2004 Volvo V70 - Well Thought Out

  • I usually get disappointed in whatever car I'm in with some little thing, or many little things, that you take one look at and think, "Why would they do that?". The V70 is different. When Volvo sets a goal, they reach it and then some.

Saab was a great car safe fun to drive and all the Volvos Ive owned for the most part(the V40 1st gen was a little more needy) where great cars. Now well the Chinese own the company and because of that no thank you plus the new cars look like utter manure.

    My wife and I presently have three Volvos - in the last 5 years we've owned six. Two 2000 LPT manual gas C70's (still have one - sold the other one as we drove it 192 miles the last year) and a number of V70's.
    The V70's we still own are a 2002 V70 auto with 245K miles (394K km) on it (used for trips to Sweden three times/year) - bought for £800 with 209K. Runs like a clock and like new inside - an oil change with filter ever year and a transmission dump at the same time and the car purrs and shifts like new.
    The other is a 2005 XC70 (auto AllWheel drive). It now has 190K on the engine and we just came back from a 1,923 mile trip to Switzerland and back - average fuel consumption - 47 mpg (US).
    Oh yeah, perhaps I should mention the V70's are both Volvo's amazing D5 (five cylinder) diesel.
    Each C70 were hand built in Uddevalla, Sweden by a team who built the car from scratch - which means every C70 handles very different. One of ours felt light and nimble, the other one heavy and solid - but both were/are a delight to drive (seats, remember)..:)
    Our cars - all of them - are rock solid - not a squeak anywhere and the leather interiors are like new. All they need are normal sensible care - just like most things..:)

    The main problem with these (I had a 2004 S60 2.4i and a 2005 S60R) is all the damn bushings go bad and the motor starts rattling around. Replace the motor mounts, especially the upper one, and everything tightens up nicely. Something about recyclable rubber.

    • @vtl1349
      @vtl1349 Před 5 lety +1

      They did something about eco rubber. Mine were replaced with new OE few years and like 80k miles ago (20% was gravel), they hold up very well.

  • @jfv65
    @jfv65 Před 9 lety +28

    i used to have one, it does have a weak slushbox , the solenoid block wears out which results in bad shift flaring. The rubber bushings in the front control arms wear out fast...
    The engine is almost bullit proof and very fast. (250km/h) It has 20 valves, variable cam timing on the exhaust cam, coil on plugs, it can run frugal when you are gentle with the throttle but when you get on it it turns into a true gasguzler.
    The turbo is a Mitsubishi tdo4-16-something with internal wastgate. This wastegate and it's port is prone to cracks which hurts spool-up time.
    And it has an electronic throttlebody that goes bad (shitty italian Magneti-Marelli part! Same deal as on a Maserati GT, expensive part! )
    Other then that it is a great roadtrip can. The best seats in the automotive world. They are even better then the ones in the 850

    • @vtl1349
      @vtl1349 Před 5 lety +5

      Throttle body is a bullet-proof Bosch here. Valve body problems were mostly sorted out in 2003 (and there's Sonnax). Turbo is water-cooled and will run forever for average driver.
      Also I don't know why nobody mentions these P2 Volvo's reject to rust...

    These old Volvos are worth preserving and they are future classics in my opinion. Ive got a 2007 V70 with all the goodies: factory trailer hitch, xenon headlights, painted trim all around, fancy radio, 16" alloys on 205/55 tires (some models cam with 195/60 tires), 6 Speed Automatic and the glorious D5 2.4 Liter Inline 5 Diesel engine.
    Mine is a late 2nd gen D5 so its the best version of the D5 you can get: It has a DPF and EGR but its still Euro4 and therefore not problematic at all.
    I will disassemble the intake manifold assembly soon to clean it out and possibly delete the swirl flaps and the EGR. I could just unplug the EGR valve and see if that pisses the ECU off enough to go into limp or throw codes.
    It sounds really amazing for an old diesel. Doesn't knock at all, cold starts are no problem and its really smooth once warmed up.
    Suspension needed some work in the front done, tires needed replaced and the car had a full brake job recently.
    Its in better shape now than what it looked like when I bough it.

    I've owned one of these, the 5 pot sound is indeed very addicting and I now hate driving my current turbocharged 4 cylinder despite it being faster while being more economic for a similar size and weight car. However, the ridiculous turning circle and the lack of traction in corners on wet roads (which is 75% of the time where I live) despite running good tyres killed it for me, and the character of the engine put me in trouble with the law multiple times. The most enjoyable car I ever had was a Volvo 740, mostly because of it being a small RWD landyacht that still kinda handles, and I'm still dedicated to find a late mint automatic (yes, I prefer slushboxes, unfortunately they're rare in Europe) turbo estate one one day. Having the 5 cylinder engine in a 740 would be perfect, however that's illegal in my country.

    I bought a 122s brand-new in 1967. It was a cool car but it could not take a beating, at least from this young driver. I actually had several, and combined them for parts. I've had a series of Subarus because I needed 4 wheel drive and they were the first. But there were a lot of weaknesses in each one. I came back to Volvo with my xc70 which now has about 230k miles. I feel that is the kind of car I always wanted, solid, competent and comfortable. Here in Vermont we used to say that you drive a car until it no longer casts a shadow. At 16 years and counting, there isn't a spot of rust on that car.(How do they do that?) In winter, this machine will go anywhere. Overall, I rate it as 'pretty good.' In Vermont, that is a high complement. My wife and daughter say it's time for me to get a new car. No, it's not.

    I just purchased my 4th Volvo wagon online a couple of months ago. This one is a 2010 V70 R-Design w/184k miles. 184k miles you say? Not worried a bit because it was a one owner car maintained at the selling dealership since new. It drives like a dream and with a purchase price slightly over $5k probably the cheapest in the US for sale. The 3.2 engine is smooth with no leaks and the transmission shifts perfectly. Everything works. I park it next to my 2007 Volvo S80 V8 which is another great set of wheels. Volvo's have been flying under the radar for years.

    Great cars. I've not long bought a 2000 V70 2.4T (200hp), with close as makes no difference 270,000 on the clock, and to be honest, at the moment, you wouldn't really know. Sure she has a couple of problems (one rear shock's gone, and tail gate struts are done), but nothing too serious as of yet. But, she sounds great when you drop a gear or two and give her a boot fool, and she just goes! In fact, she's so smooth going up the gears that you have to keep you're eye on the rev range... if you don't you're gonna red-line it before you even think know it.
    Power of a sports car, handles fantastic, yet you have the safety and practicality of a big spacious, extremely comfortable, wagon that can pull a large trailer as well. It's one of the ultimate production cars in my view.
    It's so comfy my mum falls asleep every time she sits in it.
    Had an 1999 S40 before the V70... was a great car as well. Both of them had F-all rust on them. I've worked on cars more than quarter of the age with three-four times the rust. Both my Volvo's and most other people's that I've been under are pretty damn solid, despite being right next to the sea.

And the best bit... The guy had never even had the head off. Just regular servicing and using all Volvo parts.

      OR ARE THEY TOO MUCH OF A MONEY PIT?

    • @s.lawrie8466
      @s.lawrie8466 Před 8 lety +3

      +Edward Koepke Depends where you buy parts. Volvo parts are expensive, but they last. I do almost always buy second hand, and for the V70 second hand parts are quite cheap because there are a lot of them. I personally don't see the point in the sedan.
      Wagons are undoubtedly the better vehicle. contrary to popular belief, having a wagon doesn't add that much weight (the 2000 V40(wagon) is only 20KG heavier than the S40(Sedan)), and I'd say they look sleeker.
      So for a little extra weight, which makes no difference at all performance wise, you get much much more practicality, and a better looking car.
      It baffles me as to why people buy sedan versions of any car.
      Any car can become a money pit, depends on how you treat it, and how its been treated before. But Volvo's tend to be a bit more reliable.

  • @alc8908
    @alc8908 Před 6 lety +1

    As the owner of an xc70, I only have 3 gripes: 1) it doesn't have coin holder slots in the center console. 2) there is only one "lock" button on the driver's and passenger's door, meaning that instead of just being able to choose between pressing "lock" or "unlock", if I want to unlock all of the doors after a single door has been opened, I have to press the button to lock all of the doors, and then press it a second time to unlock them; it's kind of annoying. 3) the gas charged liftgate supports are buried between the roof and the headliner (instead of just bolted on the outside like most cars) meaning that if I ever have to change them I have to pry off at least 3 plastic trim panels; it's WAY MORE work than it should be. Aside from that, great car, and yes, it is EXTREMELY comfortable :)

    • @TyphoonVstrom
      @TyphoonVstrom Před 5 lety

      I wouldn't worry about the buried gas struts, my 94 850 still has it's original struts and they're fine.

      Yeah they seem to last a long time, and I've pulled apart all of the trim and headliner in the rear in my 2006 XC70. It took me about 30 min to take off all the trim from the B-pillar back. Getting to both shocks for the liftgate should only take 10-15 min.

    Nice. I have owned an 850, a P26 (this one) and a V70III. This P2 version has a better overall finish, but I like the 850 better, because you are much more engaged in the driving experience. More noise, more road feel. And it is as square as can be, which is taking coolness one step beyond. Oh yeah - one serious design flaw is the handbrake on the model you have driven. Feeble and prone to fail, actually potentially leading to dangerous situations.

    While all of them are reliable, I own the spec you want if you want ultimate reliability. It's the last model year (2008), so all the small things have been ironed out from it's long run of like 8 years. And it's the 2.4 naturally aspirated engine (170hp) with the 5-speed manual transmission. I bought it 2 years ago with 130,000km (80,000 miles), and I've driven it 30,000km (18,000 miles) since then with no issues what so ever. It is a road trip machine. I've gone on four long road trips, each around 3-5000km round trip to the very north of Sweden (up in the mountains fishing) and it hauls multiple people with loads of gear and never complains. Love this thing to death. I'm just a little sad that there will never be a car like it again. And it's not getting any younger, so naturally issues will occur sooner or later. I hope to keep on to it for as long as it is economically viable to do so. Then I will just jump to an EV. New cars with 4-pots are the most boring cars you can buy and so I will skip that and just go for an EV instead. I hope Volvo makes an EV wagon eventually. Maybe they would call it an EV60/EV90. I'd buy that.
