  • Motorsports and cheating go hand-in-hand and sometimes, it's a team simply exploiting a grey area in the rules. A lot of times, it has paid off for them, other times, it comes back to bite them. These are the Top 5 cheats in WRC rally history.

Very interesting subject. However two comments I wish to give here.
    1) The Peugeot disqualification was not Peugeot's fault and certainly not the FIA bonding with Peugeot. It was clearly a fault on the side of the Italian rally organisers. I write that in more detail as a reply to Ondra Spendlik below.
    2) The Ford boost tank. Note the Focus RS WRC03 with the larger bumpers did not come at the 1st round of the season, it debuted in Rally NZ, round4 of 2003. That then led to a disqualification after 3 rounds? Well, the trick only started in rd4 and I can see only one disqualification for Markko Märtin that year, which was rd10 in Australia. This disqualification was indeed a curiousity, it was however because Märtin fixed a spare wheel in the stage with a lose rock, which the FIA quite rightly saw as a dangerous thing to do, leading to disqualification. However this had nothing to do with the boost tank. If that would have been the case, surely the entire team would have been disqualified. To my knowledge there was never a disqualification because of the boost tank.

Just a side note to Peugeot. They were disqualified from Rally San Remo for the illegal side skirts. The organizers of that rally, being Italian, obviously wanted to help Lancia win. The season then proceeded, with Peugeot using the same side skirts and them being deemed legal by organizers at every remaining event.
Lancia and their driver Markku Alén won both championships in the last rally, but Peugeot protested the San Remo disqualification. FIA then decided they had a point and anulled the results of Rally San Remo (since Peugeots were disqualified before finishing the event, they couldn't just give them their points back, because unlike Lancias, they didn't finish the rally, therefore it had to be anulled). This happened 11 days after the season finale and it completely changed the results of the championship, with Lancia losing the title to Peugeot and Lancia's Markku Alén losing the driver's title to Peugeot's Juha Kankkunen. This made the end of Group B even more bitter.
Now, this was long before I was even born, but I gotta say, even as a Peugeot fan, Alén deserved the title just for being brave enough to push the Delta S4 so hard, despite tragically losing his teammates early in the season in the very same car. Too bad he never won a WDC title, he deserved one. But then again, so did Michelle Mouton and a bunch of other people.

I agree 100% with Ondra here, with only one exception: There were drop scores, only best 7 results count for the makes, hence even with the San Remo disqualification Peugeot was still leading the championship anyway. When Peugeot then won the RAC the final makes WRC standings including San Remo were Peugeot 137points vs Lancia 128points. It was all about the drivers title in that case.
However if the "nationalism card" comes in here, as far as I remember Peugeot used these side skirts already before San Remo in Greece, Argentina, NZ and Finland. Plus GB and USA, there were 6 events were the organisers saw the skirts as legal, only Italy, out of all of them saw it differently. Remember as well that at the time Peugeot had a legal battle against the FIA on a different subject, so there was no reason why the FIA should make Peugeot any favours.
There is also another reason why I see the "nationalism card" more with the Italians. Normal FIA procedure when a team appeals a decision is that the team can carry on "under appeal". The Italian orga did not allow that against FIA guidelines and ready was the next groupB farce. Instead of re-instating Peugeot's result, the FIA had no option but to drop the event from the WRC calendar AFTER it was run, a scenario that never happened again in the sport's 50+ years history. It clearly seems the Italian's did everything to boycott Lancia's arch rival to help the Italian make. While Peugeot did nothing wrong.

Lancia also had plastic roll bars not steel to reduce weight just spayed them to look like steel, they were also supposed to build so many street cars they just moved the cars from one spot to another to be counted, but then they are Italian.

Can you say what rally Ford got excluded because of the tank? As far I know, they never got punished as it was not illegal. All air came through restrictor. Also, as far I remember Toyota got caught because one turbo blow up and then they where caught.

Sorry, I agree here with @Rally Beast . I think most agree that this was one of the biggest cheats in WRC history. At least many journalists and insiders started looking for details, as jack brackets, windscreen securing brackets, that were different on the Mouton car before and after and are details that are not easily changed in limited time. But there was no proof....
Well, the reason there was no proof is that Audi then withdrew Mouton not far from the finish and at a point when the car was running fine. This way Audi avoided final scrutineering and further discussion. It allows however to wonder if Audi had to hide something, if this may already be partly proof there was some cheating going on.
