In The Simpsons, it established early on that Krusty the Clown was illiterate, but they later retconned it and now he can read as if he never was illiterate in the first place. Eg. "Tonight I'm going to suck... [pauses to read the next cue card that reads "Your Blood"] your blood!"

So to my endorsing of the word RETCON it’s : wen the reader gets a new information in the middle of a book or in the beginning of a new book the new information give different meaning to the store line , the change is in the radar hades not in the history in the book
Change from the original idea which the story is never happen before.

The best recent example I can think of that was retconned is the Halloween franchise. Anything they made after the original 1978 film now doesn’t actually exist.
Katy keenes younger sister “sis” (as she’s known to everyone) 1945-1960s age 7 years old.
Since the 1980s retconned as 15 year old usually named Melissa while Katy and the others like lucki lore I’ll and Gloria grand bolt are still the same age

A good example of retconning would be the boy in iron man 2 in the iron man mask was retconned to be Peter parker that was never part of the the mcu continuity now it is confirmed by tom holland

So if I'm getting this right, Fight Club would be one of the heights of the art of the retcon, as would Sixth Sense, Memento, and perhaps The Usual Suspects. Inception would be a notorious example of single-story retconning to the point of absurdity - and thus now a trope.
Or maybe there's a better word for a story that deliberately retcons itself from the beginning? Does the Back to the Future franchise employ deliberate internal textbook retconning? Could we argue that those movies ultimately helped inspire Inception even more than The Matrix?
These are my thoughts and questions :)
good question. i don't know the answer, but i have something to add. there's another narrative technique called rashomon effect, which is when the story is showed in multiple perspectives. it goes back to 1950, the japanese movie rashomon. it's about the murder of a samurai, the plot is about who's telling the truth about what happened, and everybody tells a different story. it also reminded me of the usual suspects.
Metal Gear Solid is full of retcons. Big Boss was never Solid Snake's dad until MGS but that retcon actually did give Solid more depth so I don't mind.
The Boss while a decent character in her own right is not a good retcon because her history and her existence convolutes the shit out the Metal Gear mythos. Never in the series pre MGS3 was she ever mentioned anywhere yet she is supposed to be the catalyst for why everything bad in the MGS universe. Plus she helped the Allied forces win WW2 and Solid has never even heard of her? The fuck?
Well that is, if I recall correctly explained in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which could perhaps be more accurately called "Metal Gear Flexible 4: Retcons of the Writers"

Reminds me of some shady manga that never really crosses the line, the main character gets up and eats his breakfast and goes to school and has 12 erotic encounters along the way having full on censored sex, and then he abruptly stops daydreaming and finishes his cereal before actually getting on the bus and then he gets cucked before the chapter ends just to make you click next chapter.
Man I hate that crap.

Retcon is a con man who also plays a Retribution Paladin in WoW, hence "Ret-Con".
The new Star Trek movie franchise retconned in the first installment to erase all canon, and free them self up to start from scratch.
So is "I am your Father" by Vader a retcon then?
no it's just a plot twist lol because they didn't go back in time and change something so it was different in the present if they went back in time and altered the story like for example if they turned luke into a girl that would be a retcon because your altering the present and making something that didn't happen in the past become reality in the present and altering the way things are

Particularly because Starwars wasnt made with Empire Strikes Back in mind, so because there was no hints towards it being canon, it was then created for the sequel. It doesnt nessecary contradict established continuity, so it works
