When I first heard Paul's gospel, that Christ died for my sins, was buried, and rose again, I had no clue what "turning from sin" was. If my pastor had told me that, I would have gone back to my old Catholic faith, which is faith in the flesh to finish off what Christ had started in my redemption. Anytime you add self-reformation to the gospel of the grace of God, you are telling God that you yourself are part of the salvation process and thereby you're insulting him to his face. "God has shut up all men under sin, that he might have mercy on them all."

I think by “turn from sin” they mean “understand that Jesus hates those sins and those small things that you think are okay”. If Jesus is cool with those sins then that is not Jesus Christ who forgives our sins. It’s a false god that we gave the name Jesus who can’t forgive sins.

That is a total misunderstanding of God and the Catholic faith. The Catholic faith does NOT teach “self-reformation”; Jesus reforms us and invites into the process. It is God and God alone who convicts, converts, regenerates, and legally justifies us, but it is through our relationship with Christ that HIS fruits are born in and through us, reform us, sanctify us, and ultimately fully justifies us, not just legally, but actually as He made us holy. It is through this that we remain/abide in Christ, enduring and persevering to the end so that we may spend eternity with Him. This is the actual faith as written in scripture and taught by the Catholic Church. It is sad to hear you were never accurately taught this.

The gospel call to faith presupposes that sinners must repent of their sin and yield to Christ’s authority.” In other words, a sinner who refuses to repent is not saved, for he cannot cling to his sin and the Savior at the same time. And a sinner who rejects Christ’s authority in his life does not have saving faith, for true faith encompasses a surrender to God. Thus the gospel requires more than making an intellectual decision or mouthing a prayer; the gospel message is a call to discipleship. The sheep will follow their Shepherd in submissive obedience.
      Jesus’ repeated warnings to the religious hypocrites of His day as proof that simply agreeing to spiritual facts does not save a person. There must be a heart change. Jesus emphasized the high cost of discipleship: “Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27), and “Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples” (verse 33). In the same passage, Jesus speaks of counting the cost;
elsewhere, He stresses total commitment: “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62).
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that eternal life is a narrow path found by “only a few” (Matthew 7:14); in contrast, some seek to broaden the path so that anyone who has a profession of faith can enter. Jesus says that “every good tree bears good fruit” (verse 17); in contrast, some say that a tree can still be good and bear nothing but bad fruit. Jesus says
that many who say “Lord, Lord” will not enter the kingdom (verses 21-23); in contrast, some teach that saying “Lord, Lord” is good enough.
      Paul and James
taught that a true profession of faith will be backed up by evidence of faith. If a person is truly following the Lord, then they will obey the Lord’s instructions. A person who is living in willful, unrepentant sin has obviously not chosen to follow Christ, because Christ calls us out of sin and into righteousness. Indeed, the Bible clearly teaches that faith in Christ will result in a changed life
      2 Corinthians 5:17
      Galatians 5:22-23
      James 2:14-26

      Matthew 18:1-5
At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3And said, Verily I say unto you, EXCEPT YE BE CONVERTED, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 WHOSOEVER THEREFORE SHALL HUMBLE HIMSELF as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
      Acts 3:19
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.
      How are we converted?
Paul recounts his conversion with Jesus.
      Acts 26:14-20
14And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 15And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
19Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
Verse 18 says that when God drawls you to Him, 7 things happen inside of you. Your eyes are opened, and you turn from darkness to light (this is referred to as conversion) This is repentance a change of mind about your sinfulled life I believe and that will result in a change of direction.
Conversion is the change of direction.
So your eyes are opened you are turned from darkness to light, hence you are set free from the power of satan. You can only be set free from sin, by repentance which is the result of faith (belief) without both you haven't been set free from sin and the end result will be hell. You receive the forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those that are sanctified.
Verse 19 Paul says obeyed his heavenly vision and preached
      Verse 20
I preached that they shall repent (turn from) sin to God by faith and show evidence of their repentance (conversion
      by their deeds/works.
      (change of conduct)

The Free Grace doesn't downplay the importance of repentance. We just say it isn't involved in our redemption by Christ. We are redeemed by the completed work of Christ which is received by faith. Repentance is the first step of godly Christian living following our redemption. We also don't believe in a mere intellectual agreement of the facts. We believe or trust in Jesus to deliver on His promise to provide eternal life to those who believe. It's faith in Jesus and His ability to deliver on His promise.

Having positively examined the Free Grace position, I think it's correct in what it pushes back against. But neither any of the Free Grace advocates not Grudem have a correct concept on what "repentance" is. Luther said repentance involves two parts 1 Contrition for sin 2. Faith .. it's actually in the Augusburg confession. Nothing about turning from sins there..which is why Free Gracers are correct to push back. But the knowledge of sin via the work of the Holy Spirit using the law is essential otherwise being a sinner is a meaningless word and "Christ died for our sins" is meaningless...and faith isn't really in the promise of God.

The clearest gospel message in the Bible is when Peter shared the Gospel with Cornelius and his houseful of guests.
Acts 10:39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,
40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.
41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen-by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
It gives a word by word account of the Gospel being shared and people being saved.
Nobody made any promises, confessed anything, or repented from sin. They merely heard and believed every word Peter was speaking. The Holy Spirit’s presence guaranteed assurance of salvation to both Cornelius and his guests.
Why would anybody who heard this message in 2023 be exempt from assurance of salvation if they believed every word?

Acts 2 is the day of pentecost which is the start of the church.
It was the first time in church where some asked how to be saved.
      Acts 2:37-41
37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,(Including John)“Brothers, what shall we do?
38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off. (meaning gentiles) for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were
added to their number that day.

This twisting of His Precious Grace that we are seeing increasingly, was predicted in scripture.
    Jude 1:4
For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are UNGODLY PEOPLE, WHO PERVERT THE GRACE of our God into a LICENSE FOR IMMORALITY and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
    2 Timothy 4:3-4
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
    Jesus warned:
    Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

We are justified through faith in the Person and Work of Jesus. Yes and amen!
But I wonder why God commands us to do righteousness and justice through obedience to His commandments?
I participate in a Bible study group. A particular woman suffers from delusional suspicion that I desire her. She has slandered me to others, who in turn, also sin against me - even gossiping in such a way that has damaged my reputation among other evil things. These people say they are not to strive to obey the 10 Commandments as that would be denying grace. They say the Holy Spirit controls them and leads them in the way of love.
Yet they are some of the most evil “Christians” with whom I have had the displeasure of studying Scripture.
God’s moral law is the law of love. We have been freed from the bondage to sin (sin simply doing anti-love in thought word or deed) in order that we might walk in a new way of love.
Yet countless Christians are taught that striving by the enabling power of the Holy Spirit and freedom in Christ to love God and others through obedience of God’s commands denies grace. What damnable heresy.
Yes. We are justified by grace through faith. But before we are glorified, we are being sanctified. The entire New Testament is Jesus teaching obedience to the deepest level of the Ten Commandments. And what are Paul’s letters to the Churches and the other epistles all about? Well, how we are to behave and think and speak. Sprinkled throughout are dire warnings to believers that liars, thieves, sexually immoral, revilers, disobedient, murderers, etc., etc., will not inherit the Kingdom.
Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. God will not be mocked. Be doers of the word and not hearers only. Our congregations are absolutely full of false converts who say they believe and love Jesus but clearly do not know Him. They love their sin and they prefer to think that they can safely ignore Jesus and Paul’s teachings regarding how we are to operate as blood bought and paid for redeemed people. Your life is no longer yours. Put off the old self. Put on the new. What do we think that means? It means YOU and ME - all of us are to be DO-ing this walk of faith through obedience in righteousness and justice.
Now, go and sin no more!
I didn’t say that. JESUS said that!
Do we not understand? God’s moral law is a reflection of God’s perfect holiness - His perfect love! Do we reject it and call it a curse?!
No!! But it is a curse to those who are lost - those who remain in bondage to sin. Those are the ones who hate God’s moral law. But to those who are being saved, the Ten Commandments are sweet and pure and lovely and honorable and obeying them leads to the flourishing of men and to joy and true life.
But my sisters in Christ in my Bible study group believe the lie that they are not to obey God’s commandments and think that this faith is hugging and squeezing the Holy Spirit and seeking signs and wonders and chills up and down their spine.
Bringing up obedience to God’s commandments and it is as if I have become Satan, himself.
They scream, “Jesus is the end of the law! Jesus is the end of the law!
      No, ma’am!
Jesus is the end of the law for righteousness. Let’s not leave out the last half of that verse. And let’s not wrongly interpret the word “end.” Those who think the “end” connotes “no more” are deceived. The proper connotation is “goal.”
The Ten Commandments are the means to an end for righteousness. Properly interpreted, Jesus, like the moral law is become that end (goal) for righteousness.
Jesus didn’t come to abolish the law. He came to fulfill it. His fulfilling it was strictly that He be the unstained, unblemished Lamb of God for sacrifice. Just because He perfectly lived it (fulfilled it) dies nothing to change how we are to approach it other than that we are forgiven when we fail to live it perfectly. Just because we often fail doesn’t mean we aren’t supposed to strive to walk in obedience to the Ten Commandments. I mean, Jesus summed the Ten Commandments as love God and love neighbor! And the only way to do that is to know the word thoroughly and walk in obedience to it.
Paul shares LOTS of do, do, do’s and don’t, don’t, don’ts!
Listen to him. Listen to Jesus. Matthew, chapter six is loaded with moral law straight from the mouth of Jesus.
To obey Him is to honor Him. Do it!!
      Not for justification.
      No. Not at all.
But for sanctification and abundant life and peace!

Yes it does. If you think that in order to go to Heaven you need to stop certain sins or make lifestyle changes, you are to some extent trying to earn your salvation by being good enough. You are not resting by faith alone in the accomplishment of Jesus Christ on the cross as being all that is necessary to go to Heaven.

Repent doesn't mean to repent of your sins as the bible refers to repenting from sin or turning from your evil way as works (Jonah 3:10 - And God saw their WORKS, that they turned from their evil way. And God repented of the evil which he intended upon them. Etc) Also the word repent in the new testament from the Greek word "metanoia" (meta= To change, to turn or to shift. And noia = thought, or thinking) in other words means to change your mind. To quote the word repentance with the pre assumption or snuck premise that it means to repent of your sins is wrong and deceptive.

A few points/observations on this topic. We are saved by putting our faith in Jesus Christ as our personal Savior (e.g. John 3:16,36; 1 John 5:12) which is by Grace through faith (Eph. 2:8-9; Acts 16:31). Putting faith in Christ is simultaneously repentance (change of mind/metanoia) as turning from sin (the sin of unbelief, Rom. 14:23c) -- from trusting anything other than Christ as the Savior --, and now trusting in Jesus Christ as the personal Savior.
I think one key in understanding the issue and applying free grace theology properly is to differentiate between relationship with God (salvation which is permanent and immutable once entered) and fellowship with God (discipleship which is often a volatile experience in the growing process). Salvation is eternally secure once entered into that relationship as salvation was the work of God, ... He saved us (He drew us, He gave us the faith and He urged us to put our faith in Christ as our personal Savior, and He regenerated us, etc.) as is its (the salvation's) safekeeping the work of God.
But fellowship with God is always an invitation to cooperate, to be available to let Him do the work in us, through us, and for us, although He Himself actually performs that work in us, through us and for us (e.g. Phil. 1:6). The "normal" Christian life is one of growing in His grace and knowledge (2 Peter 3:18) and therefore living in fellowship with God (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, e.g. 1 Cor. 1:9, 2 Cor. 13:14, 1 John 1:3,7) which will result in an outward manifestation of a transformed life. But let's not forget the principle of 1 Sam. 16:7c.
If someone says that they are a Christian because they put their faith in Christ as their personal Savior, I look at them as a brother/sister in Christ. If someone tells me that they have anything other (pointing to good works, fruit, behavior, performance, a changed life, etc.) than solely Christ as their grounds of salvation, then obviously they are not saved, because they haven't put their faith in Christ as their personal Savior. And that's the scary part when people point to other things than their faith in Christ alone as Savior, because then their salvation is based on other grounds than belief in Christ as Savior. When I stand before God some day and if hypothetically the question was asked why I should be here in His presence for all eternity, then my only answer is "Jesus Christ, He is my Savior" as He died for me and paid for all my sins, ... it's finished, and I trusted in Him as my Savior (and my name was written into the Lamb's Book of Life at the moment/point of salvation). There's nothing else I want to point to, because neither he who plants is anything nor he who waters is anything, but He Who gives the increase (1 Cor. 3:7), ... the same for growing in Christ and performing the works He prepared for us beforehand (Eph. 2:10), ... it's all His work, ... I can't take any credit whatsoever and I can't and I don't want to point to anything other than to Christ as my Savior alone. God bless!

  • @jeffallanday
    @jeffallanday Před 3 lety +5

OK Grudem is again not representing what all Free Grace believe at faith. I even don't believe that faith is about reading facts and saying you believe facts. I do believe that faith is appropriating the believe as to oneself. In other words believing that Jesus died for my sin and raising from the dead. The personal aspect of faith is necessary and many in the Free Grace believe that including Jody Dillow.

  • @StorminNorman-p2b
    @StorminNorman-p2b Před měsícem

The simplicity of saving faith is what's so "difficult" about it. You either BELIEVE the gospel or you don't. You cannot believe in something you've never heard and do not understand. Belief is repentance. Metanoia (repentance) "simply" means to change your mind (from unbelief to belief). Salvation is a discovery, not a decision. The very first thing men want to do is make faith a work. One hears the gospel (maybe many times) and discovers they believe it. Saving faith is a gift from God. It's the only "proof" that you've been born from above. "Which were BORN, not of blood, nor of THE WILL of the flesh, nor of THE WILL of man, but of GOD." We are free! However, with freedom comes responsibility. Your Father will discipline you to the measure you abuse your freedom in this life. Not the next. You CANNOT be un-born! The absolute sovereignty of God is the most assuring doctrine of salvation there is. Not one's performance.

Here’s the difficulty with the gentleman’s thesis. He stated we turn from sin, we resolve to Christ trusting him for our salvation. This turning from sin is called repentance. If we are talking about repentance from sin we would have to conclude that one has ceased from the sin. If it is just confess or feel bad about it or determine to not sin we run into all sorts of difficulties. I think even the most hardline lordship salvation believer will concede that believers still have some sin. If the believer still has some sin how could they have repented? One might say, well they don’t have anymore big sins. Ok, what constitutes big or little and who decides that? Of course it’s the pastor right? The wages of sin is death, this big or little stuff leaves everything so unsettled. Death is the penalty whether a particular sin is big or little in our estimation. Now the way I deal with this problem is not by denying a believer their salvation if they have a sound profession but fellowship. If a brother or sister is fornicator, this is openly known to engage in this behavior we don’t fellowship with them. To hopefully lead them to stop doing that and thereby qualify for fellowship again. It doesn’t say in order to show them they never were a believer. It is a fellowship issue, the health of the body is more important than individual members. If you must stop some behavior or start some behavior and calling that faith doesn’t make it not works. It’s just adding the leaven of works to the cake of Faith by altering definitions to make words mean what you want them too.

You define it basically the same way I do. I was an agnostic before I was saved 47 years ago. I wasn't sure if God even existed or if evolution was the way we got here. I don't remember exactly how long it took but over a period of weeks or perhaps months God was working on me. I finally repented about evolution and believed in God as our Creator, but I still wasn't born again. It was soon after that "repentance" that God sent someone to witness to me from Isaiah 53 one night. I was shown by the Holy Spirit that the passage was about the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ for my sins. I refused to trust Christ that night but one week later I went to this mans' church and was led to Christ by him at the end of the service. So. my repentance and my faith in Christ did not really take place at the same time. It was not until I placed my faith in Christ for salvation that I was instantly born again and knew it. Btw, I never even heard the word repent before I came to trust Christ.

Repentance means that you realize that you are a guilty vile sinner in the presence of God,that you deserve the wrath and punishment of God. That you are hell bound. It means that you begin to realize that this thing called sin is in you and that you long to get rid of it,and that you turn your back on it in every shape and form you renounce the world, whatever the cost, the world in its mind and outlook as well as its practices and you deny yourself and take up your cross and go after Christ. Your nearest and dearest and the whole world may call you a fool or say you have religious mania. You may have to suffer financially, but it makes no difference. That is repentance. It becomes an ongoing way of life. The repentance that starts at salvation starts a progressive lifelong process of confessing sin. 1 John 1:9 we go on confessing our sin. The active continuous attitude of repentance produces the poverty of the spirit, the mourning, the meekness that characterizes true believers in the Beatitudes of Matthew 5. Repentance produces a new way of life, not just a different opinion of Christ,a new way of life. Those who heard Jesus preach knew what He was calling for. He wasn't asking them just to change their opinion about Him. They knew what Isaiah said when Isaiah preached. This is what Isaiah 1:16 says:wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight, stop doing wrong.17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.18 "Come now, let us settle the matter", says the Lord."Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. If you wash yourselves,if you make yourselves clean the progression begins internally and then manifests itself in attitudes and actions. Isaiah 55:6-7
Seek the Lord while He may be found,
call ye upon him while He is near: 7 Let the wicked forsake his way,and the unrighteous man his thought:and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy on him;and to our God,for He will abundantly pardon. He'll pardon when the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man forsakes his thoughts and turns to the Lord.
      2 Chronicles 7:14
IF my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS then I will hear from heaven and FORGIVE THEIR SINS and heal their land.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:1-4‬ ‭ESV‬‬
At the end you’re basically saying you need works to prove you’re saved, if you haven’t turned from your sins etc. How many sins? Which ones? Just the big ones or? Because the The apostle Paul specially says in Romans that it’s not of works, we are justified by faith alone, no works are needed at all. If someone believes Christ and dies 2 mins later, we would all agree they was saved as they trusted Christ, but all of a sudden you change it to believing in Christ and dying 10 years later, it’s about checking for the works.

@@not_worthless2813 it depends how you define repentance, some define as a change of mind and some define as turning from sin, like in Jonah 3:10 where they turned from their evil ways. This is not a condition of salvation, faith alone is though.
In the gospel according to John, the only book written for the sole purpose of convincing us to believe, it says believe over and over again, to lead us to faith in Christ. The same as in Paul’s defence of the gospel in Galatians, he never mentions repentance as a condition of salvation. It’s faith alone. Don’t let people double talk and say it’s faith alone but then slip works of the law in.
If we practice fornication or any other sin for that matter, we will lose fellowship with God and we will lose rewards and our joy etc but you will still be saved, yet as by fire. Paul never says you won’t enter the kingdom, he says you won’t inherit the kingdom. An inheritance is for someone who is already in the family, it’s about rewards, if he was speaking about entering, this would be a major contradiction as he says for by works of the law no flesh is justified in His sight and that it’s by grace through faith and not of works otherwise grace is no longer grace.

Salvation is never conditional upon anything, "turning from sin", etc. If it could resemble a condition, it would be agreeing with the Lord that your sins have separated you from God, and you are already CONDEMNED JOHN 3:18 "...already CONDEMNED"... Do to the commandments, and then BELEIVING on the Son. At that instant Christ LITERALLY SAVES YOU, COMES INTO YOU AS WELL AS THE FATHER, MAKING THEIR ABODE, AND YOU SIMULTANEOUSLY RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE SPIRIT. SALVATION IS SUPERNATURAL. THAT WHICH IS BORN OF THE SPIRIT, is spirit. Yes brother, no mental assent to facts, but a confession your lost condition, and BELEIVING on a person, the Son and His finished work for yourself . A new spirit, a new heart, constant battles between flesh and Spirit etc. The desire to please the Lord out of His eternal love for you, constraining you. But your explanation is surely different from others who hold this Lordship salvation (false doctrine) of conditional salvation or, repentance (turn from sin) which is literally impossible. You do not espouse Lordship salvation. You phrase it correctly, ie, BELEIVING on a person. Love in our perpetual servant ("but ears you have digged me", Psalms, Barry.

We (free grace preachers) downplay the need to repent of sin for salvation because there’s no such teaching in the Bible. Repentance for salvation is repenting of unbelief. Paul proves it here: “Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭19:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬
Repentance must be undertook in context. In the context of salvation, it always means turning from unbelief. In fact, God repented most in the Bible (and he never sinned).
Gruden says believers must have proof that they’re saved. Well what about these guys? “Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”-John‬ ‭12:42-43‬ ‭KJV‬‬
