  • The Ducati Hypermotard is a fantastic motorcycle, the standard version is a reasonable £11,700. But the problem is there is an SP version but its £3600 more expensive... Is the SP version worth the extra money? Lets find out!!

    For the extra £3600 I would expect the Termignoni end cans as well. Very expensive when you consider the BMW S1000R with semi-active suspension and quick shifter is only £1100 more than the standard bike. Lamby forgot to mention the RVE comes standard with the quick shifter (the base bike doesn't). I own an RVE, and in my opinion the best value / bang for buck bike is the standard model with quick shifter, racing seat and metal footpegs added for an extra cost of about £600.

    I chose the SP as I realised I'd only go and buy the extras if I went base model. Price up wheels and suspension and suddenly 3k extra is a bargain.

    I think the correct answer is a slightly used SP, to my eye it had a nicer livery than the update. Either way getting the suspension setup to you should make it work wherever you prefer.
    Call me biased though because I'm picking up a 2020 this week.

    It's a category I'd always ignored, having owned everything from classics to out-and-out sports bikes, a GS 1250, a Tiger 900, etc. But in fact they are kind of the most fun for urban riding and short twisty blasts. I recently bought a Zero FXE, which may be a supermoto/hypermoto, and is the most fun, responsive and fastest bike I've ever had!

    I purchased the first S model in 2008 luckily someone in California made a 61/2 gallon tank for it and with that and a modified short windscreen I’ve toured all over the great southwest of America . My girlfriend ebenezer tours with me and we just love the hell outta the ride .It’s comfortable and gets a lot of attention ( both of em)! Best bike I’ve ever owned!!!

    Agree with everything you're saying. Owned every model in the current Ducati line up apart from a Multistrada also owned a KTM 1290 SDr. I had the 950 standard and it's hands down the most fun bike I've ever ridden bar none. Currently riding a 2022 Panigale V4 and even that doesn't make me smile like that did.
    Just ordered another 😊Standard is brilliant but this time round I'm going with the SP.

    • @philyoung3640
      @philyoung3640 Před rokem +1

      @@TierOperator Very different machines, the SDR felt a bit agricultural an doesn’t have the premium feel of the Ducati, in fact it feels and looks a bit cheap to me. SDR is a great bike though, more of an all rounder and more comfortable if you’re planning on doing longer journeys. For pure sexy fun though and enjoyment I prefer my 950SP that I now have. Turns heads everywhere I go, puts a huge smile on my face every time I ride it. The SDR was good but just lacked that special something, could never really put my finger on it. Power wise the 950 hits the sweet spot, it’s just right, loads of low down grunt but not too much that you can’t use and enjoy it on the road. The SDR had more but for me that’s what spoilt it, almost a bit too much. I prefer the handling non the 950 over the SDR too bit this is all just my opinion.

    I would not undersell the practicality of the Hyper 950. It's a tremendously practical bike- if the seat were slightly more comfy, it'd be perfect for a 200mi tour on backroads/B-roads. I can strap on a tail bag, tank bag and go. I love commuting on mine (rural commute) and taking the "long way" home at the end of a workday.

Now after 28k km I changed the bike with a Multistrada 4vS. I had a lot of fun with it but since I drive alot, sometimes 500km trips per day, I want more comfort. For sure I will miss the sound

    I gifted myself an SP for my birthday in May of 2021 after watching your review of it. It is everything you describe. I had the suspension tuned by Dave Moss, here in California. I'm alergic to the straight-line requirements of freeways because the wind blast is annoying, but on sweepers, turns and twisties, it's dream. I opted for a custom-fitted seat by Mike Corbin; they scuplted it to my butt, so I can use it to anchor myself at high speeds. The seat position is like riding a giraffe or an ostrich. Lane splitting is a giggle, and because it's like having a balcony seat, I can look down at drivers and all of their illegal shenanigans. BEWARE of Prius and Teslas!!! I replaceed the already excellent Brembo with Brembro Stylema, which must be Italian for Stop-on-a-dime; single finger pull - no problem. Lastly: I go to a very famous Northern California motorcycle hangout and this bike continues to draw the Oooooo and Ahhhhhh crowd. Of the many reviews that I watched on YT and communications with owners, yours was the most convincing.

    As a really tall bloke, I loved the height of my old 950 SP. That said, it's a really focused bike and not great for longer trips. My KTM Super Adventure's actually a bit nuttier feeling and obviously way more practical. Wouldn't mind having both though…

  • @tazpartridge1612
    @tazpartridge1612 Před 2 lety +2

    I bought a 2020SP after riding both.
    I'm a big bloke, and tall enough to flatfoot the SP.
    It felt a bit harsh when I first picked it up, but once I set the suspension up for my weight, that "harshness" disappeared and the ride is almost plush.
    The lighter wheels do make a difference.
    Here in Australia, the cost to upgrade to a rear ohlins and lighter wheels added up to more than the price difference, so I chose the SP.
    Our local roads are all B and C roads, no shortage of whoops and hollows interspersed with potholes, but all are nice twisties.
    Not disappointed with my choice

    I bought the base version hyper 950 in ‘21. A buddy on other side of town got the ‘22 RVE bike. Let’s be honest. Yes the SP has primo suspension & a quick shifter. The RVE looks beautiful and has DQS also. The base has damn good forks stock. I go thru the corners a little higher than legal. I’ll never be able to out ride the capabilities of the bike stock and I saved a crap load of $ while having the same amount of fun.

The roads are incredible with endless amounts of twistys to indulge in. I'm currently back living in Tasmania Australia where roads are world class & own a modified S1000XR Gen 2 (remapped & Akro headers), but I'm not satisfied. I got the 2022 SP.. with extra’s and modified the shit out of it - people will do the same on a standard or RVE so doesn’t matter as the spending never ends - both are capable of putting most nakeds/superbikes to shame both on road and track.. but both models need so much customisation to match the rider weight/riding style to get the best out of it - 70+ videos on my channel and I still got loads more to do 😂😂

    Anything after (821, 939, 950) was just marketing sugarcoating to sell more bikes at the cost of the fun factor.

    Really interesting vid & comparison. I think most Ducati SP's are genuine improvements on the base models & more desirable too but they're all just too expensive imo. There's supposedly a new Ducati Monster SP coming which I'm really interested in & I'm sure it'll be great but I'm equally sure it's also going to be really expensive for what you're getting. As you mentioned Chops, the V2 Steetfighter comes in to play which seems counter intuitive & odd marketing imo.

      @countbrapcula-espana Před 10 měsíci +1

      It's a Ducati. You get what you pay for. That's should never be a surprise. If price is a concern then that's why the market out there offers Suzukis and Yamahas

    • @ragerider6283
      @ragerider6283 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@countbrapcula-espana True enough but there's a point where the brand name only has so much reach in terms of what you actually get. Although Ducati is a premium brand so while I don't entirely agree you get what you pay for, you undoubtedly & understandably pay a premium for a bit of exotica. As mentioned though I also think Ducati's pricing among it's own models is a little too close for comfort in places which makes me question the value. Either way though it simply comes down to you are basically right & I am too poor lol!

      @ragerider6283 These things are always a sensitive issue for consumers. As a case just folks who know and can afford to pay for the Ducatis, then along comes MV Agusta and their bikes are more expensive than Ducati. I also think Ducati superior to MV Agusta. I can say owning Gen 1 2014 KTM 1290 R Super Duke and Gen 3 2023 EVO and compare KTM, a premium brand, to Ducati, the dealer network and customer service, that Ducati go out of their way to appease any of your concerns. I own a Pikes Peak V4 and Ducati always send over customer satisfaction alerts. That extra refinement is worth the hit in the wallet, for me. KTM, I love their products, but there is an air of arrogance with them. No bueno

      @@countbrapcula-espana Interesting. I'd favour Ducati over KTM, but haven't owned either brand yet. Rightly or wrongly I feel Ducati are just a bit more special as well as being more attractive, desirable & reliable than KTM's imo but could be wrong.

    • @countbrapcula-espana
      @countbrapcula-espana Před 10 měsíci +1

      @ragerider6283 I agree with you on Ducati being favored. I'm a huge KTM fan. I like their LC8 engines in the SDR 1290 and SAS/SAR. The one thing I have experienced and painful to the wallet is with the KTMs you have to put in the extra $$ or €€ to take the quality up a few notches. The specific parts with the KTM are the stock fuel filters, hoses, oil filters and O2 sensors. Those little things after replacement with Samco hoses, Golan billet fuel filters, titanium O2 sensors. The KTMs are slowly progressing away from their motocross agricultural minimalist mentality. You see this version by version. Ducati though is just so refined. The Audi influence shows in their improved reliability. KTM PR and dealer networking demeanor needs huge improvements still. Ducati's aftermarket pool with Ducabike, CNC Racing, Rizoma, Lighttech are vastly superior to KTMs limited market with their PowerParts dept. They need to allow a wider aftermarket.

    I have both a KTM Duke 890R AND a KTM SMC 690 R which is about right between the Hyper SP--and each great bikes in their own right, SO why I am wondering what about a SP to do both jobs? It would look nice in. the garage with my new Pikes Peak Multistrada which I am smitten with (Came from a Superduke GT which really wasn't optimized for 90% two-up riding). The PP just has refinement and best handling big bike ever. I think I would need a new Hyper model upgrade made lighter, for starters maybe. I hear Ducati has 7 models with upgrades for 2023 rolling out September-November. Just maybe.
