I quit magic and when I restarted someone played a card and said that it was a planeswalker. I replied that I only had mountains and no plains so why'd it matter? It mattered...
casey haha
Old man magic jokes, approved by an old man!
New magic is retarded, everything sucks from the art of the cards, and the new card mechanic is just idiotic
What you mean you didn't have a deck full of counterspells and shocks?! You couldn't generate fifty 0/1 fungus tokens by the fourth turn to match Jace's army of 1/1 salamanders?!
Your dad is so cool for doing this. I don't know if he plays magic or not, but if not, he must really care about you to go online and say things that (to a non-magic player) seem like utter gibberish. It's very brave.
Let him know that I look forward to another video with him in
Your dad is freaking awesome.
Give him Sorin, Lord of Innistrad for Father's Day, the planeswalker that kills planeswalker :P
Garuuk apex predator
I agree! Planeswalkers created an unbalance in MTG. So when I play with friends, we always follow the rule of "only one planeswalker, in a deck". That way, it functions more like a "joker".
This is the best channel, your creativity and knowledge make you one of best, learned so much from you, thanks, omg you would be awesome in spellslingers,
I second this! :)
Ditto!
That would be awesome. I hope Day[9] watches this channel.
Hell yeah!
seismicsmasher I love him!
"One of them had to be banded" lol
I love these videos. It's awesome seeing your dad.
I love the "Old Man" videos. you should defiantly make more of these.
Man nice video with some very good points about both Planeswalkers and the legendary rules.
These videos fill me with such joy.
My goodness! I am enjoying these videos like crazy! Thanks old man.
You should do one of these with him talking about "Interrupts"
I love this series! I used to play back in high school, took a long break, and starting to get back again. So I can relate. Suggested topic: fear
Haha that little behind the scenes part was great!
You have a funny dad! 'If your happy, im happy' was the best line
kindof loses something when we see the outtakes immediately after the short video.
love these.
Just started to see your videos a week ago. I had to look back from the bottom of what you´ve made and catch up. =)
I love this mini-series inside your channel. Your opinions matter a lot to me Proffesor and the fact you´re puttin them out trough a wise elder person put emphasis on what most players agree with, just in this case sound powerful when you are hearing it from a person like your dad. Maybe he doesn´t know a thing about Magic but it force me to shut up my toughts and listen to something I could easily ignore if its coming from a person of my age. Great aproach! Greetings from Cozumel Island, Mexico.
Professor, this stuff is hilarious! The outtakes really make the videos.
I gotta tell ya professor, this is it! This type of content has me engaged with the channel! Haha this character is saying all that I've been thinking for the past couple of months. I started playing in 99, second grade!! And to see all the changes... the legend rule, the mana burn, ugh! (lol, am I the old man?) I love these video (and all the rest)
This reminds me a lot of my friend that went to Fate Reforged prerelease with me. He and I started playing at around the same time and I rolled with the punches...he's still stuck in the past. This is good stuff, sir.
"Elspeth can make soldiers, that she then orders to attack her self!"
hooray for 40k! :D
I'm nearly that old. I was 28 when Magic started... :(
"Pfffbpfpfbpfbpfbfp!!! I DON'T LIKE PLANESWALKER CARDS!" - sums up my thoughts perfectly. I came back to Magic and saw these and was thoroughly confused. Like, "Okay, I'm a Planeswalker in-game. I control lands and tap them for power, cast amazing spells, and summon mythical creatures and bind them to my will. Sure, no problem. But now I can summon another Planeswalker and bind ~them~ to my will, presumably a being close to my own power level? WTF kind of sense does that make?!" Lore strangeness aside, they also add more corner-case rule issues, and most importantly are kill-this-immediately-or-lose cards more than any other type.
Now the Legend rule, that change is fine by me. I'll agree that it makes no sense in a lore/flavor view. But from a gameplay perspective it was damn stupid that you could be prevented from playing a card just because an opponent played it first, so I'm they changed it.
I think, this may not be true, but they have "loyalty" counters, so maybe they're just allies with you?
I see it less a binding and more as cooperation. These planeswalkers are your "friends", and come to your aid in battle. They will follow your orders as long as you don't betray their loyalty (i.e. let them get hurt to much). Then they'll leave the battle having gotten pissed at you.
I only need to mention Lin Sivvi and people know why the old legend rule was bad for the game. The last legend rule was quite good flavor-wise though almost like they switched side. The current legend rule sure it allows all players to have an Emrakul each. One could say it's good for the game but it's also detrimental in some ways. Let's take the same scenario through all three legend rules.
My opponent cast Griselbrand, while he's on the stack I flash in my Griselbrand, my Griselbrand resolves first, enters the battlefield his Griselbrand resolves and is immediately dead, as there is already a copy in-game.
My Opponent cast Griselbrand, while he's on the stack I flash in my Griselbrand, my Griselbrand resolves first, enters the battlefield, then his Griselbrand resolves and enters the battlefield and mine is automatically sacrificed.
My opponent cast Griselbrand, while he's on the stack I flash in my Griselbrand, my Griselbrand resolves first, enters the battlefield, then his Griselbrand resolves and enters the battlefield and nothing else happens.
Sure Griselbrand didn't exist when the first legends rule existed, but it was an example. As you can see, The first rule protected the first legendary and the second rule protected the second one, while the third still makes sure that the first legendary played has an advantage while the second one can be played, without disrupting the games flow. There are disadvantages with all of them.
It's less binding them more striking a temporary pact. Abilities that add loyalty are abilities that make the planeswalker become more fond of you as an ally, while the abilities that subtract loyalty are ones that slowly (or very quickly) make them hate your guts or grow tired/bored/etc. Sure, Nicol Bolas could end you with a snap of his fingers, but how can he resist your offer of allying to blow shit up? However, the second those loyalty counters hit zero and he stops having fun, he's outta there.
You don't “bind a planeswalker to your will“. They simply owe you,a favor (for whatever reason) and you're cashing that favour in. Which is why they have Loyalty Counters instead of something like life points - if they think you're more trouble than they owe you, they're outta there.
These are all very good points.
Having had to face down many planeswalker cards from opponents during the first two months of ever playing Magic including a deck a guy had that ran 4 different planeswalkers, it's especially brutal.
A Planeswalker-free Standard would be very interesting to see and play in.
I was browsing to see if ya had a FAB playlist, and I came across this gem of a playlist!
Hey professor! I have an idea for a review video. How about reviewing some MTG apps? Life tracking apps, deck building apps, card browsing apps, etc. I personally would be interested in what your favorite life tracking app is!
Great video BTW. I love that old man! I remember after watching the first video I did the math in my head. If he was 18 (in highschool as the video states he was) when MTG came out in '93 then that would make him about 39 now. No way is that old man only 39! Lol, I know better now after watching the outtakes. Keep up the great work!
These videos are a treat! Brings me back to my magic-youth-self :) Thing where truly back then or maybe one just enjoyed the game more as a kid. I believe in the former!
Wow, what's it like to have a loving and supportive parent? I'm just blown away!! I do feel there should be a rule that only one planeswalker should be allowed in the deck. You should only have a 1 in 60 chance per game to get him out! It would also make them more economically feasible, who can afford 4 Jace the Mind Sulpter or Liliana of the Veil
Hey really enjoying the new segment. These are hilarious. Could you please make a video talking about the new format Tiny Leaders. Wedge made a quick intro, but I would like to see something from you as well. Or please talk about it in Episode 2 of Dies to Removal! Thanks!
hahaha! Yooo, this is hilarious lol. I love how well your dad delivers these :)
Your pops is great man. What a sport.
I have a new respect for actors after seeing the outtakes.
Your dad makes me laugh like no one else!
Your dad is super engaging to watch!
Love these rants!
This guy just... Gets me.
Despite the hate, I miss old magic. #BringBackManaBurn
You guys need to make a video about the "restricted list!" That would make my day! :)
I thought each player was playing the role of a Plainswalker, as portrayed in the novel Magic the Gathering: Arena (got the book and cards - Arena & Sewers of Estark)... so happy I kept all my vintage unlimited and revised cards from college (93-97).
best series on yt i know your dad will come soon to you hope he will do some more XDD
Hello professor, i just got into magic when kahns of tarkir came out and I chose abzan. i watched your videos but i never saw a video about deckbuilding for standard or modern.
This series should be called "Old Man Hates on New Magic".
:P
These are amazing! :D
Loved the end :D One of the best fathers out there :D
your dad is a Natural, this was great
this old man is me...lol.
Old Man for President!
Seriously, your dad is great! :) Awesome man!
Looking forward to "An old man remembers Interrupts"
"Nailed it... wanna do one more?"
Did a New York style standard game the other day... Biggest decks I've ever seen popped up
Your dad is awesome! Keep the videos coming!
Your dad es amazing! I love your videos, keep the good work.
This video is just so funny and it actually makes a point about planeswalkers!
these rants are hilarious! top notch acting...
My favorite part is 3:00! HAHAHAH! "If you are happy, I'm happy"!
Honestly, your father is awesome!!
I love this videos hahahaha
0:11 beatbox master in da place !!! xD
Best intro EVAR!!
thumbs up for dads willing to do anything for there kids :)
I love that the way he says, "there's was just nothing to do, but just sit there, and the Planeswalker would just GROW..and be a big problem....." XDXD
YESS! My thoughts on the Legendary rule have been heard! :D
Hey, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the recent ban list? Maybe a video on it?
While I like Planeswalkers as a card type (neat fonts of flexibility), and I enjoy the opportunity for story telling they've opened up, I do think there may be a bit of... saturation. Or at least overlap.
If we're going to continue to get a relatively constant stream of Planeswalkers, I really hope the creative team at Wizards takes the time to give them legitimate impact on the lore and a place in it. And on a similar note, try to give all the abilities individuality, but with an overarching theme, that flavor both each other and the Walker. Don't just swap Jace's hairstyle for another Final Fantasy wig, shuffle his various "draw and/or mill and/or ponder" effects around, slap on a new title and call it a day. Look at Ugin, he's got great impact and flavor in the lore (master of colorless mana), cohesive effects that fit his character (ghostfire and the anti-Bolas), and while familiar to lore fans, he's still cool enough on his own to keep people interested.
If you can't think of another substantial update to an existing Walker, make a new one! There's plenty of neat interactions you can do with the various colors. An example I've always been fond of was a red Walker who, in the lore, spent most of his life studying runic red magics from various tomes he's gathered on his travels. Thus, many of his abilities involve interaction with your library (You know, books.), such as milling 3, then dealing damage equal to the combined CMC of the 3 milled cards. I'm not professing to be an R&D expert, but I think the idea's neat, it combines the burning and chaotic flavor of red with library interaction for a neat twist (yes I know it's been done with red before, but not ad nauseam).
And here's the kicker: *I'm not a professional designer/writer.* This was just something I came up with off the top of my head. If *I*, a lowly nerdling, can drop an idea of moderate competence with moderate ease, I find it hard to believe Magic R&D (the group that is so good at this they do it for a living) is running out of ideas any time soon. Just keep it varied guys. Planeswalkers are a good thing, but like any good thing, too much can be more of a bane than a boon.
If you actually made it to the end of this miniature essay, props. Feel free to comment & debate. Its the reason this section's here, after all.
luv these! You should do a point-counterpoint with the old man vs a 12 yr old.
The legend rule's back, so he should be happy now
your dad is awesome more videos of him please
i love this series
coolest dad ever
he did a good plane impersonation somewhere near the start
I love your pop's!
You guys are the BEST.
Still great to watch.
The intro is hilarious
Yes! Can we talk about how being unthematic being able to play a planeswalker is? I, who is somebody playing as an unnamed planeswalker, summons a planeswalker to make the game less interesting! I think the use of planeswalkers could have changed the game drastically in a much better way. I would have used them as a special player power. You play AS a planeswalker, which changes and synergizes with your deck. Sorta like Commander, but more like the Runners/Corps in Netrunner.
Oh, wait, you don't know what Netrunner is? BWAHAHAHAHAH!!!
Love this episodes :D
"if you're happy than I'm happy" your Dad is awesome!
These are great!
Love, the old man hates videos are hilarious! :P
I do agree about the legends rule. It's kind of destroys the fantasy when gideon is fighting gideon. I think we should bring back the old legends rule when if two appear at the same time, they both are placed in the GY.
I think complaining about the new legend rule is just a lame excuse to complain about change.
There are plenty of things that sacrifice the fantasy atmosphere for the sake of mechanics. It's simply impossible NOT to do if you want to make a good game.
I think you guys mean the planeswalker rule, which is unique from the legend rule. also, there has never been a planeswalker rule saying that each player can't have a planeswalker that shares a type with one an opponent controls as long as I've played since 2010
it actually does, because YOU summoned them, tbh. Sure they may reference the past history of the world, but they are in the end magic beings created by you, hence why they are considered "spells" you "cast" (*not* living beings you recruit, or buy services from) and thus they obey you. Planeswalkers on the other hand are...a player's equal. They don't have life, but loyalty, in fact. They help you as long as they want, which for strictly gameplay reasons is linked ingame to how much damage they take rather than whether they even believe in your "cause". It definitely makes little sense, particularly when they attack themselves as he brought up.
Naturally, this is all done becuase making the game fun is a priority over something that make sense, but they DO ruin the lore if we're being honest.
But beside all that, the real reason most hate planeswalkers is just that they are "remove this right now or you lose" cards - they're not the first such cards in magic, ofc, but they are just more powerful and harder to interact with/remove than your average non-planeswalker cards of the same strategic value, and especially over powered in draft.
"If your happy I'm happy"
The feelz :,)
hi guys im still pretty new to magic the gathering and thankfully i got some loved ones to start playing as well.
what i would like to do is for all of us to do our own sealed play game. the problem is i dont know how to get started.
my main concern is how many booster packs of each expansion should we each get? there would be a max of 4 of us playing at once.
do we all buy 6 packs of fate reforge? or do we mix in any pack that is legal in standard play. i would prefer 2015 coreset and later if this is the case.
which mixture of booster packs would be the best possible chance to get the best possible pool of cards(usefullness and fun) for us new players.
If you're happy, I'm happy. Your Dad seems pretty awesome. :)
This one is great
Hey professor, Why don't you made a video about the Duels of The Palneswalkers avaliable at the steam?
Jesus, my friends have 2 planeswalker each and i feel the struggle having to deal with this annoying cards. They dont seem to fit in the game, i almost feel the obligation to buy one so i can have "equal" conditions to win the game. And by the way, your dad is a cool old man! Cheers
You guys are awesome!
I also agree with Planeswalkers being a huge problem. As much as I like to play them, they change so much!
The new Legend rule also doesn't really make ense, now. How are there so many of the same planeswalker?
But I guess this is now the multiverse we live in.
Can you provide a link to the Mike Fields rant you referenced at the end of the video. I would love to read that.
Your dad is amazing. My dad says "if you're happy i'm happy" all the time... but I could never get him to participate in something like this. Love the channel and love this series.
Lol love these "Old Man" vids :P Magic The Gathering just wait what it use to be.
"If you're happy, I'm happy." Good dad
I think your Dad could he an actor or narrator. (If he isn't already) Bravo, bravo!
what a wonderful voice
Yeah..... the Legendary change may be more "fun," but it makes absolutely no sense.
Old rules were more fun because clone could kill Thrun and Giest.
It's not more "fun," but more balanced/fair. Penalizing the person who played something first/second made no sense..
Yeah, I always thought it would be cool to remove the enemy's Polukranos by playing a Polukranos of my own... but then I learned the legend rule doesn't work that way :(
From the way i was taught about magic, when we are playing our spells as planeswalkers we arent really summoning the actual people but really making copies out of our mana that act as they would. which makes complete sense because why would something like a sliver overlord follow the orders of a planeswalker (you), They wouldn't! So it makes perfect sense and i thought it was a good thing for the game making clone builds not as effective.
Gratefulguitars Yes, we make copies of them, but why wouldn't a Sliver Overlord follow our orders? Back in the day we were Gods in all but name, now we are something less, but still something more, more than the puny mind of a mortal creature could handle..
As for the Planeswalkers, or "buddies," that we summon, that gets a little ambiguous as far as if they are clones, ideas, or actual Walkers. I think Wizards says that they are real Walkers, but that they don't expend all of their power, just however much they feel like helping you.. That's where the loyalty comes in. What's to say the Walker doesn't want to help both you and the opponent? The Walker we summon is probably a manifestation/extension of them, not their actual corporeal form, potentially.. :S
PLEASE DO MORE RANTS! So many people have stuff to complain about and this guy hits a lot of good points
"If you're happy, I'm happy". Haha, I say that all the time.
This gentleman is 80?! That's some genetics you have! Insane!
totally agree! Planeswalkers was a bad idea!
Yeah, I hate the new Legend Rule too. There really should be only one and the Legend Rule should be the same for Planeswalkers: Only one Planeswalker of any one type should be on the field between players at any one time.
wait I thought chandra was on my side? why is she attacking my troopers? oh the new legend rule? sounds dumb
I've got bad news for you...
It was pretty dumb how clones were removal though. Blue destroying things as easily as black? Nah. Or back in Kamigawa playing umezawas jitte simply to destroy their umezawas jitte.
And now you can have múltiple jaces at the same time, what a wonderful time to play yu-gi-oh (i Guess? Idk)
So what exactly is call blade? I know it has something to do with the Jace and Stoneforge Mystic decks.
It's "Caw Blade." Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Stoneforge, Sword of Feast and Famine/Fire and Ice (the "Blades" of Caw Blade), Batterskull, and Squadron Hawks (the "Caw" in Caw Blade). The rest of the deck would be the best countermagic and white removal available in the format.
It's called Caw Blade;
Beside Jace and Stoneforge the deck use different swords, squadron hawk as a sword vector, and cheap deck manipulation & control (like preordain and mental misstep)
I LOVE this guy!!
Professor would you ever consider making a video with Wedge about the direction Wizards has taken the Lore since the Mending? Ive read the books since back in the beginning and was a fan of the lore but i find Magic has lost its charm to me in terms of story....and i hate the fact that Jace is sort of the "new" Urza with the amount of focus they put on him.
Anyway id love to hear your thoughts on the matter and Wedge aswell.
Love the videos keep up the great work!
I played Jace Beleren in my deck to get rid of my friend's Mind Sculptors. xD
