    2 concerns: 1) what is the nature of the RF signal at the 3.5mm jack (balanced vs unbalanced & impedance), 2) can the RF signal from this loop be tapped somewhere besides at that jack to get balanced RF at some impedance which can readily be matched to the dual connection input on my AV Center Sony Receiver/Amplifier? I read a claim in Q&A on this type antenna on Amazon that it had a resistance of 300 ohms, which sounds ignorant since it is impedance rather than resistance which one expects data on.

  • @xyzabc2797
    @xyzabc2797 Před 7 lety

    This kind of antenna: I am having great difficulty finding out the impedance out for this sort of antenna, does it have a balun? Is the output to the cable balanced or unbalanced. This type of connector 3.5mm so far as I know was not created to handle RF at all, neither do I have any idea what its impedance is.

  • @xyzabc2797
    @xyzabc2797 Před 7 lety

    Didn't supply a connector on the output end of the cable? But is it designed to attached to a 2 connector input to a receiver, like is common on AV Center Receivers (in back there are 2 grasper connections which look like made for a balanced antenna input.

    My dream MW Dxing setup would be a 3 ft tuned loop antenna with a high impedance tickler winding going into the very best AM only car radio ever built; the 1972 Philco Ford radio for the 72 LTD. I've got me one! An RF amp in the front end, and a 262KC IF strip for selectivity, and a quasi NPN/PNP audio out stage for great sound. I'm retired now. I think its time to build my baby! That radio has no antenna inside by itself. It is entirely dependent on an external antenna, which back in the day was merely an extremely high impedance antenna around 3 ft high. You have to have some GAIN for that! This one has it!

  • @xyzabc2797
    @xyzabc2797 Před 7 lety

    Exactly what is the diagram/components of this loop antenna? Does it have a balun built in? What is the impedance of the loop itself? Is that impedance changed before it gets to the antenna jack (which does not look like balanced output). If you remove all the junk except the capacitor, what is the impedance? Can this be modified for twin lead output?

    Hi Tom, Mag-Loop antennas are High-Q antennas and the variable capacitor has sharp tuning. Since the portable radios have
    ferrite loop antennas, they also need to be rotated with the Tecsun loop when it is rotated. House wiring and other objects in
    the room affects the tuning. Like most antennas, they work best outside away from objects, trees and metal objects.

  • @RealMesaMike
    @RealMesaMike Před 8 lety

    Gotta find a place in the room where the radio station and the noise are at right angles, so you can rotate the loop to null the noise and peak the station.
    Also, with that little Degen, you should keep the radio's internal antenna aligned with the loop. That is hold it so that the radio's left and right sides (not the top and bottom) are towards the open ends of the loop.
    The loop nulls off the open sides of the loop and peaks in the plane of the loop.
    That Spanish station is in Cuba! There was a Radio Progresso ID at 28:30. Whether it's actually on 910 (probably not) or some intermod from shortwave (more likely), who knows?

  • @xyzabc2797
    @xyzabc2797 Před 7 lety

    To understand this antenna I need a diagram of its parts with indications at every relevant spot in the diagram of impedance & balanced vs unbalanced signal. This loop has how many turns with what other components aside from the capacitor & the 3.5mm jack (which is unlikely to have been designed to handle RF)>

    Unshielded cable picks up extra noise making the set up more sensitive for the electrical part of the radio signals, be it wanted or unwanted signals like hf-noise, something you want to avoid and this is where loops come in, both amplified ones or passive loops like the AN-200. These type of antenna’s ignore the electrical part of the radio signal as much as possible but they are not immune for it if interference is too strong, certainly if those noises originate from inside your home. Now, first step is to tune the radio carefully to the wanted station. Then select the wanted bandwith, I suggest to start as narrow as possible. Then connect the AN-200 antenna, either with or without the cable depending on the situation. Then, roughly tune the antenna, observing your S-meter if available. Then, turn the antenna until you see the highest possible signal level on the S-meter or the clearest possible sound if no S-meter is available. Then, meticulously turn the tuning knob on the AN-200. Again, until you find the strongest possible S-reading or clearest sound. I’m sorry, the way you present things in your video doesn’t do justice to the AN-200. It is no use putting the PL-880 or any portable inside the loop, very inconvenient as a matter of fact. Place the loop AND the PL-880 together on your table, so that the radio and the antenna touch each other thereby making sure the ferrite bar inside the radio and the antenna are in line. Do not use the cable as the connection on the PL-880 (and many more as a matter of fact) is only for SW, not for medium wave. So for newbees, first make sure you know on what exact frequency the station transmits and tune to it, no matter if you hear anything or not. Furthermore, the AN-200 is a fine piece of equipment if adjusted properly. This antenna is capable of bringing in signals that seem totally absent. So very accurate tuning of the antenna is needed, quite unlike what is shown in this video. I’m sorry. Greetings from Hekelingen, Holland, Willem.

    There R cheap loop antennas that come with Sony AV center receivers. These have no apparent capacitor for tuning & have a twisted dual wire output which clips into grasping connectors on back of Sony.

    Thanks for the loop antenna tips. I have the same kind of antenna under the Kaito name. I've tried it on several of my radios without much luck. Maybe I'll play with it again just for fun. I could come in handy for AM DX under certain conditions.

    During the day there`s a weak station on 970 AM that I like to listen to but the noise from our satellite box is so bad that it makes it impossible to hear. I tried laying my pocket radio inside the loop with the loop laying down FLAT instead of standing up. I turned the tuner on the loop clockwise until it reached resonance and right past that point the static interference vanished almost completely.
    At night I get similar results on 1200 AM buy placing the loop beside the radio, between it and the source of interference, facing the SIDE of the loop towards the interference. This time the null effect occurred when I turned the tuner knob on the loop counterclockwise past the point of resonance. At night the loop helps keep stations understandable longer when they fade in and out. The loop has been a blessing to me by making my two FAVORITE stations listenable again after we got our new satellite receiver box that caused horrible interference.

      If the connector runs from a side of the radio far from the internal loop and where it enters the pcb, and the internal wire from the connector passes near a lot of the circuitry, this this makes a lot of sense because the wires are picking up internal noise as opposed to inducing a signal onto the internal loop.

  • @szaki
    @szaki Před 4 lety

    You should not put the radio inside the loop.
    The way it works, you orient the loop antenna towards the station, put the radio next to the antenna in a right angle, the way the internal antenna is than tune the loop antenna.

    Hi Tom, Ive ben watching your show for a little while, you know a litttle bit about radios thats for sure and thats why I come to you with this question. I know this is about an Medium Wave antenna for the Tecsun, but I am looking for a loop for shortwave for my 660, I would like it to be under say 250 bucks or so. I would like something simple that just plugs into the 660s antenna plug and maybe has a control box, sort of like how the Ccrane MW antenna works, love that thing for MWDXing. Thanks for what you do and any advice you can give. Feel free to respond hear or even twitter @KC3CDV

    I just purchased a Grundig satellite 3400 professional edition in limited edition brown, real radios r not manufactured in China; purchasing endless quantities of cheap, plastic, made in China radios ends up costing what a quality radio costs. It is not abt quantity; it is abt quality. I bet u hve a hundred radios. I know lots of horders. the grundig sits on my desk in the living room and a sony icf2010 sits beside my bed. no China; no hording; no junk. u hve far more money invested in radio than me but my radios r far better.

      @gklinger Před 6 lety +3

      Saying that "real radios" are not manufactured in China is a ridiculous, Sinophobic statement. As for your radios being better, who cares? This isn't a contest. Tom has a lot of radios because he's a radio enthusiast who collects radios. Implying that he's a hoarder is just rude. Another reason Tom has a lot of radios is because many of his shows feature comparisons of radios. There are thousands of us who enjoy Tom's Radio Room Show so he must be doing something right.
