Its about judging other people, you did it perfectly, you couldn't get past the hooker and so you lost the story. That is exactly his point, we judge others without knowing their stories. The preacher gave the bible to the hooker, the hooker changed her life and the child the hooker had became a preacher. "That's the story that our preacher told last Sunday as he held that blood stained bible for all of us to see... and the preacher who gave this bible to my mama who read it to me".

The song is supposed to represent three wooden crosses to make you believe they excluded the hooker because what she left behind was a sin. But when you find out that she survived and passed on her new found sense of virtue to her son, she now leaves behind a legacy of love and salvation.

I'm so confused as to how you're confused. It's such a simple story. The preacher in the story gives his Bible to the hooker in his dying moments. Her son grows up hearing the Bible from his mama, and becomes the preacher of the church where the "storyteller" of the song is a member of the congregation.

(3) the preacher left the hooker with the knowledge she didn't have to continue down the road she was living. She changed her life and her son was the preacher the narrator was talking about.

Yes- the preacher left behind redemption for the hooker in the blood stained Bible. She was saved, turned her life around & raised her son Christian and he became a preacher.

    Cross 1. Farmer
    Cross 2. Teacher
    Cross 3. Preacher
The hooker took the preacher’s blood stained Bible, got saved, changed her life, raised a Christian son who she read that blood stained Bible to, who grew up to be a preacher, who told the story to the congregation which included the song’s storyteller.

Randy Travis almost singlehandedly saved country music in the 80s. Country was seriously on its deathbed, but the young Randy Travis came along and lit that deathbed on fire, mid 80s. By the time 1990 came around, Garth Brooks was on the scene, and it went from deathbed to platinum for everyone, sort of. The rest is history.

There are four passengers on a bus. A farmer, a teacher, a hooker and a preacher. The bus goes through a stop sign colliding with an 18-wheeler. The farmer, the teacher and the preacher are killed leaving three wooden crosses on the side of the highway. Before the preacher dies he witnesses to the hooker giving her a Bible. The hooker survives and she reads the Bible to her son who grows up to be a preacher. This is a song that tells us that no one is beyond the reach of God. As Christians we spread the Word not knowing how it may impact somebody’s life for Him. The simple gesture of handing a woman of ill repute a Bible led her to raising a son who would go on to leading others to Christ.

The Preacher left behind his bible and last words to the Hooker which caused her to change her life and raise her son up to be a Preacher in his own life. He changed her life with his death. Randy Travis is indeed a Country Music Legend, he doesn't sing anymore because he had a Massive Stroke in 2013 and has had numerous complications since. He can't communicate much. Ok, first, it tells us something about your mind when Tijuana is the only destination they could be taking a bus trip to. There are three other states that border Mexico with border crossings. Being from Arizona, my first thought was they were travelling to Nogales when this song came out.
"That's the story our preacher told last Sunday, as he held that blood stained bible up, for all of us to see. Bless the farmer, and the teacher....and the preacher, who gave this bible to my mama, who read it to me." What I always got from that is that the hooker was given the blood stained bible from the preacher who died in the wreck. I think it's implied that the hooker is the mother of the preacher who told the story in church last Sunday. A near death experience like the hooker experienced will often be the catalyst for a person to change their evil ways. So the hooker turned her life around and raised a son, reading the blood stained bible to her son along the way. Her son grew up to become a preacher himself, holding onto the blood stained bible as a reminder to himself, and to help others. Country music back then was really good at telling stories.
By the way, I'm a big fan of James Taylor too. He's more of a folk artist.

Before abortion was legal in the US women who wanted/needed an abortion would have to travel to Mexico/Tijuana to procure one. The Hooker was pregnant and headed to Tijuana to end it. The Hooker didn't "have" anything (yet) to leave behind on earth, that is why she didn't die and go to heaven. Once the Hooker had the baby she read to him from the blood stained Bible every night, the Baby grew up to be the Preacher at the end of the song who was telling his congregation about the significance of the old blood stained Bible and that the way into heaven is the lives you touch so that they can also touch others lives and change for the better.

Awesome! I get the JT reference. Dustin got it, the hooker was the guy's mama that was singing the song. Randy Travis was awesome! You need to do more of his, maybe "Digging Up Bones", "The Storms of Life", "1982", or "On The Other Hand".

I think you would have actually understood the meaning of the song without pausing it so much. First, the bus was headed to Mexico; not necessarily Tijuana. Second, This was in no way, shape or form reminiscent of James Taylor (lol). Third, to lay it out: The preacher on the bus gave his blood-stained Bible to the hooker, who redeemed her life, had a son, read that same Bible to him and became a preacher. Fourth, the line "It's not you take when you leave this world behind, it's what you leave behind when you go" is the entire purpose of the song.
This is a story about redemption, salvation and love for that which is to come. The farmer left his farm to his son, who loved growing things. The teacher imparted wisdom to countless children. The preacher, who had undoubtedly already helped many of his parishioners, gave the hooker a second chance at life to redeem herself, which she seems to have done. It's really a wonderful song. If you listen to if in its entirety (perhaps sober), maybe you will see that.
This was a terrible reaction. Will not watch your channel ever again.

he gave the bible to the hooker, the song states clearly that's the story that my preacher told last Sunday, as he held that bloody bible up for everyone to see, he said bless the farmer the teacher and the preacher who gave this Bible to my MOMMA who read it to me. That preacher gave the Word to the other person that was searching for her lost soul. and saved two lives the hooker aka the MOMMA and her son The Preacher who had the bible given to her son the Preacher. Legacy folks Legacy.

In 1978 James Taylor writes a hit for George Jones, 'Bartender's Blues.' The song hits the Country Top 10, featuring Taylor on back-up. In 1978, James Taylor and Carly Simon hit No. 33 on the Billboard Country Charts with 'Devoted To You.'
So you could say he is country, along with other genres.

He said, "Bless the farmer, and the teacher, and the preacher

Keith, The first thing I want to say is I love you! I will not listen to Billy Ray Cyrus or Miley Cyrus. I only like to Billy Ray Cyrus‘s songs but I’m not doing it. I just can’t bring myself to do it. In my opinion, they are not talented. Now that I’ve got that off my chest, I digress!
    Secondly, chlamydia… Really? 😂
James Taylor is awesome, but he’s not country.
Carrie Underwood won American idol in 2005. Carrie sang this song with Randy Travis. In 2007 she released the song on her album. I’ve put the song lake below, as I think you really should listen to the song.

I really hope you both like the song! Having said that, I like Randy Travis singing the song alone. I like Carrie’s version of the song as well. But I really love the duet version of the song!

Youre right the farmer, teacher, and preacher died, obviously the hooker was near the preacher when he died and he gave her the bible. It changed her. And "why there wasnt 4 - i guess now we know" she was pregnant. She had a son and read him that bible. The narrator said - thats a story my pastor told on sunday...he held up the bible.. the kne his mother read to him. The hookers son became a preacher like the one who had given rhe bible to his mother.
