  • Jean Shepherd performs live at Drew University, Madison, NJ on May 08, 1977. Shep tells stories about Jersey, grade school, and high school. He follows the show with a thirty minute Q&A session that begins at 2:27:50. Special thanks to my classmate, Jim Miller, who produced and recorded the show, and for digging up the cassette tapes after 40 years! The Drew Pub held only about 150 students, and the intimate surroundings felt similar to a Limelight show. Jean had just done his final WOR radio show about two months prior on April 1st. Apologies for a couple of "hiccups" caused by forty year old tapes, but the quality is surprisingly good after all these years. Enjoy! [Audio is public domain. Photo © by Fred W. When I was a kid I used to listen to Shep on a radio hidden under my pillow and fall asleep. Now I listen to him on the computer at night as fall asleep. He is better now that I know more.

Drew University hosted a lot of Rock concerts back before it was cool. Got to see The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Chuck Berry. Wish I had still lived in Jesey when Jean appeared at Drew. In high school I never missed his WOR-AM shows . . . or his articles in Playboy. Yes, some guys actually read the articles, too!

That was a lot of fun listening to Shep in a casual, relaxed, unrushed format. Enjoyed the Q&A at the ebd very much, too.

A unique gem of a find, in the treasure trove of Shep. Thanks(!) for posting this.

2:51:15 What Shep says here about political parties was prescient of today's situation, where one half of the country decries the other half as deplorable, racist, misogynist, fascist, etc., all with no self-awareness at all. ='[.]'=

And will continue as politics has... not just since 77', but for centuries before. It's 'what it is' and 'how it will be' and continue regardless of party affiliation. Which btw is why I adore Jean Shepherd. His acceptance of reality without any bumper stickers (virtue signaling).
