    12:47, the GB sprite is based on Sugimori art of Meowth, have no idea why it was redrawn for the physical print

      I think you meant 11:47, but you're right! It's Meowth's sprite from Red & Blue as well, not sure how I overlooked that one. That means they did have a reference for Meowth, but what I said about the sprite art being redrawn by Himeno is probably still true. Very interesting!

      The Japanese-only sequel that eventually got an English translation is so good....so many more deck possibilities, with the Team Rocket cards, some neat Japanese-only vending machine promos, and a lot more Gameboy exclusives. The first game has limited replay value because there are only so many viable cards and decks, and you just see a lot of the same cards each playthrough. But there are so many in the 2nd game, it feels like a real CCG where you are basically forced to just work with whatever you are lucky enough to get.
      The gyms are also a lot more interesting, with certain battles forcing your deck to be built in very specific ways (must include 4 Rattatas, only water energies, etc). You can't just modify your starter deck and make one other to counter its weaknesses and steamroll everything with one or two decks. Deckbuilding is a much bigger part of the experience.

    I used GB Ditto in my Eevee deck
    My only basic Pokémon in the deck were 4 Eevee and 4 Ditto, so Ditto always Morphed into another Eevee, allowing me to use more than 4 Eeveelutions in a single game
    Plus there was versatility there, since I ran 12 Eeveelution cards (2 of each of the 6 different ones), letting me have choices on what to evolve into to best suit the situation
    It wasn't the best deck, but it was a fun concept that worked fairly well for what it was, and I enjoyed using it

    I actually used the GB Marowak and GB Pidgeot to rather good success in playthroughs before. GB Marowak, I used in a Do the Wave Wigglytuff deck, where while not crucial, it served as a good way to max out the bench for Do the Wave. Coupled with Cubone's stalling ability and Jigglypuff's ability to also summon mons to the bench, the deck had a surprising amount of synergy. GB Pidgeot, I used in two decks that, admittedly, were rather gimmicky. The first one was an explosion deck utilizing the Pidgey line's whirlwind ability to slowly spread damage across the bench to then blow up the remains with Golem. This one worked okay-ish, but was fun to see when it worked out. The other one was a Gengar deck following the same general principle of spreading damage, but the goal was to then move those damage counters spread by Pidgeot and friends with Gengar's Pokepower, as well as picking off mons on the bench with Dark Mind. That last one, I remember very fondly because I based it on the attack Ominous Wind and it just happened to work out really well.
    Obviously most of these are still gimmicky, but I had lots of fun with the random nature of these two cards.
    I don't think I ever saw that Mew card. This was a really interesting watch!

      The mew card is only obtained by the card pop functionality in the game. Very unlikely that people agreed to meet up to talk about the game back likely because everyone was really young when they were playing it.

    @_Vengeance_ Před rokem +6

    Fun fact: Dark Raichu in TCG2 is a game-exclusive card that was never game-exclusive at all. Presumably, they turned it into a game-exclusive version because they couldn't code the attack properly, so they just replaced the coin flips with randomization. It still works the same way as it does in real-life (you may think it has a 33% chance each to deal 0, 10 or 20 damage to the bench, but it's actually a 50% chance for 0 damage and a 25% chance each for 10 or 20 damage).

      Zapdos (GB) can hit your benched Pokémon too, so it’s not a very reliable card... unless you have an all Zapdos (GB) deck, and that can completely demolish your opponents, with the only real roadblock being decks containing Mr. Mime.

    • @joshernsteen2066
      @joshernsteen2066 Před 8 měsíci

      Actually, Zapdos's attack can actually hit itself with the reason being somehow the card being accessible PRIOR to Nintendo finding out about the game in the first place. I believe that there is even an explanation provided inside of the game itself as well that even mentioned that Nintendo DID NOT program THEMSELVES as well. Actually, Nintendo DID NOT even hear of the game until I capped out fully ALL of the cards in the game as well. Actually the game came out JUST BEFORE Lass came out as well, which is why the game DOES NOT have it. Yes the card is ACTUALLY REAL as well!!!! Actually part of the script as well is that the ability of Zapdos can ACTUALLY hit itself as well, despite the person likely ever really seeing it themselves in person as well. I believe the text, possibly mentionned somwhere else possibly, even mentioned something about this exact video getting released later on, although they apparently DID MAKE sticker cards later on as well as we apparently have one as well.

    I would kill for any one of these, especially the legendary birds, to be printed as secret rares in a set or something. Outside of that, these are such cool novelties. I absolutely love them.
    As for how to translate the “random basic Pokémon” to tabletop, you either don’t and just make it clearly you can’t use them and completely keep the font and stuff in the pixel style, or you make it so you shuffle, then draw until you get the desired card.
    Would be a cool nod to some Pokémon TCG history!

      Also be careful on how you play the game, as it is designed to wipe out and completely block you from logging in with the same email address and also possibly brick any device that is being used to play it on, all in a single occurance of it happening when the screen is all blocks and the character is unable to move. The reason for it occurring is being read from index cards. I am honestly telling the truth here, and it will only make sense to you upon triggering it yourself.

    The GB Ditto and Electrode cards are unique in that they were created to replace cards from the tabletop game that couldn't be replicated in the Game Boy game; Fossil Ditto and Base Electrode. Fossil Ditto had a Pokemon Power, Transform, that effectively made it act as whatever the opposing Pokemon was at all times, except it couldn't evolve and Transform was always active even if they opponent didn't have it (necessary to allow it to act as another Pokemon if the opponent switched out.) It also treated any Energy Cards attached to it as any type, and Transform was disabled if Ditto got statused. The nuances of the mechanic were likely too difficult to properly implement into the GB game, so we got GB Ditto and its Morph attack instead.
    Base Electrode's Pokemon Power, Buzzap, allowed you to Knock Out Electrode at any time during your turn (before attacking,) and then attach it to another Pokemon where it would then act as two of any one type of Energy of your choosing. Another weird edge case where they likely couldn't get it working quite right and just replaced with a GB-exclusive card that could do something in the spirit of the original (GB Electrode having Energy Spike which let you search a basic energy from your deck and attach it to one of your Pokemon for 3 Lightning energy.)

    1:00 You can set this up and explode later with Golem. Magnemite is also a fair candidate, mixing energy is usually a bad idea but he only needs one to function. You can probably token Electabuzz by the same notion to stave off some Blastoise variants.
    The strategy is perfect against a stall deck because you can break through Chansey or Venusaur and knock out several Abra simultaneously. Exploding one mon twice, even thrice is made possible with defender.
    I tried Marowak for a short time but ended up with a Weezing build alongside Venusaur so I could abuse that trick with Pokemon center to keep him around a bit longer. Stacking 2 defenders means Weezing can not only jump the shark, but tank as much as 70 damage come your opponents turn. I suppose Poke flute could be used in place of wail

  • @MistahTopHat
    @MistahTopHat Před rokem

    Marowak can be used to take advantage of a mechanic in the gbc game. Normally, IRL, you’d have to mulligan and go down a card.
    Gbc game just allows you to draw hands until you have a basic. You can take advantage of this by running less basic mons than you normally would. You can even do just one of each for each evo line. This makes room for more copies of other good cards, but it’s harder to dig thru the deck for your basics and you’ll probably start the game with just one. Running 2-3 cubone and a ‘wak or two allows you to find your other basics much faster when using this strat. It’s a little convoluted, and still not a GREAT strat, but it is doable.

    I'd love for you to make a video on the second TCG game, I think it would be pretty cool to see how it compares.

    Ditto actually combos well with the legendary GB Zapdos, as you can only get 2 legally in game. I run lots of scoop ups and Mr. Fuji as well

    Just found your channel, am 11 months late, and love all of this; maybe the attacks that add Pokemon to the bench would help with a Wigglytuff Do the Wave attack strategy? I know that was decently competitive in the day

    You left out the part where you had to mail-order the _Nintendo Power_ guide to get the Promo *Venusaur* card, 'cuz if you saw that guide on a store shelf, there was a 107% chance the promo was stolen outta there!

    Tangle and jolteon were really good in the gb game. I made a turbo donk deck around jolteon since it can do a lot of damage with a double energy which eevee could use anyways. Tangela is more like a grass version of fossil magmar.

    Seeing the insane power creep of new cards is baffling.
    Old Chansey: 120 hp.
    New Slowpoke and Psyduck together: 250 hp.
    Wtf?

    Jigglypuff would have been possibly played to evolve into Do The Wave Wigglytuff, and the legendary birds are obviously good. It might be cool to check the sequel cards too?

    Marowak use: Setting up for Do the Wave Wigglytuff sweep.
    ...that's all I've got. And it's a huge waste of resources to do that, when you could just use Bills and Oaks to mill through, get WT set up and bench full in the time you got a Marowak evolved with 3 Fighting energy on it.
    BUT STILL. You didn't ask for a VIABLE use xD

    Marrowaks attack would be super useful if he's your last Pokemon on the field with none in your hand, and he's likely to be KOed during your opponents next turn. Using Wail would fill your bench and stop you from losing due to no Pokemon

    I loved this game and its sequel. The birds are fun to use but too bad they're late game cards. I liked playing haymaker decks but I would always go back to Lickitung/Mewtwo/Chansey. I miss this game.

    The only three GB exclusive card that was ever printed were Meowth, Venusaur, and Dragonite. The latter remains Japan only. In order any of the GB exclusive cards to be a actual physical card, the attack and Pokémon power effect had to be change from anything at random to required coin flipping as example of the GB Meowth card.

    Zapdos is so great if you have only one Pokemon, it does so much Damage cause it cant hit itselfe.
    Articuno is the best ballanced in Damage and Effects, but its pretty decent and Consistent. Moltres is pretty anoying and risky, but I love its Pokepower and you can use it to stall things out.

    Hmmm if you have gust of wind and the oppenente pokemon are walling marrowak, you could use wail to force some basic pokemon on their bench, and then use gust of wind to being them out and then get easy ko's? That's the best I've got for a use for that move 😂
