- I love China, but scammers can very easily ruin your impression, trip, and overall experience in China. I would like to make this video to help you avoid falling into the traps of getting scammed as a foreigner in China. Beijing is host to many types of scams, so watch and learn how to avoid these scams!
My recent trip to Beijing saw me exposed to most of the common scams Beijing has to offer...

I have just survived my second visit to China and avoided scamming, thanks to videos like this. I travelled on my own, so a single, foreign male visitor attracts quite a lot of unwanted attention. Thanks for a very useful video.

Fantastic
That is true, even if a little embarrassed, but I have to admit it as a Chinese. I and every normal Chinese hate those scams, too. what a shame!
As a british person to me i assume that anyone in the world has potential to scam so my mantra is NO NOT INTERESTED It has worked very well .

I just got back from China and someone tried the art gallery scam on me in Guilin. Thanks to you , I was prepared. Thank you.
+elrobinson82 glad to hear it!
serpentza oddly, I fell for the art gallery scam on my first of many trips to Beijing, when I was off by myself, but I wasn't terribly ripped off. I purchased one piece that the young lady painted for me while I watched, and received a gift, too. Less than ten dollars US, which was worth it, BUT I saw several other tourists being led around in the same gallery and they were being asked for thousands of renminbi for what were clearly cheap paintings. I don't know why I wasn't pressured for more money. Maybe my "student" was new at the scam.
The same thing happened to me too as well, the "art student" offered a painting to me for 100 RMB, but I told her I never bring much money with me and only had 70 RMB, and she accepted that offer.
+Robert Daniel Curtis - It was worth 10, so way to go. You showed her.
maybe that student was just nice/isnt greedy and didnt really wanted to scam you, besides, 10 usd can feed that guy for a week or more
"You don't get Chinese people to just speak such good English randomly approaching you on the street, it normally doesn't happen.". Now I get it...
I'm a foreigner with Chinese face who don't speak a single word of Mandarin, my first week in Shanghai was horrible. I was lost in the downtown and looking for direction. Since I can't speak Mandarin, I tried to approach some foreigners who I presume work in Shanghai and should know some general direction ( judging from the way they dressed up for office job ). 3 times with 3 different foreigner, the moment I said "Excuse me... " they replied me with "Bu yao" and walk away, which later on I learn that it means no. So no wonder I was treated that way, maybe they thought I'm one of the scammers...
bebekloncat Lol! Oh sh*t!😂😂😂 That sucks dude!

I was scammed inside the forbidden city. The guide took us to a gallery in a small hut where Emperor PU's nephew was selling some art work on a scroll. Since this was inside the forbidden city, I did not doubt or felt any suspicion since they may have been backed by the government or atleast authenticated. It was a great set up - a lady in her 30s who spoke english, an old man in his 60s who was the nephew. Felt honoured to shake hands with him. Realised it later that it was all a scam cause there were different pics of the nephew on the internet. What really hurt me was the guide who took me there. I had given her food, water and extra tip, she stood there all that time knowing we were getting scammed. However, it was a lesson learned. GBP 50 spent on the scroll, still in hanging in my living room as a reminder of how I got duped in China. I had a great time overall and loved the people in China.
I was there last decade and saw an "art exhibition" in the Forbidden City, which was actually a shop, not an exhibition, and they were selling multiple copies of the same painting. I asked them why there were multiples and they said there was a contest among art students to copy well known paintings and these were the results. I could tell it was a scam so we didn't buy any, but, like you, I had thought that they had some sort of authenticity because of the location.
HRS sorry about your story.
They weren’t loving at all apparently
The tourist lady might've gotten a share of the profit for bringing her customers to the shop
I feel like you guys deserve to get scam, if you honestly think a country is going to sell their national treasures to some random tourists. Lol

I had a guy attempt "the rickshaw scam" when I was in Tangier. he had a cab, not a rickshaw, but offered a tour around the city for 5 Euro. we thought it sounded like a great deal! the tour wasn't bad, but very brief and then culminated with him bringing us to a rug shop so we could buy an authentic Moroccan rug. when it became clear we weren't going to buy a rug, the guy turned very hostile and, upon dropping us back off at the port, claimed he had said 50 Euro. in hindsight, I'm glad I was with my girlfriend because she insisted we just pay him and eat our losses. looking back, I'm glad her cooler head prevailed because who knows how bad it could have gone... a kind of funny footnote to the story is, when we got back on the ferry to Algeciras, there were quite a few people toting large rolled-up rugs with them.
Imagining many ppl sitting holding rugs 😅
you couldve just give him 10 or 20 euros and said that was good enough ?
In Morocco a taxi must use a taximeter otherwise you can ask him to take you to the nearest police station, that will make him think twice.
Tourists complaints aren't taken lightly by local police.
to be fair, I had both the Rickshaw and Expensive drink scam attempted in central London too.

I was from the southwest of China. When I came to Beijing, I was scammed for several times.
At the gate of PKU, a woman holding a baby told me in a very strange accent that the child was hungary. I was too simple-minded at that time and I bought her a sausage .Then she said they need money for the ticket and asked me to go down into the tubestation with her.
That's when I found it weird and I just ran away.
I told my family my experience and they were scared. We couldn't imagine how things would be if I agreed. How many people were there in the tubestation waiting for me? And what did they want from me?
The population is just too enormous in cities like Beijing. You can meet all kinds of people. So just be careful and don't talk with strangers without caution.
Scarlett Tsui Best not to travel alone. If you do, do not engage strangers in conversation or let them know you are alone.
Be aware of your surroundings, yourvhead up and shoulders back.
Don't look like a victim. Be safe.
HAHA HOLY SHIT. That's a hilarious story. "I bought a baby a sausage and then ran off." That sounds scary O.O lol

You are one of the very few people that actually gave a pinpoint account of how China actually is, most people just glorify China so my expectation was so very different to the experiences I had. Was charged 330 yen for two bottles of beer which usually cost 12 yen in total. Great videos!!
Not yen, but yuan. They are totally 2 different currency.
I wish I knew about this scam before I went to Beijing in February this year... I got scammed by the exact same lady you showed in the footage. I learned my lesson not to trust a Chinese stranger who speaks fluent English. Thank you for making this video and informing people to watch out for these scams!

How to avoid scammer anywhere in the world, old technic : don't dress like a tourist. Even if ones dare coming, I talk giberish as i walk away and they don't follow.
Same with buying stuff in store. Check tag quickly and say a ridiculous low price. just numbers no other words. Act upset and they'll accept the third offer.
How can i not dress as a tourist
That helps but when you’re walking by the most known tourist attraction it’s hard to avoid detection regardless of how you dress.
Haha very difficult to don't look like a tourist in China unless you're Chinese haha
Check Market price, when they give ridiculously price u just try to bargain. Actually this thing happen in most ASIA country xD
Lol... as a non-Asian person you will ALWAYS be seen and treated as a tourist even if you were born in China and would speak fluent Chinese. In racist countries, it’s all about race... nothing else lol.
Found this video too late. Learned the hard way. Was scammed for 200$ on tiananmen square by Chinese people who wanted to practice English. We went to a local karaoke bar for a coffee. They order a few bottles of wine and the end price was 5000rmb. We were 4, me, two Chinese girls and a guy, and they tried to split bill in 2, but after some arguing I paid one forth, but still lost 200$. I hope people watch this video before visiting China. Safe trip.
Sorry to yea that mate, yeah I hope people can learn from this video
Thanks, I love your videos. Back in 2011, I was visiting my girlfriend in Beijing. Looking back at that trip, I think I was targeted for a scam three different times. First, as in your vid, the rickshaw guy. He took us around the lake and then down an alley. He wanted us to go to see his friend for some 'traditional tea'. I mean shit, a tea house that looked like a car garage at the end of the alley? We didn't go in and he took us back. Second, staying in the Raffles Hotel for a weekend I was down in the lounge drinking a beer, alone. This is actually pretty funny. I was about to leave and retire to our room. A very attractive woman, perhaps 35 years old or so, asked if she could sit down near me. I said, "Sure, I was just leaving". Damn, did she get pissed. She said something in Mandarin and I didn't think much about it until later. A good laugh though. Third, I was visiting a Temple around the Olympic stadium area. I was on my way out and a nice young girl approached me and asked if I was American. I said yes and she wanted to talk, ' to practice her English '. I told her I was due back at home when my girlfriend gets back from work. She seemed very polite and genuine. So, I'm not sure if she was a scammer or not. I ran around Beijing alone for three weeks as my girlfriend was at work and I never felt I was being scammed. Maybe, I just got lucky. None the less, great info and thank you for sharing. I look forward to more of your videos. Cheers.
A bit old but that’s a typical scam , the “split bill” is usually not any splitting at all except your portion.
Hi Dinu, I am Chinese, and I feel sorry about what you went through when you were visiting Beijing, the scammers in Beijing does not surprise me, because I know they are exist, you know why they always target the foreigners? because most of them believe the foreigners are the rich people, and they have a lot of money, besides, the foreigners do not speak Chinese, and usually they think it is very easy for them to scam you. But if your face looks like Asian, the scammers will assume you are the Chinese, and in this way, you will never be scammed, this is very interesting, and since most of the western social media are blocked in China, the scammers always think the white guys are rich, because all the foreigners they saw is on tv, the politicians, the movie stars and from the holleywood movies, they don't have the chance to know there are avarage people in the foreign countries, youtube, google, wikepedia, facebook, twitter, instagram, all blocked, most people in China know very little about the world outside of China.
I'm sorry for your experience. I hate scammers too!
LOL the body blocking to keep you in the shop was awesome lol

Man, this reminds me how I was scammed in Shanghai. I totally fell for the tea ceremony scam, but then i realized midway was happening due to Serpenzas videos so I stopped the "ceremony" early and lost less money.
High prices at tourist locations is pretty standard
Max Petersson it's a no brainier. It exists in every country
not like this ....
Twice as high is standard. 1000% overpriced is a scam.
It's kind of like a gift shop
Max Petersson so paying $500 for a $15 dollar helmet is normal? Hmm. K then
The thing these scammers exploit the most is that most people will go to great lengths to avoid being rude or hurting someone's feelings. The good scammers will get you into a situation where you have to choose between giving them money or appearing rude. They won't leave you any alternatives.
I want to scam those scammers.
One of my indicators is take out your camera and start filming. If they refuse to be on camera, then it’s probably a scam lol learned the hard way when I went to China
I've lived in Beijing for many years and the "daylight robbery" scam is just part of the shopping experience at places like Hong Qiao, Silk Street, etc. With experience and knowing how to bargain, you can actually get great deals in those places. It's really not a scam in the end, just a lame sales tactic that fails when you bargain.
+ScorchRC062 Also people taking photos with you may or may not be trying to get evidence of having a "friend" so that they can get an American/foreign visa to travel (having a reason to go - e.g. I'm visiting a friend). But only sometimes.
It is a scam, if you accept the price thats higher that they are stating then its absolutely a scam lol

I was shocked when a chinese middle age woman approached us like in the video because I was like she speaks english really well which is a nice qualification among chinese people, why would you have to scam people with that?
Scaming is their job. It indicates they always scam foreigners everyday. So she can speak English well.
It's funny hearing this because, after living in Kyoto for 5 years, the rickshaw drivers there are all legit.
I'm 15 and have lived in Beijing for more than 12 years, I speak, read and write Chinese fluently, but I'm now living in Canada. In the 12 years I have rarely been approached by scammers. I was just back for the summer and the thing is in Beijing, u have to be aggressive to ppl, if ur nice ur fucked. There main target are foreigners, u have to be aggressive and talk the price down to what it should actually be instead of over paying.
Kevin Gervais You're precisely right. I lived there quite a bit and there are unwritten rules in those places and you need to be knowledgeable about how things actually work or atleast show off and raise your voice to get their respect. I know that sounds ridiculous but it's a part of their culture and mental

Are foreigners really so rare in China that Chinese citizens will walk up to random foreigners just to have a picture with a foreigner in it?
Operation Valkyrie Yes! When I was there it would happen every day. And everyone was very nice. On the island of Java in Indonesia it was the same but with more holding of babies.
Yes, all the time. Particularly school girls it seems. Went there on a school trip years almost ten years ago. I have never been in a place where I was so noticeable because of my ethnicity.
It was mostly kind of flattering haha I know they probably just wanted a picture with the very light skinned 'big nose', no real harm.
Operation Valkyrie happened to my teenage blond friend lol. People would try to get her away from the rest of her family to take pics with her.
It depends where in China.
root yes! In many places. I go to China twice a year, different locations, and people frequently ask me to be in their selfies. All the time. At first I thought it odd but I quickly grew accustomed to it. I am not freakish looking. I think I'm not freakish looking.
Thankfully I wasn't scammed too badly...all I got was angry looks (mostly) and several times angrily insulted (in Mandarin) by several old ladies in different cities. I like your information on Xian, had a similar experience with regards to the Art Gallery and the old farmer scam. Xian was actually one of the worst cities I've been to with regards to scammers. Had a guide and she was pretty bad, feeding me false information...luckily I did my reading.
Chinese natives took pictures or filmed me without asking my permission, usually from a distance but, as you said, no attempt of conversation. This wasn't restricted to tourist sites and open spaces but also restaurants, on the plane, on the train etc... More irritating than threatening but, again, wouldn't say it ruined my day.
The concept of a person of Indian origin being born somewhere other than India was extremely Alien to them. Most being genuinely surprised but well mannered, whilst others flat out calling me a liar and asking where in India I learnt English...having spoken to many locals (in my very poor Mandarin) throughout China, most of those that did speak to me (who had never left China) were under the illusion that everyone born in England/Europe/"The West" is white. Fortunately, not everyone I spoke to was so ignorant...but this change will take time.
In general, Chinese People from China no absolutely nothing about what is going on beyond their border. It’s actually really funny. Like talking with little children. But also annoying
Truth be told, Id love to see a Fake vs Real (situation and Item) video just like this. Very well done and informative.
We need more people like this guy in this world , would be a better place ...
I agree, Winston is a truly awesome human being and I am also grateful for people like him in the world. I find myself millimeters from getting arrested all the time in China because of my poor ability to manage my quick temper when I feel that a situation is "just morally wrong" (not really arrested, but my Chinese wife insists that is what will happen or 10 evil uncles will follow me home and beat me up.. lol...). China is not a place for people who value morality and kindness, it is an insidious place where greed, schemes, corruption, and all manners of general thuggery are thriving and publicly applauded as clever (they call it being "cong ming"). The highest elite levels of the party are promoting good social values in the propoganda, but it sure seems like 95% of the party underneath them must actually be doing the opposite with smiling faces, because virtuous morality is nowhere to be found on the streets of China..... really nowhere. Do not expect anyone to ever be truthful with you, their general feeling is that only a stupid person would be honest if they could instead lie about something for their advantage, especially if it financially advantageous.
Just wanted to say thanks for your scam vids, had people try Art Gallery and Coffee Shop within 5 mins of leaving the hotel.

I got scammed with the tea house scam! Wish I had watched this before !
Share your story, it will help others
That also happened to my dad this summer when he went to do bussines stuff
I somehow missed the request to share. Will do so now. Two young girls approached me and started making conversation and being so interested in chatting to me. Said they would love to practise their English and let's go to a tea shop nearby. I had time on my hands, so I thought why not. At the tea shop, I saw the exorbitant prices of the tea, and decided to just order a cheap coke instead. They ordered a pot of tea each. They kept insisting I try the tea. I took a little at their insistence just to taste. When the bill came, to £90 at the time, they said we had to split the bill three ways. I said to them I only ordered a coke, which I think was the equivalent to £3 at the time. They said that I had from their teas so had to pay my share. Not wanting to cause a scene, I just paid it and left.

Funny thing is, I watched this before going to China and the exact opposite happened. I was waiting for people to scam me but it didn't really happen, except for those overpriced markets which I already knew before, so that wasn't a real issue. Actually, a university student approached us at McDonald's and started talking to us in really good English! I was surprised and was just waiting for a scam of some sort to happen but it never really did. We just had a really nice conversation and he couldn't believe I wasn't studying like crazy to get into a nice university. I just told him it doesn't work that way in my country and you can basically just apply for any uni you want to go to (with a few exceptions of course) and he was just so overwhelmed. One of my favorite conversations during my travels, what a nice guy!
Great video, great information! Thank you for this, it was very useful.
People need to be careful in their home country as well as abroad. I was led down a path by a fellow Jamaican when I went as a tourist in Jamaica. I quickly turned around because it didn't feel right and I didn't know who was waiting for me around the corner. Very good advice you guys gave. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Wow!
I lived in Beijing for 6 years and this is an excellent video - I can really relate. Virtually all the scammers around Tiananmen Square claimed to be art students from Xi'an. Possibly because they think Westerners have heard of Xi'an and therefore gives them more credibility? Who knows? But don't let this put you off the regular Chinese who are good people.

This happens to non-foreigners as well. The attitude towards "scamming" isn't the same as in western countries, its almost like reverse bargaining, and is seen as clever and tricky and not suggesting a ridiculously high price is seen as missing out on an opportunity. These people are desperate to make money, its really bad but its the reality of life in china
+Tracy Zhang Hey, you are cute. Will you Marry me?
+Marky Polo is this a scam?
+SKazclaw No. It's for real.
+Tracy Zhang I admit when I moved to Beijing, I never considered the desperation that people in the city feel. They see the skyscrapers, modern appliances, bullet trains and can't relate. It is not just the reality of life in China, but reality of life in every developing country.
+Tony Perkins Very good point. Its the struggle to adapt from a time period when it was a feat to not starve for a day and feed your family. Nowadays, this instinct to simply "survive" is not something just unique to China, but any country that is emerging from poverty.
5:51 "fairly ugly middle aged women here" oooooooh, you're gonna need all the water in the yangtze for that burn!

aaron porto He is but whats in this video is not fake. As the Chinese maybr we gotta look for some changes cuz me and my family have been victims to these stupid little scams too when we travelled
@Chloe Moon why racist. Pointing out bad behaviour isn't racist.
You are amazing. I've been fantasizing about moving abroad for years, and you encourage that fantasy. Thank you.
Good job guys, really appreciate your work!
interesting, of course silk street is a huge scam, i usually tell them i live in beijing and they back off on the crazy prices =) never had issues with local trying to scam me with tea houses at least, remember the local "artists" in wanfujing trying to get your money, gladly i knew before hand that they were scamming. It's great that you are posting these videos, they are very informative and every traveler not used to china should see them :)
+Eivind Fjeld Schjerven exactly correct. I lived in Beijing for 4 years, even had a flat near the Silk Market. As soon as I said I lived down the street, they shut up and walked away.
Hi, this is a reporter from Global Times based in Beijing. Global Times is doing a cover story about how to avoid telecommunications fraude in China. I saw your video on CZcams talk about scams in China. Have you been through such experiences before? Or any of your friends? Would you like to share the story with me (the report can pseudonym)? Thank you!
0:17 so are we just going to ignore the guy with his belly hanging out?

IKR!!!! he is like the fattest guy in china and we are ignoring him!! (sorry for comenting a year later)

very informative! thanks!
I wish I had seen this video before I visited Beijing for the first time. Luckily I didn't bite at most of the scams, but the scariest one was when we were trying to go to the old part of the Great Wall. Those fucking gray vans, man. You'll know what I mean if you've been in China for an extended period of time. They almost pulled us off the public bus we were on to "TAKE YOU TO GREAT WALL FOR CHEAP PRICE."
Tx,good coverage 😮❤
The old silk street was lots of fun. Not as fancy as this new building and much smaller. But it had a certain charm. Thanks for the video. Excellent as usual.
I didn't think there would be that many scams in China. I lived in Japan for 5 years and I don't remember anyone trying to scam me. I guess that means something. But I thought the Chinese government would be really strict on this stuff.
I like how you still spelled *because* wrong even though your comment is edited. I guess that's what you can expect from a racist lowlife.
thats japan. they have high cultural integrity. they don't allow mass immigration into their country for a reason.
panner11, I like how you can not differentiate between spelling mistake, and a typing mistake. I guess that's what you can expect from an SJW lowlife.

I was charged €800 for six beers in Beijing.
Queenstown here is 15 bucks for a beer. Cheaper to go to Monaco for a beer n food vacation than here at home.
@ Donald Sayers did that include the young ladies?
Very informative and much-appreciated videos, you are awesome
good stuff, serpentza.
When I went to Beijing and Shanghai back in 2008, I researched and read about the scams before going, and quickly recognized when people would come up and talk to us in English at length. There were some honest Chinese who really wanted to practice their English with a foreigner, but most were trying the tea scam, art scam, etc.
We did not know about the rickshaw scam... and here's how it went down. We hailed a cab from our hotel near Tiananmen and wanted to go to the Pearl Market. The cab driver - we found out later - was in cahoots with a rickshaw. He stopped the cab just outside the hotel and said we would enjoy a rickshaw ride. I asked the rickshaw three times about the price, and made sure I repeated the 30 rmb him before we got in. He wanted to add on to the ride to show us the "old areas" but we said no and insisted we get to the Pearl Market. He stopped short of the Pearl Market and then said, as you mentioned, it was 300 rmb, not 30. I laughed at him and offered the 30 rmb. He was getting more angered, but then I looked and started to hail a police officer, at which point he said "OK, OK", sneered at us, and pedaled off.
I was there last year bought couple watches, as soon as I got back home none worked
Shortly after watching this video I went to London and a couple of pretty girls approached me and my friend and they wanted to invite us to a pub. They were English speaking and really friendly. Following your advice I told them - Ha! nice try. What do you take us for?!...and we went on our way, unscammed.
Thanks for a great video.
Chengyuan Xu well apart from the stealing the credit card thing. That’s not scamming lol. That’s the business model of those clubs. Those are called host clubs. They exist all around the world. The girls get paid depending on how much drinks they make the customer buy. It’s a Legitimate business model. And if you’re not stup1d, you know that before entering a host club. Lol
You really went to a host club without understanding that girls work there whose job it is to talk and entertain customers when they come in? Come on...
@@swlk9996 I think you just missed the joke lol
Luckily I was prepared with the help of videos like this, so while I was in Shanghai I didn't lose any money/time on scams. Did have several people approach me, but I kept walking since I already had things to do. Also I was very careful about which taxis I took around Shanghai.
Love your videos. Please share more about the scams prevalent in China these days so that all of us will be wiser when travel.
In Mongolia, there are only bunch of Mongolians who want to practice their English, they even might offer you a free tour around the city just to have little more in person time with Foreigner.
Mongolia is a beautiful country, that's why they hate the Chinese the most. Sacred people can never stand with the fraud.
I wonder how many people actually fall for the tea house scam.
It's just for me personally I wouldn't follow some random stranger to anywhere regardless of if it's China, U.S.A or even in my own country (UK).
+DawnMoon
Even if they offered you free candy?
+DawnMoon quite a few sadly.
+DawnMoon ikr. Its really common sense. You dont follow strangers into random places even in your own country, but for some reason thousands do when they go to a completely foreign land they know literally nothing about.
IMO if you are stupid enough to fall for a scam like this - you deserve to be scammed.
+DawnMoon
It's such an easy scam because tourists come to sight see and don't want to be rude to natives. In your home country, you typically have a reason to be somewhere....work, shopping, etc.....but tourism is basically like having nothing to do....wandering around, sight seeing, etc. That means the person is more open to doing things, like go into a local cafe to try it out. That's why those scams work soo well. Some guys even think the women are attracted to foreigners, and think they could make a new friend or even get lucky, or just like having the company of a pretty face. And people in general, have a hard time saying no to someone who seems friendly or nice.
If I didn't have a drug addict sister that taught me to say no by constantly asking me for money all the time, I'd probably have a harder time saying no to people too. Basically, saying 'no' is generally a learned practice, either through experience or the advice of others.
My friends and I followed some on purpose. I was pretty prudent and the only "surprise" was 50rmb of snacks that were originally "free" though the beers were also 10rmb per bottle more expensive than what other bars would charge.
I remember we got scammed for around $100 for a taxi ride in Shanghai, when the driver “forgot” to turn on the meter
Hey there, great tips on these scams. You covered all most all of it, great video. I am an expat in Shanghai and sharing my life here and around Asia through my channel. Absolutely, fake market scams are all over here too. Thanks for putting this out.
Very informative. Thanks much!
Strangely I think Taiwan differs from China in many ways.
Yeah, they scam in a different way-making phone calls, lol
dude, China = 264 Tainwans when compare with their size. That would be the reason Taiwan differs from China in many way.
of course.TAIWAN is much better than CHINA.

Phil B hehe they made my family bankrupt though phone just because mainland Chinese police can't catch them. It happens to many Chinese family, they are much worse.
