The clear coating is called a conformal coating it is used to protect PCB’s and components from moisture/liquid damage. There are chemical conformal coating removers widely available on the market. This stuff was the the bain of my life when I worked repairing aircraft avionics modules.
Acetone to CHCL3 will probably do the work, anyway anything under the chip cannot be removed by a solvent
I had also suffer from this but I had cleaned with petrol those coat were remove easily but I can't understand what type of coat was done by company 🤔🤔🤔
conformal coating can be removed with IPA sometimes, depends though as there are different types. The one we used would come off with IPA no problems, or Microcare heavy duty Flux Remover
You can use toulene or epoxy dulient it will melt the resin off 100% guarantee...
Lemon Juice and (store/shelf/.3%) Hydrogen peroxide or fingernail polish can be used if you don't have Acetone or remover, or if it's late and stores are closed. Still needs a bit of heat to activate though...
Or if you live in Alaska and don't have reliable access to places like Amazon or other online stores.
The lemon juice and h2o2 mix has to be thoroughly cleaned up though because it will cause corrosion and will short the board. So clean with soapy water and a soft tooth brush, then rinse thoroughly, then rinse thoroughly with IPA.
I have a story about one of these. I am also an automotive locksmith. We run a lot of calls. This vehicle requires a lot of work to make the key. If we have to take things apart, remove panels, instrument clusters, open modules we send them down the road. Range Rover is one of these. We had a customer call just for a lockout. We opened it up and her keys weren't inside so she towed it to the dealer. They told her we ruined her KVM by unlocking the car without a key. They wanted $2500 for a KVM and close to $1000 for the key. The lady called me not blaming my company but she didn't know what to do. I told her they were full of BS. I had the car towed out and another locksmith who does all the high end stuff programmed a new fob for $650. This lady was so thankful for me helping her out. I hate these dealers. Always telling customers false information.
Those main dealers love to rip the arse out of anyone. I had a customer that had a totaly flat battery, and the mechanical door lock never worked anyway, so he only used the electronic key fob, the call out service jacked his range rover up & temporarily put a power pack on the starter motor/ solenoid which gave him enough power to quickly undo the door.

Electronic boards are coated to prevent corrosion.
Three types of coatings are;
Acrylic resin
Silicone resin
Urethane resin (Polyurethane)
To dissolve these resins there are solvents to do this with BUT you have to be careful not to also dissolve the PCB board as well.
Acrylic resin can be dissolved with Acetone (very strong) and Xylene
Use a Q-tip with sparing amount of solvent on it and mask area around the electronic component with painter's masking tape.
Silicone resin use Dicone NC-9 on Q-tip using same method.
Urethane resin use Isopropyl 99%
Since there is no way to know which resin was used, start with the Isopropyl to see if that works.
If not then knowing that Acrylic would be the most obvious choice as a coating, I'd then use Xylene.
But make sure you mask off the area.
If no effect then use the Dicone.
It is safe on PCB's
Thanks for your time 😊
Wow good job in dishing out these information thanks
PCB Board 😂 Sorry - bit of an inside joke
The most importand question about it is not how to remove it or "he does not like it". The question is why it is not put back on. it can be just a coat of clearcoat. Car needs this for moisture and humidity changes. I understand the hate , but it it there for a reaseon and decent repair would end with that coat or similar back on there. Also thanks for good explanation.
It's a thin conformal coating and not at all hard to deal with. I use plastic scrapers to remove the bulk of it.
I work for an engineering company that designs and manufactures custom electronics. A lot of our boards receive this conformal coating. Anytime a board needs to be reworked then acetone is used to strip the coating before soldering.
Your information really impactful....
Wow.
It is always a pleasure to work with customers who understand and appreciate the efforts you are putting in order to make the job done. Another amazing video💪

Conformal coating is great for protecting PCBs from moisture, dust and corrosion. Surprised you don't have any of the conformal coating remover! Sometimes acetone or xylene will remove it too. But the actual special remover can be one more thing for you to plug as you repair. You can talk about the best soldering iron tip, best vise, the lights, the best solder wick, best flux, best tweezers, better than factory and best conformal coating remover. I'll give it three weeks before you discover it and add it to your store. 😉
Did he add it? :)
MG Chemicals 8310A - Conformal coating stripper - Gel. Try that stuff out Alex! All the info ive learned from you im excited to pass 1% knowledge to you 💙
Good job with the conformal removal. A few CZcams channels have various methods of conformal rework, one in particular is "Rework and Repair 'Conformal Coating Removal' " on the Paceworldwide channel. If solvents are suggested, it may be difficult to source if someone is currently in California. There's also a section in the IPC 7711/7721 titled "Coating Removal, Identification of Conformal Coating" which has suggested methods as well.
Just my 2 cents.
You are the man for accurate soldering tasks!!
True. Conformal coating is a nightmare to all repair shops. There's actually a solvent that can remove conformal coating, but I forgot what. It's not even commonly used in the industry where they use conformal coating treatment for their customers. The purpose is not only to protect the board from moisture/liquid attack, but also most likely encouraged that the board is non-repairable.
try MICROCARE SUPRCLEAN
I have a few lads that comes in all the time for small auto electronic repair and they're the customers I really like , they never ask for it to be done asap as mostly the part is either stupidly expensive or has a lead time of a few weeks to get a new one. They never complain about the prices and I'm very reasonable because It's little jobs like this is what I love , they hand you the board or part ready to go or I tell them look take it to bits and just give me the board or what needs to be done and I'll do it while you wait. I tried to charge a guy 10 euro once for soldering a new smd led onto a dashboard as he had it ready and 10 leds on a strip, he threw a fifty at me and left me with rest of the leds for next time.
Another FANTASTIC video. Always love seeing pin by pin work
Bro this is art not fixing, love watching your talent. All the best!
Miracle repair my friend. The polyurethane coat is a pain. But you did it brilliently. Good job
Crisp, crunchy and satisfying. As always, nice video
A real craftsman at work, great job!
I deal with this conformal coating daily- Use various products to remove it. I liked the BGA Blade idea you used under the chip but did have me nervous about a pads coming off. Obviously experience plays a part to not damage anything. The blade scraped the coating nicely as well without damaging anything. Definitely an "over come and adapt" situation. Nice
What about yellowish rubber-like material that doesnt come off with Acetone?
@@farmdve leave it longer and it will
For repair work these conformal coatings are a real pain. I understand why they are used, but the silicone type is the easiest to work with. You very rarely even see the softer silicone type used these days. The worst for me is the full epoxy resin type potting. It's not even worth trying usually. You did an excellent job Alex without using a removal aid (chemical removal) it is very difficult to work with for sure.
The customer is very generous, pays well and brings interesting stuff to work on and content for the channel 😂😂😂
That was a real difficult job, very risky but you did it good. Congrats Alex
You should try using the grinding pen first to clean the crap of the pins, then use a low melt solder. That's the only way I found around it. Great video as always brother
I loved the way that stuff scrapped off so satisfying
The conformal coating has a number of advantages including protection from humidity, debris, and oil. Perhaps it might be useful to be able to remove and then replace the conformal coating. There are pen-like solvent applicators that allow spot removal of the coating.
my razor blade works just fine. on motorbike eeprom the it's usually under a half inch of silicone, then all this bs on top of everything else.
@@markwilladsen5683 Not sure I'd want to try the razor blade on some type of polymer coating on a fine-pitched microcontroller IC. But not surprised that it worked for you.
We had that conformal coating on every thing we worked on in the Military way back in the 60s. Had none of the fancy tools and even soldered in electron tubes . The once you dig thru the coatings the traces would come off the PC board if you just looked at it.
Different but still very difficult. Love your techniques.
Educational and entertaining. Very good work. Thanks
Greetings. Thanks always for sharing your knowledge. Major appliances main boards are also coated with that conformal coating.
Alex, have you tried any of the proprietary conformal coating removers like 8309? I think they need to be used outdoors so may not be practical for your area. Keep up the great videos and well done with this one. 😀👍
... and if I’d realised the chip was the wrong way up I’d probably find something to stub my toe on before repeating the job.
"Better Than Factory" and 'A work of Art.'... It's a pleasure watching the master at work...
Yeah, only corrosion protection is gone now. Better then factory :)
@@aspinx ...but it's a work of Art...lol
Always a great learning experience, but you make it fun to watch, too! You may have missed your calling as a comedian😂😂
Your experience make this very difficult job look simple
Great work! Chemicals aside, what about using a square window aluminum layer to isolate all the components from the chip area. That could prevent 'browning' the chip surroundings...
Looks like a SPC560B60L3 chip. Made by STMicroelectronics. It is a 32-bit Power Architecture MCU for Automotive Body and Gateway Applications. Less than $11.56 for small quataties.
I have worked on similar module and I have successfully made this mcu virgin few months ago. Without removing from the board.
One of the tasks at my first job was applying a conformal coat to circuit boards. We went through so many rattle cans of Krylon! Nasty stuff. Breathing protection is essential.
The solder blob techique by NF. Great work.👍
why not dissolve the conformal coating before using hot air?
@@JonnyMac351 yes, I did. He didn't even consider other options besides hot air and low melt solder. Some types of conformal coating can be removed with solvents like isopropyl alcohol or acetone. Since I've bottle of chloroform at hand as well, I'd test it too.
Masterful work, as always.
Wow, I've never seen that move before, where you dragged the solder over the top of the chip. You should name that technique, something like "Alex's Solder Shuffle", great stuff!
It's a very common technique used on surface mount chips.
Great work as always 👍
Its clear varnish to prevent corrosion. Can be cleaned with paint. thinner. Same coatings on medical equipment boards also.
You did not gave up, nice job nice customer.
Land Rover ownership is very expensive indeed! Amazing work! 😀
Welcome to our world Alex, the automotive electronics.
This is one of the easier ones
Nicely done
Eid kareem ya Alex. Great work as usual.
When keeping the old component is not the issue, just cut the MCU pins with a fine and sharp tool to not to damage the pads, then remove the pins leftovers with solder and wick.
What i was thinking'
You sir are an artist with your talent for soldering .
It's working out better than i thought it would
Bro very very nice effort I like it Only one thing I want to add if you donot mind that There are stuff available called conformal coating & conformal coating removal also. I am using those. One more thing I want to add that because it is used in a car in which many things can happen like rain ,vibration etc. so before handing over to the customer please do the coating overnight and then handover to him, Thanks
There are coating cleaning chemicals available in the market. You can get the job done very quickly with these.
There are Resin, polymer desolvers and solvents for this but you have to know what type of resin they are using and car manufacturers use several different kinds. But I would say you would find them on the internet. You might have to try different types to see which ones work and which ones don't.
you know your the best when you try to talk customers OUT of using your services
A perfect job as always.
I like your videos, left one solder ball near the chip😁
you sir, are an artist
Solid work brooo, you da solder master
Feeling the force the ball is :) Good job though!
I used to do that with a normal hakko soldering iron. As you said, flux makes it possible. In a pinch, I have removed old chips with knife and replaced with a weller gas iron.
Today i too struggled badly, unfortunately i don't have blade to life the chip up.
Later i will try again, this video helpful for me.
I hate conformal coating too! I had to
re-spray it on the PC board after repairing it. I would use Acetone to clean the brown burnt conformal coating and re-spray the conformal coating.
Techspray 2510.
2510-P pint can
2510-N Pen about the size of a paint marker.
Might be difficult in Cali!
Pens can be ordered, but the pint cannot be shipped to a home address anywhere in the U.S.
They also have replacement coating to replace it after you get done to end the job up...
"Better than Factory" !
Fantastic work a friend referred this to me
i work manufacturing electronic boards for 15 years, with our coat we use nitro anti-fog thinner or DOLPH’S T-200 to remove the coat. I don't know if is the same coat but workfor us, you have to put the product on board and let it there for 10-15 mins .
I use a small amount of paint stripper apply with a small brush leave until it starts peeling then remove works a treat everytime , just make sure you remove all the stripper 👍
The Land Rovers are designed to go in 1m of water, it is normal that the card is a varnish of tropicalization. Thank you for your patience and your videos.
Not after this repair. It's prone to corrosion now.
Damn i have some solderskills but this is next level ! Like factory appart from the coating discoloration ... 👌
Thats amazing how that solder ball moves around.
Alex hello from lebanon i used to fix that type of boards only thing u must do is a little bit of thinner clean the zone and try to solder
Hats off man.
I have an amazing conformal coating remover made by mg chemicals 8310A, takes a few minutes to soften coating and wipe away, Job done.
The Organic way; hehe...Good work as always
Great job.
❤ Lovely video ❤
When you are using low melt solder, do you change the temperature of your soldering iron or does it just stay balled like that regardless of the iron temp?
Excellent as always :-D
The solvent paint thinner is very good at removing the varnish but it can also erase any printed information on the chip also if thats the case
Use Label remover gel i use that for the same protect what you have on your PCB ! It works really good and don't harm the PCB !
I use MG Chemicals 422C silicone conformal coating on PCBs in marine grade beacon strobes. It protects the strobe beacon PCBs installed on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico from water ingress and condensation. Luckily the boards are available and under $300 and just get replaced when faulty. But MG Chemicals does make a silicone conformal coating remover "8309" if necessary.
Your pin1 corner had the extra large feedthrough at it when you first marked it. Later it looks like you used a different corner as pin 1 when you soldered the new chip in.
Solid. And less flux than Louis Rossmann ;-) mirror mirror on the wall, who does the shiniest micro soldering of them all, ...
Use Wurth engine seal remover - works 100% for coat. It is safe to use if do not let it on aPCB too long. I use it in my job almost every week . I work on vehicle electronic DV.
great job ...
Amasing skill Sir
Excellent 👌
Top man!
Try Xylene. Your hot air is too hot…When using to the hot air use a wooden pointed tool to scrape.
before the desolder you can try acetone or thinner, may be paint remover
I believe acetone will take off the conformal coating (edit: acetone may damage the board). I would apply new conformal coating as this is done to make the board water resistant. Without it corrosion can build up.
الله يبارك فيك اخي
Maybe, you should have run the grinding pen over the pins, to take off as much of the plastic coating as poss, before applying low melt solder.
I use a conformal coating remover and brass wire brush usually to remove conformal coating for automotive electronics.
Mashallah..... Much love from Pakistan
Thank you
Is this a plug and play situation with the chip or do you have to program it before hand?
Nice!👍
Guys, I have a feeling that he knows what conformal coating is
The Trick i've used on thease in the past is to run a scalpel blade along the legs and just shear them off the IC' then low-melt the pins from behind also sometimes Acetone will soften the Conformal coating making it possible to peel chunks like a sunburn..
Its conformal coating.
Protects the board against corrosion and vibration - both big issues in automotive/machinery applications.
Wonder full work bro
I thought you were going to apply that green uv goo at the end to restore that conformal coating
Bro this cot removes with Acetone solution or isopropanol
Interested to know whether the programming at customer end was successful after doing this .. soldering job
