Fun fact: The cat was added because Lixian's Patreon supporters kept demanding that he add a cat to the next game he made and he forgot to in the last game so he added her in this one. Also, Lixian sacrificed his throat to give the Captain voice acting. There's more behind the scenes/the making of info on Lixian's channel that's super cool to learn about.

As someone with multiple scuba certifications, I can confirm the ocean is quite possibly the scariest place to have a horror game.

This feels more comedic than scary to me giving the captain's VA but that's hardly a bad thing. I firmly agree it's got an arcade feel to it, it's quite fast-paced and simple to understand.
the captain is voiced by the creator of the game, lixan kinda did almost everything for the game and i think this is probably one of his better games if simple
@THE ARBITER Lixian did all the animations but he did not make the models. He mentions it in his video about how he made the game.
We seriously need better voice acting in these indie horror games lately. Sound is half of what makes horror scary.
@Rasengdori13 I agree VA work is important but I don't think the VA is bad here; I'm pretty sure it's meant to be comedic. That's why the captain kept ending all his lines the same way, getting more and more ham each time.
Sound is pretty important...sure, but voice acting doesn't exactly do anything for fear unless you're actually suppose to care about the character.
Fun fact, this game was made by Markiplier’s editor, who has made some decent spooky stuff in the past.

If you think about it, our protag is hammering out metal against the heavy, heavy ocean. The tutorial leak should have been a mission abort, but what do you know. No wonder the Captain wanted to take a Kracken at it. Kudos on beating hard mode. That mode seemed hard.
Also what sort of sub needs chains from the surface ship to ascend and descend?

@@boopbooperson1654 yeah.. now that I think about it, making even the tiniest amount of progress hammering out an [inward] dent in a sub at the bottom of the ocean seems like it would be literally impossible due to the pressure. Maybe there's some reason that's not the case though, idk

19:45 - I have definitely noticed that as well. You can fix the bent walls so much faster than fixing a hole, that it seems to be better to just fix the walls first so another hole won't open up.
EDIT: Although if you have been smacking a wall, and a hole opens up, it takes less time to fix it. I guess smacking the wall gives some sort of "repair points" that carry over even after a hole opens up.

I didn't find the gameplay on this super enjoyable to watch, mostly because it's very repetitive in what it asks of you. So I do agree with Manly's assessment that it feels very much like a minigame type of thing, something that isn't exactly scary either. The game just gives you a sense of urgency of repair or drown and that's about it.
Yea, it's like Five Night's at Freddy's, but a lot better since it's much shorter, so you don't get tortured, and it actually has some comedy in it

@@Tophatcherry FNAF is as far from actual horror as you can get, all it has is repetitive jumpscares, if you played 1 night of 1 game, you've played all nights of all the games, the only difference are skins... so yes, this game is a lot better from a non biased point of view

Ah yes, a classic of subaquatic nautical manteinance and engineering, hammering out the dents of walls of your sub which are being subjected to an enourmous inwards force by the sorrounding ocean.
Wouldnt want to be a fly on this world, given the strenght in the arms of these "humans"
Are we also welded into this one? I noticed that the ladder goes to the ceiling but there's no hatch there.
@@jeffumbach i have no idea, must be a secret hatch so the smugglers can get in and out, and make the police think they are trapped there. Now it turns out the captain had been a drug traffiquer all along, and going to the earthquake site was just an excuse to meetup with other traffiquers. Ms Kraken just wanted some of that cocaine.
The squid monster is just lonely. Let it in. Show it some love. Smooch it maybe.

Commented this on Markipliers video, but man can you imagine a pasmaphobia style game were you go in an out of a divebell to identify mysterious huge creatures lurking in the dark while repairing things and keep your dive bell safe? Like im a character artist and thinking of designs to play off this concept made me so exited hearing someone mention something similar.

deffo check out barotrauma! Alien planet in perpetual night deep below sea ice, so a very limited range of vision and tough enemies that can break through your hull and swarm you while you try to repair it. Super scary when you play alone imo 😬

Plot twist, the sea monster was trying to save you from the strange metal cage.
For being an small dev with mostly unassuming graphics, the waves hitting the beach at the end was really well done

This game is my fear. In the Marines, I did the Navy's training for fixing the ship and my entire team almost drowned since we couldnt fix everything on time.

To be fair, submarines are built to withstand a lot of pressure from outside, and the monster was doing a pretty good job at destroying it in hard mode
I think the creature also has a "playing with it's prey" thing going on. It wants to see you panic before it actually kills you.

I think it really helps to play this game with a headset, that way you'll not be so disoriented and always have at least somewhat of an idea where the bonking has happened to find and fix the dents a bit faster. Always a good idea to not rely on just your eyes for direction when games offer this sort of directional sound thing.

Not sure if anyone has already commented this but I would be interested in seeing Manly play Alternate Watch, I'm surprised I haven't seen him play it yet but it may just be other factors
This one reminds me of the type of game that'd come with an old soundcard to show off that snazzy surround channel tech, where it'd be more effecient to follow the direction of the sound than your eyes.
Very good submarine horror and much more hectic than the slow-burn of Iron Lung, which was another excellent one you played.

I love how you can just smack the dents out of the wall that are desined to constantly hold several tons of water on the other side.
Why did the monster struggle to break the submarine but snapped the boat in half no problem? And how did it know where the captain was when it can't see above the water?

....So, I got questions.
1) If the creature was intelligent and dexterous enough to just yoink the captain out of the window like that, why didn't it do the same thing to us in the sub???
2) If the creature was strong enough to snap A SHIP IN HALF IN LITERAL SECONDS, why was it just poking the sub???
3) .....That extended ending. Seen enough hentai to know where this is going.... But seriously, wtf was that whole thing about???
4) What purpose did the whole peeping tom act have? It didn't seem to make the monster more aggressive, or really be detrimental in any way???
At least the cat survived, so that's good...

@@NaturalFlirtGamer That's one of only two theories that makes sense. The other is that it was just investigating a new thing in it's territory, like how sharks will nibble on something new to see if it's edible or not.

To be fair, it didn’t.
Nori is easy to repair and given that it’s dealing with crushing abyssal pressures + a literal giant sea monster attacking it, the captain wasn’t wrong: Nori’s durability is pretty solid.
If it were a submarine that specialised in *avoiding* and evading monsters, /then/ it would’ve been a letdown. Failing at its one job.
This is the third video I have watched of this game. Lixian's horror and humor mix is fun for me.
I also don't know why, but over the years, I have been enjoying watching lixians skills grow, I have enjoyed watching his growth more than most creators. I don't fully know why but his games Ree fub.
