- IRON LUNG - Dive Deep Into a Blood Sea in this Intense Subsea Horror Game From the Creator of DUSK!
Iron Lung is available now on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/18...
#IronLung - Hry
Note: I've trimmed out most of the travelling time between locations - it is a lot of fun using the map to navigate around the map but it takes a while so figured it would be best to focus on the main locations and other highlights.
Also, If you'd like to see more sea-based a horror games, you can check out this playlist here: czcams.com/play/PLPwIGGh-tc7EyZ7QGb0FulxjehMtsZXEj.html

The fact that you can't see where you're going is an interesting mechanic. It also makes pressing that button even more intense. I'd like to see a no-clip of the map though. Because it's clear those aren't just stock images. They're 3D renderings.
If you crank the FOV to max and lean against a wall you can clip the camera out, but disappointingly it's just the default unity sky outside of the submarine.
Makes me wonder how the images are actually made given the lack of environment
I'm guessing there's an internal "map" of sorts that's the coordinate grid, and that's what the player's position is tracked on and how the images are generated - also saves a lot of GPU power since it doesn't actually render anything outside the submarine.
@Stolen Username I imagine that the map is actually there; it's just only rendered to the photo camera and not the player.
I checked through the files and did some stuff, there is actually no map, its actually just pictures with a mix of 8 bit, black and white and some blur. Other than that, the "map" is just pictures.
@@TheUser69420 So there's an image for every possible angle you take of every possible point? I feel like there's more than just that.
He's been welded into a tin can submarine and told to explore an ocean of blood with weird anomalies and huge monster bones in it? Damn. Sucks to be this guy!

Maybe the fish just wanted to say hi to the guy.
Assuming he even did the crime, being falsely convincted is both a real life thing and classic hero back ground.
The premise of the setting alone is terrifying. It's hard to have a post-apocalyptic setting for a civilization that spans multiple star systems, but this is definitely one way to do it.
Ikr, the setting and lore is just so...bleak in an unnamed way
Just like this one.
For a long time, I thought, that Warhammer 40k was the bleakest and darkest sci-fi setting out there and even then I still feel a glimmer of hope for its inhabitants. But this setting just left me completely hopeless.
There is no great enemy, that you can at least try to shoot or run away from. It's just... the end of life...
@@tristanbeer1257 A slow spiral, fading away in the Darkness as all goes quiet
@@LainVics It's something I never thought about. The world going out with a bang makes for a more exciting story, but everything slowly withering away over a painfully long time is a much more terrifying fate. Honestly when the damn place caught fire was more disturbingly scary to me than any of the monster stuff. Being trapped alone in a vessel that's slowly getting hotter and burning you alive is something tangibly terrifying that can actually be imagined through the senses.

Agreed, there's so much unknown in the sea that hasn't been explored where as everything above sea level practically has.
What would be more effective is if the front window was open but the view range was minimal. Even if you rarely could actually see anything, psychologically this would keep you staring out for what you MIGHT see.
That would be cool but I only think that the Creator use pictures and that there is no real like outside in the game
@Vrl0 You can take pictures of any wall in the game and the geometry is accurate to the map. They're not pre-rendered.
I think that waiting for the picture to show up adds more dread before you can actually see what's in front of you.
I don’t know if you were paying attention but the window can’t handle the pressure. They literally just welded metal onto the front. They sure were right. The vessel excluding the window couldn’t even handle the pressure. Idk why not slap a live screen on though. Considering what I just mentioned though, they probably didn’t have the time or resources.
That achieves nothing that the current system doesn’t already.
The idea of the quiet rapture reminds me of the setup of Junji Ito's Hellplanet Rumina. Where it turns out the stars/planets were going out because a literal planet-sized thing was eating every planet and star it came across. The surface of it felt similar to some of the photos the sub takes, tentacles, random bones and stuff.
For anyone else trying to look for the manga, search Jigokusei Lemina.

I recommend checking out Duskers. In it you are playing as a lone spaceman who travels the space with his trusted drones and scavenges derelict ships to stay alive and gathering scattered bits of unclear ship logs while trying to piece together why everything has seemingly died.
The idea of stars and planets vanishing in a sudden didn’t resonate all that well with me at first. Personally preferred if they went along with the Big Freeze theory and based a game around surviving amongst stellar remnants, dwarf stars, rogue planets and black holes. All with resources gone and having little energy to harness. Generations of traveling past things that once were sources of life now on the verge of their own deaths. Probably won’t make a huge difference in terms of gameplay but lord does the desolation in knowing the context send shivers down your spine
welp, life really imitates art as some billionaires entered a submarine like this to search for the titanic
8:06 It was there at the start of the journey!
Nice catch!
yes! I knew I saw it before on one of the pictures! makes me sick to think it was there lurking around all along. I wonder if there are actual 3d objects outside the sub. would make it so much more creepy if that thing actually were out there, either following the sub or randomly teleporting. urgh....
Actually the monster is following you and possibly the one making the obstacles... When it finally got tired of the wild goose chase.. It deicded to go for the kill.

If you pause at the right frame, you will notice that the creature that we get attacked by does not match the one that we snapped an eye photo of, meaning that there is quite possibly a whole ecosystem down there.
Now this is such an cool and eerie idea.
Navigating with only quick snaps of visuals, isolated under immense pressure while trapped in a cage are all recipe’s for bleak and depressing existence.
Great horror concept!
I'm guessing the title is a wordplay. Since iron lung is for people who are already at terminal stage in life. And this is a metaphor of you being stuck in the machine-like submarine under the sea. And blood contains iron, which means you're literally stuck in a sea of irons. Not to mention iron that's entering youg lungs as blood is starting to drown you.
Iron Lung is the name of the Submarine he's in
@@ChadHellgado Im pretty sure he knows that, hes talking about double meanings and metaphors on top of that.
@@isaacargesmith8217 Hey you never know
Could also refer to the fact that this is such a small, enclosed space; it’d probably be hard to breathe.
It also refers to the state of the universe, just like u said, the universe is at the terminal stage in life
Back in elementary school, we did a lesson that was all about how to navigate in a submarine. It was a computer, a map, markers, and a compas. We navigated based on time and speed and our goal was to make our way to the treasure chest. We couldn't see what was in front of us, we had to trust the map.
This title reminded me of that fun lesson.

I kept thinking back on this game during the OceanGate sub incident. Terrifying

The whole game is basically one big set-up to a single jump-scare. But it's actually done well. It's pretty good, as far as short horror games go. It wasn't a cheap throwaway jump-scare like the ones a lot of folks like to sprinkle all over their games excessively, and it didn't have to be excessively loud either. Not quite the low-hanging fruit that most jump-scares are.
This isn’t necessary

This QR event has me curious about it. Only leaving life on artificial structures outside planets. And a moon turns out to have seas of blood.
Ikr, so much lore in a short intro, even more in such a small game, it makes one want for a whole series set in that world
its like some kind of god forgot about the humans that left the planet to voyage through space, and never came back to retrieve them
The Beatles made a song about a yellow submarine. This one will be quite red, considering the fluid that it is in.

i sincerely hope Duskdev revisits this universe, it sounds horrific and sad.
The Word that you are seeking is depressed
Kinda like this universe!
yea he better make a survival game on one of the space stations in this same universe, perhaps you find food/get it at a cafe, bring it to your shelter, talk to your neighbour buddies, have a chit-chat before going to sleep in text form while also sharing what you've experienced that day, and then the next day arrives with more and more hints of something being terribly wrong, and eventually you're the last human left on the entire space station as you drown in the darkness and notes drawn with blood are shown, maybe there could be different endings
maybe also some cameos of the photos from this game actually getting recovered, or just some records of 2+ people failing the same mission and then the last one getting the submarine turn into shreds
OH OH AND THE PLACEMENTS OF THE SHREDS MUST MAKE SOMETHING, LIKE A FACE
yeah i got absolutely carried away with this one
You’re in luck! Iron Lung is getting a movie and the game developer and Markiplier are in charge! 😊
This is the kind of stuff that turns my blood to ice water. Blood, bones and undead things in a horrifying void of creepiness.
You don't need big budgets to create impactful games. Just a great idea and careful execution. And lots of love.
WOW! A claustrophic environment and fear of the unknown make a delightful combination.
7 minutes into the game and I'm already completely sold. It's brilliant.
What happens if you drive into that spacial anomaly? The one that twisted the front and even the picture of it?
I tried this and sadly nothing happens, it just crashes the sub with a black screen the same way if you crash the sub towards a wall. Nothing unique.

Side Note: have you explored every part of the map? Or just the spots they tell you to?
Dude, this feels like it could be like, the basic archetype for a Mystery Flesh Park game. The story was written with vehicles in mind, so imagine driving through wide tunnels, and occasionally squeezing through tight spaces, observing the alien environment from an armored locomotive, and controling it in a similar manner. Your mission doesn't have to be that complex too. It could be as simple as shipping supplies to certain parts of the flesh pit, it could be like a trucker simulator combined with minimalist horror.

Truly appreciate what you do.
I knew from the moment I had to keep turning around to press that button that it'd come back to bite me in the ass at some point, so at the very last 2 points, I walked backwards into the button, but lo and behold I couldn't walk backwards on the last one (you hit an invisible wall right before the fire extinguisher unless you turn to look at the button), and I was like "ah shit. I knew something would happen with me turning around there.." But the creator could've done so much more, damn. Overall though, an effective use of many different techniques given such a gameplay environment. Very nice. There's no alternative ending by the way, I tried to navigate to what seems to be the open ended place at the top right, but it's just walls there too.
Dang, I'd never have thought about that issue
I kept getting a thumbnail that said that this was "truly terrifying", so I finally checked it out. Definitely a disturbing premise, but ending with a jump-scare of a monster doesn't seem all that original.

Wow. The navigating by the light of vanished stars is some premium interstellar horror. There’s a time limit now before that light is gone forever. The desperation of this mission. Are you really a prisoner or did they just make up charges for you just to get more explorers?
It has such a good buildup but the finale is something of far too cheep a jumpscare.
If the developer watched this and is reading comments, I'd like to make a suggestion:
Everything in this goes great, but for the finale. To amend this, I'd suggest the final picture be taken, and the object be a nest with eggs in it. Then, have the radar indicate that something is getting closer, and when it hits the sub, show massive teeth puncturing through the sub.
This makes the creature seem massive, as the encroaching one from the jumpscare ending here doesn't have eyes anything like the photo from earlier., which we're lead to presume looks something like the two skeletons we take photos of.
By having teeth destroy the sub, it continues to obscure what the thing looks like, and the nest gives a logical reason as to why it attacked you.
I do really like how this ends, especially with the build-up beforehand (with the monster following you and the blood rising in your sub). But I do also think your ending would be pretty badass! :)
I agree. The ending was a letdown compared to the excellent buildup.
I have to disagree. The finale is the only jumpscare in the game (aside from the hissing air pipes), so it actually worked for me.
I have a hunch this game is just a teaser for the next major game they're working on set in this quiet rapture universe.
Gimme a cross between FTL and Dead space plz.

Faithfully recreated in real life.

Man, this game was excellent until the end, in my opinion. The build-up was wonderful, and the scare was earned, for sure.
It's kinda weak that it was a jumpscare, and thats how it ended. Was expecting more mystery.
It's almost a tech demo disguised as a game. I'd like it better if everything (including the fire) wasn't scripted, like if the fish smashes the sub at a different spot each playthrough.
@@ianfinrir8724 it can depending on what pictures you take to end it
Its a good little indie game. Scripted things tell a stronger story if done well, of course. Its akin to older games and horror experiences. Something with a clear identity and idea. I feel like it executed itself well.
