      It's not just that though. It can be described as "elegant" and "classic" but many aesthetics can be described that way. "Old money" is distinctive.

    I prefer to call this Heritage style and I love it. It’s classic Ralph Lauren, but that, my old favorite, brand has been cheapening their quality a lot, especially in fabrics. I wanted a brown pleated midi from there, but it was $400 and all polyester (it quickly went to half-price, no one else wanted to pay that either). I found a dupe for about $30 - if it must be polyester (I couldn’t find that dark brown in silk anywhere), I’m not paying silk prices for it. I’m loving Banana Republic for this Heritage style, its high-quality fabrics and construction, great fit and cuts, and no sweaty polyester or acrylic!

      @beautybonvoyage8624 Před rokem +3

      It seems every compnay is cheaping their products. But yeah, heritage style works more especially since thee days you have younger 'old money' that are being a trendy and flashy. Many celebs that ppl think are new money sometimes come from old families that got them into the industry in the first place, but they don't always like making it known.

    • @heels4heal
      @heels4heal Před rokem

      I second the Banana Republic new/old direction! It was also rolling down the hill with the quality and designs prior their rejuvenation a year ago. I couldn't be happier with their current styles and fabrics!

      So many brands have done this, using synthetics rather than more expensive fabrics, so disappointing.

    Interestingly enough, vintage shopping in small town is the best way to get hold of affordable ' classic pieces, whether its considered old money,' trendy look or not.
    ps. my grandmother gave me her Lora Piana shoes before she passed away and did not know much about it beyond the sentimental memories it carried for me. I guess I can rock them now.

  • @J_LOVES_ME
    @J_LOVES_ME Před rokem +18

    The one thing about these brands is that the products they make are absolutely superb and rich people pay more for the best quality -- and then they will wear these same clothes for decades. They don't "replace" things like a lot of us do because they buy quality and it doesn't wear out. Highest quality, made to last, best quality fabrics. Go to an "old money" home and you will probably feel the decor is outdated. They do the same with their decor, that's why. They buy all this super high quality, high end furnishings and top of the line finishes, and that is what they live with. Maybe this is dark paneling, or marble, or heavy drapes (made from silk) or whatever. They don't buy junk stuff, so they keep it a long time.

      To me Ralph Lauren is not old money it's very logo-driven. He does revive a lot of the old money aesthetic but he does so in quite a mannered way, he stylises it. I'm not really a RL fan but I can see the attraction. He basically does preppy and he does a kind of 19th century revival in riding clothes and floaty white women's dresses and blouses.

    I really loved your comment about Turkish - Italian DNA. Being a Greek archaeologist I can probaboy explain this: since the 8th century BC many Greeks/Ionians left the East coast of the Aegean sea and founded colonies in South Italy and Sicily. From then on, people were comng and going between the mother cities (now in Turkey) and the western colonies in Italy (and Spain).This may explain why your family's DNA points to the west... you are an Ionian lady.

    What's funny is the way people think old money has a look. I feel it depends on where you are from. In my early 20's (I'm 40 now), I loved Max Mara for classic pieces. The only thing I knew about it was that it had a nice classic look that I could keep forever. Well, the RTW line. I did/do love fashion but I'm an eclectic type of girl. Maybe it's because all I hear about is Chanel, Hermes and LV that at this point I see people mostly looking alike. 🤷🏿 I just hope people wear what they love label or not and go for great quality fabrics. Side note...there are so many brands out there that serves top quality without ripping all the money out of your accounts. Yes it will cost more than the trending sites but your pieces will last forever.

I have some of my Mama's blazers, her jewelry and photos of her all glam, she loved dressing up to go to lunch or family/friends gatherings. It was a fashion show and I loved it! Her blazers are mostly black or black with a subtle cream/white pattern and of course her favorite color red. I haven't worn any of them, it's too hard right now. And the brooches oh my gosh so unique as well as her earrings. I think there is a confusion as to what old money is. You either born in it or you are not. You might be able to marry into it and you kids have some old money lineage through your old money spouse, but you can't just become old money by wearing clothes and doing certain things. And not all old money is mega rich, you have a lot of new money that are wealthier than many old money folks. They get by mainly on privileges and being in power positions and countries being nostalgic to them because of their ancestors. Some money that some old money have are dwindling if it's what has been earned years ago and the business or the industry is no longer booming. Though you do still have many who pivot with the changing times and still stay on top. but you have loads of millionaires and billionaires now that are first generation wealthy and not coming from old money. Sometimes old money marry those folks to stay rich if they own money is sinking.

    If I was aiming for a true old money aesthetic, I would have custom clothes made and avoid looking off the shelf. After that, I would look for unique, one of a kind designer pieces and then fill in with tailored classic brands. But looking blue blood is inherent--you have it or you don't. Today's old money included old timey new money without any lineage.

    I don't know why, but lately I can't stand any logos even if they're small. They look tacky to me and they date the outfit, same with trendy patterns. If you look at Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy from the 90's, she still looks fashionable today. She popularized the "no make up" make up look as well. I think today everything so overdone in a "look at me" kind of way and people are starting to get sick of it, craving a more natural, subtle look where the quality speaks louder

    Well, teenagers always consider what the adult women of the day are wearing to be “old lady”. It’s as adults that we come to appreciate and value the stellar quality of these brands, and their classic styling. Even if I could afford it, I don’t think I would want to spend that much on these ultra-luxury brands, but I will spend quite a bit more than fast-fashion prices for the best fabrics. I live in one of the wealthiest, and most highly-educated, counties in the US, and the few very rich I’ve known here dress down completely, not wanting to stand out too much (except for their million-dollar cars, apparently). They wear mostly jeans and black gym clothes, like most others here, neither of which I like. Black or gray gym wear, or anything Patagonia, is the local uniform, but I won’t conform to it, my excuse is “I’m older, I can wear what I like” (age 62, California).

      I wonder if it’s a reaction to off the rails fast fashion as well. Many people feel guilty about their overconsumption and rightfully so, so it makes sense to me that they’re getting more interested in top quality fabrics in timeless styles.

    Lacoste is American Prep. Old Money is really aristocracy or WASP fashion but 80s Prep is moreso what people mean, like Gossip Girl instead of Kate Middleton. Lacoste watches are one of the cheapest designer watches and look uber prep.

    Honestly, I simply like quality and sophistication and I just love these brands BECAUSE of quality and sophistication. I'm not a logo-girl, that's not my alley - I have a Chanel and I rarely use it due to the CC. I rather use my Hibourama bag.

    I’ve bought the loro piana loafers… everyone said how comfortable they are…. But I’ve have not found this is the case for me. I feel like they rip the sides of my feet and I can barely wear them!!! Maybe half an hour tops! Biggest waste of money ever!
    I’ve also started to really like ferragamo shoes. Especially the ballet shoes. I think they look more elegant than the Chanel ballet flaps

    I wonder will these TikTok old money vibe brands be less “old money” when they get popular?
    Haha 100 Capri drag is so funny. There is so many things I genuinely like but these guys put me off (I’m a guy btw). I got Tods that I fell in love with and took me 2 years to wear them & stop caring about that association

    It"s easy if you dress like Her Late Majesty, QEII; Catherine, POW; Sophie DOE; and Anne, The Princess Royal. Don't dress tacky like the Yacht Granny. I absolutely knew nothing about designer brands until about six months ago.

    I love the OM brand's styles but I feel weird when I wear some of their peices.
    Before Max Mara became mainstream famous, I had found a mid length pea coat by the brand for a whopping $4.50 cad at a thrift store. It was a beautiful coat but I rehomed it the next year and now I kinda pinch myself for letting it go because that was one of the few items that didn't make be feel self conscious.

    Just a point about Italy....live in the near in the Alps and traveled 10000 Times to Milan, Florence and actually all Italy etc.
    In general its the tourists who dress that way...the italians dress pretty simple and definetely not stylish or expensive. If you in smaller italian Citys you will see this. In Milano or Verona you will see tourists all over the World. Just watch Videos on CZcams they ask people how much their Outfit costs...99% are from all over the world, but not Italy...
    Same with Paris...

    "If you know.. you know" kind of fashion is nothing but inflated ego's trying to get attention and impress strangers that don't even like you. 😎
