Good luck to you mr Jim . You worked as lecturer. It’s great creative writing and literature. Honestly we in Arabic countries retirement age is 60 for both men and women. In some expectional cases for which they must obtain certain approvals . You in USA minimum age for retirement is 62 . Actually i studied English both language and literature till second year and left college. I really have feeling Iam as real university student. I applied to kindergartens to work as English teacher for toddlers and preschoolers. Unfortunately no jobs vacancies. Iam so sorry you have health problem . May god bless you with happiness and health now and always and the same to your dearest ones .

Well done on a wonderful and rewarding career. I am a recently retired high school high school administrator and teacher. I taught at the local university last semester to try it out as well. My circumstances were different than yours, more trauma related and because of that, it made me reprioritize my life. I have now found value in putting myself first- whether it be a morning walk or hike, a quiet coffee with a book on the deck of the house, a day trip to something interesting or travelling abroad. We have but one life. Live it well and do what is best for you. Be kind, be patient, smile, and do a good deed, no matter how small, every day. Take good care.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing your journey, Jim. And kudos to you for putting such a positive spin on the situation in which you find yourself at this moment. I have followed your channel for some time and will continue to do so. Your preferred literature genre is the classics, I know, but I remember you saying that you "should" try reading more contemporary works. I have a recommendation for you that I think you might enjoy. While I was reading it, I found myself thinking that some of its themes would resonate with you. So here's my suggestion: The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, translated from the French by Alison Anderson. I just finished it and I don't hesitate to say that it's well worth a read.

I finished the Barbery novel and loved it. Perfect recommendation! I'll be discussing it in my next Friday reads video. Thanks a million for suggesting it!

Well that is a big change! I have about four or five more years of face to face teaching in me, then I'll be very happy to retire. The gap between us and them IS getting wider, but so far it is still mostly going well. It will be interesting to see how these changes affect the channel.

Yes, I was prepared to go another 5 to 7 years and tough it out, then this offer came out of the blue. I was shell shocked at first!

It makes sense. I’ve heard that it’s usually a good idea to accept such an offer if one comes up.
Interesting thoughts on student socialization as opposed to in the past.

Yes, there’s been a sea change over the past ten years or so. I’d like to reflect on it more in future videos.

Congratulations, Jim. I know that this was not an easy decision to make, but I think you will find many exciting and creative things to do. I'll look forward to seeing what you do with the channel in the months to come. As you say, there are so many opportunities for exploration! All the best to you always!

Mr Jim: it sounds to me that you made a good decision. I did what you have just done a few years before. While I reached the rank of full professor (and all that kind of stuff!), I was being hassled over my grants by administration, I was overweight, and I never got a weekend off. It was time for me to move on. On the whole, I have found that it was a good decision. I miss my students but I still have work to do. I predict that you will thrive under the new work regime and that you will enjoy life more. And by the way you and your wife have a lovely home. Clearly you have many interests.

Hi James, thanks for the comments. I appreciate the support. So far I'm liking the lifestyle quite a bit. I'm actually busier than I thought I would be. That's a good thing, and I still have more time than I did before for other activities. Glad you are comfortable with your decision! Cheers.

@@greatbooksbigideas I study the economics of technology (but I have a lifelong love for the humanities), and I think that internet technology is on the way to encouraging self-employment for academics. A good example is the Substack channel run by Jared Henderson, who is a philosopher by training. This summer we are reading Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics--it is a three month journey. Jared keeps us all going, even though this is a very hard book to read. You're going to be just fine, you'll find lots of new things to do.

I follow Jared on CZcams and Substack. Good guy! You may be onto something with the internet and self-employed academics.
