  • For a one watch collection, you need a piece that can do it all.
For a two watch collection, you'll want two very different watches.
For a three watch collection, you can do something fancy, something sporty, and something in between.
For a four or five watch collection, you'll need to watch until the end of the video!
What's your strategy for building a watch collection? And what are the core watches in your lineup? Drop a comment with your favorites.

Would get a cartier tank and a patek calatrava instead of jlc and ap, if staying with the 2 rolex situation one could be bland like op or dj but the second one could be more interesting like a gmt explorer or day date

@@toddpower4674 Plus there’s talk they might discontinue the model due to production problems with the bezel. I have a hard time believing they are going to discontinue one of the most popular models, but it would give them an opportunity to bring the Coke back into the catalog, and then reintroduce the Pepsi in a few years, if they can figure out the bezel problem.

I find that my excitement for new watches diminishes greatly with the more I have. So I use a four watch collection that is pretty dang close to what you mentioned. The main difference being that my fourth watch is a beater that I can wear knowing it will likely get damaged. I have found that these four watches give me endless joy, especially since I can make them all as somber or funky as I want with an extensive strap collection.
    Do everything: Datejust
    Sport: Speedy.
    Dress: Tank.
    Beater: SKX.
The only other watch I find myself missing is my old 5513, so I guess if I ever went to a five watch collection a no-date Sub would be my happy watch.

Extreme structure is the only thing that keeps me honest and my only defense against unreasonable/random overspending. I do one watch per brand:
    1. Dress
    2. Wildcard ( currently vintage/birthyear)

    4. Chrono
    5. Diver

love the turn-o-graph. I almost got one years and years ago... I bought a yacht-master instead. S/S with the platinum bezel. Do you think its fits the same role as the turn-o-graph, or is it more sporty since it resembles a submariner?

Good question. It's all a matter of degree, and since the YM has a more prominent bezel and diver-style dial, I'd say it's sportier than the Turn-O-Graph by comparison.

Great video. But sorry buddy, the word collection means plural. One watch us just a watch, two is a pair and three curated watches are where a collection starts. This IS the accepted definition.
That being said I was a "one" watch guy for 30+ years ['83-'15], a Rolex GMT 16750 [as an international military, corporate and airline pilot].
I added a Speedmaster in 2018 and a Reverso in 2019 [my first Chrono24 purchase]. This is when I became a collector. In Dec. '19 I added a Steel Sky Dweller [my retirement watch] and in '20 a Submariner 114060 and finally a gold PF Tonda 1950. My perfect six watch collection.

There's no perfect watch collection. It depends on budget. But for me...
1 watch collection: Rolex Yacht Master 40. Sports watch, but elegant enough for formal wear. Practical, time, date, rotating bezel, adjustable oyster bracelet.
2 watch collection: above + Aquanaut for the lightweight casual luxury chic
3 watch collection: above + Royal Oak for the ultimate sports luxury watch and essence of all the watches derived from Gerald Genta
4 watch collection: above + 321 Speedmaster the most iconic chronograph with a movement to die for, that does not cost 6 figures.
5 watch collection: above + Tudor Black bay 58. A watch that looks vintage, but doesn't have vintage watch issues like poor time keeping or lack of water resistance. Most importantly, we all need a watch that we know is safe to wear and low key when traveling abroad.

In my personal experience, as you start to build a collection, a GADA watch makes less and less sense. While my Zenith El Primero Espada was my go-to watch for years, at a later point in time I ended up wearing always something else - something sportier, dressier, more utilitarian, etc. Coming to which, I agree 99% to your collecting principles with only one addition - a "beater". Probably cheaper than the rest of your collection, but something you don't have to pamper whilst in salty water or when playing with your kids.

If you want a current Rolex as a GADA, the YM40 is that sweet spot for going to a wedding, and jumping into the ocean on the same day (just don't go diving with it). In terms of a 5 watch collection, I have a YM40 (Blue), Cartier Santos Medium (Steel), Tudor FXD (MN Blue), and an assortment of cheaper rotating watches as the "4th watch". I like combo's for travel, so the YM40 + FXD paired make a great vacation setup, or the Santos with quick change straps for work trips, or if I go to a wedding/formal function and want to change straps on that trip. The "4th watch" for me eventually will settle to be a chronograph, ideally a black dial, perhaps IWC. Then the "5th watch" will be the rotating G-Shock or similar quartz.
