    Agree with the general consensus here, that you really showcased the alternate full potential of this machine that I've not seen anyone else do. I have owned a Digitakt and just used it in a very linear way as thats what I was trying to do at the time, knowing I had barely scratched the surface. Actually want one of these because of the so called limitation and immediacy ( not having to choose what to sample, pitch issues with sampling etc), and this video really made apparent what can be done with a little thought and creativity. Loving the last demo immensely- a new instrument that has expression and tactility . You really took this machine to new places whilst keeping it musical. Thank you

      Hey, I really appreciate hearing this. I want to. Pre-pandemic I was trying to get from an average of about 1 video every 10 days down to 1 per week. I know that I can get back to that soon, possibly even more frequent uploads. As I mentioned in a community post last week, I think I'm going to just sort of open up the channel content, not necessarily do lengthy tutorials all the time, branch out into new topics, and use the channel as a way to learn more about some of my own gear that is underutilized. So, shorter videos (but I'm still thinking over 10 minutes) and diverse topics - I think that will be the right direction. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks again for these fantastic in depth 'Model' videos. I have the Samples and had started thinking that I had exhausted its sound design capabilities but now you have given it a whole new life. I would like to have gone into a bit more in depth with the Velocity Modulation, especially in regards to the LFO destinations but I will play with that myself, in a way Velocity Mod is really another LFO in itself which is fantastic. Also thanks for introducing me to the Retrig mode which I never used before. Look forward to more of these 'Model' videos.

      Richard Grant Thanks for the feedback! I agree that there is a lot more to velocity modulation - and I certainly want to try some of these things out on the Samples, too . Velocity -> length on a short, looped sample could give some nice granular effects🤔. Thanks for watching!

      @@undulations I am using it for Sample Start and getting some great sounds. Really interested in trying out the MODE to control the LFO tigger modes. Karl Odlum on the Facebook EMS user ground posted these settings:
      "- Set Vdep to 0
      - Set DST to MODE (Second last destination)
      - Set Ddep to 2.0
      With these settings:
      - Trigger velocity of 0-31 will activate free run mode. (LFO always runs regardless of trigger)
      - Trigger velocity of 32-63 will activate reset mode. (LFO Restarts when a note is triggered.)
      - Trigger velocity of 64-95 will activate LFO hold. (The instantaneous value of the LFO is held until the next trigger. Basically a sample and hold)
      - Trigger velocity of 96-128 will run the LFO for a half cycle and then stop. (Kind of like the ENV mode but using any of the LFO Waveforms.)
      - Trigger velocity of 127 will run the LFO for a full cycle and then stop. (Same as above but using a full cycle)"
      I assume it uses the same Trig Velocities for the WAVE setting as well, although I haven't been able to work that one out.

    I thought that when the pressure on the pad changes, the influence on the depth of the assigned parameter changes (as it works with volume), but the depth of the LFO speed is set on the first hit and does not change when the pressure changes further.

    Man, Undulations, you’re a true sound designer, love your series on Model Cycles (Model Samples, too) your approach is so different, minimalist, etc. different than the typical “commercial” reviews of the Elektron products, very creative, thanks. Do you think the Cycles would be a good pairing w/Digitakt or overkill? I guess Digitakt has no FM, just samples, etc. One is only limited by one’s imagination,

    • @undulations
      @undulations  Před 4 lety +2

      JOE BJORNSON I really appreciate the kind words🙏🏼 As for adding the Cycles to your gear and pairing it with the Digitakt? I feel like it's not outlandish because they are so different. You can certainly get into some "synth" terrain with the Digitakt (oscillator samples, turning LFO's way up to target pitch for some FM sounds, resampling to bitcrush, granular, etc.) - BUT, it's just a lot more accessible on the Cycles. I know the Cycles has been kind of reconfigured as a groovebox, but it still seems like a synth at heart. Another thing about this combo is how you can sample things from the Cycles (sounds, entire patterns) and then work with that in the Digitakt. A lot of possibilities. Thanks again for watching!

    • @sebastianshuster5229
      @sebastianshuster5229 Před 3 lety +1

      It does pair well with the Digitakt! I think that it would even pair well with the Digitone. I agree with @undulations that it does feel like a synth at heart but it sounds different enough and does excel at percussion. So you could mix and match having 10 different potential sources of tone or percussion. Very powerful! It sounds different enough from other drum machines that I’d say it would pair well with just about anything 👌

    Thanks for this. So fart it's one of the only deeper dives in step by step sound design for the Cycles. I just got it a few days ago and it's my first foray into FM synthesis. Really loving it so far and trying to stay patient learning it. I'd love a video on a pad with a slow attack. Decay and sustain are pretty clear, but I can't find a way to slowly bring in a sound. Any tips? Would love a Krell step by step video too!

    • @undulations
      @undulations  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey, I really appreciate this comment🙏🏼 I tried out a couple of different ways to give a sound "attack" (or something close to that). The cleanest method, as far as I know right now, is to use the LFO. So, pick a Track (I used the Chord 'machine') and set the Volume/Distortion (i.e. not the Level) to 0 (or very low). Then set the track LFO to have a destination of DIST (i.e. the volume) and a max depth of +63. Use the _/|_ ramp shape (others may work as well) and set the LFO multiplier to 1 (or maybe 1x if you want the attack to change with the tempo). Then, it the LFO Menu you need to turn on the Reset. So, every time you play a note (by pad or trig key) it will ramp up the volume. Use the LFO Speed knob to control the attack rate. There can be a clicking sound - some practice and changing the decay value can smooth things out (note: the ramp LFO is periodic, so if you hold the key too long it will cut off and ramp again and again).
      So, I wanted to try this method out in a small tune. I put the result over on Instagram (dr_nim2014). Take a look, if possible. Thanks again for this comment. I think Elektron sees the M:C as more of a groovebox, but it can do some nice ambient sounds. I think they stuck with the overall form of the Model:Samples, i.e. no Attack, but in that case the issue is more easily overcome because your sample, in itself, can have an onset.

    • @DavidSparksMemphis
      @DavidSparksMemphis Před 3 lety +1

      @@undulations Thanks so much! I had the same thought about using the LFO but I couldn't get it quite failed in. Going to try your approach, the IG video sounds good and close enough. • @alistairparrish1503
      @alistairparrish1503 Před 3 lety +2

      Not 100% certain you can do this on this machine but on the Digitakt you could "overdub" or "imprint" parameter changes using the live record mode once you have some steps down. You could try with the volume once a sequence is laid down.

    • @undulations

      @@undulations no i'm serious. check out the forum tips & tricks thread. it will blow your mind. it's a quirky machine where there's all sorts of possibilites but also a ton of initially frustrating limits.
      you have some great ideas here that i think would be very valuable to that forum, but also i think the forum will stimulate your whimsy into possible new territories and maybe you'd rethink continuing on with videos beyond a certain arbitrary range.
      but like, seriously, the last part of this video is a treasure of creativity.
      my unsolicited suggestion to you is that you do exactly what you're doing, but use your examples to lead and *then* get into the explanations. maybe you could do that by editing, or maybe it's just something you could think about when you do your next tut. if i was editing, i'd lead with 48:48 and then say "keep watching for how i did it."

    Thanks much for the review, do you think cycles+samples+NTS-1 would be a good DAWless lil combo to have?

    • @undulations
      @undulations  Před 4 lety +1

      I do! Some things to think about in such a setup: midi should allow you to sync up sequences on the Samples and Cycles, but then you could send midi out of whichever Model: you put second in the chain and send it _into_ the NTS-1, basically use one Model: track to control the Korg (not sure offhand that the Elektron and Korg 3.5mm midi ins/outs are a "match", so a 5-pin midi cable might end up being required). And then, in terms of audio - it might be cool to mix the Samples and Cycles and then send _that_ into the NTS-1 audio in. This would allow new effects like Bitcrush, Ping Pong delay, and Riser reverb to be used on the Elektrons. Also, because of the Model: architectures, their delay repeats can't have any native reverb - using the NTS-1 reverb(s) can fix this and really improve the overall sound. I think it would be a really powerful trio👍🏻!

Btw, any cheap decent quality mixer you could recommend to commutate these please? Thanks again for your answers and your calm, hypnotic videos. What do you think of the above mentioned combo vs MC707 or Deluge( only one of them, trying to cap myself at $1000:))

    • @undulations
      @undulations  Před 4 lety +1

      Well, from what I've seen on CZcams and Instagram the 707 and Deluge both look very powerful. I guess it comes down to preferences: one nice thing about a multi-part setup is how it can be broken up and used. NTS-1, usb battery, and phones lets you go pretty much anywhere. I've been wanting to get a 101 but I have read that it lacks chaining or a song mode (I assume the 707 has all of that). I need to focus on learning the 404sx I already have, tbh. Anyway, as for a mixer - I have been pleasantly surprised with a NADY MM-242. Really inexpensive but nice features. It would let you use 1/4" cables to hook up the Elektrons. Then with a 3.5mm stereo to dual mono 1/4" Y- cable (really like the U-Green brand of these) you could either send the NTS-1 into the mixer OR get stereo out of the mixer and send it through the NTS-1. Best of luck on all of this, and thanks for watching👍🏻

    Hi. Could you recommend a reverb and delay pedal to improve the model cycle? Thank you.

    • @undulations
      @undulations  Před 3 lety

      Well, I feel like one of the main things to consider is keeping the stereo/panning capability of your Cycles intact. There are so many mono reverb and delay pedals out there, but far fewer stereo options. I have an Atlantic reverb+delay pedal from Nux Pedals that I like, but I think one of the Zoom MultiStomp pedals (I have MS-70CDR model) is probably the best value: stereo, battery, so many fx that can be chained. Another thing that I would consider is a Korg NTS-1 synth. It comes as a simple kit (video about it on this channel), has stereo reverb, delay, and more, is open (fx can be added), can process external audio (Cycles would need 1/4" to 1/8" stereo cable), can add drone note or arpeggios, and is quite cheap (but I'm not sure if there is an availability issue). Hope this helps! Thanks for watching👍🏻!
