She has like 20 of these performances that will blow you away. I'd argue this one is below the middle of them too. I rarely revisit reactions of this one. Arirang Alone from Immortal Songs 2 is tops. She has a bunch of superpowers (mixed belts, crystal clear tone, pianissimo, etc.) but her ability and willingness to drop that jaw even for notes that aren't at the top of her range (that G5 at the climax is nowhere close to the top if you are wondering) is one of those things that every singer can copy but very few do. It is so extreme that one not to be named vocal coach accused her of lipsynching this performance. Hope you do some more by The Queen because you really haven't seen anything yet!

Lara, your reaction was typical. Not that it was inferior but everyone's jaw bounces off the floor the first time they hear So Hyang sing. She is just inexplicable. But I wrote up a biography that attempts to shed some kind of light on what you just saw anyway.

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: czcams.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/video.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 42 on April 5, 2020, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on CZcams.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on CZcams and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via CZcams, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up
She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol
It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be
in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician
and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special.
So Being a Cancer survivor And still gets sick from Time to time. But is an Amazing Artist
who gave up a Kpop career to sing for the Lord and for the Love of Music instead of stardom.
She learned English as a Child from Disney Movies, which inspired her to Write two of her

Sohyang is a constant pneumonia patient and that's why she is hesitating to make a contract with transnational music companies to demand a lot of overseas concert tours.
No, she just doesn't want to have to deal with international celebrity status. She is convinced it will ruin her spiritual life and relationship with God. And seeing how all the "international celebrities"--especially the music variety--behave, I am glad she has turned her back on it. And indeed, her health won't let her carry out anything like an intensive concert tour schedule and probably never will. She had a very hard time just doing eight concerts with David Foster in Tokyo in 2018 over a four day period! But that's okay with me. I'd rather have a living So Hyang than a dead one!
She is actually Disney's Moana voice in Korea, so yes...she is a "princess."

I am one of die hard Sohyang's fans as someone mentioned below. lol. Welcome with my heart!. Just wanna let you know a copy-right issue with the reaction on sohyang. This reaction wasn't blocked because your subscriber number is not that high or this may be your first time on Sohyang. But, her performances published by KBS and MBC are very often monitored and your reaction may be blocked in the near future. So, you may make her video part transparent or overlap it with her photo. thank you for such a great & genuine reaction! i know nothing about singing but always loved the Simon & Garfunkel original and when i first heard Sohyang sing it i was floored and almost offended that she had taken something i thought could not be improved upon and made it so ridiculously better. Since then i am a huge fan of hers, her Begin Again Korea covers of I Will Always Love You, Misty, I'll Be There (duet), If I Aint Got You are spectacular -- and her covers of Amazing Grace, Arirang Alone, Oh Holy Night, are breath-taking too. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' sung by Sohyang, I listen to this song several times a day. I think the arrangement of this song is really good.
I found So Hyang last summer and you're really just scratching the surface with this one. The tricky thing about her is that she doesn't have her own CZcams channel and some of her videos get blocked. With that being said, here's a good starter kit:

She's in her 40's and has worked hard to master her craft. She's a cancer survivor. The cancer prevented her from having kids and the cancer treatments led to her having a low immune system which has led to multiple bouts of pneumonia. She doesn't sing for fame or a record deal, because she has turned down a few. She sings to lift people up and make them feel better. She really is a blessing here on earth.

She is a phenomenal singer with impeccable technique a vocal coach like you can truly appreciate. Kim, So Hyang is MasterClass
So-hyang is in the opinion of her numerous stans the premier vocalists on the planer! I know that is a subjective opinion and other people have their favorites also! She is part of the holy singing trilogy of her Damash and Morissette! We believe that while her technical prowess is impressive, it is her ability to commit 200% to a song (which she does her own arrangements to) and transmits emotion to her listeners, that are superior to anyone I know of! I recommend her renditions of: Arirang Alone; I will Always Love You; Everyone; or Stand by me. I also recommend Korean national treasure singer Song So-hee, who sings a traditional music style that has be heard to be believed. Recommend Duman River an extremely sad song about woman waiting for her husband to return but doesn't and she leaves her shoes at the water's edge and enters rhe waters to be spend eternity with her beloved!

SoHyang is without doubt the best female vocalist in the world today. Can I suggest you react to 4th Impact - 4 sisters from The Philippines . They auditioned for X Factor UK 2015 and the video of their audition has more than 175 million views. They have many covers on You Tube, any one of which will amaze you.
