I’m really glad he told my parents they should name me Brandy because my nutzo mother planned on naming me “Sunday”. THANK YOU GRANDPA!!!! Lol.
It’s not about infidelity. People are what they are. He wasn’t going to lie to her and try to stay tied where he just wasn’t capable of staying. He loved her but such is life. Birds have to fly, fish have to swim, some sailors just have to sail, if they are honest with at least their self. Life is full of tragedies sometimes. Is what it is. But her heart will never stop beating for him. She’s a good woman living her life as best as she can, and living in her personal truth. Sad, huh?

The love of a sailor is the sea and Brandi can steal a sailor from it (though in vain). I know, i was a sailor in the Canadian Navy for 20 years, and a girl in a port can be everything to a sailor. I have a suggestion to react to if you haven't yet. Jimmy Buffet and the song Margaritaville. I think you'll enjoy it.

I was 9 or 10 when this came out and it still sounds fresh and cool to this day. Dancing in the Moonlight is another one that feels the same.

As others have pointed out, this song is not about infidelity. Brandy fell in love with one of the sailors who came to the bar where she worked, but he was honest with her and told her that he was in love with the sea and could never be with her full time. I hadn't heard this song for years, but it showed up recently on a TV commercial...so I pulled it out of my collection and have been listening to it a lot lately.

Its just bittersweet. You can’t help who you fall in love with. I always felt good that the sailor acknowledged the love (the chain he gave her) but didn’t lead her on or give her false hopes.

Looking Glass did have a follow-up hit called Jimmy Loves Mary Anne, although it wasn't as big a hit as Brandy and so has been somewhat forgotten over time.

I Grew up in the 60'2, but mostly jived on the 70's sound, ALL of it, Looking Glass had other incredible songs. What your all missing is this is a TRUE LOVE SONG, everytime I here it I dream of a girl I used to know when I did a lot of camping with a group. She was my "Brandy" although she was a year or two older, I always think of her when I hear this song. PLEASE, read lyrics to understand that Brandy's Love for her Sailor was much like the relationship between Miss Kittly and Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke. Brandy was a waitress, who served drinks, when the man that she loved and I believe this Sailor loved her, because he would always bring her gifts, but he could not settle down like Dillon. The Sailors TRUE LOVE was the Sea, but when he arrived in Brandy's Ports it was an unspoken Love affair and Brandy used to love to hear his tales of the Ocean, but alas, the Sea was the Sailors love, he couldn't give it up even though he loved Brandy so Brandy, waited, even though she knew it couldn't be, like Miss Kitty and Matt. She was told she would have made a good wife, but the man she wanted she could have, because the harboor(s) was his town and he would then sail on his true love the Sea. Brandy never gave up hope, that's why she cherished the locket and chain by her Sailor. No cheating, he just could not settle down like anyone in love with their job. But there's always a special someone, somewhere for Both............ One of the greatest lyrics. Oh, the reason why so short, they all were back then, 45's could only hold a certain amount of music, much like when the walkman came out, held enough for the CEO's love of a certain symphony :) Research a little.
