Welcome back! Today I'm driving a beautiful example of a 6-speed manual 2004 Volvo V70R station wagon, lightly modified. Much of the S60R / V70R was developed and engineered prior to the acquisition by Ford, which made the wagon much more desirable to Euro driving enthusiasts. With a 2.5L 5-cylinder turbocharged engine under the hood, AWD, Brembo brakes, and adjustable Ohlins suspension, the second generation V70R is an underrated sleeper with more potential to enlighten your family with adrenaline than the countless number of over-stylized crossovers that would follow in the years to come. Enjoy!

I worked at a Volvo dealer for 9 years. Volvos are the only auto that uses boron steel in the safety cage, the V70 and all volvos can be dropped upside down, or roll down a hill and the roof will not collapse, firefighters cannot cut the door open with the jaws of life, they would hold a class in our showroom teaching firefighters how to get in or around the boron steel in the door. Our dealership was open since 1970 and not one customer had ever lost their life, but we had many shoppers who lost loved ones in the other brands when they traded up. There is not a single car built like the volvos up to about 2010, after that I do not know if they still use boron steel.

Volvo's are such a weird state of cool, especially the 5 cyls of the late 90's and 00's but also the boxy 2-, 7- and 940 models. I own a 945 Turbo myself, and I got hooked off a friend who had a 244 non turbo for years. It's such a classic and innocent looking car, and they drive/ride nicely. The 7- and 940 Turbo's have a huge following here in Europe, mostly Scandinavia (ofc) and they have huge and easy tuning potential, as they run a 2.3 cast iron block, that has been in Volvos since the 544 and Amazon and it's overbuilt, as the rest of the car is. It's such a sturdy, comfortable, reliable and fun car to run around in. Oh and the old Volvos are RWD! Everybody smiles and looks, even old people, moms, youngsters and car guys. Rarely, if ever, do I meet anyone who has something against an old Volvo. They may not love it, but none has anything against it.
When modified both the old 2.3 4cyl and the newer different versions of 5cyl are very cool engines, and the bodylines on most Volvos are iconic and easy to look at. Not very exciting I must say.
Great cars as I hope many more open their eyes about!

Take a stock V70R-M6, tune it well to stage 0-then add a 3" down pipe, Eurosport Tuning sport exhaust, IPD Sway bars, and Kaplhenke Delrin subframe bushings - then you have a really terrific feeling V70R-but don't chip it without re-enforcing the block. Those who do it right can get 450 HP safely out of this engine. Nice to see the enthusiastic review, but comfort mode is not too exciting-the R comes alive in active mode-brake response, throttle response and steering all sharpen - yes-it's a hard ride in active, but to jump into active mode for some quick cornering and then easily switch back to sport for the straight-just so good-this was an incredibly advanced feature for 2004.

No other car on the planet I would rather drive through snow in, it never loses grip. So Ford actually bought Volvo in the late 90s, the last true Volvo was the 850, and the 1998 C/S/V70. Because Ford bought Volvo around that time, Volvo cars started using more electronics, and more importantly different engine management systems. From 1992-1998 all Volvo 850s and the S/V70 used Bosch ECUs which had a mechanical throttle cable. From 1999 onwards all Volvos had drive by wire. Oddly enough the NA cars had Denso ECUs, and the turbo cars had ME7 ECUs. They continued that trend for the whole P2 generation as well.
