I ran into some problems with this pen display. They improved the initial activation rate at the pen but it also seems like it took a step backwards in terms of the actual drawing quality. This isn't so much a review but my process of how I went about trouble shooting the device.

Really good review. I liked how you put the device into the context of how you draw yourself. straight lines are really important and still the acid test of a good tablet. You've been doing this long enough that your opinion really counts, thanks Brad.

What a thorough review. Other sites exalted the new X-3 tech without mentioning the wobbly lines. While low activation force is a good thing, it's crippled with wobbly lines. I purchased a Huion Kamvas 16 (2021) and was surprised by the straight lines and very good low activation force. The activation force is low enough that I can get the finest lines in my digital pencil drawings. Another thing is the Huion felt nibs which provide excellent friction for pencil and inking. I still prefer the smooth nibs for painting.

    @xeanluxcrille6847 Před 2 lety +4

    Nice review! Thanks for this.
For the lines that are wavy/inconsistent, I am of the opinion that pressure/tilt sensitivity and line consistency are inversely proportional to each other. The more sensitive a pen is, whether pressure or tilt, the more it picks up very minute fluctuations to the pressure and tilt of the hand. Even if one does use a ruler, there will be inconsistencies to the line in terms of direction (caused by tilt) and width (caused by both pressure and tilt). We really cannot blame the user for this because if you pick up a pencil/brush in real life, there is a certain resistance to paper/canvas from these tools that contribute to consistency of a line/stroke. Similarly, it takes a lot of getting used to digital workstations except this time, without that resistance in the picture (which makes it more difficult to learn, to be honest).
I'm not sure if any of the graphic tablet manufacturers implement an algorithm for sensitivity-to-output translation that mimics real-life hand pressure, because it's definitely NOT linear, and artists have different preferences. That algorithm should look more like a curve or a plateau. Or, better yet, make it configurable by the artist if they want to.

My review of Brad's review is this: it is incredible how much work Brad puts into reviewing these products and even goes as far as to spend money on not one but two more tablets whereas he could simply ask the manufacturers for those to test them out as well but no, he just went and paid for them. Obviously he didn't just spend money just so he would have a video for us, he genuinely wanted to know, be informed about those fresh products so that he also would be on the in, have sound knowledge. Still, what I've come to as a conclusion is Brad is a good reviewer and by good I mean a very sincere and dedicated level good.
P.S.: Is it only me but does anyone else also wonder what he does with all those tablets? Yes, I know this is his job and he may very well be using whichever tablet he feels like using at any time for his job as an artist. Yet, I simply can't keep myself from wondering since I can't get even one display tablet. Then, I find myself hopelessly imagining just how great illustrations I would make if only I had one.
Although, maybe not that hopeless I am. I do have my phone with it's twiglike stylus and I also have Autodesk's Sketchbook downloaded. I try. I still would love to have a display tablet. Yet, I'm good.
    Thanks Brad! ( ᐛ )ᕗ
EDIT: Oh and I nearly forgot! I definitely like the new format, if you couldn't tell already. This way it's much more realistic and lets the audience have somewhat of a quasi experience.

Always experiment with your presentation style ;)
I rushed out and bought mine based on budget - looks and the promise of this new pen.
I must say I agree with the build quality and looks and I knew I wanted a multi-height - multi-angle stand which I happily bought separately.
Now I come from a CorelDRAW and XARA on PC background - (WHY have you never reviewed XARA PRO?) I have used it since Xara began developing for Microsoft Windows, as Acorn Computers struggled for market share. Artworks was rewritten from the ground up for the platform and in 1994 it was released as Xara Studio
I would love to know what you think of it.
So back to XP-Pen Artist Pro 16 - Im getting zero ugly lines - no ticks - no bad tails (In XARA PRO) so if that's your go-to - Gets my recommendation - Bargain too.

This is just a theory but... I want to put it out there. If you ever open a drawing tablet like this, the board inside basically has traces that cross over each other, vertical on one side of the board and horizontal on the other. This is apparently how it tracks the position of the pen; the traces seem to basically be a matrix of antenna coils. But onto the theory- I'm wondering if the density of the traces/how close the 'windings' are has any impact on the line being wavy.

I actually bought it and it's good, the only problem I have with it seems I can't figure out how to get the tilt to work in Photoshop it works in clip studio only
Also weird the pen lines come out smooth for me but I might just not notice it

Hey can you test if you lost pen pressure when you holding a pen button to use different brush?
I'm using Clip studio and Deco Pro. When I hold the pen button to quick use brush. the brush have no pen pressure.
Thank you if you can test that out.

@@kien9350 sure! I'll test it out once home (working at the moment), and I'll let you know. I did reassign my buttons so I'll try and assign one to change the brush, and see what happens and get back to you.

Decided to get one of these or the regular version. How much does the display itself weigh? Can't find the weight of both anywhere. Since I want take it with me to locations it would be great to know how light or heavy they are.

The new format came as a surprise at the beginning, but it quickly grew on me. I think a hybrid approach would be ideal: the writing and spontaneity of the vlog format + the well composed A-Roll of the regular scripted video.
On an unrelated note, I would like to suggest adding a "Date of Review" info to your best tablets list. Since it's an ever-expanding list, with new entries mixed with the old, I think knowing when this product was reviewed (or more precisely, when that opinion was formed) would benefit the user experience. Even though people could just click the video and see the upload date, it would be nice for that information to be more apparent, especially for buyers who aren't knee-deep in the variety of drawing tablets that are released every year.

This is so weird. The 16" variations are the only XP-Pen tablets that seem to have major issues. It's really shortsighted to release with known issues. They're trying to position themselves as a cheap but viable alternative. Any table which negates that second goal does major damage to a company still trying to establish their brand.

Based on your expertise, Do you think they might fix the wobble via driver updates, or does it seem like a hardware limitation?
I had high hopes for this one due to the low initial activation pressure :\
