True Story. My dad was a musician this was one of his favorite songs to play. When my mom was pregnant with me she and my dad had to flip a coin because they could not agree on a name. Dad won and so that is how I got the name Brandy LOL.

20 years Navy here. Brandy was girl serving whiskey and wine to the sailors who sit around and talk about their homes. She loved a sailor who came to port frequently he gave her a locket with a braided chain made of finest silver from the north of Spain meaning she meant something special to him. But he never lied, no harbor was his home, but she loved him anyway and walk home alone every night after work. I've sa in bars across the world and talked about my home with the other sailors I was with. This story rings true to life.

The docks and taverns and the sea and the many unrequited loves. Its really a sad love story. Try to hear the studio stereo version.

Brandy is a liquor but not in this song. The sailor was being honest with her telling her that he had to put his job first before he settles down! Poor Brandy! Great song and reaction!
He may have actually been putting HER first. Maybe; it was not his job only; he also, may not have been into settling down. When he said "what a fine wife you could be"; we can't assume, he was talking about himself specifically.
