England 0-2 USSR (1984)

  • Given the huge level of tributes he rightly received when he died in 2009, it's sometimes easy to forget the level of criticism Bobby Robson often endured when he was England manager. That is certainly the case after a 2-0 home defeat to the Soviet Union in May 1984, as 'Robson Out' is loudly chanted at the finish. An under-strength England rarely threaten to score against their lively visitors, but just a week later they will famously win away to Brazil.

USSR had some great players in the 80s but credits should also go to the late valeriy lobanovskyi, one of the legendary coaches in football history.

The USSR was the underrated team of the 70es and 80es. They were always Top5 in Europe behind Germany, Italy and France.
Nice tribute the english paid to the Soviets 18 years after.
