Was going back around to videos of this guitar after having it for a while and figured I'd mention here that I got this problem w/ the bridge pickup fixed! Turns out the bridge pickup is badly potted and that made it microphonic, so I took it to a local shop and they wax potted it, now it can play with tons of gain totally fine and it sounds great
Great that you let us all know that that's all it requires. However, if someone doesn't have a local luthier who's able to do that, an alternative is to order a GFS (guitarfetish.com) double lipstick p.u., which go for around US$40.
I already definetly have enough ( err..too many) guitars but I always check out the beginning of your guitar reviews just to listen to your playing ! ..You rock !! 😎🎸
Go and try one for yourself, i owned one def no such issues with the humbucker pickup, and I DID have tuning issues with that Wilkinson bridge, so try one for yourself before deciding, so many people on here think one review defines the whole guitar, for the record I sold mine so I am not trying to justify owning one, but it was for none of the reasons in this review
That feed back is from an UN-POTTED pick up! 1 was probably NOT strong enough to cause feedback, but both on in series was enough to push it over the edge! I had a custom wound minibucker on my EB3 and it fed back when I used a compressor pedal, even tho it was potted, but not enough. Had it repotted and now, NO problem! NO feedback whatsoever! GOOD review Shane! \m/
From Leo: Glad they came up with a lefty for you to demo. While the lipstick tubes require some adjustment to the amp, they really do reward you with some very clear tones without always sounding like surf rock. I even get some pretty good jazz tones out of mine. Hard rock into a heavy overdrive is not where they shine. I also moved my strap button, the "classic" location is not too good.. Good job.
Great demo Shane! Danelectro make some really cool guitars. I love the look of the 64 with a Bigsby in burst but I haven't seen one anywhere yet to try. Shame about the feedback, hopefully they address it.
Great review man! Pretty sweet guitar despite the goofy strap button position. Guessing the positioning of the tuners helps with the tuning stability? Sucks the humbucker has the feedback issue though. Hopefully it’s just a defective pickup. 🤙🏻🎸🎼
Love Dano's . I've a U2 re issue, 99? Had a set of Seymour Duncan lipsticks slapped in so bit more usable gain. Play through a Mesa 5:50+ Mesa dual 12 cab. Love it.
Thanks for that review, definitely have looked at them but after that i would if nothing else have to further research. At the moment waiting for delivery of my Epiphone 56 pro, with the fat neck and p90’s. I’m stoked for that, Could you review one of those.
I've got more and more into the vibe of Danelectro guitars, the cool art-deco aesthetics paired with the hotrod vibe screams rockabilly! I wouldn't really buy a new electric for the time being unless I'd find a killer deal for one of these, but I'm certainly looking forward for a chance to test one out.
I have one, I agree with everything you say. The build quality is very good, high fret access is poor and the trem is perfect. One thing, I play close to my amp and have not had any feedback problems but maybe I am not so loud as you. A good and fair revue.
That is pretty odd problem with a bridge humbucker. My first thought would be that the pickups aren't wired correctly. Also with lipstick pickups, they have polarity at the ends. If the bar magnets inside aren't setup right it can cause excessive noise. I've had a Dano U-2 for almost 20yrs and I love playing punk rock, blues, and even grungy type riffs with it. Never had a feedback problem like that, but I also almost always have a noise gate on.
They are two serious deal-breakers, Shane, thanks for the honest headsup. With that great double cut look, I always thought upper access would be great. And the squealing humbucker?!! Now There's an oxymoron! Gee whiz! Wide berth... 👍
Hey Shane, I just got one of these in the same color and I’m having the same issues with feedback in the bridge position, sounds like others don’t have the same issue. Did you figure out why some of them are having this issue or a potential way to fix it (ie swapping the pickups or rewiring something)? Thanks for the video, helped me decide how much I liked the tone!
Fellow lefty here. My lefty Danelectro Vintage 12 had a normal audio taper tone control wired in reverse, instead of a reverse audio taper. Made the tone control worthless, as it went 100% bright to 100% dark with a tiny rotation of the pot. (I replaced with a linear taper pot.) Also, the volume pot was a linear pot, which doesn’t work as well for volume. What are the tone & volume control pots on the model you tested?
In your opening piece my ears said P90 straight away. Shame about the Feedback. I wonder if they're all like that or if it's just yours ?? Pickup wired wrong at factory perhaps ... I have a guitar with that kind of pickup combination. Doesn't have the quirky Danelectro looks but the pickups are Seymour Duncans and the HB doesn't squeal. I just love the colour they call Root Beer. What is it ? A Yamaha PAC 611VFM. She's a sweetie.
When it’s time to change the strings, is it easy to do so by sliding the old strings out via the bridge? Or is it necessary to unscrew the plate at the back of the guitar?
I think it’s feeding back because 1. Those lipstick buckers can be pretty hot, and if they are un potted they can be squeally. 2. If this Danelectro model is hollow/Masonite construction like classic Danos then it adds to the issue.
Love this one, it just doesn't have that sound I love.....played a Harley benton 335 copy and that was it, it just had "that sound" that I love, will be my next guitar!!
I always have green eyed envy when I see your videos. I am a lefty also and have always struggled with buying guitars as most of the time I have to buy blind from online stores as no local shops ever seem to stock lefties. And to make it worse lefties just don’t hold their value, so selling them on always comes with a big loss :)
One issue is that traditional Danondesign is a Masonite hollwbody, which could be creating the howl at high gain: not sure if this model has a center block. Also are the pickups wired in series for the blended middle position? Dano secret weapon is to use the middle position as a clean boost. Is it wired this way on 5hezes new ones?
Hey man - that back HB pickup is likely to be microphonic? Put some obvious effects on it (delay) and some gain and then yell into it. Not sure if the pickup is meant to be wax potted but my guess is that this is just a faulty unit.
intheblues - Where did you get this one? I can’t find one anywhere in lefty. It’s like they never existed, except for this vid and a lefty (maybe this one?) that sold on Gumtree... EDIT: Sorry... you said they sent it to you. My bad. Let’s hope it wasn’t a one-off.
Does anyone know how these 59xt compare to the 64xt? Is it the same thing just a different body? Would the body shape effect the tone quality or not so much?
I have ‘em both, and they sound very similar. I haven’t had the feedback issue with the humbucker in either of them like the example in this video, by the way, and I sometimes use ragingly distorted sounds.
If this is a design flaw. The feedbacking. Then if one really wants to use this for extreme gain rock and metal. There could be pedal and or rack mounted feedback suppression .also maybe removing the offending pickup. Wax potting. Also a Noise gate pedal? This guitar is definitely in the arena of Jimmy Page and. Surf type music miserlou the ventures. Beach boys even. And maybe in the direction .of white stripes.or as others have said a pickup transplant. Great demo as usual.
Shame about the gain issue on the humbucker. Sounds bloody good apart from that. I fancy a Danelectro, but that’s a deal breaker for me. Too much pain with no gain!!
You know what I'm going to say? Don't sit so close to the amp when the gain is high.... Yeah, I know but Randall of Mesa Boogie had a good comparison when he said that "any Ferrari will take curves better than most other cars but there comes a time when the driver's right foot will put more power to the ground than the tires will accept and it will spin out" (paraphrasing). Other than that situation you may have a P'up that is just more sensitive and needs proper wax potting to handle higher gain settings - I've seen this happening to a vintage '59 Les Paul in a studio in London. Robbie Gladwell (formerly Dr. Robert) has some very funny anecdotes about this "condition" in his workshop..... Best, Pete.
I know you said you had the squeal at a gig too. But in the video you have it up loud with lots of gain and are about 3 inches away with a semi hollow guitar - did you really expect anything else?!?
I am already going crazy for the tone in this guitar and this is only the second review I have seen. The issues seem like easy fixes. Other people are suggesting having the bridge pickup potted (I would say either don't use it with so much gain or stay further away from amp when doing so). Moving the strap pin should also be a super easy fix.
To go with those colors it definitely should have had an ebony fretboard. The crooked pickups drive me nuts. The double lipstick is ugly. Your playing is great as always but this axe is just not up my alley.

Some epic sounding tones there!
Nice demo mate and great guitars imo, I have a 66T with the same pups and am amazed at how good they sound ! :-)
some really great tones pulled from that guitar and the Dsl. nice!
Got the 59x and feckin love it!

The feedback is a plus to me 😊

Looks and sounds great. Including a righty trem arm is a little weak though. Thanks Shane!
Sounds like you were playing a bluesy "Aint no Sunshine When She's Gone" in the beginning. Nice.

Thanks! Good to know I keep it legit for folks who own or have played these guitars. Thanks for the “feedback” pun intended haha 😆
Good work Shane
Thanks you've answered my questions. I really like this guitar but I'll have to go with something else.
Got to love those microphonic pickups! its def not a flaw, its cool dude!

Enjoyed your review. Any idea if the squealing humbucker issue has been resolved?
Hi Shane, just curious though what sort of chair do you use sitting for your guitar?
They are two serious deal-breakers, Shane, thanks for the honest headsup. With that great double cut look, I always thought upper access would be great. And the squealing humbucker?!! Now There's an oxymoron! Gee whiz! Wide berth... 👍
I am not sure what the problem is with the humbucker and high gain but hopefully, it eventually gets sorted out.
sounds great ...pity about the humbucker and the gain feedback ...cool
Proud to say I purchased a used mint condition Left handed PRS Custom 24 SE, my search is over and bucket item acquired at a very reasonable price.
Hey Shane, I just got one of these in the same color and I’m having the same issues with feedback in the bridge position, sounds like others don’t have the same issue. Everyone I spoke to after this video had the same issue. I don’t think they are very good for high gain tones.
Take to a guitar tech - apparently more robust wax potting is needed in some cases

Has a Wilkinson bridge, which is good.
Glad u did this ,i bn lookin at this for a while ,id probably put in a set o p90 fix the microphonics . Lilke p90s anyway .lol
Good job👍
Thanks for the info!
Turns out it’s not for me, glad I didn’t order!

is this a re-up? i thought I'd seen this two days ago..
Love this one, it just doesn't have that sound I love.....played a Harley benton 335 copy and that was it, it just had "that sound" that I love, will be my next guitar!!
The Online Busker the HB is a very good guitar !

NO centre block. Pick ups are adjusted from the back of the body! Lipsticks are unpotted by the looks!
Just so you know, 'Jacques' is French for John or Jack. It's 1 syllable, roughly 'zhahk' (zh meant to represent the g sound in 'reportage').
where did you find the lefty version. i couldn't find any
Nice looking guitar and workmanship except for the poor pickup and offset of the pups. Another homerun video from Shane.
Where’d you get this in left handed? All the 59xts are right handed from what I’ve seen.
Hey man - that back HB pickup is likely to be microphonic? Put some obvious effects on it (delay) and some gain and then yell into it. Not sure if the pickup is meant to be wax potted but my guess is that this is just a faulty unit.
Sounds not potted Nic.
Is the feedback because it's 75% hollow on the inside?
Thanks for watching the video! Check it out here Danelectro 59XT on Sweetwater - imp.i114863.net/Danelectro59XT

Ok, I here😎👍
I wonder if the humbucker isn't wax potted.
Nobody plays a sample of both pickups with a split bridge. Isn't this possible?
sounds "chewy " ....i like it
Hope they didn't fix that feedback issue - to me that's a great feature!
They didn't, I just got a 64xt from 2021 and it's the same way.
Too bad that it has that squeal from the humbucker, other than that, it’s a cool guitar!! Great tones!! Cheers!!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Feedback aside.. guitar sounds great.
Would it sound good with a nasty fuzz pedal is my question
It's like a poormans Rickenbacker in terms of unique looks. Love it.
Shame about the gain issue on the humbucker. Sounds bloody good apart from that. I fancy a Danelectro, but that’s a deal breaker for me. Too much pain with no gain!!
I wrote Danelectro about neck strap button 4 months ago got no reply.
Where did you get this lefty?? I wanna buy it
Danelectro sent it out. I mentioned that in the video.
@@intheblues so yo have a one of?
One of the few lighter guitars out there. I think any p90 through that amp would sound awesome.
✔️
You were getting some great dirty tones out that guitar shane.
Has anyone seen a lefty version anywhere??
You know what I'm going to say? Don't sit so close to the amp when the gain is high.... It has nothing to do with where I’m sitting. It did the same exact thing out playing live. The pickup is super microphonic
@@intheblues That was the problem with the 59 Lea Paul one - but I like P'ups to be slightly microphonic. Adds character, lad. Best, Pete.
I know you said you had the squeal at a gig too. But in the video you have it up loud with lots of gain and are about 3 inches away with a semi hollow guitar - did you really expect anything else?!?

BTW not hating at all.. Hoping it didn't come off that way. Love the channel and your reviews!
Those crooked pick ups are driving me crazy.
💖
Yeah, it sounds nice, but the visuals aren't happening for me either.
Think of them as "staggered" as they are installed in a staggered arrangement to better interact with the strings. It's a good setup!
PeterDad60 I’m sure but the look is weird to me
... but *TOAN WOOD* ?! ;P
I know him. He used to have a bar in Fitzroy.
Very sexy tones. 💕💕🎸🎸
maybe ,,,? it sounds interesting cos of the "faults" ...i really like the thing , good recording guitar ,,,maybe not live
To go with those colors it definitely should have had an ebony fretboard. The crooked pickups drive me nuts. The double lipstick is ugly. Your playing is great as always but this axe is just not up my alley.
DCS Jr a crooked pickup on a left hander 😣
Probably just a bum pickup Shane!
It's not. 2/2 did the same thing. I also checked with a friend who has one. Same thing.
@@intheblues okay, thanks! I really wanted one of these but it's not going to tolerate my wall of fuzz pedals.
No no no no
