    I'm glad to see the anti drainback valve was silicone. I own a toyota and have used this for a massive road trip in the past with full synthetic Castro. I can see why some filters don't need an anti drainback valve if they are mounted upside down, as there will always be oil left in the can if the baseplate faces up. But, maybe I'm wrong and it still needs one. Even so, this seems like a very solid filter for the price. 65,000 miles and dutiful oil changes with full synthetic oil later, my engine is still tight as a drum. But now I use Purolator Boss and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum due to all the great advice on these various channels. Thanks for adding to the knowledge base for a fairly nice quality filter which doesn't like to promote itself (humble I guess). I would go 7,500 with this Toyota filter but only with a high quality full synthetic oil.

    Nice to see that Toyota went back to or stayed with spin on oil filters on their new vehicles instead of the “ nightmare “ cartridge filters.
    Funny how cartridge filters cost more or the same as spin on with half the material 😡

    I believe it's a 95% filter rating at 20 microns. It's a Denso standard for Toyotas. It's a synthetic and glass polyester blend.

      @WhipCityWrencher  Před 2 lety

      My take on it is I think paper media does a pretty good job of stopping contaminants from going through the filter media but it does hold it and trap it as well as synthetic media does.
      If the filter never goes into bypass then no worries.

    • @benniestander2725
      @benniestander2725 Před 2 lety +1

      My opinion is just that. I do my oil changes at maximum 8000 km or 5000 miles. No matter what oil, or filter. So for me paper filters work fine. Of coarse some guys I know do there oil at 10 000 km or 7500 miles or more. Then I would rather change the filter half way through the oil change. Never believed the 15 000 km oil changes and there is no evidence that convince me otherwise. The only time I ever saw that you can do the long drain intervals is with the big rigs doing mainly highway driving. But even then you still do your oil changes every year. No matter the kilometres / miles.

    Why are the pleats not sealed all the way out to their external edge? Seems like oil can enter that inner gap of the fold and bypass the filtering media. Metal inner core also has a gap at the bottom of the seam. This does not look like a quality filter.

      There's no reason it needs to be sealed all the way to the edge. The plastic bond holds it all together very well. Also, it doesn't matter if there is a small gap at the seam. Only filtered oil is in this area and doesn't affect anything.

    These are exactly like the cartridges. You only have to seat the inside of the filter because the clear make up sealant forms a perfect surface. Also each pleat is glued just like paper air filters at the edges. In my humble opinion they limited the size of filter on the engine by not allowing a larger diameter gasket. A long filter would be trick.

    And the award for "Super-Duper-Filter-Cutter-Opener-Guy" goes to WHIP CITY WRENCHER -- (applause) --
    The old "Burn It to Learn It!" trick works every time, and it saves a lot of guesswork about materials used in manufacturing. Back in the early '60s, plastics molders burned plastic materials to tell them apart.
    It's nice to see that accurate method used again.
    As for that OEM Toyota filter -- NO BUENO !! The Filter Makers MUST put the Micron Rating on the box, so we know RIGHT AWAY whether to buy the filter or not. This Denso filter failed to display the Micron Rating, and should be left on the shelf.
    Same with ADBVs -- If the Anti-DrainBack-Valve is NOT made of Silicone material, it should be REJECTED.
    We, as consumers, must put pressure on the Filter Makers to give us a uniform standard of quality, and demand certain features from their oil filters, such as the Silicone ADBVs and the Micron Rating on the box.
    We must demand that they tell us what materials are used -- terms like "paper" and "cardboard" have no place as oil filter components -- I mean, what kind of "paper" is this stuff??
    Is it sandpaper, waxpaper, flypaper, newspaper, or wallpaper !??
    It makes NO DIFFERENCE what we call it -- the only things that really matter are the Micron Rating and the Flow Rate, but you'll never get them to publish that -- it varies too much.
    Anyways, the gluing method and the NOP END CAPS AT ALL were excellent features that should be used in other brands, but there are patent restrictions that prevent a "universal" construction method.
    I would only use this oil filter if I had a Toyota that was still under Warranty Protection -- other than that, a FRAM Ultra or BOSCH Premium Oil Filter will get my money.

      When those manufacturers don't tell us all the stuff we wanna know, we can't ASSume that they're a bunch of Scaredy-Cats, or that they're "up to no good" -- because we know that there are LEGITIMATE changes to products that DO NOT directly effect the "bottom line".
      Many of the changes that we've seen in the last 2 years are a result of environmental concerns -- using more enviro-friendly materials that are less energy-consuming, and reducing landfill waste are now goals that went unmet in past years.
      These guys don't tell us the specs on the box -- for the same reason that COKA-COLA doesn't print the ingredients on the label.

    Is the K&N HP-1003 better?

      I don't know I've never opened the K&N HP-1003 and compared it to this Toyota oil filter.

    Love Filter Friday!
    The filter cartridge looks to be from a canister type filter with the plastic top.
    Filter element looks nice. Certainly beats the Toyota filter you opened a year ago. czcams.com/video/owVOFbeJzqM/video.html. That filter had issues.
    Thanks for all that you do.

    I've watched a number of videos very similar to this one. Eliminating the unnecessary "unboxing" and other BS could get these videos down to 3 or 4 minutes.

      Really, the unboxing takes about 3 sec. the other BS is probably about a minute at the most.

      For the price, I think it's a pretty good oil filter, a micron rating would be nice though.

      It is better than a cartridge filter!
