      I remember when I first drove my Sonoma, with the 4.3 Vortec V6... it was so much fun. Snappy is a great word to describe how they feel. I’m excited to restore that little truck. Glad I never got rid of it. Had tons of people asking me for it. It’s slightly lowered and has the sidestep bed.

  • @mmm_L.817
    @mmm_L.817 Před 3 lety +75

    I actually have to disagree about lifting the bed, I recently replaced my fuel pump on my 1998 S10 and chose to lift it rather than drop my tank, and I was able to do it on my own with very little help.

    Excellent video! Great clear explanations and good camera work so you can see what parts you are referring to....I've got a 1998 s10, it doesn't seem to have any immediate needs as it runs great but I'm trying to get familiar with it so I know what to look for if something needs fixing, and having ideas about some things that can be a problem means I'm ahead of things and not just totally in the dark if it needs some work. I tend to prefer to either do the job myself or at least track down the problem before I take it in to get work done. Videos like this are great resources!

It still over heated afterwards and I was like I give up. Back then i had a low paying job so I could'nt afford to keep having it repaired. He's also right about the gas tank metero going bad. mine actually started to go bad right when i got my new car. I was then like it's my dad problem now lol. I did like the s-10. My brother got the truck afterwards. When i was about to move out i asked if he still had the truck. Figured maybe i could get out of renting one but he had just sold it for parts.

  • @Silverado06
    @Silverado06 Před 2 lety +5

    This should really be two separate videos. The 94-97 and 98-04 are almost entirely different. The 4 cylinder is completely different and the older truck had head gasket and cracked head problems. The newer 4 cylinders and near perfect. 250k plus without touching it. In the rust belt there is a section of exhaust that will rust out roughly every three years lol. In short the later trucks with a 4 cylinder 5 speed, I would argue are more reliable than the tacoma. My Sonoma I sold with 354,000 and he is still driving it and my dads last S10 made it to 270k before the frame gave out from rust.

      sorry to say but you may not know till you look up that exact model and issue. you're trying to find a solution in the wrong place unfortunately. sensors are some of the easiest jobs if its external and also at times the most painstaking process of taking apart the valve body (after droping the trans out of the vehicle) and trying to remember where each ball bearing went and didnt, and if you mess up oh no you just blocked of the 1-2 actuator because you misplaced the ball bearing. or the pain of c clamps and keeping things aligned. NTM you would need the tools to take it apart. all in all, good luck my friend.

    When you lift it you don’t actually lift the bed off the truck. Remove all bed bolts on drive side and loosen half way the bed bolts on the passenger side. Have blocks ready and lift drivers side and place as many blocks on top the frame as you need to create space. Loose bolts on other side hold that side to the frame and won’t slide. Easy-Peasy

      +Mario Ugapo We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c

    The 2.2s are notorious for head and head gasket problems bc some 1 thought itd be smart 2 design motors and parts from aluminum.

    I have a '99 S 10 4 cylinder I've had for 22 years now. The upper control arms need replacing and it's leaking oil but the valve cover is invisible unless the A/C compressor and part of the FI system is disconnected. I'm wondering at this point if it's really worth the expense, except that a new or used pickup would be quite expensive. Just 166K miles, I'll probably bite the bullet. BTW, it's lived its entire life in Florida so there's no body cancer.

    The upper control arms look rusty? Imo the whole thing looks rusty 😂

    Ratchet strap the bed with a engine jack and pull it off. One person job or cut an access panel in the bed by the fuel pump.

    Top 5 problems. No one makes freaking parts for this anymore. No interior shit, no wiring harness, if you gotta fix oil leak at rear main or timing cover gasket may as well replace motor. Steering sucks because they don't make intermediate or upper shafts anymore. Junkyard aint better either. That being said I still have mine after 25 years

    I had a 2000 Chevy s10 with the 2.2L 4cylinder4 speed automatic it was literally the worst piece of just I ever owned the engine locked up after 200,000 miles but before that I replaced the transmission twice before it wore out so much plus it rusted to pieces because the metal on it was so thin. I wouldn't recommend a second gen s10 to anyone honestly.

    I disagree never drop the tank unless it's not a truck if it's a truck all you have to do is loosen the bolts on the passenger side a little bit loosen the bolts on the driver side all the way and then tip the bed over and support it with something and you can get at that tank and you won't have to take the bed off if you have an SUV I'm sorry you have to drop the thing but you want to cut a hole in the floor

    Had a '88 with 2.8 V6 and 5 speed. Great truck. Kept until 188,000 miles as it was getting weak and I didn't want to rebuild. Had a few problems. Steering box sprung a big leak at steering shaft seal. Pin on shift linkage broke, dropped piece inside and killed a gear. Cheap plastic crap inside interior broke. Had a 2000 with 4 cyl and 5 speed. Great truck. Didn't have to do anything to it. Sold at 158,000 miles. Wish I had kept. Replaced it with used 2000 4wd with 4.3 V6 automatic. Looked good but was a turd and got poor mileage. Sold with 120,000 miles. Wish Chevy made one like my 4 cyl. today. Don't like Colorado>>expensive and bloated. May as well buy full size, but they are even more overpriced and bloated turds. Liked the small size trucks. Toyota is getting bloated and really expensive.
