and now it's everywhere. One of my favorite things about shopping in Asia was the variety of names; be it shops, products or even street names. The best were the greeting cards (not sure if things are the same these days) but back then, the 'themes' (and photos) of the cards or t-shirts were hilarious...and my friends in the US couldn't get enough.

    Those very-large "supermarkets" in China are usually called "Hypermarket", competition is heavy. Shanghai for example: mainly Carrefour (French), Metro AG (Germany), Walmart (US), Tesco (UK), RT-Mart (Taiwan). Interestingly you won't see this kind of global mix anywhere else. The competition is very fierce. My personal favorite is Carrefour and RT-Mart, Metro AG is also pretty good. Tesco is not doing well following its mishap in UK.

      I live in a huge metro area in the US. I've never seen a grocery store with anything but a ground floor (in the US) in my life. A store of any kind, built in the last 20 years, that has more than the ground floor is rare, no matter how huge, and there seems to be no limit on how big they are going to build them. There is not much reason to have another floor, when you can just build the store over a larger area. There is a mall, though, that has stores on different levels that has some escalators. No grocery store there, and no stores with carts.

      Actually it looks no different than US ones, except US ones are similar, but sometimes bigger. At least in the North East. And no, not everything is in boxes and cans. It's very similar. If you feel sad to live in America feel free to leave! Though you'll be surprised that the markets aren't that different. Whole Foods looks better though.

She smiled at Winston and greeted him. As a Chinese this happened to me many times as well when I was in China. People in McDonald etc does not know how to smile.

      I have never seen McDonald's workers who smiled in the states. Expecting under paid workers no matter where they are to smile is not realistic. I think not smiling while doing a job that don't pay well in a job that you don't really care to do but doing bc you need the money is being genuine. I rather deal with genuine people rather than those who gives a forced smile bc they have to.

    • @Andreas4696
      @Andreas4696 Před 9 lety

      Dennis Robinson In my opinion it's suuuuuuper cheap looking at this video, the chinese currency is almost the same as norwegian so I don't need to use anything to calculate the value, but in norway everything is very expensive, I was surprised when he said it was like 1 RMB for a 6-pack of Pepsi. That would cost like 60-80x more here in Norway.

    • @dennisrobinson1290
      @dennisrobinson1290 Před 9 lety

      I dont' know what you're talking about, the rmb is 6.2 to the dollar. That makes 1rmb about 16 cents. Whereas the NOK is 7.41 to the dollar. But dont' you use Euro's in Norway? You aren't even going to buy one coke for 1 rmb, someone is storying to you. You can take some buses in some towns but many are 2 rmb per ride. A Bud or PBR beer is about a buck each.
      Marlboros are I think about 16 rmb a pack. A typical quarter pounder, fries and a coke at McDonalds is about 30 rmb.
      But I never saw a Pepsi there. a Hersey bar is about 8 rmb. Veggies and many other food items are cheap but foreign foods are not. If you want a bag of Sunmaid Raisins you'll pay about 40 rmb for one of those square plastic containers. But if you want it you pay for it. Coffee is very expensive. Starbucks it's the same there as here and they're everywhere.
