- The Esee 4 might be one of the most popular knives in the world. We've tested it before and really didn't like it. However! back then we mostly looked at edge retention. In todays video we'll test the Esee 4 in what it was made for. Hard use!
Will our opinion change? Only one way to find out! Watch the bloody episode!

#Esee #knives #DBK - Zábava
I can't believe they sent Martin death threats over a knife. The problem isn't the knife it's the insane people threatening others over a shape piece of steel. If you get that upset over a knife review you probably aren't safe enough to even have a knife.
Haha exactly. Seems like some people feel personally offended if you say you don't like something they like
@@DutchBushcraftKnives think you guys would really the Lionsteel T5 knife as well
To be clear.... ESEE (we) would never send death threats.... we just sent MORE knives to @DutchBushcraftKnives to test.... now some other folks, maybe some rabid fans sent death threats... we can't take those guys anywhere! lol
I am not at all surprised. It is a sport for ESEE to trash their customers on the ESEE forum.
@@RandallsAdventureESEE no one said you did...
esee is the most honorable brand out there. like their knives or not; you have to love their brand and the people there
The warranty alone speaks volumes. All my Esee knives are excellent.
Selling a 1095 knife for 150 bucks is not honorable at all. Thats like 3 times what It should cost and like 6 times the production cost
@@martinerhard8447 exactly why they replace you with a brand new one no matter what happens to it. 150 for a knife that can be replaced for free at any point in your life; pretty good deal to me
@@maxyass7562
And that is why it pays off for them because people would need to replace their blade more than 3 times before they loose profit and the average buyer just doesnt do that.
On top its a fat slap of rather soft 1095...not much that can fail but also not good performance. So the risk to have to replace it is also low.
Worst that can happen is that you loose it somewhere but then they wont replace it
@@martinerhard8447 they are for people that actually use their knives, you pay for a quality heat treat, customer service and superlative garantee. Yes, you can buy a 1095 knife for cheaper but I wouldn't advise to use it too hard.
I am using only Terävä Jääkäripuukko for many years in the army. This knife has never let me down. A Beast ;-)
One of my absolute favourites. Very happy DBK introduced many of us to it.
Which version do you use? The 110 or 140?
@@musclebillcoaching I use the 140 with an baltaron sheath that I later bought.
Bro typed so fast he left afterimages in his text. 💀
I have had my Esse 4 for about 7 years, carried it everywhere and used it for everything.
Yea its not perfect but it's a great all rounder that I trust with my life
Video idea whether its a stupid one or not, try taking 1 of each of your favourite knives from each type (survival, bushcrafting, hunting, folders, etc) and put them through the same challenges to see which is best suited to all categories

I love how your knife channel is turning into cooking channel slowly :D And you don't need to change the name for it: DBK - "Dutch bushcraft kitchen" sounds great :D
A knife's blade material is always a compromise between edge retention, toughness, hardness, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and sharpenability. 1095 at 55-57 Rockwell is soft, so sharpening is a breeze, the edge will mostly roll over and not chip (good toughness), and the blade will bend when prying. But, this material at this hardness comes at the cost of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and edge retention. Personally, I have more confidence with a softer knife that will bend and not snap or shatter like glass.
Death threats over a knife review? In some ways I hate the internet. But I’m almost 70 and remember a time you wanted to learn about something on a advanced level, you read a book. The internet breeds cowards, you can say just about anything, then hide. Growing up in the southern USA in the 1960 if you threaten someone in this manner or even called someone a liar, life would not be easy. And no, they didn’t call the cops. So much for the rant . Dutch Brothers do a great job and are well informed. This site makes the internet a better place.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
The Esee 4 was the first "expensive" knife I bought myself back in the days. Now that I own over 150 knives within 50 Bark River knives, CPK, Spartans, several customs and so on - I still like my Esee knives :)
Show off
Well, I didn't want to brag, I just wanted to show that I still like Esee now that I own some higher-priced knives ;)
Always fun going back to the ones where it all started. For me it is the Cold Steel SRK, that is the first knife I bought that made a serious step from my Moras and other unknown budget brands with shit steel. The SRK is where I really started nerding the topic.
I don't use it today because I have others I prefer (much thanks to DBK for introducing some of them) and also a blade I designed and had prototyped that is outstanding!
Hey guys, they make this knife in S35VN as well, would be fantastic to see you put that version through its paces as well!! 🤞🤞
This KNIFE channel frequently makes me very hungry. That meat looked incredible.
I own the Ese 4 the Esee4 HM and the Esee 6. As someone that lives on an acreage in the middle of the boreal forest of canada. I swear by these knives. I EDC the Esee 4HM scout style. I have abused the hell out of my other Esee 4 and it never fails. I use my esee knives to pry, chop, baton, carve, strip bark, cut rope, cut zip ties, butcher animals on occasion and more. I have become an Esee fan for life at this point. And lets not forget their awesome warranty that cant be beat. I have also converted 4 other people to esee knives. People will always have their personal preferences but i think the majority of people that buy an esee and put it to work will love it.
Get it done DBK!!!
I have an Esee 6 and an Izula I use for backpacking. Both are excellent.
1095, while not a premium steel is very tough and shock resistant. It’s also easy to sharpen in the field, something that is not as easy to do with super steels.
Hennie Haines are one of the top knife retailers in the UK. The guys there know their knives very well and have provided invaluable advice to me over the years. They have a very similar outlook on Esee as you guys do. They make good knives, but not the best knives.
From Europe the best budgets are still mora and hultafors, and premium still Fallkniven.
From the US I’ve become very fond of my Bradford guardian, more than the Tops field craft I also have. Both of which were recommended over Esee.
But all of these knives are better than balls
Always love your content and both of you guys are awesome, but now that I know you drink Jack too, you two are ABSOLUTE LEGENDS to me.
Bedankt voor het filmen mannuh! 👍😁👍😁
Hi guys, thanks for adding humor to the business, always fun to watch! Rewatching older videos raised some serious questions: 1) wonder what happened to your project Budget Bushcrafter Knife? 2) Is there a reason for not having covered any of LT Wright's knives up to now? 3) Will the Bushcrafter Scout story have a sequel? Keep on shredding blades! 🤙
Lt Wright was going to send in a knife for review but never did.
It's too expensive for what it's worth to buy in the Netherlands sadly. Easily doubles the us price.
Our own budget knife had a big set back as the heat treatment was shit :(
@@DutchBushcraftKnives What was the name of the 3V Puukko Knife you said was the same price and better than the Esee?
I couldn't understand you because of your cool accent👍😉?
Please 🙏 don't baton me in half for saying I couldn't understand you, I'm the problem not you😕😉😄.
PS Puukko has got to be the coolest word in the world🤷.
I can't stop saying it over and over again, I'm considering changing my name to Puukko😄✌️.
@@flipflat4814 I assume they’re talking about the Benchmade Puukko or Leuko. That was always their go to “same price better materials” knife(s). That said, I’d be curious to know if it’s a different knife @Dutch Bushcraft Knives
@@poncho151 Thanks 👍.
I can't believe a Benchmade knife is about the same price as a Esee 😯.
I have to check it out for sure, I might finally become a Benchmade owner and get to try 3V whoot whoot 👍.
Mikkie always makes me laugh 🤣 excellent video boys
The sauce would be even better if you make in the cast iron pan after cooking the meat !
Geeesh guys you're braver than me. Making a claim that Esee is the ultimate anything. Nothing starts the keyboard clatter faster than discussing Esee heat treatment (ok, well maybe discussing TOPS heat treatment)!! I think it was Abe Lincoln who first said 'I like Esee' and next thing you know it was game on. As for me, I don't mind Esee (please stop - don't shoot) but there's no way I'd call the Esee 4 a survival knife - let alone the 'ultimate' survival knife. Sharp blades all.
I agree. Our Conclusion is that there are better survival knives and better bushcraft knives. We don't recommend the esee. But the title doesn't say the outcome of the video it's a trigger 😜
@@DutchBushcraftKnives 👍👍👍
So cool my friends .
Thank you .🙏
Cool knife. I have also heard the Fallkniven A1 is right up there. Keen to hear what people think of that comparison. Cheers Dave 🇳🇱 🇳🇿
You guys need to do a video on the Ontario Blackbird, it's my all time favorite "do everything knife!"
I totally agree with your first impression of this knife, years ago. And I loved old DBK for the onesty. I wont buy another esee, never again, for me It's an hard No. And over than that i also don't like them, their warranty and their general behavior. That's my personal opinion of corse
How can you not like their warranty? And behavior?
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 because i had problems with them for a bent junglas. People in the past have broken their knives for fun, as a result they are extremely biased with the guarantee. Break one of their knives, then you can tell me how it went.
People can't admit that certain brands use old ingot steels because they're inexpensive to purchase and it's easy to work with, not because that steel has any outstanding properties for the intended function of the knife.
Guys your first review of this knife was better, if ESSE than why not APO1, or why not srk from coldsteel, i bet srk can do everything like ESSE for much better prize
You should review the Svord Peasant. Its a affordable unique large folding knife. They are only 20$, and come razor sharp. I think all the viewers interested in value (aka dont want to spend hundreds to get a qyality knife) would enjoy your review. For 20$ its not the most robust knife but it is simple and sharp. Wont have a stroke when you lose it. Cheers and thanks for the content.
Yes this
yes the best ever
Jääkäri Puukko for the win! :) love you crazy brothers . The small off comments are mad funny .
It makes my day watching you guys! I have the Esee 6, Laser Strike, and Izula currently. All of them are very good. So far o haven’t had any issues with any of the Esees I’ve owned.
OK. Now I'm going to have to DEMAND that you test this knife side-by-side with a, say, Bark River Aurora or Bravo 1, in CPM 3V, in order to directly demonstrate how this knife is superior.
Id like to see that as well.
To this day I still do not own a esee knife 😁👍I’m more of a TOPS kinda guy. Thanks again for another awesome video guys!!!
Agree my friend. Way more variety with the knife choice, similar warranty and the same steel if that's what floats your boat.
I love you boys so much. Bloody awesome
Well it was the meat that was bloody..... But we get it. lol
Perfect timing gentlemen . 💨💨💨 let’s gohhhhh. Who plays Destiny 2 ? Where are you guys ? And the city sucks compared to woods in the backyard 👍👍😝 but it’s nice to visit to appreciate what we love .
Another great video.
yeah, lets go dbk knives!
Great video! For the performance I would just get the RAT 5. Same steel, just shitty sheath, but with the $ you can just get an aftermarket one
RAT 5 is made with 1075 steel, not the same as esee anymore sadly.
Love this video
There is ALWAYS the Terävä Jäkääri Puukko, nothing beats that. 😉
Exactly haha
i carried a esee4 for years and years for hunting and backpacking, it never failed me, true the edge dulls a bit fast but i can sharpen it on anything almost, so there is that, and i see that ad a plus. it has field dressed close to 50 moose and over 200 deer, never worried about the tip busting of in a socket when popping the legs off even moose. how ever in the last yr i have discovered BPS knifes and there adventurer model has replaced my esee as my go to hunting and camping knife to the point that my esee now sits on my self of great items i no longer use but cant bring my self to sell. esee 3 and 4 are great knifes no question, and having used esees warranty service, i can say it was great, personal emails with the owner and a replacment knife, no questions. simply amazing in this day and age. esee knifes with new handles are 100% better also in how they feel in hand, its like a different knife.
good job guys!!!
As always blood good show mates
You guys really need to test a LT Wright jessmuk, I think you would be impressed, one of the best bushcraft, do almost anything knives around, also it comes in 3v.
You guys are like Terrance & Philip from South Park all grown up! 😂🤣😂 Great Videos by the way.
You guys should have reviewed the s35vn model because you love stainless steel and longer lasting edge retention. It would have made more sense
Holy DBK Day
Not a bad knife at all, but to hyped considering better options available.
I would really like to see y'all a Bradford Guardian 5.5 and 6.
I carried an Esee 4 for almost 10 years as my EDC knife. I worked construction during most of that time but it was on me constantly. I absolutely love it for everything. Idk why. Now that I have a bit fancier job I switched to izula 2 but dam I wanna switch back. It's just so good.
I love the knives from Esee ( 4,5&6 )
I really enjoy your videos, I know you did a video prior on if you only had three knives, which they would be, I am curious which 2 knives you would keep if you could only have 2 knives - also, curiously, if you could have only one knife, would you choose a survival knife or a bushcraft knife, or something else?
How about reviewing a Winkler?
Just sayin! 🧡😬🧡
nice one!
You guys have GREAT REVIEWS!!!! WHY?? Because you show no favouritism, regardless of what anyone May think. I applaud you. Those giving death threats. GROW UP!!! This is a knife review vlog. It’s not life threatening. It’s like being so proud of being from a certain nation. Who chooses to be born in a certain country? Who has any choice in that area? So why are people so PROUD to be this or that? You had nothing to do with being born, let alone being born German, African, Mexican, American. Your parents had something to do with it. So…. STOP BEING SO PROUD OF ESEE, BUCK, or any other manufacturer that you would threaten someone doing a review of a knife. What’s more important a knife review or someone’s life? Cannot believe I have to even ask the question. These guys do good unbiased reviews. Don’t like it? Don’t watch. Simple.
Unfortunately these knives are way too expensive here in the UK, together with other American brands like Tops and LT Wright.
Why would I get an Esee when I can have a Mora Garberg for half the price which will perform better?
Try a knife from Busse Combat Knives. They just celebrated 40 years in business. There's tons to choose from, and they are well respected. ✌ 😃
We tested a bussee info stele knife. It was extremely sturdy but also overrated in my opinion 😜
Paint remover will take the black coating off without damaging the blade. I forgot the brand but there is a organic remover made of oranges. Lightly coat whatever part you want to remove the coating and about 15 mins later you can wipe it off like black slush
You take the coating off and it will rust in 10 seconds.
Yep, years ago I used mod ESEE knives for people. I'd etch the logos in first, then strip the coating. Among a few other mods.
And FYI, I've *NEVER* had any issue with rust. Can't imagine how you would, unless you are using these on a salt water beach or something.
@@vilhamdutch2962 lol the shit only rusts if you don't use it. It's like my back up hammer at work is rusty af rn setting in the gang box after a few months but the one I use every day doesn't have a spec of rust on it.
@@vilhamdutch2962 - I stripped the paint off of all my ESSE’s, just the blade, leave the paint on under the handle. I never have issues with rust, I used cider vinegar to do a force patina and it really helps, blade slices better without the additional friction from the paint.
If you're going to remove the coating, then either using wax/lard/tallow/oil to coat the blade or a forced patina will help with rust.
Cook the meat directly on the coals for the best sear and also more uniform doneness. You’ll get conduction and radiant heating.
Id like to see the same tests performed on one of your dbk knives.
I got one !!!!! Yessss
ESEE is laughing all the way to the bank with these fan boys. Those knives are worth 1/3 of what they ask so yeah.. there’s a good warranty. You paid for 3 knives and got one!
They have to cover the “no questions asked” warranty tbh. No wonder it’s severely overpriced, as it’s TOPS. But at least tops gives you better handles and sheath too.
Oh and a whistle! Ahah
“Edge problems” are only a real problem if you don’t know how, or just don’t want to, sharpen a knife in the field. Honestly, I’m not going to want a “super-steel” knife blade that is difficult to sharpen, in a survival context. I’m not saying edge retention doesn’t matter at all, like I’d want to carry something with 8cr13MOV, or a crappy heat treat, but that said, Esse’s Rowan 1095 is excellent for what it is, and it serves the purpose very well in the field. If you want to try Esee’s best “bushcraft” all around blade, you should review their Laser Strike model. With a lanyard added for greater leverage, it easily out-chops the Esse 4, and competes with the Esee 6, but with a far more compact profile and more useful blade design, IMO. It’s my favorite of all the Esee’s and it’s also one of the least well known.
That venison looks really good, good job gentil men (?) .
I am an esee fanboy. You are correct, it needs a sharp spine. I used a file to accomplish this, after taking off the coating. It also doubles as a great boat Anker while fishing.
Do you guys have a sharpening video? Getting into knives and am interested in how you add secondary edge and what not
You should try the Ontario Blackbird. The original was 154CM, but you can also get it in S35VN and 420HC.
I love it, handle is perfect for me, good steel, I don't need more. It's all about one's skill. But apart of that there are better knives for specific tasks. Esse 4 never failed me and I really abused it. Which some other high end knives would do as well, but that handle.. that design.. I love the grind as well. All of us honestly not feather stick a lot. It's personal with me and Esse 4. Also same with one of my Böcker, first love, will be my fav always as well.
Knife community: "Can we get some MagnaCut?"
DBK boys: "No, We have MagnaCut at home"
MagnaCut at home: esee 4 in 1095
Wäre dabei. Schöne Idee 😊
Good job on the meat brother! Next you should find some Bear meat. Here in New Mexico we make Bear meat Green Chili stew. Nice and spicy
Video idea. I know it’s kinda completely not what you guys do but I’d love to see OTF knifes on your channel, not like the expensive microtechs but actually from what I’ve noticed there’s tons of cheap out the front knifes claiming top shelf steels and I’d love to see you guys step in like the hero’s you are and prove those cheap OTF knife makers are scamming people and outright lying about the products they sell. Either way love the videos you guys upload! lol

My first concern in any survival or apocalypse scenario is, what is the knifes warranty?
How many apocalypse scenarios have you found yourself in?
@@LastBastian less than I'd prefer, but you may have missed the point
@@usernick8928 I get the point. I was just poking fun. 😋
@@LastBastian no worries. So was I with the initial comment. I dig esee, and they no doubt have the best warranty in the biz. But there comes a point where that doesn't factor, and that's where they intend it to be used.
I will never understand when people talk about survival and apocalypse scenarios lol
You should watch less zombie movies thinking you are in one of em tbh, even Less Stroud uses just a multi tool and I’d bet he does more “survival or apocalypse stuff” than most of ya. But that’s me. I’m not going full Neanderthal beating tools on rocks.
One thing about these is that they are fun and fairly easy to modify/ customize. In fact, years ago people on ESEE and bladeforums used to pay me to mod their ESEE knives.
Yea those esee mods were Kool especially when they strip the paint on the junglas and blue steel the blade. Awesome stuff as far as looks.
@@Bill-mw7sh Haha... Yep. I actually started that trend back in the day. I made a how-to on those forums.
The money I made from customizing people's ESEE's, I put into a few more tools, and started making my own knives.
I still have my original modded Junglas. Good stuff.
@@LastBastian awesome stuff ...yea I sucked at mods without help. I think I know what I'm doing now tho. I still want to get a junglas. I sold all my esee tho.
@@Bill-mw7sh Junglas is a fun chopper. And it has one of the best sheaths I've seen, especially for the money.
you gotta try frying that back strap in a good batter. It's a Southern staple here in the US.
Guys…when are you going to review the Cudeman 299b? I’ve been waiting for your review of that for a long time.
For a 'one tool option' I prefer a high saber grind and stainless steel.
I recently bought the ESEE 4 with the S35V blade. So far so good.
I have the Esse 4 and love it, easy to sharpen and extremely durable!
We can all get along together now.
Where can I find your music
It's sounds catchy and reminds me of the mid 90's in USA
I sold my 5 Esse knives. I use to carry one to work and got tired of sharpening it every night. Their 1095 has no edge retention and to say a survival knife well i hope you dont try surviving very long with it. I ended up carrying a Kabar BK18 harpoon made of 1095crvn and i bet edge retention is atleast 5 times better.
BK-18 is a nice blade. After I've cut iced tofu & sliced iced German pork knuckles for many times, it's still sharp!!! It works much better than Kinmen kitchen knife. BUT the finish & Qualiry Control of Kabar are not stable. You may need to choose a good one from a store or get it from any good online supplier.
Oh yeah that Les Stroud saying. Get 5 times more reminds me of the saying ''2 is one one is none'' Heard that from the Marine Sniper platoons. Because there is always a possibility of losing something. And when you have one of something. It always tends to get lost. Kind of like having a back up knife.
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast
@@LosRiji ok....Totally different concept but a saying from the military too.
Nothing beats the Srk for price

Step 1 : remove the coating with acid ONLY ON THE BLADE
Step 2 : make a forced patina with vinegar on the blade
Step 3 : put a sharp 90 degre angle on a portion of the spine with a file
Step 4 : put on great ergonomic scale handles from the knife connection
Now you have a great knife, even if for wood stuffs I still prefer scandi grinds!
Cheers from France guys!
I did this with my laser stike ,.actually works better , without the coating. And surprisingly does not rust like I thought it would, I work construction outside 8 to 12hrs a day in all elements and this knife deff holds up
Guys, you really need to bring back the third DBK team member...the garden table. It needs its place in the conclusion
Hahahahaha
Please make video of RMJ Tactical Utsidihi
bushcrafting is part of survival. so..... it only makes sense for it to be able to do good in those aspects as well.
I know you guys have been spoiled by super steels but even with the edge damage I'm fine with the 1095 because I know I can sharpen it quickly. I know it sounds crazy but I really don't mind touching up my knives after use to me that's part of the maintenance and care.
1095 can be an awesome steel! But not at 55-57 hrc in my opinion
@@DutchBushcraftKnives that’s fair. And I know you guys still do like simple carbon steels for example the Becker and the opinel(technically a folding knife) are good examples.
I mean, it’s aight touching up a knife, but if it’s dull after doing some feather sticks, just stick to a Mora which has better edge retention at that point lol
Could you guys test the Toor Field 2.0?
Batch of 70 DBK knives already sold out on your website -- or you haven't listed them yet?
1095 is ok thats why I got 5160, It would be nice to see if 5160 out performed 1095.
