"Será" by Legião Urbana, released in 1985, can be interpreted in various ways. It was written during a turbulent time in Brazilian history as the country transitioned from military dictatorship to democracy. The lyrics, questioning violence and social injustice, are often seen as a hope for change and a better future.
However, a more personal interpretation can see it as a portrayal of a troubled relationship, expressing both doubts and hopes.
The band is known for its profound lyrics, which can be interpreted in many ways, and for its raw, less polished sound typical of the 80s rock scene. Although recorded in a professional studio, the quality might seem "garage-like" due to the recording techniques and technology of the time and possibly a stylistic choice matching the band's image.
Please remember that art is often deliberately ambiguous to encourage personal interpretation. Enjoy exploring the depth of Brazilian rock music

    "Take your hands off me
    I don't belong to you
It's not by dominating me like this
    That you will understand me
    I may be alone
But I know very well where I am
    You may even doubt
I think this is not love
    Will it be just imagination?
    Will nothing happen?
Is all of this in vain?
    Will we manage to win?
    Uoh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
We will get lost among monsters
    Of our own creation
    There will be whole nights
Maybe out of fear of darkness
    We will stay awake
    Imagining some solution
    So that our selfishness
    Does not destroy our heart
    Will it be just imagination?
    Will nothing happen?
Is all of this in vain?
    Will we manage to win?
    Uoh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Why fight? If it's without meaning
    Who will protect us?
    Will we have to answer
For the excess mistakes, you and me?"
The lyrics of "Será" can be seen as a reflection of Brazil's political climate at the time. The opening line "Take your hands off me" can be seen as a direct challenge to the oppressive rule of the military dictatorship. The phrase "I may be alone, But I know very well where I am" might be a statement of individual and collective awareness amidst the political turmoil.
"We will get lost among monsters of our own creation" could be seen as a critique of how the people's apathy or fear can lead to the creation of oppressive systems.
The repeated questioning "Will it be just imagination? Will nothing happen? Is all of this in vain? Will we manage to win?" embodies the uncertainty and hope for a better future in a time of transition.
"Will we have to answer for the excess mistakes, you and me?" This line could be a call for accountability for the country's past errors and a shared responsibility to build a better future.
These are just potential interpretations, and the beauty of music lies in the different meanings it can hold for different listeners.

Well... the Latin component is probably in your preconceptions. LU was just a punk rock band.
