A Very Wet Overnight Camp in the Peak District. Wild Camp with East Anglian Bushcraft. Kinder Scout.

- In this video, I am up in Derbyshire with Craig from East Anglian Bushcraft for a hill top camp up on Kinder Scout - the highest point in the Peak District.
A very wet ascent up Grindsbrook Clough takes up high up on to the Kinder plateau where we are met with misty low cloud and more rain - lots of it.
With poor visibility, we search for a reasonably firm spot to set up our tents and shelter from the worsening weather conditions.
Hot drinks and hot food are the order of the day, warming up in our tents and trying our best to be comfortable for the evening and to get some rest.
Despite the weather, it was great to be up there and spend the night and the morning rewarded us with tantalising glimpses of the sun, which slowly burnt through the clag to give us the views we had hoped for.
In hindsight, I made some poor choices on this little adventure into the high hills - most significantly that I let myself get soaked by the rain on the hike up. I should have put my waterproofs on straight away rather than hoping the rain would pass. The result was a damp and uncomfortable night sleeping in my wet clothes - I also wish I had taken some dry socks. Secondly, I should have taken a warmer sleeping bag - I chose a 2 season bag in favour of keeping weight down, but it cost me in warmth comfort (although, this was probably due more to my wet clothes than anything else) and finally, I wish I’d taken proper coffee for the morning - you’ve got to start the day properly folks!
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching.

A tip for if you're going to do much Peak District camping is to keep your inner tent in a dry bag and just pitch an outer and a ground sheet first. It gives you more room to operate, you can dry out an not worry about getting everything wet. I like to keep my inner as bone dry as possible.
Good call! My inner got pretty wet when I first got in just from the water dripping off me until I took my waterproof off. 👍👍
Absolutely 💯. All of the tents I own. Are outer shells first & inner's second.
thats a pro tip
Great Video! A shame the weather was typical for Kinder on your 1st camp here. 😂
Hope to see you on another video here soon 😊The Hayfield side of Kinder is also worth a visit!
Always a good day when my favourite outdoorsman puts a video out, thank you!
I agree stephen😊
Simon is back. Good! I need a break.
Don't think Kent Survival could manage that physical challenge, Simon 😂😂
In a world going mad it’s enjoyable seeing you back on the trail.Thank you Simon for another wonderful video
I honestly would love to be able to do what you do just as a hobby, to enjoy the outdoors and camp etc, im severely limited with my mobility due to MS so I feel unsafe to do such activities. But I find comfort and enjoyment watching your videos so great job Simon
You should. There are plenty of camp locations that don't require extensive mobility for exactly your reasons. Get a group together, split the chores.
C'mon people, let's help Simon hit the 200K subs. He truly deserves it a long time ago.
Simon, next time boil some water, put it in your bottles and use them in your sleeping bag to heat you and it up. The water can still be used the next day, plus, you need to always change out of your wet stuff into dry so that you will be warm.
To all Simon’s international viewers - how to kit-up for a camp in the British isles: 1) it’s raining 2) it’s about to start raining 😉 - great vid Simon as always and nice to meet you Craig (and that weather looked horrible!) hope to see more collaborations 🎉 👏
Swimming in icy water lessons.
If you can see the mountains - it is going to rain.
If you can't see the mountains - it is forking raining!
@@jonahtwhale1779 😂😂😂😂😂😂
That’s about right! 😂
Yeah, sleeping in wet clothing, you know you're alive haha
Another lovely video to watch Simon, thank you. Nothing like a wild weather trip to appreciate the simple comforts in life. All the best.
Might be worth chucking a emergency foil blanket in your bag for these Simon . No weight and extra warmth if you need it . Great video Btw.
Yay Simon is back thank you Simon for an awesome video. We love you here in northern California. You’re an awesome bloke. Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you Thomas! 😁🙏🏻
How cool is that?!?😎
As someone also from Northern California, I agree. We love your videos.
Same here!
Here in the Philippines...two seasons..hot and hotter
Normally I enjoy living vicariously through your adventures. This one, not so much 😂. You’re a tough Bloke! Cheers from Kentucky, USA.
I absolutely loved this. You and Craig are a great combination! 😁
I agree heather 😊
Thanks Heather!
This is a brilliant collaboration ❤ this is gonna be good😂
Both times I went to Edale was on the train from Manchester, at 13 then in my 60s. First time we walked over Mam Tor to Castleton and hitched a ride back in a police car! Great area.
Happy days! I wonder if you’d be so lucky to hitch a lift with the Police these days!!
Old stomping grounds for me when we still lived in the UK (emigrated years ago). These videos bring back memories of when I was younger and fitter.
The countryside is magnificent! Epic episode 👍
Great camp out, Simon.
Waterproof Bottoms or not, I always have a dedicated set of dry “sleep clothes” for such purposes.
I noticed you stayed in your soaked trousers during your food prep scenes. Also, could have put your meal pouch “inside “ your jacket while rehydrating.
Hyperthermia is no joke.
Thanks for all your extra efforts in sharing under challenging conditions!
I (rather foolishly) decided against taking any clothes to change into, in fact I rarely do, but I wish I had on this occasion! I did move it inside my jacket off camera - much toastier!
Welcome to my neck of the woods.
I knew you were still going to be damp in the morning. Never a good idea to try and dry out in your sleeping bag on top of a peak. You'd have had a far more comfortable night going Commando in your bag. Every day's a school day!
Also, it seems a shame to be up there with a buddy but hunkered down in seperate tents. Two-person tent next time, maybe?
Having been up and down Kinder more times than I can remember, plus living in Cumbria as a youth, I always pack warmer than the season/conditions suggest. I'd rather have the extra weight in my bag knowing I'm going to be toasty and comfortable.
Still a good video though.
Hope you're night in the woods was more enjoyable.
It's always a treat to watch your adventures and a joy to watch you enjoying and laughing the whole time, no matter the circumstances 😁. Bless you and stay safe 🙏.
It’s good to see you out camping in my home county, and up at my favourite place in Derbyshire for an overnight camp. The Kinder Plateau is vast, you would have to walk a full 26 kilometres to explore all of it up there! And pretty much all of those are above 600 meters too..
It is quite varied terrain visually once you come to know it, so I wouldn’t call it featureless at all, personally.
I highly recommend you have a camp at the ‘Woolpacks’ next time your up this way! 👍🏻
The weather does close in up there fast and is very changeable, and you rarely get to see both a sunset and sunrise during an overnighter, especially this time of year..
Tough, wet, miserable conditions, made enjoyable for us by spending time with you, Simon. The hike down was lovely, beautifully filmed. Hope you don't come down with a cold.
We'll check out Craig's video too 'East Anglian Bushcraft.' Love you Simon, ATB from a West Aussie family. Edit: next fortnight's video should see you at 200K :) so happy for you.
In this sort of weather I always carry a dry bag with a set of merino wool base layers in there and my synthetic down jacket, Also I never use down items, living in the lakes I have found that even a couple odlf days of just damp weather really degrades their performance.
ATB Simon, thanks for the video.
OMG! If you had gone the very next day, it would have been fair weather, blue skies, and great views. However, I'm so glad to see this video. Just a nice soft day.
I have a lot of great memories of camping in heavy rain and gale-force winds. My tent would be pushed all the way down to the ground and against my face. When the wind would let up, the sucking sound and pop💢 as the tent would come of my skin, would wake me up every time.
My philosophy: You never know how comfortable you are unless you're a little bit uncomfortable.
Oh mate that looked brutal! Especially sleeping in wet gear. I look forward to seeing you lads in the woods soon!🔥
Took me back to my first summer camp in Edale. I mentioned on Craig's channel.
First trip up kinder the group got soaked and was drying the vest my mum embarrassingly forced me to wear lol.
Got stuck on a further day out and we were forced to come down a steep hill and my mum never got the marks out my trousers for that!
Only went on it cuz my tutor promised chips! 😂
The other tutor trekked us off singing spam, spam, spam and brown girl in the ring.
Finished it off with girl vs Boyz no rules rugby at camp and we slaughtered the boys 😅
Thanks for triggering memories from 1978!!❤
Thanks for taking us on a soggy rainy day while I sit in my easy chair with the heater on sipping coffee. ; - )
I always look forward to a Simon video. Somehow getting in a sleeping bag with wet clothes on didnt seem like a good idea. Hard to stay warm when your wet. Happy you didn't get hypothermia. Thanks for taking us along.
Alway enjoyable, did have flashback of your last time on the Carneddau. It always a call when you put the wets on, especially when going up hill. It really telling how the cold can make and easy task much more difficult, Many thanks for sharing your adventures.
.....another great video. Always a treat.🍻👍
Kinder Scout in the pouring rain , deja-vu .
haha. I had just woken up and started watching this... and the freaked out when I saw him driving on the "wrong" side of the road. I was like "holy shit, this dudes crazy. Woke me up pretty quick 🤣😂
Lovely video - I always take some long johns and a change of long sleeve top for sleeping in plus dry socks! worth the extra weight! A much nicer way up is via Hayfield and Knder Low End :)
Wish I had this time Angela! And maybe some of those lush tent booties 😁
That reminded me of when I did the Pennine Way years ago. Kinder Scout was one massive bog that took me hours to cross.
Many thanks Simon, for taking me back nearly 40 years, to when I was doing my DoE Gold award expedition, up and over from Settle
Awesome stuff Simon, great to see you out and about again.👍🏻
Bleak yet beautiful. Another cracking 'Bloke in the Woods' Video. That looked pretty tough going.
Gortex till end ex my friend! 😉 I find leaving wet kit on in the tent to try and dry it only gets condensation in the inner. I leave it in the vestibule and put it on wet in the morning works for me on through hikes. Great stuff as always 👍
OMG I have the same car 😂 love my Pug! Can't wait for your new vid, glad your back.
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
Cheers, Simon! Love your videos
Great vid as always, thx. If I might suggest, never, ever wear wet gear in your bag. Always carry a set of long johns: to sleep in and you can just put rain pants over those and walk out.
If you can pack in beer, you can pack in some under thermals.
Watching video now good to see you 2 together loving it East Anglia on tour puckers
Thank you Simon for entertaining us and thank you Craig for your service 🇬🇧.Awesome collaboration any more planned guys 👌🤞😁
Well said tony😊
That’s what I would call character building 😆, great vid 👍
yay my favorite two people... love you both, thanks for making this film.
The tutti fruity drink hot is propa nice love ur vids simon keep up the good work
Keep them coming fella 👍
2 legends together....brilliant!
Pity about the weather!!
What a coincidence to see this, we done the same this weekend only we stayed in the Woolpacks area of Kinder Scout it's a lot flatter and less boggy, and we had beautiful sunshine (sorry to rub it in 😅) yeah Fjallraven trousers in driving rain are about as waterproof as a flannel, great video as always Simon, hope the next one is dryer for you 😊
Haha - you had a rare occurrence up there by all accounts! Cheers Andy!
That was a lovely video, sorry you got damp and cold that’s not nice .
Thanks Simon! That sun must have felt good after a wet night. A really beautiful place...
A couple of soft days as they say in my part of the world! Great content!
Simon and Craig - looking forward to your vids of the woodland camp and a bit of a fire side chat.
Oh a new video! I came onto CZcams at the perfect time then. Now, time to relax and enjoy, thanks Simon 😊
We enjoyed watching it very much, thank you.
Your in Paul Messner land now. Great to see you both up here.
Brilliant to see you out with Craig. It's been a long time coming. Canoe trip next time maybe? 😊😊
I don't go backpacking anymore but this video is very reminiscent of my experiences. I do miss it.
Brilliant to see you out with your boy.
Nothing beats coming into shelter in the tent after a very wet day on the mountain. Getting a hot brew and some food. changing into dry clothing, unpacking the sleeping bag and get warm and cosy. The mountains are beautiful but can be challenging.
I agree with that primeflux😊
except you can never get warm !
@@Dogteddy1 Depends if your tent have a wood stove or not. Yes I am starting to get old and want my comforts :)
I dont think that he should have drink beers in those conditions , alcool tend to lower the body temperature. He should have kept drinking hot drinks .
@@Dogteddy1always had an issue with being cold getting into the tent until a I watched a video about the dangers of going into your tent and sleeping system cold. Basically you have to do some activity before you get in. Something about your core temperature. I do some press ups (very badly) before I get into my bag and it works! 👍
You certainly earned those views Simon. A tough call I’d say, stay damp overnight or have to put damp things on in the morning. I think I would have gone for the latter. Assuming you had dry night time things you could have changed in to? Just back from your home turf, Three Rivers again. Jodi send her regards. Thanks for taking us with you. Really love to join you in a canoe camp sometime if you fancy it? Atb. Paul.
The wind would have driven me bonkers. The constant flapping of the tent would have kept me up all night. I would have least needed a few beers to put me to sleep. Excellent video mate. Keep them coming i look forward to every one.
Awesome as always, Simon.
Looked like a cold 🥶 one, yikes 😬 😳
Thank you for sharing your awesome adventure.
You're Awesome
KEEP ADVENTURING
GOD BLESS YOU.
Simon,
Nice to see you out with Craig. I hope you do more videos together in the future. Both of you have similar interests and you shake up your videos with with different adventures. A good match for collaborative videos. More please!
I have been up on Kinder Scout plateau numerous times. Experienced every sort of weather, wind, rain, white outs, but the worst was during one of the hottest days I have experienced. Did a circumnavigation of the plateau. If I remember correctly it was 32km of hard slog through bog. North ridge is the nicest, far less people! In bad weather navigation skills are a must, going off track can send you round in circles.
It would nice to see you do some canoe vids together.
All the best.
Dan
Great to see the godfathers of bushcraft holding it down in the Dark Peak, an amazing place rain or shine, nice one 🤙
Lovely video again Simon and Craig but it was a shame that there was rain .
Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you Simon for taking us with you on your amazing adventures , and stunning view cheers Simon and Craig 👌👍😊
Very different but my two favourite channels in the same place. It's an East Anglian thing. Great video as always Simon 👍
Two of the best people to camp in that weather 😂😂
I love these videos! They take me to a place completely foreign to me. How people survived and thrived in that environment is completely baffling to me
Simon I always love your video’s. As a nurse I have to say you looked a tad hypothermic, when you got in the tent there. It concerned me. Please don’t drink strong alcohol again, if you ever get that cold mate. It’s a recipe for disaster, stay safe ❤
I think I was starting to feel the effects of hypothermia, but I did warm up once in the tent with my jacket and wooly hat on - damp but warmish. 👍😁
No chance to turn an alc into self responsible 🤷♀️ It’s a recipe for disaster, yes it is not the first time we already watched 😉
I can relate to long wet nights in a tent with a camera forever fogging up, and that's just in the summer.
Great video considering the conditions you had.
A wild, lonely place! Nice video Simon
I learned motorbike camping in the Pyrenees mountains. Rule no1, protect your dry sleeping clothes, dry sleeping bag and dry sleeping mat as the absolute number 1 priority. Keep them in separate dry bags. You can spend all day in wet clothes moving about, but you need that lovely dry warm sleep to recover your strength.
Nice to see that wooden foot bridge (2 mins in) is going on strong. I think that it was built by local craftsman extraordinaire Mr Robin Wood
Good video Simon, you did look cold at times. Shows how quickly things can turn to poo if you're not careful. Kind regards Rob
Heck of a video Simon. Thanks for sharing with us.
Cheers Simon.....
Just started watching but gave a thumbs up before even starting as I know it'll be a good one!
❤
Simon a damp chilly bloke in a tent ❤
Crazy people. Loved it. ❤
Spectacular views on the way down!
With that almost white background when you’re eating your chocolate, you could be at the train station w Harry and meeting up w Dumbledore 🤣😂🤣
Thank you for the vid
Song choice at the start is beautifully done Simon
You’re about due to make a feature film mate :) special you are
I enjoyed my bowl of hot stew all the more while watching you putting your ration pack inside your coat to help warm up 😂. Fabulous views on day two. Great video Simon. Keep up the good work 👍.
I applaud your determination to make a go of this trip, in spite of very nasty weather! The views once the sun had shone were beautiful! Thank you for taking the trouble to set up the different angle shots! Well done.
I can’t believe you wore your wet clothes to bed. That would make you miserable. Good video.
I am hearing the music of …. Wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuthering Heights…. Kate Bush’s haunting song “ Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home, I'm so cold…. “
Enjoyed watching your video but I think your crazy! Beer and wine may help but I much prefer lying on a sun lounger and relaxing by the beach. However , 10 out of 10 for grit and determination!
😂😂
Sorry you guys had such a wet and claggy time of it up here, you know what they say... Its grim up north 😅. To be fair, the next day was glorious for you both and at least you got some views pal.
It's a hard camp when your cold isn't it. It does feel better though once that tent is up. Bet the couple of beers made you feel better dude.
Thanks Simon.
Great to see two of my favorite CZcams backpacker/tenters together! Shame about the rain...looking forward to more of your joint endeavours! ATB
Hello Simon
Great video again.
I follow you a long time and Chris also and i'm looking foorwerth to his video too .
Keep them coming !!
Craig in stead of Chris ofcorse ! Sorry !😂
Well now, ain't that the way it can go !!!!
Thank goodness for you it was a chance to really check ✅ it for leaks😂😮😅. It must have passed 😊!!
Brilliant to see you and Craig together another great video
Thank you for this video. Looks like somewhat sketchy conditions. That much wet and that much wind could be a serious combination. Thank goodness for good gear.
Very glad you were in a tent and not a bivy bag 😊👍
Nice trip Simon. I know weather is not always predictable but you made the best out of it. Stay healthy and until next time. 👍🥳
That was a hard night. It was beautiful on the way down as the sun came out. Scenery was gorgeous. My guess is that the next video will hear you say that you slept very well. I hope so anyway. Thanks for another great video, Simon!
That is quite the ration pack it’s got everything but the kitchen sink!! 🤣
Miserable weather for sure and I'm sorry you got so wet and had to stay that way. Wish we could have gotten to meet with your friend a little more, but that's why we called that weather miserable - it put a damper (no pun intended) on pretty much everything. It really is beautiful countryside, even in the rain and fog. Thanks for sharing your adventure!! Stay safe and healthy, and dry if possible! See you next time.
Thank you! You’ll get to see more if Craig in pt 2 😁
