  • Want to be with Frank? Here's all you need to create your own papier mâché head.
    You will need:
    An inflatable gym ball
    Cling film
    For the papier mache: glue, water, newspaper
    Cardboard
    Paint
    Scissors
    Masking tape
    Craft knife
    A marker pen
    Step 1: Inflate the gym ball and cover with cling film.
    Step 2: Starting at the bung, draw a line around the centre of the ball.
    Step 3: Mix the glue and water together to make a paste, and use it to apply newspaper strips over the cling film. You'll need about four layers. Leave to dry overnight.
    Step 4: Cut the cling film and any paper along the centre line then deflate the ball and remove it.
    Step 5: To make Frank's head oval shape, re-inflate the ball, and cling film all the way round the centre.
    Step 6: Attach the two sides again with tape and papier mâché over the gap. Make sure to leave a space for you head to go in. Once dried, remove the ball.
    Step 7: Draw and cut the face shapes from cardboard. You need eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth. If you cut the nose and ears over a seam in the cardboard, it's easier to bend later.
    Step 8: Stick the face shapes on the head with tape, and cover with papier mâché.
    Step 9: Fill the cardboard ears with newspaper and papier maché over then cut slits in the side of the head to attach
    Step 10: Construct the hair from newspaper, and papier mâché over.
    Step 11: Paint on the skin and hair.
    Step 12: To create the eyes, first cut a stencil from paper. Draw round the stencil to give yourself a guide, and then cut through the head to create eye-holes.
    Step 13: Finally, paint on the facial features.
    You're done! Now go start a band.

    To those who have asked how you see out of the head, holes are cut in the eyes (specifically, the black ovals). If you're wondering how easy to see out of the head, here's an article where Michael Fassbender covers says, "It was kind of weird in the beginning, the way it sits on your head. You feel a little bit vulnerable because you've not much peripheral vision. You can only see straight in front of you. You can't hear that well either. But it's quite liberating as well, in the way that masks are. It's amazing how many emotions that face manages to convey. It can look vulnerable, it can look sinister, at times it looks confused."

    Covering the gym ball with paper mâché probably isn't the best option cause it's so much more time consuming. If anyone is still making one try covering paper mâché on an extra large balloon. It took me a lot less time to make, you don't need to cover the whole thing with shrink wrap or re-inflate it, and the size is a lot similar to the head in the movie. Hope this helps!

      Gary Watson I once made a mask covering papier maché over a party balloon, but by that time it was a way smaller mask. So I wanna ask you: What size of balloon did you use?
      Thx

    • @Gazarama7279
      @Gazarama7279 Před 9 lety +1

      I used a punch balloon for mine: the type that has the elastic band tied to the side. You can packs from Amazon for pretty cheap. By the end it was probably about the same size as the head seen in the video. That being said, it took me about 2 and a half weeks or so (because of work etc) to finish the papier maché, but there was no need to deflate/re-inflate anything for a more ovular shape and it turned out great!

      How did you get the ball out at the end, and also how did you cut the hole for your head?

    • @mclintsman
      @mclintsman Před 9 lety +1

      The first you need to do before you let the air out the second time is measure your head (all away around) and than near the area where the plug is for the ball draw a lining for the measurement of your head on Frank. Next thing you want to do is release the air and than cut along the line for your head. I found that having the plug being visible during this process to be the best approach to making sure the head sits right on your shoulders. Hope this helps, I know a visual would be more useful, but I didn't film my Frank Head, just took a few pics throughout the build process. Good Luck JakeWebbFilm on your frank head.

    Gross that nobody ever gives credit to Chris Sievey for Frank's likeness in general. Frank Sidebottom was the Barney of UK in the 80s/90s. They made him look insane in this movie. Almost everything other than the head has nothing to do with the real Frank Sidebottom, or Chris Sievey, or The Freshies, all of which plays an integral part in how Frank was even created. People, this is what plagiarism looks like lol. I love this movie but hate the fact that they disrespected Chris Sieveys whole existence in retrospect. I am glad he did not have to see that happen to his legacy. To be clear, I love the movie, love the actors, the soundtrack kicks ass, just a douche move to decide to use his head as a premise for this movie. Not surprised but bummed that I am not seeing really anyone mention any of this in the comments.

    • @Briiiightside
      @Briiiightside Před 8 lety +5

      You don't cut a hole, you just leave that area bare, so don't cover it with paper mache. When the mask is on it does wobble, I'm going to attach the insert from one of those plastic builder's hard hats into mine to keep it on straight. Otherwise it kinda moves around when you move. I'm gonna make a video about it soon. :)
