    The trade off of the Li-ion chemistries (LFP, NMC, NCA) are pretty interesting.
    LFP is nice for being cheap due the the relative abundance of its raw materials compared to other chemistries. It also generally has significantly improved cycle lives, surviving roughly twice as many cycles.
    NMC and NCA are more expensive with lower cycle lives, but have significantly higher energy densities (in terms of energy per unit volume and energy per unit mass) than LFP. That's why Tesla is segmenting its use of the different chemistries. NMC makes for a denser pack for the long-range vehicles while LFP makes for a cheaper and longer-lasting pack for the standard range vehicles. Tesla even analyzed which battery chemistries should be used for what cases (even talking about ships and planes and the like) with their Master Plan Part 3.

    Love LFP batteries for 4 reasons:
    1. You can always charge it to 100%
    2. So, you are not carrying around deadweight that you can’t or shouldn’t use for fear of battery degradation.
    3. Zero chance of catching on fire.

    4680 physical volume is 5.48 times more than 2170 volume. Hence energy density remains the same (providing, they claim "4680 has as 5X Energy and 6X Power much as 2170"). So, where's the increase?

    Even though the 4680 has 5 times more energy, it’s volume is also 5 times bigger. So the current production that we see in actual cars, the energy in the pack is still the same, just with less (but bigger) battery cells.

    you bring up a good point. we have power generators now. but we dont have many companies that store the power.

  • @donaldduck5731
    @donaldduck5731 Před rokem +2

    CATL and AMPRIUS are on the cusp of manufacturing 500Wh/kg batteries at reasonably high volume, where that leaves Tesla’s 4680 is anyone’s guess. We really have some new battery technologies just around the corner which will give EVs the same, if not more range than ICE cars, if full capacity of these new batteries bought up by Tesla then they will be sold to VW, NEO, FISKER and POLESTAR, potentially making Tesla’s cars inferior to their competitors. So as as much as Tesla wants to keep everything in house, buying CATL, BYD and AMPRIUS batteries denies Tesla’s competitors these very same batteries and allows for Tesla to gain a greater market share long term.

    • @dombaker1924
      @dombaker1924 Před rokem +1

      Completely agree. Gotion are another company due to produce 500wh/kg batteries in 2024 and supply a majority of them to VW. Battery tech is rapidly evolving and it seems that the 4860 will be obsolete before it really got started.

Better specs (17KWH vs 13KWH), less expensive and they would actually commit to a deliver and install date. Also, Generac actually has a customer service number that answers the phone reliably. Thus far, very happy with it.

      It would be too complicated and impractical, if you google the total weight of a model 3, it is half a ton.
      I don’t think anyone will be swapping 250kgs of battery whenever they reach the station. There are also multiple EV brands too so how are going to cater for that?
      Also, I believe the battery pack is part of the structure of the car to minimise manufacturing costs and to increase cell count. Having it removable would remove those benefits.

    I volunteer to have someone in a Cybertruck pull my travel trailer from Michigan to Florida for my winter stay. It is bumper pull so it should be very easy for any truck. It only weighs 15000 pounds, and is 8 1/2 feet wide with a height of 12' 10". It was built to minimize aero drag so another easy thing for the Cybertruck. My Dodge ram has pulled that trailer North to south round trip 13 times and east to west round trip three times, with lots of travel as well. Just 74,000 miles towing. I won't even put all the things I carry in the truck in the Cybertruck. Just 96 cubic feet of fairly heavy stuff, about 2500 pounds more or less. That we can do in the late fall of 2024 with a true production vehicle. Should be a piece of cake. I am only running about 450 to 500 hp and 1200 pound feet of torque. Fall of 2025 we will add the fishing equipment box and the cartop boat to the mix. Trip will be a bit longer as I need to go to South Dakota first then on to Florida.

  • @danfarrand9072

    I've read in other places, that energy density in the 4680 Gen 1 is actually not any better than the old battery although they hope to improve it's performance as time goes by. This suggests that AT BEST cybertruck will only meet it's original range specs, which for myself, puts a shadow over a CT purchase. I'm far enough down the wait list that I will have time to decide when the actual specs get released. Today 3 years after the CT announcement, 600 mile range is my minimum. 500 miles will just not do it for me. I don't want a toy, I want a genuine , all purpose transport and utility vehicle - all weather, all conditions.

    I appreciate the update but the promo /commercial at 3:50ish makes it clear that y'all are compromised so much that I'm going to take anything you "report" with a huge grain of salt. you've identified a market, which is to say people who are/maybe interested in your take on what is happening with Tesla. but your undisguised craven adherence to those that are paying you ... well, not that different from Tesla, which is to say Elon
    I want a future with EVs and our power coming from renewable sources. but I am not seeing any commitment to that from you, just figuring that you can ride that slipstream.
