  • Is the Volvo S60R really a rival for the BMW M3? Jeremy Clarkson isn't so sure, but can he be pursuaded when the Top Gear boffins turn off the Volvo's traction control and hand the keys to the Stig?

Volvo is one of the most underrated car brands in the world. Many people forget that they made the P1800 and the Bertone bodied coupes.

@@taunokekkonen5733 Well not really. The Volvo P1800 was designed by the very Swedish Pelle Petterson who trained under Pietro Frua, It's still his design although you can totally see the influence from Ghia and Frua cars from the period. When it comes to the Volvo 780 Bertone I'm gonna point out that Jan Wilsgaard was collaborating with Bertone to reach the final design.

I'd have to say SAAB is one of the most underrated cars around. I have 2, a 2005 9-3 2.0T ARC with a mild tune pushing 275 whp, almost the same as the turbo V6 aero model in the line up. My 2009 9-3 is an auto, has zero turbo lag and even stock, it's still fast and most importantly, both have been 100% reliable. But I really do like the inline 5 the Volvo offers. Can't deny that.

And thats why you get the prior year A4 or S4 B5 or RS4 B5. (the B6 S4 doesn't have any flaws so to say, the chain guides issue is on all FSI V8s, A6 C5 and the Facelift models of the A8 D3 2007-2010). The T5 has so many issues, the stupid girdle plate that hold the cams and acts as a valve cover and uses a sealant and that you literally roll on with a paint roller from Volvo, and it doesn't stop crap. The accessory belt has a tendency to get misaligned during heavy loads, and gets sucked into the cam belt behind the crank pully, bending all the valves. The rear heater hoses break from age, and the car overheats, the radio connection for all the modules in the car is fiber optic, and as it ages from vibrations it cracks and is guaranteed to happen on all of them, especially the C70 (Waste many hours testing all the lines to find the break and pull the interior apart to replace the line). The interior of them also don't age well at all unless kept in a garage its whole life. The NVH from the mounting system for the trans and engine is horrendous and feels like a diesel truck, the transmission are built like glass, and limit the torque in 1st and 2nd gear, they will start to slip around 100k to 150k miles with heavy use. The front and rear both suffer from extreme tire wear due to incorrect factory camber that isn't adjustable without buying adjustable arms (this applies to almost all Volvos of the era). I hate working on them.

I'm driving a 2004 S60-R. It is very quick for a four door. I"m not going to race any Subaru WRX's in it, but I'll definitely make a Camaro or a Mustang give me a look as I run bumper to bumper with it. Little rice burners? Not worth my gas. Plus, it has a back seat that will actually hold real humans!
The sixth gear makes it a great cruiser on the highway with 2200 RPM at 70.
BIGGEST issue with is is that there is no such thing as a U-turn. The turning radius on this thing is, and I'm not kidding here, about two miles. Six point turns is the way you switch directions. Parking spaces? Swing w-i-d-e and swing early! And you still might need to back up to get in the space all the way.

(I live in Virginia so an AC is basically essential in the summer) I’m leaning towards the Volvo though. just because who knows how many problems the Highlander will have. It's very fun to drive, and it's always great to see the surprised looks on the faces of muscle car drivers when you stay right by their side at a set of lights. Despite the low ride height, I've found the suspension to be quite nice, and it even handles dirt and gravel roads quite well. The only thing I don't care for is the automatic gearbox. It shifts at the wrong times and randomly decides it wants to downshift into third gear while doing 70 mph on the motorway, so I always have it in sport. Other than that, great car!

EVEN THOUGH, no matter how fast I go, people seem to ALWAYS get right up my ass like I'm a Granny.
