Lyrics:
Ghost of Mother
Lingering death
Ghost on Mother's bed
Black strands on the pillow
Contour of her health
Twisted face upon the head
Ghost of perdition
Stuck in her chest
A warning no one read
Tragic friendship
Called inside the fog
Pouring venom brew deceiving
Devil cracked the earthly shell
Foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said:
"You have to live before you die young"
Holding her down
Channeling darkness
Hemlock for the Gods
Fading resistance
Draining the weakness
Penetrating inner light
Road into the dark unaware
Winding ever higher
Darkness by her side
Spoke and passed her by
Dedicated hunter
Waits to pull us under
Rose up to its call
In his arms she'd fall
Mother light received
And a faithful servant's free
In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what is clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give
Ghost of perdition
A saint's premonition's unclear
Keeper of holy hordes
Keeper of holy whores
To see a beloved son
In despair of what's to come
If one cut the source of the flow
And everything would change
Would conviction fall
In the shadow of the righteous
The phantasm of your mind
Might be calling you to go
Defying the forgotten morals
Where the victim is the prey

Such an amazing song. Mikael's vocals were peak here. Good analysis too, when I read the lyrics to this album when I first got it I was definitely like "oh man....I need to go take a walk in the day time" it was so dark ha ha.
We gotta be careful listening to this stuff on cloudy days lol
@@MetalSharpensMetal Its an aptly named album Ghost Reveries. Everything since My Arms Your Hearse has been about ghosts in some capacity. The music being haunting only further seals the deal.
Hi fellow brother!
There aren't so many of us that recognize the beauty that exists in such dark music. I have moved away from most of it as I deepen my walk with the Lord, but Opeth and a few select others have remained. There is something ironic about creatures revolting against their creator by mastering the gifts that only He could have given them. We are blind until the Spirit opens our dark eyes. God is glorified through great art, in spite of the rebellion of the artists.
The composition and execution are majestic. Thank you for your thoughtful analysis. I will listen to more of your content. I am hopeful for the ideal Christian Prog Metal artist/group that will "get it". The Gospel is the richest subject matter, full of Mercy and Wrath, Grace and Judgment, Redemption and Despair. If only someone could execute it, not sounding like Opeth necessarily, but at that level of coherent thematic integration, to put weight and grit where it belongs and majestic beauty elsewhere...
I want to recommend to you my other favorite prog band: Karnivool
The entire "Sound Away" album is a masterfully composed, executed and recorded album (there are a couple of less interesting tracks, but on the whole it's top).
The theme is moving away from "religion". I'm pretty sure Christianity is what's in view, but it's not explicit. Even through it's wrong, at least it not vain hedonism, or murderous demonic stuff. It's worth interacting with the theme and absolutely worth listening to the music, amazing stuff.
If you're up for the journey, I recommend the last two songs: Deadman & Change.
They conclude the theme and play into each other. Deadman is from the perspective of a man on his deathbed. The epilogue is funeral bells, a dirge, took me way too long to figure it out. And it leads into the final track. Change has some theme of rebirth, indicating the death from before may have been a metaphor, not literal. But musically, brother, it's euphoric.
Goliath is another track from that album, much more condensed musically, but still extraordinary. I feel like that's their most popular track.
Sorry for the essay, but lastly, if you're ever interested in doing a podcast, or a conversation (recorded or not) about metal music, music in general or like topics, from a mature Christian perspective, we should connect.
Hey brother! Thank you for your essay, I appreciate all of it. I really like your description of how we sometimes use our gifts to lash out against God, but He still uses it all for His glory and our good. Great insight.
And I can't tell you how many times I've thought about having a super theologically solid Christian band version of Tesseract specifically. There are some GREAT Christian metalcore bands today (Convictions comes to mind), but it felt like the full orbed prog metal band that makes concept albums with movements and heavy instruments...doesn't exist in the way I was hoping they would. I could be totally wrong, and maybe they do exist out there, but I haven't quite found the perfect mix of rich theology and prodigious song writing. Another album that I would love to see a Christian iteration of would be Februus by Uneven Structure.
I know I've heard Karnivool, but I can't remember any of their songs. I've added those 3 to the list. And I would absolutely do a podcast type thing! Email me at metalsharpensmetal7@proton.me and we can connect. Thanks for stopping by!
You may have to review your top 3 or 5 metal vocalists after you get to know Pain of Salvation. No growls there but Daniel's voice is amazing. They are also swedish and play prog rock/metal. If you're curious, King of Loss would be a good start, as it showcases their sound, but every song, every album is very different.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to check them out!
@@MetalSharpensMetal i bet you'll love it. All albums are conceptual and most songs are linked somehow. As for lyrics, well, you got a lot to dissect. Hard reality beautifully written. Food for thought, actually.
Best enjoyed front to back album listenings for their concepts and diversity. Enjoy.
