It makes more sense for Harry to not see thestrals in the books than the films, at least prior to Cedric's death. In the book of Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone, he passed out before seeing Quirrell die, whereas in the film, he clearly sees him die, so he should have seen the thestrals afterwards.
You forgot uhm his parents
I agree honestly since if we are going with book logic then yeah he didn't see Quirrell die since he passed out (and was told later that Quirrell died) where as in the film logic (since the films did change things) he did see both Quirrell and Cedric died (so likely saw the thestrals from both of them since with his parents he was too young) so technically speaking in both forms he could of saw them sooner (depending which media you want to use)
Not to mention he was right there when Voldemort killed Lilly. This should be a universal rule independent of if the person has memory or self awareness, if someone died within your field of vision, it should count.
@@Akatsukileader9but again, I think this is more a movie thing than a book thing. It’s been a while, but I don’t know if the book explicitly says Harry was facing and looking at Lily when she’s killed. He’s in the room, but as he was a very young toddler (15 months old), he may not have been looking in her direction. Yes, it’s a cop-out as to why he didn’t see thestrals since Day 1 at Hogwarts (or at least by his third year when he took the horseless carriages), and I’m not saying it’s right, but as a mom of three, it’s true that young toddlers aren’t always looking at the direction of the most action. Still, Harry should have seen the thestrals after Cedric’s death. There’s no reason for them to wait to appear to him in Year Five other than the author didn’t have it fully planned, or at least didn’t plan it well enough.

Pretty sure Dumbledore wasn't worried about splitting Snape's soul because it wasn't going to be an act of malice, and would therefore not split his soul.
Yeah, it was a merciful death before the curse on the ring gets the chance to give him much more painful death.
Yeah, it was more like putting a pet down. It, like the reply above me said, was a mercy kill, so Snape's soul was safe.
There's also an argument that Snape was an adult whose life was already irreparably destroyed by the loss of Lily, while Draco was still a kid with his whole life ahead of him.
i think Snape had to kill in the first place in order to be take the dark mark tho i'm not sure this is confirmed anywhere

I like to think the "let it sink in" as in Harry was still in heavy denial, not accepting Cedric had died.
I would argue that a ghost may or may not be able to see thestrals, at least when it comes to their own death: you must witness it and then come to terms with/accept it, but a ghost is made when a witch or wizard can not accept death and remain. I'd say it could go either way.
I think since thestrals and ghosts are one and the same in death, they can likely see each other.
that's interesting because there are loads of ghosts in Hogwarts. so it would make sense for ghosts to see Thestrals.
That brings up an interesting brain teaser if being able to see Thestrals is dependent on “seeing” death and Hogwarts is full of ghosts shouldn’t most of the students and staff already be able to see Thestrals if they hadn’t before they came to school since ghosts are one of the few physical remnants of death that exist in the Wizarding world?
@@krisynthiagomez5883 they didn't witness the deaths. You have to see it happen, and your brain has to process and realize somebody died in front of you. Otherwise, almost everybody who attends a funeral would see thestrals.
Question: What if you believe someone died right in front of you without actually dying? If you never find out that this person is actually alive, would you still be able to see thestrals then?
Answer: Well I think that must count. You will possibly able to see Thestrals if the thought of a person's death has been accepted by you. The reason is--- Harry denied Cedric's death at the end of book 4 and he could not see at that point(Rowling confirmed this)
So.........If a person cannot see thestrals because he or she denied it even if he or she saw it, the opposite can also happen i.e. A person CAN see thestrals if they accepeted the death of a person though he or she is not dead

For J.K Rowling's explanations, the one about Harry being a baby makes sense. As for the second one, I think it's that Harry COULD see them at the end of his 4th year, but he didn't give it any mind at the time because he was too preoccupied with not just Cedric's death but also Voldemort's return.
As the late Queen of England used to say to unsuspecting tourists asking if she knew the Queen; she had never met the Queen, but her bodyguard knew her quite well. I support the idea that you cannot witness your own death.

I Would also say, That even though 2 of the three Peverell brother litterally Saw someone die, they all three encountered “DEATH” and were therefore allowed to see thestrals. You could argue that Frank and Alice Longbottom might have witnessed someone die during their careers as aurors, but that would just be speculation, so I agree with not putting it in as canon
Most Aurors can see Thestrals. Unless you just started out as an Auror, you'd have had to kill in self defense. Comes with the job

When Peter killed the 12 muggles, clearly the ministry would have the brains of the muggles who witnessed in the event altered. I wonder if they could still see thestrals even if the memory is altered. I feel like it's definitely possible as though witnessing death does something to your brain or person that can never be undone

I just wanna say that this is one of those things I appreciate of thw writer, a world those who witnessed dead can only see, truly a magic world indeed.
This is also something I wish could be explored more, because not just a thestral horse, but what about more animals? Places, items, lore... This could be very interesting and definitely appeal to the niche of gothics and dark loving mages without necessarily being evil.

@@ManavJith about 20 times. Mostly actually read although I have listened to the audio books a couple times. I am currently listening to the audio books read by Stephan Fry which is the guy that did them in the UK. In the US it was Jim Dale. I never actually cared for Jim Dale’s voice i dont know why. It’s nothing against him, he is talented with all the voices he does it is just something with some of his word fluctuations that i find jarring. So I was very happy that the Stephen Fry option is finally available in the US. I am a huge fan of the books and rarely watch the movies anymore. I have taken to listening to the books instead of watching.

the basilisk is what killed myrtle
@linexi you don't have to be the killer to see thestrals (otherwise Harry wouldn't have seen them after Cedric's death), even if the basilisk is what actually killed Myrtle, seeing it still counts
@@linexi harry didn’t kill Cedric nor Luna with her mother and so on with other characters but was able to see the thestrals so I don’t think you have to be the one to kill the person just be a witness to the act and also be of a age where death is understood

I think ghost should see thestrals. They witnessed their own death. And some probably didn’t die immediately like Sir Nickils and most likely Helna Ravenclaw. And ghost probably knew they were gonna die before death. So yes I think ghosts can see thestrals.
But you have to see death and then process it. So since they don't see their own death they can't process it after. The fact that harry didn't see thestrals until 5th year proves that ghosts wouldn't.
