Peak District Walk - Kinder Scout - Crowden Clough, Kinder Gates & The Downfall

  • This weeks wander sees me head up one of the more strenuous routes up on to Kinder Scout, the Crowden Clough Scramble. It's a really excellent way to get yourself up on to the plateau and has some interesting technical bits which make it very fun indeed. I had planned to meet my friend Tim at Crowden Tower so my scramble up Crowden was done at top speed. We then headed for the centre of the plateau through Kinder Gates over towards the Downfall. After that we headed to the northern edge via Sandy Heys and then along to Fairbrook Naze. We then made our way over the plateau once again to the Official Summit, Pym Chair, The Woolpacks, before finally heading back down Crowden to the car at Barber Booth. It was a really great day out and a mini tour of some of the highlights Kinder Scout has to offer.

I still love watching this video and all rest rest you’ve made Dean. Just got back from a week in the Peaks, staying as usual in Tideswell and now missing it already. Had to get a quick video shot of my favourite route onto Kinder’s South side to ease the pain of getting back to work. We were going to do the Crowden Clough route again last week but we ran out of time. Did get the Northern Edge done though, we did the whole length of it and it was fantastic. Even a torrent of hail out of nowhere failed to dampen our enjoyment. Nether Red Brook Clough looks like an awesome scramble. Another one for the “Peak District Walk” list that never seems to end. Thank you for your videos and looking forward to anything new you have planned. ATB.

@@DeanRead Thanks Dean, looking forward to that new video. Yes, we had a great time once again and I am planning the next trip already. Really can’t wait, although we do have lovely countryside here in Sussex, it doesn’t offer the challenges, views or variety of the Peaks. I was looking at Jaggers Clough through my DSLR lens whilst having lunch at Hope Cross last week and thinking it looks like one heck of a scramble near the top. I wonder if it’s worth a try? I’m not too keen on ending up in casualty though 😬

Next day we came back parked at barbers booth and took 30 min to get to Jacobs ladder cleared that in no time then kept going up till we reached the peat which we got very lost in and eventually got to the kinder summit it took like 7 hours

Thank you so much for you're great comment... My daughter did her first wild camp at the age of 9 up on Kinder Scout, there are some gentler routes up which are more suitable for kids. You could perhaps try going up via Jacobs Ladder which gets steep for a short while but it's a well paved track at that point so would be doable. I love it up there, I was considering doing a Peak District meet up at some point this summer perhaps. No solid plans as yet, I'm pretty shy :-)

If you ever plan any walks, I would be interested. I love the outdoors, but generally go out alone. The missus and friends don't do walking much! Sad really!! Ha Ha
