World Cup hosts Qatar accused of under-reporting deaths in Gulf's killer heat - BBC News

  • Allegations that Qatar is underreporting the number of migrant workers who have died of heat stroke have been revealed.
Across the Gulf, extreme heat is affecting more-and-more people, especially millions of migrant workers who go there to support their families back home.
Temperatures that go above 50C, thanks to climate change, can leave workers with life-altering illnesses including heart failure.
The Qatar Government did not respond when asked to comment.

I am British and worked in Saudia (three times), Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Oman, over a 13-year period during the 80s and 90s. The way these countries treated third-world nationals (labourers and handymen) was shocking. They were working 12-hour shifts, six days a week (off Fridays), in sweltering conditions. They were paid pennies for their graft and most looked like skeletons. It seems today nothing has changed. I have absolute sympathy for these people . . . the Arabs are more interested in money than people!!

One thing I have to mention is even though I'm not a blue-collar worker and am privileged to live under good conditioning, the weather here in Gulf countries is genuinely intolerable, and we ourselves struggle with heat as the ACs stop functioning well and we have to repair or replace the conditioners continuously to tolerate the heat. Many houses now even include ACs in kitchens as we cannot withstand even five minutes without proper ventilation. I personally am extremely sensitive to heat, and that has grown worse with aggravated migraines and academic pressure. I have not walked outside the house for more than 4 months (if not more) due to the heat stress I experience. In the country I live in, strict rules are placed to prevent workers from being put under these harsh environments, however, many companies go undercover and violate all rules set for the sake of attaining a profit. My heart goes out to all the souls we've lost, and to everyone who underestimates the brutal working conditions on their bodies. Strict government must be established for those preventable incidents to be avoided..

Just like how our corrupt governments have a hand in maintaining poverty in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka etc. because of their own interests. And light goes away 6-7 times in a day because of load shedding. We should start planting more and more tress otherwise one day, heat wave will be unbearable and there will be mass death.

It is mostly the people from poorer backgrounds who suffer the most and it's terribly heartbreaking. Also yes, the class divides are quite explicit in the Gulf. You would see labourers working in 50°C heat cleaning glass on mega tall skyscrapers and literally on the other side of the road there would be a sheikhs house, nice, cool and shaded from the sun with beautiful gardens.
