New Traeger Pellet Grill | Burn Off | The Correct Way

  • In today's video I got a New Traeger Pellet Grill and I do the Burn Off the Correct Way. This little 780 is a nice pit and I am impressed with Traeger's controller so far!! Now so many BBQ influencers out in CZcams land buy a new pellet grill and do the burn off or seasoning of the pit exactly the way the manual says to do it. Well from my experience running multiple brands and models I have learned that there is a couple extra steps you should do to not only burn this pit off but also learn how the pit actually works. All PID controlled pellet grills improve after a few cooks so NEVER reply on how it runs the first time you fire it up!! I have seen a lot of Traeger pellet grill lids blow up during start up!! Please if you learn anything from me I hope you learn to leave the lid up until your pellet grill starts burning clean!! Thanks for watching and stay tuned because there is more to come on this Traeger Pellet Grill!!

      Ya this doesn't happen all the time on powder coated pits but it does happen on every brand unfortunately. I can't say that it still won't happen but out of all the pits I have had none of them have peeled. Thanks for watching and leaving this valuable comment for others to read!!

    Found this vid 10 mins into starting the burn off on my 780 at 350 degrees. I immediately turned it down to 250 degrees and am finishing the process by your instructions. Hopefully this helps avoid any paint peeling. Thanks for the great videos and advice!

Now this pit isn't the top dog but I am very happy with the controller and the features Traeger offers on that but it is not the best pellet grill I have cooked on to date but hands down it stomps the heck out of the last Traeger I cooked on a couple years back!! So good jo Traeger on this controller for sure!!! I appreciate you watching Rus!! Have a great weekend and I am sure I will drop you a line to see how that pork brisket turns out!! Will definitely keep temp lower as the sales lady said to immediately start at 350 degrees to burn off the oils for 30 min and then 500 degrees for 30 min. I like your recommendation. 🤙🏽

      Thanks James!! I agree, the last Traeger I have ran was an older Pro 22 model and honestly that was the first pellet grill I ever ran. Before that I cooked on charcoal mainly my entire life and always said no way am I going to ever buy one of those pellet poopers!! Well it didn't take long for me to go buy that Pit Boss 1100 so I could gain a little free time and still cook at the same time!! But this pit beats both of those hands down!! There are some things on the 780 that I think Traeger needs to add but wow this is the best controller features I have ever used! I still stand behind my Smoke Daddy PID controller as the best ever made but they do not have al the features that the Traeger has YET!! So Dallas if you are reading this, get on it brother!! hahaha

    Got my dad who’s turning 60 in a few days this model. Really tried to get him the Treager XL but sadly couldn’t afford it for payment plan. He’s an executive chef and had a really bad year last year with his health and job. But things are much better now so I got him this grill because some salesman at Costco sold him on the brand few years back and was all he would fantasize about getting even though with all my thorough research I know you mentioned the camp chef woodwind pro being a bit better. I couldn’t convince him.
    So got him this model since it’s the cheapest I could somewhat afford just gunna take a long time to pay off.
    But did all your steps for seasoning and baking and even though I’m a neighbor (Minnesotan) we had horrible rain all day today I managed to luck out and get a dry spell to do the seasoning times and temp increases and all worked out great!
    Tomorrow being Father’s Day he’ll be doing his first smoke and cook with it which he’s excited. He will be doing a rack of ribs and dry rubbed chicken wings.
    Great videos! Me and my dad watched a few of them while we waited on the cook times for seasoning. And really enjoyed them. I’m not sure if you’ve done a video on this. But I know other CZcamsrs have. But what brand of wood pellets do you tend to prefer?
    He is new to the pellet grilling scene so trying to be a helpful sous chef or whatever the term is for BBQing lol.
    Either way he’s excited for his first cook. And loves that he will be able to let it cook and monitor it from his phone since movement is what’s tough for him.

      Did his first cook with ribs and chicken wings today. And 100% love it. The ribs he made turned out amazing! Same with his chicken wings. But the ribs which im normally not a fan of ribs (braces ruined my desire for them) but damn these were good. We even found some sauce at walmart which never thought id recommend something from there but a sauce brand called “Blues Hog” their “Raspberry Chipotle” was amazing to dab with the meat. But meat alone was great as well!

    According to Traeger certain models with the rear downdraft exhaust do not need to lid open for startup. They have a little chart/list that helps you determine if you have to. I never open the lid on my Ironwood 650 (with the downdraft exhaust) just like Traeger states. No issues.

    • @txfieros
      @txfieros Před 2 lety +1

      On another note. I’ve owned three different brands of pellet grills. The best performing controller has been the Traeger. Even with no super smoke on the lower D2 models, the smoke production at 200 and below should be just as good as on my ironwood with super smoke off. Just a nice stream of steady stream of thin blue smoke.

    • @DeadBrokeBBQ
      @DeadBrokeBBQ  Před 2 lety +3

      Ya Krash the downdraft exhaust is suppose to eliminate this but my car has drivers assist and I don't trust that either!!ha ha But these fire up so quickly that a couple minutes with the lid open IMO is a better safe than sorry prevention. • @robertjackson7089
    @robertjackson7089 Před 2 lety +2

    I’ve owned several now
    Started off with the pro series and upgraded to the ironwood
    Like any other grill, again any other grill there are pros and cons
    They all have their place in bbq
    Let me say this
    As far as initial start up yes I would agree
    Now please don’t buy a pellet grill thinking it’s the end all to all end all’s of your cooking, cause they are not…
    If your skills are limited to opening a van of soup and adding water there grills will not make you to talk of the block
    However they are great if you want juicy moist tender meat with little effort you can’t go wrong
    Just remember as you transgress thru the stages there are lessons you have to master
    At the end of the day as long as you and yours enjoy the meal it’s all good no matter what your cooking on

    • @DeadBrokeBBQ
      @DeadBrokeBBQ  Před 2 lety +2

      Well said Robert!! Agree completely! The big thing I like about a pellet grill is 100% the convenience! Yes I miss the bbq that came of my old hand made offset but I do not miss the hours of tending a fire when I have other crap I need to get done!! I want an offset again to use once a month, yes I said once a month because with 2 teenage boys that are involved in every activity under the sun I just don't have all day to sit and drink beer in front of a fire box anymore. That being said when these 2 turds move out I will have something else to pass the time away until I got to finally hit the rack and get some shut eye!! Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment!!

    • @robertjackson7089
      @robertjackson7089 Před 2 lety

      I too will add another small offset, just finding the right one, lost mine in a divorce years ago but I sure don’t miss the fire management side, I’m also going to build a whole hog pit but to be honest either one of those will get limited use. I follow a lot of you guys just to get ideas of what to cook next
      So let me part with this
      Don’t cook boring food and you won’t eat boring food
      BBQ on my Man

    When I burned in the traeger, the manual did not mention seasoning the chamber at all, just burn off. I've been cooking about 2 years on it. Am I too late to the seasoning party? The food oils have coated the top half nicely, the bottom is a dry dusty brown. It gets vacuumed after each cook
