    I've been doing this since I first started music. It just seemed like an intuitive approach, especially for my own music. Great explanation! At this stage, I listen very critically for collisions and sonic imperfections. This way, as I said, seems so intuitive...but as you insinuated, it's not a definitive way.

    Nice to see your take on this topic since I was one of those people requesting a video about this. Few questions, thou. I've seen more scenarios another way around where you have all the vocals as one stereo track and the beat as multiple tracks; kick, other drums, bass, melodic instruments, etc. What would be your preference for how many and what steams would you ideally export from the beat? Also, did you already do a video about exporting stems for mastering at some point, or would you do one in the future?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Před 3 lety +2

      It depends on the track but I prefer to have the kick, snare, bass and melodic tracks separate for the beat if possible. I posted an exporting tutorial (approach is essentially the same for stems) czcams.com/video/Scq4rsMfbwA/video.html

  • @lavenderllamamusic
    @lavenderllamamusic Před 2 lety +3

    I know that when you're ready to export a single-mixed WAV file to be mastered, you would typically drop the master volume on that project to -6db, before exporting it. To allow a good amount of headroom when mastering.
    So using this stem approach, would you also export each individual stem with -6db on the master volume of the project? Or would you just export each stem with the master volume left to a flat 0db and adjust accordingly during the mastering process?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Před 2 lety +2

      The best option there is to use a VCA fader. That will maintain all your send / aux relationships and drop all channels the same amount. czcams.com/video/D3LhWEFiICI/video.html

    Ok so on one of my vocal mixes . When I use words like “honestly “. The ON part is louder then it needs to be is that part of the mids ? And then do I need to add more compression if I do the stem mastering

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Před 3 lety

      Sounds like a compression issue to me… try a faster attack time / higher ratio to smooth it out. You might also want to try some multiband compression to dial in certain frequencies.

    I only have a vague idea of how to master and I am quite sure that i don't have a sensitive enough ear to be a mastering engineer. It seems by common sense that having stems for the song is a definite bonus for certain scenarios and necessary for some. I guess that a mix engineer who is quite satisfied with his mix and has no particular problem would not want to send stems for mastering for fear of changes being done that are too directed at tracks that could change the feel of the song too drastically after the client has shown excitement and is satisfied. Is that basically the idea?

    Hey Sean,I want to buy an audio interface but I can’t decide between either the UAD solo or the focusrite 2i2 , what would be the best in your professional opinion? Cuz based off what I’ve read some say you can’t really tell the difference in quality but some say there’s a drastic difference

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Před 3 lety +1
