I've had my 2020 BMW S1000RR for about two weeks now. I keep getting messages and comments telling me that my bike has been recalled and production has stopped. Yet, BMW hasn't notified me of anything and nothing shows for my VIN. So what's going on? And what other issues have I experienced with the new S1000RR? Let's chat about some problems!

Can't wait for Motonosity's "First ticket on the S1000RR" video, LOL
people tend to push for new hyped bikes to fail because they want their own bikes to shine longer. there are no recalls is North America yet. only a couple bikes in Europe got some little issues. I've had mine for over 2 months now and the bike is flawless. I don't expect a new bike to have no issues at all during it's life span that would be wishful thinking. The bike is a major hit right now and the MSport bikes are such a good deal people bought them out. This happened back in 2010 when they launched the first bike they sold out in 1 month.
So I wouldn't listen to all those negative people just looking for problems and issues all they look for is the new S1K to fail so they will say just about anything.
The only issue I have seen with my mechanics is the maps are so restricted out of the box tuning will make this bike a brutal monster we have seen 60% less throttle in 3 gears. we expect the bike to get over 210 kph and over 90 foot pounds when all said and done. remember dyno's are a tuning tool and figures will vary from one to another and even the same dyne will give different numbers depending on humidity heat and all the rest of atmospheric pressure.
Just enjoy the bike and I do expect Bmw to issue a recall or a map fix soon pretty much every bike gets one at some point. One thing for sure it will never be as bad as Ducati's bikes they all pretty much get 5 recalls upon launch...lol
Don't put an exhaust on the S1K before tuning is available for it you will hurt the engine we have seen with the Akra full exhaust 15 AFR's right in the middle of the RPM's in 3-5 gear that is danger lean. Don't get over exited let the tuning guru's figure the maps out and then do it right with all is tested and trued. keep the bike as is all summer when all is R&D'ed go at it I know the you tubers want those likes and views but killing a 23K bike is not worth it.
This comment does not deserve to be overlooked.
Really appreciate the thorough comment man! As someone that's now owned 3 bikes from the initial model year, I get so many comments telling me "You should NEVER buy the first year of a new generation!" and while there is SOME truth to that claim, it's far overblown in my personal experience. Yes, manufacturers iron out some initial issues that arise, but *rarely* are they deal-breaker issues and they often to take years to actually get resolved in a new release. By that time, there's the chance that new issues have been introduced as well.
My 2009 R1 (first year of that gen) had zero issues. I want to say the only recall was a potentially loose headlight mount that they took 3 years to fix. Mine never even developed the issue.
My 2017 R6 only had the cold start issue, which in all honestly was a completely minor issue, fixed with a flash, that was no reason to skip over the launch year.
At the end of the day, just gotta weigh what's important to you and how risk averse you are. For me, getting to experience being one of the first to own one of these incredible machines was worth any potential issues. It's not like any bikes these days are seeing catastrophic failures that completely stop production to the level of, say, the Samsung Note 7 debacle. I can deal with a finicky throttle mapping lol.
/ramblerant
@@motonosity exactly most of the negatives come from people that will never own one or can't afford one it's the same each year for each bike.
people have got to stop trying to bring down every thing and everyone around them when things go well. We are surrounded by negativity. Bikes in 2019 are so good it doesn't really matter what you ride it comes down to how you feel sitting on it. Just be happy to even have the chance to get a 20K+ bike as so many are having trouble just feeding themselves.
Great comment! S1krr is an incredible machine and a couple potential hiccups just need to be approached with patience.
« only a couple bikes in Europe « ? they recall all bmw from 2 country already …
I worked for a bmw dealer years ago. a man came in for service of his 1970s bike. I was the service writer. It had 435,000 original miles without no major teardowns. He put 1 clutch in it, thats all. My jaw dropped
Looks like such a fun and smooth motorcycle.
Wouldn’t stress about it, you have one of the sexiest bikes out there
THE sexiest bike out there
Best inline 4 bike on the planet
Yep.
V4S is on par in the sexiness but it DOES have some serious recall issues.
love the new s1000RR love the vids hope to catch you riding on the Austin highways and keep up the great content !
BMW has a 40% "failure rate" within the first 4 years of being purchased - meaning that 2/5ths of their bikes require some sort of mechanical repair outside of normal service. Not too surprising that they already have recalls. Incredible engineering and amazing bikes, but their QC seems lacking.
@Michael RedCrow With all things there is a bit of give and take. Not all Ducati and BMW motorcycles are unreliable, with some models being really damn good, and others being a nightmare. Harley got the unreliable reputation during the AMF years, and with good reason. Most new Harleys are actually very reliable, but again it can depend on the model, or if the owner ignores the critical fastener checks in the service schedule lol.
Yeah but that Survey where BMW got this supposed failure rate 40% was based on only something like 1000 motorbikes across multiple brands that were over 4 years old. How many were BMWs out if the 1000 bikes? 50? 75? No one knows. But BMW sells the highest amount of Adventure bikes in europe which means lots of high mileage bikes. Not low mileage weekend toys. It’s not true that BMWs are more unreliable. And I don’t own a BMW so I’m not biased just trying to add some realism to the data.
At least you have one. Every where I go is back oredered like 4 shippments
Really you just got this bike!!! Wow!!!
recall talk starts @ 3:46
Beautiful bike, you really earned it! Been following you for a couple of years now and it's really nice to see you ride your dream bike. Hope it is what you hoped it would be. Do you have some mods lined up for the bike or keeping it stock for now?
I love your videos man! Plus, Thank you for making content that utilizes all of my screen!👌 I know is such a wired thing to say but with a 18:9 screen ratio, not all of my screen is used by most CZcams videos. #FirstWorldProblems...
I am not sure but a possibilty for the throttle issue can be the variable cam technology. At around 6k revs the s1000rr changes to its bigger cams so it may feel like a sudden boost or that the lower revs feel slow.
There's always haters when new, better bikes are released. Brand new bikes always have some issues when they are released, it's a given. My 2015 R1 had to have the complete transmission changed as a precaution. Keep the videos coming!
340 bikes have had the recall, and most of them didnt make it to the customers. Those who did receive the bikes that were made with the faulty machine have had a notice from the dealer who sold them the bike and BMW sorted them with a new engine, ive done 1200miles on mine here in norway, and it is amazing. love the content, i have been following you since you had the R1, had a 2009 model myself, thats how i stumbled upon this channel. cant wait to see the mods you do to the bike, keep it coming.
regards from Norway.
Cant wait till break in is finished
I think with any car or motorcycle there's a trade-off in a number of categories. Any car or bike that pushes the limit of what's possible in one or more categories will inevitably experience issues from time to time, sometimes promoting a recall. It happens. I think it just boils down to a personal choice of whether or not you might want to have to deal with something like that.
I honestly never go for the first wave of new bikes (and guns) that come out. There is alway growing pains...
Do a Austin Racing exhaust for the bike, check out Royal Jordanian’s s1000r with the AR looks and sounds amazing!
This is too random. If i wanted to go from gear 4 to 1 (from a red light or something) would I have to rev match in each gear i go down in? Or can I just go to 1 (with the clutch in all the way) and just rev match once at the end?
Maybe you've announced and I just missed it, but what the hell happened to the 240
I miss it
Is that lag in power not a result if the limiter that they have for the break in? My 19 had the same issue into after I got the service and the limiter removed.
I’m waiting for my C400GT recall too ; ;
1st Gen thing..
Throttle difference between UK and US is probably for EPA regulations
We have Euro Emissions Standards, much the same thing I expect.
@@HalfdeadRider EU stardards are much less restrictive, there is a lot of examples but one that comes to mind is the US 2009-2011 Ninja 650s put out only 69.7 bhp whilst EU/UK models put out 72.1 bhp
Saw an article that said the issue was with the gear box where a hole was too small to let the right flow of oil pass. It said that only bikes from a certain lot had this issue and there was a way to check by looking at the frame number (italian article so maybe for you american u gotta check the vin number i guess)
"I might push back the starting point in the future.."

Just sitting on the freeway is the worst way to run it in... need to vary the revs constantly.. not allways easy though of course
Always!
So I test drove a 2019 mt09 today and I loved it. Very comfortable and holy shit it rips. But what caught me off guard was how smooth it was and having no windshield didn’t bother me at all, even at higher speeds. So what are you gonna do with yours?
I have owned my 2019 matte balck mt09 for 3500 miles and its been amazing
How's the throttle catch on the new ones?? The original fz09 was pretty jerky when you opened the throttle again after braking.
beanwithbacon the new one is pretty smooth, its no way near the 14-15 models.
I just got my r6 yesterday I can see now that in real life bikes are sooooo fast
Sweet machine any way you take it.
It's to be expected with the first batch of a new model bike. It's always like that for any company. I'm sure it'll be recalled for somthing.
this bike is so cool dude
This bike is so nice it’s the luxury of super bikes.
I want to see loop around lake Travis
Do you use Reel Smart motion blur? Or some other 3rd party app
Do upload the 1st service video..
I've heard in one of your previous videos that you were "stuck" at 9k RPM, do you mean that the bike doesn't allow to go above until the breaking miles are done or is that just a recommendation from the dealership?
I got the answer from brock's perf on fb. They said it's because of the sound output from the exhaust. The sound is above what US laws allow. So they restricted it.
After 2-3 years BMW bike & car models are slightly revised and bugs ironed out, that's a good time for purchase.
Brent I live about an hour south of Austin and make the drive up 183 everyday to Leander. You should have taken 71-183 and then gone north. And maybe try the loop from 45 and mopac to 71 to 130 and back to 45. That trip would be a nice fast paced ride.
It'd be a larger loop but far less fun. Plus I hate 183 on the east side at the moment lol.
Motonosity I have to agree. All the construction has made it really bad and really unsafe for bikes with all the dirt and gravel that makes it onto the road. I have an 05 R6 and have lost traction 3 times since they started all the work.
Don't the USA use a poor RON fuel? might be to prevent engine detonation ?
Is he pushing the bike to its full potential cause ik get got go faster than what his doing ?
As far as the throttle restriction, I think I saw on another CZcams video saying that BMW has to restrict the U.S. bikes due to emissions regulations. The video also said the European bikes didn’t have this issue
When 650ib took his for its first service he said something about it feeling like it had a flat spot in the power and the mechanic thought it was normal.
It is normal till you get a ecu flash
I think the BMW dealership should unlock the full potential of the bike on the first service.. They limit it for the brake in time
Still so worth it.
The RR looks like an amazing bike. I ran out and bought the 1st gen RR back in ‘09 and it was a screamer.....BUT, is it just me, or does that new front end look way too much like an R3?
Google Bajaj Pulsar RS200
You ever think about getting a chest mount for the camera? Or maybe a shoulder mount? Would be easier to watch, all the movement from the helmet cam is hard to watch. For me it is anyways.
i think the bike has been de-tuned and only after the service they will do different mapping on bike
That's not true 2nd gear it has a huge flat spot you don't feel full power till about 11k then the thing takes off like a rocket
Thanks for clearing that up bro. Idk why people like to over exaggerate...smh. Anyways, keep them vids coming bra cause since I can't afford a S1K watching you is the next best thing...😎
Called a dealership today and the guy said there was a stop sale and nobody would be able to buy them. Said a dude who bought the one sitting on their floor couldn't even take delivery because they're not allowed to release it yet..
I've seen a blown motor replacement over in Europe. But I can't remember where it was, however they confirmed what you said...the machining was not done properly for 2 locating dowels and caused catastrophic failure. Here's where I have issues with this, quality control during manufacturing should ALWAYS catch issues. I used to work on the Space Shuttle and military avionics and machining/manufacturing tolerance was held during and after by Quality Control. BMW will make it right, but the past history of quality control is definitely questionable. Good luck with your bike, perhaps you got a good one. I personally will Not buy a first year of anything that BMW builds.
If i dont understand it wrong but you in the US can already buy the 2020 BMW S1000RR and drive it?
Are there not any police on the roads? Couldn’t do that here in the Carolinas
Why did you lowered the video quality Moto?
Not uncommon for manufacturers to send out new bikes detuned until break in period and service is done. I think that bmw does on some of their cars too (I can ask my friend who works for bmw).
Is 2020 version considerably better than 2019??
Ay if recalls happen. Then get the pengali!! That would be dope also. Be safe man.
Think the paningli is just a hair outside what I wanna spend lol
@@motonosity i feel you man.. hopefully one day man. Hope everything going well with the kiddos also✌
I think with any new 1st gen anything, there'll be some issues that gets fixed in the 2nd gen.
should I ask you a question, how do you feel with an earlier metzeler? xk I can't find a setup that gives me confidence. in front I feel the carcass too rigid and at the entrance it seems to lose grip especially at low speed.
get either Pirelli SC2 front and SC1 rear or get Bridgestone RS10 you'll never have tire issues again
@@taxi615 ok but now I have to get used to running with this type of carcass or otherwise exploit it as much as possible, in the circuit not from problems maybe it does not digest the smooth and very hot asphalt like in this period. I try to hear the parent company to see if they have track pressure and I'll see what a suspensionist tells me
I’d like to meet the guy in Ireland who got the recall notice !! Because I’m from Ireland & there is none even sold here yet , my dealer has a demo model that is not for sale , I’m going to go down to test ride it soon my current daily bike is 2019 s1000r sport but I’m looking at all these videos of the RR & gotta admit I’m liking them !!
The production stopped on the s1000xr and my guess is because ducati announced the release of the multistrada v4..My thought is that bmw will make a new s1000xr model with the engine of the new s1000rr same like the previous model.
I have been having an issue with my 2020 s1000rr cutting off in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear when I pull the clutch in around 16mph. Has anyone experienced this? Its very consistent with not holding its idle at that speed.
Think I told u this when you picked your bike up
For what it's worth, I live in Tokyo and have been first on my dealer's list since April, was told it would be delivered in July. I got a call from my dealer this morning, thinking it would be to tell me my bike's arrived. Instead, I was told that all shipments to Japan have turned around and are headed back to Germany on account of a "production" issue. Not just a North American problem... Those of us in the queue this side of the world will have to wait until October at the earliest.
I think I'll wait for the 2nd gen of BMW S1000RR
How are you doing that 75mph and up and its just casual talking or like strolling.. When im on that speed im already nervous and totally concentrated in the road.. Hahaha.. Ride safe bro..
What do you ride?
@@thespectator5259 that's exactly how I feel on my GSX-R1000. Anything under 120 is chillin
@@angrongorechild2237 r3 bro..
@@bebeKoRider Smaller bikes with less wind protection feel uneasy at higher speeds, a 1000cc supersport feels like it's on rails at that speed, it's a lot to do with the bike in this case and less with confidence/skill
Seems like a lot of quality control problems coming from BMW. I'd be pissed spending nearly 20k
I've just been informed there's a "Quality Enhancement" available for my 2020 M Sport.
The coating on the valves is not up to standard and a new cylinder head is to be fitted.
I'm in Europe.
wouldn't be surprised first gen bike had major issues chances are this will too!
I ordered my S1000RR in Nobember 2018. Delivery was scheduled for April 2019. Pushed back to June. Pushed back to August. Pushed back to October!
BMW gave me a 2018 S1000RR to ride for free until I get my 2019 s1000RR.
What you US boys call 2020 S1000RR are in fact 2019 S1000RR - for the modelyear 2020 there is a third color option - Hockenheim silver and an additional carbon package for 1950 € available.
For the German guys it is just painful to see the whole world getting S1000RR but in Germany we only have like maybe 100 bikes in the whole country. The dealers even aren’t allowed to give them for testrides ...
One thing to your throttle restrictions: gear 2,3,4 and 5 are limited in the US. Word on the street (german Forums hehe) is that The restriction of gear 2 and 3 will be gone after 1. service. 4 and 5th will stay and need to be addressed with a flash ...
Anyway. Stay safe! Cool video.
No recalls on mine
Survey says the top most unreliable bike brand next to Ducati is BMW. Japanese bikes are still in the top 5 most reliable bikes.
650ib said his recall was rectified before his was shipped so maybe that's why BMW isn't releasing a recall bc they r fixing it before shipping them out.
Because it is an issue with a machine they know what bikes are affected. They would let you know if your bike was affected. Also not all bikes in the US are M packages.
9:18 I don't think it has to do with throttle mapping, I think that's got to do with control sensors such as, traction control and wheelie control. What happens when you yank the throttle? It's either a rear wheel over spin (traction control) or front a wheel pop (wheelie control). I'd suggest lowering those or turning them off, then testing the throttle in a sort of "controlled environment". Also, keep in mind that BMW is inline 4 and it has a very smooth delivery, unlike Ducati or similar types of engines.
No it's actual mapping. Can't find it now but brentuning released an actual chart that showed what the throttle values were set at for each gear through the rev range.
@@motonosity Hmm, interesting. I wonder if that has to do with ShiftCam technology; that they are using maps as an input control opposed to crankshaft sensor, so that those actuator pins are deployed at the right time. Please let us know if you figure this.
@@motonosity Never mind, I found it. It's not a safety, it's for bullshit reasons :|
Every new bike that has been remade could have issues but it won't kill the bike. Toyota has recalls literally every year but do you hear the owners saying their car is unreliable? Same with bmw the n20 2.0T 228i was rumored to have a timing chain issue but literally like 5 or 6 people out of the 100 experienced this. I have a feeling these forums are paid by other companies to talk trash.
Taijean Moodie exactly. Recalls aren’t a problem it’s how a company deals with recalls and correcting the issues that matter 👌 no body is running their mouth about all the gearboxes that the ZX10R was destroying last year I believe it was then they had a recall to correct the gear teeth breaking.
@@MotoBikeMike it may be because Kawasaki fans don't want to admit some issues with their bikes. Same with yamahas exploding gear box of the r1 from 2009. Did you hear anyone say anything about that lol?
Isn’t the bike factory restricted when it’s in break in mode ?
Yes BMW sets the rev limiter for the initial 600 miles. This is removed at its run in service
What's the speed limit on freeways in the U.S?
Roy, depends on the state, location on the freeway, etc. if you are out in the open area, it will be 65 to 70mph. If you are around a populated area, it can drop to 55mph. It depends on how close the entrances and exits are.
Kinda like the 2015 R1 transmission recall...
I used to be a service manager and you pay 200 plus for just an oil change, nothing more!!! Tire pressure and top off fluids.....over priced oil change
If there were enough cases of certain issues it would be recalled and you would be notified. In this day and age you'll see people talking about issues everywhere after a new launch because it's the internet, no matter what bike people purchase there will always be poor sods that get the ones with manufacturer defects. They will think it's poor build quality or reliability, they were just one of the few very unlucky ones, it's just how it is. Also it happens much less than it would have many years back.
U r in the break in period. It gets un restricted after the bike gets serviced 500-600mi.
they do have that in spain
Yes, please take that wrap off. Lol.
All bikes these days have some restriction from factory. We are all in the mercy of emission regulation. It just happened that the 2020 s1krr is more limited than the rest. A tune will make that throttle at 100% instead of the 40-60% in 2nd and 3rd gear. wheelies in all gears... just have to sacrifice your 3yr warranty on a $22500 bike. 😱
650 ib has donne a open Pipe and a tune and the Bike has 10 HP on the Rear wheel as the v4 r eaven with Carbon Wheels. There is not that much Potenzial in this Bike how somme People think.Look to the SBK only to get 8 BHP more BMW take a lot of time to do this.
What kind of oil will you be running?
it's still on the service oil but if he wants the most out of it after his service he should be using Motul 10W40 300V every bmw uses 10W40 oil the 300V is a great racing oil free's up power and does a great job I've been using this in all my racing bikes for the last 10 years in all the S1K's I've had never had issues.
Cool thanks!
called a dealer, would not sell me their s1000rr m in stock, they said a hold has been placed by BMW, there will be recalls in the USA, ANYONE selling one now is doing so illegally they said
Why are your mirrors tucked.. Ur not going at high speed lol
There is a reason you don't see any drag strip or roll-on videos of the new 2020 S1000rr anywhere. It's getting destroyed by every other bike. Please fix the map BMW.
yes thats Right it seams the Old one on Strights will be faster😎
It might be anti wheelie assist cause my buddy’s panigale does that shit
If you want 0 issues, buy a Honda -CBR
We will always start at the speed limit 2 minutes later doing 90
Bridge to Gantry.....Oh its not the Nurburgring
Why does it too out at 125
it's still locked at 9K RPM...
Leave the mirrors on
That's the reason I don't buy products which are just launched I would wait like atleast 6 months so that I will get the product immediately when I pay for it and I will know if the product has any problems because other people will buy that product and the company will fix it by that time.
That's way you never buy a first year run, even though I did on my Duc,,,. Let the recalls start,,,,
Almost all-new any brand sportbikes has problems with recalls and more problems. Better waiting fixing all problems and shopping for Version 2.0 or next year newer models
Or buy a Japanese bike instead...
1:00 passing on the right when no one was in the left lane
yes there was a white suv, on the left mirror
Those mirrors look so dorky and huge
