hey dude was always my cue to go outside.
Same
I had a crush on Melody (Christine Taylor), so I just kept watching for more of her. I also had a crush on Clarissa (Melissa Joan Hart) so I watched both those shows religiously.
Well then I guess it was good for something.
I think it was more for weirdos.
watch out for those man-eating jackrabbits and them killer cacti.
"4 Nick Sitcoms: You Can’t Do That on Television, Hey Dude, Clarissa Explains it All, Salute Your Shorts and the Adventures of Pete and Pete"
[counts on fingers] ...heeey, wait a minute!
Looks like someone failed math.
PinkiePie97
1. You can't do that on television
2. Hey Dude
3. Clarissa Explains it all
4. Salute your shorts
5. The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
I think it's Nostalgia Critic who failed math.
ThatWhiteGirlDoes, I think PinkiePie97 was referring to the Critic as "someone".
I'm Very Angry It's Not Butter I was.
I'm Very Angry It's Not Butter "The Nostalgia Critic looks *ARE* 4 Nick Sitcoms..."
Every 90s kid dream was to get covered with green slime
That was my dream too.
I went 3 for 3 on "Boy or Girl!" I feel accomplished.
***** So did I, but I watched almost all the episodes, so it was easy. :)
*****
How much you want to bet that last girl turned incredibly hot?
FedorovAvtomat I'm going to Google that ASAP
FedorovAvtomat what is her name?
XellDincht
No clue, that's why I called her "the last girl".
“Boy or Girl”, the game every anime fan has to play.
I found it. I found the anime comment.
Boy or girl,
I'd hit that.
Are you talking about all anime or just Ranma 1/2 LOL
"Boy or Girl" Deluxe (NEW LGBT MODE) NOT!
it’s been two years, but I assure you whatever answer comes out does not change my attraction
Sitcoms: a genre that's still trying to hold up.
Brandon Roberts Sitcoms are an extremely difficult genre to do, especially anymore with how crowded some channels are with older ones. For one you have to grab people in with a good premise and characters, but then you have to follow up with good enough stuff to keep people. A lot of them do it so poorly it's kind of sad.
***** Everything is "reality" tv now
Mattybot 3000 Yes sadly it is, and bad "reality" TV at that.
Mattybot 3000 Which seem... at times, more cartoony than the cartoons themselves, when it comes to their target audiences.
RedsDead21 and the ones you like get canceled half the time with stupid stuff
I swear I feel like he did this whole video to pay tribute to Pete & Pete... which is fine, because it's f**king awesome...
Yeah, apparently in one of the episodes, one of my closest friends starred in it because apparently time travel is possible. The person at the far left shown at 17:24 looks eerily familiar to me. Almost IDENTICAL. Maybe a coincidence, maybe there really is the time machine that is the one true Delorean.
+Ninja Army That's not time travel, that's the magic of Pete & Pete
Fun fact: The older Pete was Jeff in Home Alone.
@@coolnerdlll6053 and Little Pete went onto voice Arnold on The Magic School Bus.
2:59 Or, as it's more often called, the Professor Oak game!
Rowan to Oak: Oak, didja hear about the trouble Officer Jenny got into for pulling over a black kid? How weird was that?!
Oak: Because he was...
Rowan: ...Black.
Oak: Ohohohohhohoho, pardon me, Professor, sometimes I don't even recognize gender!
"It was a different time"
"Hmmmm boy or girl"
*time never changes*
You must be confused
I still maintain that Salute Your Shorts was pretty funny, at least at times.
An example that always makes me laugh is from the episode "Budnik and Dina in Love"
Dina: "Bobby, my sweet, is that love in the air?"
Budnik: "Nah, Ug is burning trash again"
And Doug didn't even mention the theme song.
It had it's moments but a lot of it was cringe
A drake and josh review/vlog series would be awesome
Acleus It would be. I think it would also be interesting if he were to a whole episode on all of dan schneiders shows.
***** He got rid of the cutoff date when he started doing nostalgia critics again.
***** 1st it wouldnt be past the cut off date now since that show is over 10 years old but i dont think it matters anymore since he just did a review of jurrassic world Jupiter ascending and tmnt 2014 i dont think he cares now
Acleus Oh come on, there's no meat to that show to warrant an entertaining review, let alone a whole Vlog series. He Vlogs shows like Adventure time and last airbender because they are super complex in each episode and give doug and rob a lot to talk about.
If they reviewed Drake and Josh, the every Vlog would be:
Doug: "So, Drake was a douche and Josh got the short end of the stick, but they
worked it all out… again."
Rob (looking super bored): "Yep."
I still think a Drake and Josh volg series would be cool.
I'm surprised he didn't talk about "all that" and "Kenan and kell". They were the best live action shows on Nickelodeon during the 90's
Found it. Thanks
Ethio Samurai All that is a treasure
Yeah what's up with that
Maybe he was just too old for it when it came on
He did, on his snick video
. . . Elephant.
*burger king appears* *opera voice. * AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.
Elephant-S! (Burger King dosent appear)
I am so glad that the Burger King I go to doesn't have that Mascot.
*The Burger King appears* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *and then The Burger King disappears*
Wilderness Jungle king Burger
I love it when he talks about 90's shows, feels like he's describing my childhood.
Dear lord, that thing about blowing up cars with psychic energy, and "it only worked once". I laughed hard at that. Especially with the Critic's reaction.
I never realized it at the time but there were a lot of celebrities' doing supporting roles. For example:
15:03 - Steve Buscemi
17:13 - Gordon Gano - Lead singer of Violent Femmes
17:24 - Janeane Garofalo
Everything I know is after his time. You know, iCarly, Victorious, Drake and Josh, Amanda Show and Zoey 101.
I'm, I'm so sorry.
I loved adventures of Pete and Pete. It was so weird and the guest stars were all really cool. Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, and Michael Stipe were all on the show at some point
So was a very young Selma Blair. I enjoy going back through the shows and seeing well-known actors I missed.
How did I miss this?! I watch all of his videos 17 times over, and yet I somehow missed this!
I watched this one 18 times cause I like to go one step beyond

Ahhh, my wonderful childhood memories. Salute Your Shorts. Those were the days. ❤ And Clarissa Explains It All?! Now that's what I call a nostalgia blast!
And The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
I want to make a TV show that appears to be a typical kid's sitcom but it'll just go really dark all of a sudden. If I made something with the same premise as Hey Dude the first episode would start out with the kids learning to ride horses and then when they get back after some mediocre comedy routine they'd be putting the horses back into the stable but three of them stay with the horses and tease them when one of the kids gets kicked in the head by a horse and dies so the other two panic and try to hide the body in the desert because they're afraid they'll get the blame.
But where would you go from there?
Leopard Queen They get found out and it becomes a prison drama.
Lobstromonous Entertainment yes.
So would it be a prison drama with a kid's sitcom opening/promos? It sounds like the ultimate troll.
I like it.
Lobstromonous Entertainment the opening and the kid dying could actually be a kid sitcom. it's a premise done in kid shows before. just have no blood in the episode, have the kid just be unconscious but have the cast believe he's dead, and hijinxs ensue. it was done in a good episode of spongebob.
How did Doug not make any Alanis Morisette jokes?
I love her!
I loved You Can't Do That on Television as a kid (I didn't even realize the Canadian thing). It was pretty edgy, if you think about it, and some of the humor was a little dark in retrospect. I mean, every episode had a kid about to be executed by firing squad, in a torture dungeon, etc.
There were some envelope-pushing jokes, such as in the drugs episode (yes they did an episode with humor about drug addiction showing kids hitting themselves with pies as a metaphor) one boy was going to get married so he could "do it with girls." It was also meant to be a kids' version of Laugh-in, with blackout sketches, the locker room jokes was similar to the comics on Laugh-in popping through doors in the set, and "I don't know" was based on "Sock it to me."
"I am madly in love with you."
"AAAAAAAAAAUGH"
clarissa was definitely one of my first crushes. one that was close in age anyway.
I know it comes later, but Drake and Josh is still my favorite of Nick's live action shows.
Mine, too. Got into it in high school.
Ya,Drake And Josh was better than most modern Nickcoms.
Kennen And Kel?
Also very good.
+Logan McNeal -- It was better than most Nickcoms, period.
My brain is melting with all the memories I thought I had forgotten flooding back into my brain! So... much... nostalgia.
“It only worked once.“ made me laugh more than it should have.
I wonder if Doug knows the creator of, ehm, Doug, said that the TV show in question was a timeless classic and he wishes it's kind were on TV instead of shows like Gravity Falls...
Um. Yeah. Fuck that guy. I love Doug, but I have to admit it can't hold a candle to Gravity Falls.
I don't think you're allowed to declare your own show a classic.
Halen2020 Especially in comparison to a modern cult classic like Gravity Falls...
Why're you saying that on this video? Doug was on the previous video.
MegaSpideyman He did mention it at 8:09
I had a huge crush on Melissa Joan Hart when I was a kid 😍
Same
Clarissa Explains it All Was my All-Time Favorite Nickcom
If the nostalgic critic did the boy or girl joke nowadays he would be crucified.
ChicagoJon LOL "nowadays". As if this came out in 1999. This came out only about 6 yrs ago. Thats how much our culture has changed (for the worse IMO) in such a short period of time.
Michael Martinez I think they meànt about more recent material, more so.
*****
Michael Martinez to be fair, 6 years is kinda like 50 years in internet time
Was just about to post it
Pete and Pete remains one of my favorite shows to this very day.
I never really did like that one much, but I loved Danny Tamberelli on All That.
Man, that Alec Baldwin joke at 16:32 aged like High Quality Fine Wine 😌🍷☺
"Supernatural ghost." Your redundancy is redundant.
Can somebody please tell Doug to watch the Hey Arnold eps "Parents Day" and the "The Journal"? Then he'll see the show is so much more deeper than what he says it is.
Or the Pigeon Man episode. That was a really deep one.
Or the new hey Arnold movie: the jungle one
Can snbbpppe please telll Doug hey aisdpdl day
I’ve played “Boy or Girl” in my high school more times than I can count.
Dude,I Was a Weird Psychological Train Wreak as a Teenage Girl,Ages 13-19 Were Fucking Insane Years For me
Jesus
The red head kid on "Salute your Shorts" from Terminator 2 is also the little red head kid on the last 3 seasons of "Diff'rent Strokes".
THE NOSTALGIA FEEEEELS!
Don't worry Doug, I was a ginger Pete in the age of "The Adventures of Pete&Pete"
I get your name/show struggles.
P.S my brother and dad are named Doug. Which made it semi funny for me.
But Pete and Pete is awesome.
@@jeremyusreevu237 it's one of my favorite shows of all time
THE ADVENTURES OF PETE,DOUG AND DOUG JR.
Hey, Doug! Do you think you could do updated versions of Nickcoms and Nicktoons?
I'm about the same age as Doug, but man, was he ever a kid? Of course those shows are terrible, looking back at them now (or 7 years ago, or whenever he originally posted this), but in the pre-internet age, 8-, 9-, 10-, 11-, whatever year-old kids watched these silly shows and probably enjoyed them. Shows about kids, starring kids, back then were still relatively novel. Also, kids tend to like terrible TV shows, because watching TV was better than sitting in class, doing homework, or doing chores. I feel like in other videos, Doug does a better job of reviewing with a kid's perspective first and then an adult one later.
Anyway, I thought it was funny he put the clip from Hey Dude where Buddy complains he's turning into his dad, because when they did the Hey Dude 25th year reunion, it turns out that the actor who played Buddy ended up looking a lot like Mr. Ernst.
You know what? Even growing up on a horse ranch, I HAAAAATED Hey Dude and thought it was literally the worst of the worst Nickcoms.
Big time rush was a master peice mostly cuz it had no laugh track
Zoey 101 and Ned's Declassified didn't have a laugh track either.
Spectrum Storms those 2 are better
14:56 Nostalgia Critic never made me laugh harder at his sounds XD
“They’re just standing around; talking! That’s all they ever do!” -Leonard Church
Pete & Pete was so brilliant, so stupidly awesome, that intro song was so good, the characters so relatable, so lovable, the dialog so smart, I still can't get over it.
*I LOVE PETE & PETE*
+ApexCactus On The '90s Are All That, only the shorts ever aired. But on the newly-rebranded The Splat, it's the first show the new block will air
it's still one of my all time favorite shows, it's funnier to me now in my 30s than it was in my teens
Always nice to see where a running joke originated.
I loved Pete and Pete. It was just so awesome.
Pete & Pete was the shit, I didnt even remember about it, gosh you bought back good memories!
man, pete and pete was such a great show, i was at the fortunate age to watch it as both a pre-teen and a teen (thanks re-runs!) and i got two completely different perspectives of what was going on in the show based on my own level of humor and personal struggles at the respective ages...i might go marathon a bunch of episodes now and see if i identify with the adults more at this point in my life
5:55 Elephant.
I used to love salute your shorts
Correction! The adults where Abby Hagyard and Les Lye! Christine McGlade was one of the kids. She started with the show when it was still a local Canadian show. Christine was getting close to 18 when the show was bought by Nickelodeon. Also Fun note, The original adult Female role was played by Ruth Buzzy. Abby Hagyard didn't come along until the show was purchased by Nickelodeon.
While Les Lye did the adult males on the show, the female adults were actually not done by Christine, but were played by Abby Hagyard. What's cool is that Christine went on to be a digital media executive in Canadian television later on as well.
Channel Awesome What happened to the Nostalgia Chick ? Her videos were great, I would love to see more videos with her in.
One of my favorites was Clarissa explains it all.
Now I have salute your shorts then song in my head like crazy
The "boy or girl" game is hilarious!
I'm honestly surprised to see no SJWs on here trying to PC up this video by getting upset over the "Boy or Girl" section of the review. Nice change of pace! 👍
You clearly haven't checked the comments enough.
Pete and Pete was my favorite too but I also enjoyed Clarissa and Salute Your Shorts.. in later years I also enjoyed Josh and Drake.
AI love these Nick Sitcoms! I wish these were back too!
I have vague memories of watching You Can't Do That On Television as a wee youngling. I think all I ever remembered was the opening sequence. But all these other shows I do remember, in particular The Adventures of Pete and Pete. That show was weird and strange and I loved it! You forgot to mention the best part though. Pete and Pete had like the most awesome theme song.
if only he'd do this video again now
Nickcoms turned into shitcoms, EM I REIGHT?1?111??!!!???!!
Erm..
They've always been shitcoms (except for drake and josh and pete)
No it's amiright, gets your facts strait.
Fire Starter Giles even those i couldnt stand watching :P i admit those 2 shows were 100000x better then most of the sitcoms they had before and after them but i still couldnt get into those shows i guess i was and always well be more for animation and anime shows even tho in my adult years i do watch more live action shows then i did as a kid but still prefer cartoons and anime and the majority of my live action tv shows are things like discover channel animal planet spike tv history channel ect shows lol
darkmanknight1I don't give a shit.
Fire Starter Giles You're goddamn right
Hey Dude was the only Nickom that I changed the channel for as a kid. I just assumed I was too young to understand the entertainment value. Born in 85.
".. or the fact that they are both named Pete. I mean what the hell? What parent would be so cruel"
A friend of mine is Danielle and her brother is Daniel. Oh, her brother is a Jr, so her father is Daniel as well. Her mother calls them all Danny.
Whoever typed the description was drunk
3:02 This game would be more fun if played on some animes
I loved every one of those shows growing up. Clarissa explains it all was my favorite. I did try to watch Hey Dude and Salute Your Shorts recently, though, and they didn't really hold up, but they were good memories. The lasting impression Salute Your Shorts had on me was introducing me to the concept of wardrobe malfunctions a good deal before Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's Superbowl show. Most of the kids go to the beach, but Budnick and one of the others get left behind, and he laments how he won't get to see the girls' tops fly off when the waves hit them. Don't think a joke like that would fly on current Nick.
We only got like two of these early Nick shows in Germany back then and I'd say we didn't miss much but those Pete&Pete shorts sound kind of intriguing. Oh and now I can't get that Clarissa song out of my head either!
To be fair, I've seen a lot of boys in my Elementary School that had hair like the second boy you showed here, 3:23.
It was big in the 90's! :3
Can you do an NC review on Kenal and Kel?
why is "i just cut one" out of context so damn funny to me? i laugh so hard whenever i hear it
5:47 If it was unscripted, then perhaps it's because "I don't know" isn't a good way to continue a conversation and pretty much halts things. It's like saying an outright "no" in a skit. It halts conversation if you don't give alternatives or some way to really continue the conversation, and thus the skits wouldn't go on for that long with the kids always saying "I don't know". And so instead of someone off-screen going and giving trouble to the kid(s), perhaps they thought the Nick Slime would be a fun, interesting, on-screen alternative?
Oh, so that explains the Burger King joke.
7:35 Yeah, nobody has ever done that before *cough** cough* Honeypop
Pete and Pete..... man that takes me back.
I remember the Nickcoms videos.
Nostalgia :)
Amanda Show and Drake and Josh
who cares?
Both 2000s shows.
Its like a mix of bill gates and velma from scooby doo
14:27: What episode of Salute Your Shorts with the Nickelodeon slime covered soccer ball was that?
Does anyone know of any online source of full episodes of Salute Your Shorts. I've found them impossible to find. There are two or three eps on CZcams, but they're divided into parts and all of them have at least one part that has been deleted. Anyone?
I wonder what Doug thinks about the Nick Shows the 2000's kids grew up with, "The Dan Schneider era", like Drake and Josh, The Amanda Show, Ned's Declassified, etc.
InfamousJJ I'd LOVE to see him do an episode on that. Amanda Show was weird in the best ways, Ned's Declassified had genuinely useful tips and was wonderfully surreal, and Drake and Josh can really only be described as a roller coaster. It started out fun and relatable, then devolved into straight up insanity. Every Dan Schneider show after Drake & Josh sucked, though.
Dan get-in-the-van, spread-them-wider, the-particle-collider, Schneider.
Cole Lipe LOL. I've never heard that before.
3/3 on boy or girl
Robs performance in this cracks me up, classic
Damn now I have to go watch old episodes of Pete and Pete.
aboot... ooh... Trevor Phillips wouldnt like The Nostalgia Critic
Does anyone besides me remember My Brother and Me or Space Cases? Please don't say no. :-\
Melissa Joan Hart was a Nickelodeon star way before she played Sabrina on an ABC sitcom based on an Archie Comic. She even was a voice actor starring in Sabrina: The Animated Series which aired on weekdays and Saturday mornings.
She couldn't even act. My sister was obsessed with Sabrina, I thought it was the worst most unfunny horribly acted show I've ever seen.
No one called him Bobby, they called him Budnick
The mother on YCDTOTV was not Christine McGlade (Moose), it was Abby Hagyard.
James Fowler I remember watching the show, reading the credits, and wondering who she was since she was always listed despite there not being a kid named "Abby." Eventually, I figured it out.
James Fowler You are correct sir, and as a kid I actually liked the show myself.
sorry eh.
The adventures of Pete and Pete was a great show! So unique and creative.
I'm glad I checked this channel~
5:00 Yes, abortion is in fact legal in Canada... just putting it out there...
I have never met anyone who said a boot. weird
Sqribble Quill yeah he made a real stupid asshole of himself in that scene
Sqribble Quill for real, I don't what it is with Americans and them claiming we say aboot. never in my life have I heard anyone here in Canada say that
it seems like even the Canadians I know really said it as a boat
Sqribble Quill
my sister in law is from Canada and says the same exact thing. She swears no one in Canada says "aboot". She then follows that up by saying ". Those people just don't know what they're talking aboot." Not jokingly either. She doesn't hear it in her own or other Canadians accent. However, alot of them sure as hell do say it, accept it or not. Honestly though, most do NOT say it, or at least don't say it with that much emphasis. Actually the word "not" seems to be the biggest pronunciation difference between the US and Canada. Every Canadian I know pronounces "Not" very strangely. It's more like "noo-awwt" than anything. Thats my attempt at phonetic spelling. it kinda sounds like fought with more of an "ooo" sound.
A lot of you not all of you Candians do say you don't hear it when you or others say it. Different areas of USA has different accents and people don't hear there accent or people with similar accent. Like critic very much has exaggerated Chicago accent. I have partially Midwestern accent but picked up some of Irish tones of grandpa.
If I ever saw Pete And Pete or any of theses shows you mentioned I must have been about a year to 3 years old since I really don't remember seeing any of these shows except for Clarissa Explains It All and Mellissa Joan Heart definitely got a big career since then.
Wow lol. I remember seeing this. Kinda if I hadn't heard him call us suckers at the end.
